Hi man! Loved the video, but I have a question, none of the poems I've read/heard rhyme, why is that? Is it because I'm reading a certain type of poetry, if so, would you consider ever making a video on the different types of poetry? Thank you very much, Sean
Big Sean! thanks for viewing! So as you know, there's tons of different styles of poetry, like how there's tons of different styles of music. Some music has rapping, some has singing, some have both. Same with poetry; some rhyme, some don't, some have both. But if you're talking about competitive performance poetry (AKA slam poetry), there actually IS a reason why we no longer see rhyme-centric poets making it to finals! I might make this a video one day, and there's multiple reasons why but the jist of it is that slam poets realized setting up a rhyme would sometimes consume unnecessary time just to get to the punchline, while if you weren't limited to rhyme form, you can cut directly to your point. In a competition where every second counts, more and more poets started to abandon rhyme and even poetic structure and device, which is why most modern slammers have a very prose centric style. Many slam poets still incorporate some rhyme and most slam poets utilize poetic devices, but don't be surprised if you come across someone who's essentially spitting an essay, rhythmically. It's wack, but that's what the competition-culture produced. Once I have a clear time to make a vid, I'll get to the issues, and thank you so much for watching! -Kuya
@@PenCliqueMedia damn..I didnt realize that this was posted over 5 years ago.
So what I noticed from your reply is that slamp poetry essentially evolved from form over function to function over form.
I see the same thing with modern shredding (guitar). Back when rock and metal were in its infacy it was about the overall message or emotion of the song. Abstract ideas essentially. Now I've come to notice that those in the spotlight have taken virtuosity to an extreme to the point where, yes, the songs are incredibly technical but unfortunately...forgettable. Im not saying all poetry has resorted to the same state but there's something to be said about competition culture in the western world and its effects on the arts.
Not every song needs to be a technical demonstration of music theory. Im not sure if there's a parallel there but I definitely see similarities.
I love slam poetry, however my stagefright would make me start crying :’)
all good! slam is the competition aspect, but there's a much easier avenue of spoken word, the open mic. You can probably find a small open mic to try it out; most are very "express over impress" and encourage new comers! The more you practice ahead of time, the more you can let your "autopilot" carry you to the finish line, leaving much less stress come stage time. Best of luck.
Pen Clique Thank you!! Luckily I don’t have to do any soon :D
Thanks for the video....but i have a small doubt, do we have to speak the poetry out extempore?
In all honesty: Depends on which country you're slamming in. American slam is heavily centered around performance. Performance to text ratio is like 65:35. In other countries like England, it's about 50-50. Then there's places like Paris or Amsterdam, specific cities, where the ratio is biased towards text over performance, like 40:60. I've seen it all first hand myself, so if you're in a country I didn't mention, then take that info as you will...
Ok thank u so much :) luv the video
Thank you!!! Now its a bit clearier what it is. :)
love from bangladesh
so it is like rap for people who cannot rap?
bravo ;)
+mustapha slameur thank you kindly!
+The Prime Poetry League we do slam & poetry in morocco north africa too :)
+mustapha slameur dope! What are the rules like over there? I noticed in Europe they have longer time limits than the states
+The Prime Poetry League yes we have the same rules , are u on facebook ?
Cool cool. What do judges typically value more? Performance or text? I remember in Amsterdam being surprised that it was 80% text and 20% performance based. In the states, it's either 50-50 or 60-40 Performance to text. Yeah we're on FB: facebook.com/primepoetrylg
quick question: Are you Filipino?
Dave Bernasibo ya and me too
Saya juga punya puisi, tapi hanya sederhana sekali

Bro , seriously How could you make this video without giving any example . If you are making an introduction video you should give example how it sounds like . I came to know what is slam poetry from another video and you successfully wasted 4 mins . I still have no idea what is slam poetry.
It seems you might be looking for a format or style reference of some kind. Like how "blackout poetry" or "concrete poetry" indicate a certain style." But honestly, "slam poetry" doesn't exist; poems FOR slams exist, and it's what people often mistake calling what spoken word poets do. But technically you can bring any style of poetry to a slam competition as long as you adhere by the rules outlined in this video.
