    Wow! Such a time capsule, within this video!! I was born in '79, so I was an '80s kid, and can actually remember almost all of these toys from when I was a kid. Brings back so many great memories, and fun times too!! Those were the days, and I'd give anything to go back to better, and happier, times.

      How could they have been ninja turtles ripoffs if they were made by PlayMates, the company that made the original Turtles toys? Especially since, correct me if I am wrong, the Barnyard Commandos were released before the Turtles toys. Edit: The first wave of turtles toys came out less than a year before barnyard commandos. I still don't see how they are ripoffs, aside from the similarity of radioactive mutation, which is irrelevant when it comes to the design, appearance and style of the toys.

    the 80's was the prime decade for my kids. My son was big into GI Joe and He Man. He was also big on anything cars, Matchbox or Hot Wheels. My mother tried to buy a Cabbage Patch doll for my daughter but could not find one anywhere so we went looking at the toy stores in Germany where we were living at the time. We found one, a boy doll named Hans Gunter. This time I remember many of these toys unlike the 70's. Great time going down memory land, thanks Rhett!

    Other odd-ball 80's toy lines that I remember (like most on this list of strange toys): Get Along Gang, Rock Lords (spin-off of Go-Bots), Shirt Tales, Wuzzles, Rose Petal Place, Herself the Elf, and Glowfriends. A lot the early 80's cartoons and toys were based off of greeting card characters (Shirt Tales, Rainbow Brite, Strawberry Shortcake, and Herself the Elf are the ones I remember well).

    • @adreabrooks11
      @adreabrooks11 6 місяців тому

      I had forgotten about Wuzzles! Thinking of them simultaneously made me think of Popples (which I'm pretty sure came from the same animation studio) and M.A.S.K. (which featured mashup vehicles instead of mashup mascots).

    I think one of the coolest toys from the 80s was Tomy’s “Space Pets”.
    They were mechanical creatures that ran off of air power. One wound hop, one rolled with scissor links going back and forth. They were very creative and definitely something that inspired kids to want to be engineers when they grew up. Sort of like the little robotics kits you get in a craft store.

    Funny…Manglor left quite an impression on me. Even though it was ruined once you ripped it up, I still have fond memories of it because it was so different…and I didn’t try and pull it apart right away.
    I had that castle thing, it was full of some kind of applesauce-like slime. You would pump the tower up, and it would lift the cage with Manglor in it, up out of the slime…and in my case, while pumping, you would knock it over and spill that crap all over your bedroom floor and ruin the carpet, getting in a lot of trouble, lol!
    I remember that fateful day…I had Thriller playing on my Raggedy Ann and Andy record player…it was about my third copy of the album because I wore it out playing it so much…and wore out for the fact that I was playing it on a Raggedy Ann and Andy record player lmao!

    I had a strange doll back in the 1980's that if you left it in sunlight, its skin got darker. Was called 'Suntan Tuesday' if I remember right. Blonde, barbie style doll that never got that dark, but did noticeably change. And changed back to paler if you kept it in the dark overnight iirc. Wasn't a patch on my good old Sindy dolls though lol

    • @adreabrooks11
      @adreabrooks11 6 місяців тому

      Yep; the doll was called Tuesday Taylor - and that specific one was Suntan Tuesday Taylor - sort of like how they had Astronaut Barbie, Doctor Barbie and so on. IIRC, she was made in the late 70s, but there were definitely still a bunch around in the 80s.
      She (the doll) also inspired a movie, based on a mother whose child died because the photosensitive chemical in a tanning doll was toxic, and who fought to lay charges against the megalithic corporation responsible. I can't remember the name of the movie (might have been one of those made-for-TV releases), or if the plot had any basis in fact, but it certainly made me second guess playing with one as a child.

    I was born in 1979. I only remember the E.T. finger and the Barnyard ones. I saw E.T. in the theatre when I was still 2 years old. I don’t think I saw Poltergeist all the way through until I was about 12. I didn’t like the feeling of some of my toys staring at me at night. I had one of those Barbie hairstyling heads and I would usually turn it around. My oldest brother is 9 years older than me and he had this 2 or 3 foot tall, pretty realistic-looking Godzilla toy that scared me, even when it was stuffed in the closet. It had really sharp claws.
    Just who wrote those instructions for the E.T. finger? If too long, cut off? To ensure more enjoyment? I wonder if that was one of those toys that they used to release before the movies came out?

    I love that I was born in July of 1989 because even tho I grew up throughout the entire 90s. I felt like I got to experience the last bits of the 80s, Intermixed into the 90s. It was such a great combo of hand drawn animation, obscure well made creative toy's. It was just such a great time to grow up during. I loved how artists/brands/TV was not afraid of leaning into creating wacky things. Even if a show was eerie they found ways to blend in worth while writing, or life teaching lessons in there alongside the scary macabre oddities type stuff. I really can't stress enough just how much life lessons I learned from TV, kids cartoons. (They were called kids cartoons but once I grew up I realized that they really made certain things so they can be enjoyable for people of all ages. It really was such a golden era of creativity/personality/vibe/aesthetics)
