  • In this episode of The Little Things, we will take a look at one of the most prevalent toy and media crazes of the 1980s: The Little (Fairy, Gnome or Elf-Like) Folk from a Tiny, Hidden Magic World. In this first part of a series of videos about the toy lines involved in this fad, we will look specifically at the shows, films and toys that were most directly inspired by that 1980s super-craze, The Smurfs. This includes The Snorks, The Astro Sniks, the Monchhichis, and the Gummi Bears. It turns out there were quite a bit of these toy and product lines produced at this time, so this topic will be broken into several videos. Please stay tuned for more!

*I had Astro Sniks in 1978.* Those were sold in Hallmark Shops alongside Smurfs.

They were really rare over here in the US. I remember them in those Hallmark stores, but I don't think anyone else carried the line. Neat little sci fi smurf toy line.

Gummi Bears is a highly Underrated adventure series.

I loved Gummi Bears and really thought they were one of the best of these types of cartoons. They really were fun to watch.

Part 3 has been in the works for a long time, but hopefully will be out soon. Should cover stuff like Fraggles, Charmkins and Cabbage Patch. We got sidetracked. There were a lot of these types of things back then! I hope these bring back some good memories!

I've meant to look at your back-catalogue of videos; I'm glad this was re-upped; inadvertent reminder.
Tolkien, yeah, but the narration with the opening slides in this reminds me SO much of the opening to Bakshi's film WIZARDS and is therefore toweringly epic -- well done! I'm absolutely tickled that you mention Holly Hobbie -- I have a strong nostalgia with virtually *everything* I've seen in your vids, though of course in some different ways sometimes. (Too many weird synchronicites to even mention here too -- though I did muse upon getting some 2" smurfs to display locked in eternal combat with the new 7" D&D figures, heehee.)
Never cared for the Snorks much, simply because the logo looks like macaroni. (shrug)
I'm waking up and groggy-headed and apparently suffering the cliche of "Sorry I wrote you a long letter; didn't have time to write a short one" and that statement didn't help. So I'll just leave this as-is except for adding: I really appreciate these, and the time and the time and effort you put in. My sincerest thanks! 🙏😃

Wizards! That reminds me of summers a long time ago and visits with my cousins to a "mom and pop" type video store to get movies to while away the hours. Great film. I actually liked the Smurfs as a little kid, but so did everyone else, though they often won't admit it. I particularly liked the pirate Smurf fig when I was little.
I think we were just overwhelmed by how many of these kinds of toys and shows were out in the 1980s. In fact, it was a conversation about that topic (which lead to a conversation on pop culture trends) that lead us to start the channel in the first place. There is yet another episode of that kind of stuff coming, but it was put on hold a while back for various reasons. Thanks again for your input!

@@thelittlethings3309 I'm looking forward to that. And you are right, liking Smurfs is fine. Now and then I and friends of the same generation will have a very smurfy conversation. You know, about all the smurfy things smurf has to offer.

That's just a little more Smurf than the law will allow. We will now be "inviting" you to attend a mandatory de-smurfing facility. Smurf you for your cooperation.
