IH actually had a 4WD farm model before the 4100. It was the 4300, a huge tractor built by IH's Hough Payline division. Only 44 of these huge tractors were built from 1961-65. These tractors used the enormous DT-817 inline turbo six engine rated at 300 BHP. The 4300 was essentially a piece of construction machinery gone farming!
Design was heavily influenced by the Payline division of IH. The 4100 was something IH got right from the beginning and helped IH become a major player in this part of the market. These very large tractors, within a decade put steel track crawler tractors, out of agricultural market. A cabin was an option most people ordered.
Released at the same time as the 1206 it offered the same horsepower rating. The cost differential between the two tractors had the 4100 costing about 40% more than a similar 1206. This was a good tractor and lead the way in four wheel drive design for its model life. What I never understood is why IH introduced it with a 100hp engine instead of stepping up to say a 150 hp engine to really set it away from the big tractor field. One of these was in use as recently as a decade ago in my part of the woods.
There was a "Front Wheel Assist" option offered on the 1206 late in its production. I don't know its price compared to a base model 4100. The 1206 was a row crop tractor whereas the 4100 was very much a "broadacre tractor".
The IH 2+2 had quite a different heritage to the 4100. The 4100 went through 3 updates, the 4156, 4166 & 4186 with the original 2 +2 being built alongside the final 4186 AWDs. The 2+2 tractors were amazingly nimble for their size and were designed for row crop farming whereas the rather bulky 4100 etc. were designed mainly for broadacre wheat farming etc.
at 100 hp it had what 300 torque. lol idk why they always boost hp and not torque for tractors. that meant as much if not more. the 2016 cat 330e loader has 600hp with over 1k torque lol that seat looks crappy. like a old sheep foot compactor lol
Amazing how 100 hp used to be a big tractor now we have skid loaders with that much power

I just saw my first one, restored in industrial yellow, at my hometown’s sesquicentennial.
