      I own a K70 Mk2 and the non-standard bottom row is a real pain because I'd love to kit it out with some new keycaps. Alas, it is not to be. I may get the solering iron out and swap the MX Browns it came with for Kailh BOX Whites. I have those in my daily use keyboard (a 60%er) and I enjoy typing on that sooo much more than the Corsair but I do miss some of the features of the K70, particularly the media functions.
      Apart from anything else, I feel like it would be a fun project. I get that desoldering the existing Cherrys might scare some people off the idea but I have a vacuum desoldering station, which makes the task infinitely more bearable and rapid.
      A side thought I had was..could Kailh hotswap sockets fit on the Corsair's PCB?

    My buddy has had a modded Wooting2 (full size wooting) for nearly a year now where all he did was lightly lube ONLY the springs (since they're MX-esque switches) and changed out the keycaps to be double-shot ABS in comparison to the terribad keycaps it comes with stock.
    It makes a WORLD of difference in both feel and sound (spring no longer pings/rattles around, making it more enjoyable) and it doesn't affect performance in the slightest.
    I know Thomas isn't the biggest fan of modding switches in order to make them "better" but for the cost of the boards listed in this video, the mods for the Wooting don't even make it more expensive than the majority of the optical boards shown in this video. Anyone who has a Wooting, I highly suggest just lubing the springs and changing out the keycaps to something of better quality.

    Scored a Huntsman TKL for 85$ on BF sale, pretty damn good board when reasonably priced. If you have 1h+ to spend on greasing all the stabs, the result is fantastic. Butter smooth now and slightly harder to initially get the key to move down, which genuinely results in no more typos. Deeper sounding too and feels like a different board, highly recommended. I used a small brush to lube the sliding rails on the upper side of the stab mechanism and of course the main 2u+ exposed stab wires and plastic clips. Had some cheap teflon+ptfe grease of medium, creamy consistency.

    • @arctic9082
      @arctic9082 2 роки тому

      Even the huntsman mini is pretty good too when it's on sale, similar story with me. I got mine when it was on sale at my local best buy for $90 (they unfortunately didn't have the TE), and lubing the stabilizer wires on all the switches + the dampening on each one eliminated a lot of the rattle. Gotta say, razer's really stepping up their quality, just a shame the regular asking price when their boards are not on sale is still a bit too high to really be considered good value. That's one area I still think they need to work on.

    Having been able to recently demo your top three examples, I would put the K100 slightly ahead of the Huntsman TE in terms of smoothness with the Apex Pro above them both. That being said, I'm not a fan of either Corsair's or SteelSeries' software, the latter of which was outright broken in that it would freeze my computer whenever I tried to change a color profile. While you may rightfully have issues with Razer Synapse, I've never had any major issues with it.

I notice when I use custom keyboards inputting combos would make it harder compared to my laptop's keyboard (Tokaku made a good video behind the reasoning of this you should check it out). Though I say this for the average joe who plays fps, rpgs, mobas I believe it won't make a big hindrance since there are other things to worry about. I guess thank you for uploading this, for whatever reason the notification of this video reminded me that I should go thrifting in case I can find old keyboards for pennies like you sometimes do, and someone had a random mechanical keyboard for sale for the equivalent of about 4 dollars. Didn't even bother looking at it closely and just brought it home and turns out it has genuine cherry MX blacks.
    I prefer my clicky switches or buckling springs but I was a bit tired of gaming on my Model M even though I don't play competitively and it could do it pretty well, I've just had some rollover issues with my alps and buckling spring boards but couldn't justify an expensive modern "gaming" keyboard just because of that
    No idea why anyone would dump a keyboard at such a price but considering they were selling children's clothes and other random things I'm guessing there's either a very unhappy husband out there or they just wanted to throw it out, either way I'm pretty happy

    Surely they can add actuation adjustment in firmware? Isn't it just changing the amount of light hitting the sensor?

    • @thechemtrailkid
      @thechemtrailkid 3 роки тому +1

      I would hope so but I'm not sure. I guess it would depend on if you could 1) make the light sensor less sensitive or 2) raise the threshold for output for the component that senses voltage from the light sensor. I don't see why either of these would have to be the case but maybe it's possible?

    So the reason why I use cherry mx linear switches is.... I can't find something else... I want a German Iso layout, Windows-Keys and key caps that don't get shiny after 3 months. So I can't find many options and have ended up with some Cherry G80s- and I am still thinking about a Unicomp model M- but the 2-key rollover would possibly ruin it completely...

    You should really try JWK/Durock MX style switches. The MX fanboys on r/mechanicalkeyboard and r/switchmodders are convinced they are SMOOTHER than these contactless switches, and that these contactless switches are "inconsistent across the board". A video like that would def be fun). Also about the Corsair board. Since the switches are clip in, maybe you can swap the spring for 62 gram or something that suits your weight and use RO-59 dry lube so it doesn't interfere with the sensing.

    You can actually lower the actuation distance of these switches by cutting away the bottom of the slider, that's what i did on my gateron opt yellow board (35g 1mm), i was extremely tired of hitting the caps lock accidentally, so i opened the switch and cut a little portion of it so the actuation part is now at around 2mm (give or take), its a little scratchy, since i didnt clean properly the debris of the switch after i cut it, but i think it was worth it, for the caps lock anyway

I understand that sophisticated old battleships are very nice, but some of us have neither the desk space nor the inclination to buy into that market. Also, would these (or similar contacless switches) work in a regular MX style hot swappable keyboard? I am thinking about tríing out something like this, but I need the ortholinear layout which limits my options (also I have 2 perfectly good hot swappable keyboards I don't need another one).
