    Hi just to let you know the Orbea D50 has £500 off at the mo at Pure Electric at £1.999 bargain www.pureelectric.com/products/orbea-gain-d50-electric-road-bike?Klaviyo&July%20Sale%20-%20e-bike%20%28Xj57vK%29&_kx=zu1nBttqn5pHkub9gsXlZPqVQJ-6vD_lhbQFPSe_lQ51EdpETEnKPZlIjz4xVWQx.LDR5zm

    Thanks for your honest review! I’ve seen all your comments on other videos, as well. I’ve just done a 21 mile loop around Kirkby Stephen, Warcop, Bleatarn and Great Asby. 18 months ago I did the climb from Great Asby to Soulby ( tough!!) on my regular road bike . I’ve been avoiding certain routes because of the climbs. Today , on my Orbea Gain it wasn’t easy but very manageable. I know, now, that my choice of rides in the Eden Valley and the Lakes is going to be increased. Thank you so much 👍

    Great video. I have carbon and aluminium bikes both with 105s. I also bought a orbea d50 off the back off getting a tad older and the impact of not doing too much excessive in the first year of lock down. To be honest I can’t really tell the difference between the Claris and 105s Other than the 105s seem a bit smoother when changing gears. But as I am not racing it makes no difference. All the best and really impressed on what you have achieved in under a year.

    Nice review! Have you thought about buying slightly older spec 105 derailleurs, cassette, chain and shifters from eBay? People are always upgrading, sometimes within weeks of buying a bike and 5700 10speed is cheap, 5800 11sp not bad…even if you buy it new. The range of gears will likely be the same as your Claris, but it’s easier to find the right gear without big gaps affecting your cadence…
    Your cable discs shouldn’t feel spongy as they are all mechanical. Might need a look over…Hydraulic I’m finding is a bit of faff; lots of stuff online making a case for cable over hydraulic discs unless you have issues with grip…

      Thanks Yako, yes been looking on eBay keeping my eye out, Claris is fine just wanted to get the next level as now I’m going on longer rides. Yes heard a lot of bad things about Hydraulic so will have a think but thank you and I love your channel 😬👍

    I find all this group set snobbery incomprehensible. All Shimano group sets will do a perfectly good job, even the bottom end models work well. You could easily do 100 mile rides on Sora or Claris, particularly with pedal assist to help with the limitations of the gearing, but even Claris will give you 24 gears with a triple up front for the worst hills. In fact you could do a 100 mile ride using the Tourney groupset if that's what you had. What do you think we did in the old days when we were riding five/six/seven speeds? When I joined my first club nobody used derailleurs, it was all fixed wheel riding and rides of 100 miles plus over all terrains were the norm. I would have thought using a modern e-bike would render the use of the more expensive group sets uneccesary.

    • @tonystone3397
      @tonystone3397 Рік тому

      I agree, but I would draw the line at Tourney, its brutal, I would pay a bit more and get the excellent Sora groupo.

    Spot-on review / comments. Being 66 with a slightly dodgy knee from a football injury back in the day, I decided to buy a Gain. Outstanding bike. I have a D20 and that's the version you want if doing any serious climbing. My routes involve long 6% average climbs with some 8-10% stretches and a few 10%+ ramps. The Ultegra groupset does the job well. Hydraulic disc brakes also handy for on the way down.....

    Nice video, I think you have hit the nail on the head ref categories. I really dont know why they sell with an 8 speed group set or 9 for that matter. I guess its kind of for the commuter rider or something. I always said you would be amazed what an 11 speed will do especially if you have a bigger front ring option. Have you asked you local bike shop how much it would cost for the 105 conversion? That would be cheaper than buying a new bike. I would suggest that going to a carbon frame for us heavy riders would potentially be a mistake for you. I have had a full carbon in the past when I was lighter (16 stone) and even then found it very skittish on the road and loss confidence in it a sold it on. You have made fantastic progress over the last 9 months and I have tried to give you my best advise with every video you published so I would stick to an Ali frame and Carbon front fork as the price difference is not a massive saving and is more of a must have type of thing. You could always ask on other forums about it or test ride some carbon bikes. Have you thought of a Titanium frame? Dont be offended just giving you some ideas and 'gear lust' is an actual thing. Save your money and upgrade to a 105 set with a 34 speed cassette at the back. Keep up the good work matey and your subs will steadily go up.

    • @LakeDistrictcyclist
      @LakeDistrictcyclist  2 роки тому

      Thank you for that, you have been great with your advice and yes I will look into seeing how much the 105 will cost to fit as never thought of doing that. Yes I was worried about the carbon full frame due to my weight, but it prob take me 3 years to save up so I’m hoping to be lighter 😬. But I will look into upgrading to the 105 as that sounds a very good idea.

      105 on the D30 is fantastic - 1:1 ratio of gearing plus the assist will get these bikes up most slopes with enough battery. It still is a heavy bike though and without the assist it’s like riding a heavy ladder bike which for me is where it’s limitation is on flats or 2% slopes. Slower unless you can put in more power. The 25 km/h limit is silly for bikes like this.

    Great video with useful information.👍 I have the Shimano 105 drive train on my Ribble CGR e bike and I've found them quite excellent with smooth shifting. The cassette is 11 - speed (11-32} with a 50 -34 crank set, so can get up pretty much anything. Also, I'm well pleased with the hydraulic disc brakes - feel safe on those steep downhills! So, yes, go for the 105 system ,

    Great video as always @Lake District cyclist I agree, a few more gears would be really useful, as I have found in certain situations gears slipping, especially on not so steep hills, maybe I'm not getting the gear to engage properly. I would say I'm definitely in category 1, thanks

    First I would not bother with carbon frame unless you compete in events. Plenty of you tube videos about don’t discount aluminium frames but with carbon forks and the weight saving from all carbon is not all that great. I can vouch that 105 is a great group set and today’s 105 is as good as the previous Version of Ultegra. I have a Giant Defy 1 from 2014 with 105 and a Giant Road e from 2021 again 105. I always thought the 2014 - 105 was good but the later one is much better. I looked at the Orbea Gain and the Ribble ale but delivery times were around 9 months and I was able to buy the Road e from stock. The motor gives 80 NM torque which is more than I need (nearly 66 Yrs old) with 5 levels of assist. The bike does weigh 19kg so I do need the lowest level from around 2 to 3 % gradient and level 2 from 6% plus. Last week I did a 60 mile ride with 1760 mts climbing with 50 % battery left. I have to admit I did try it at full assist on a 3.5 km climb and I was laughing instead of the usual grimace when I reached the top. Keep the videos coming and thanks for sharing your adventures.

  • @josefraiz8438

    If you are in category 3 apart of the group set 105 will be enough, I will be looking for a bigger battery. I did with my gain 7000 miles in a year, now the range of my bike if I do a lot of climbing it is about 25 miles.

    Fair play to you great post as normal, but i have to disagree with you. The claris groupo works perfect if set up right, had mine for over a year never had a gear slip. I would check the chain for kinks, and the rear derailleur make sure its stright, and all running free. I agree its the cheapests and heaviest but it will work. I have Ultegra on my race bike and it is much faster, smoother and lighter, but they both work well, Claris just a bit slower and not as smooth. Take you time, set it up right, you will get so much more from the machine. God bless you, keep you the great posts.

      Great bike Christian you will love it. Im a fairly regular 100 mile rider and this bike makes it an absolute pleasure, pretty much only use the lowest level of assist as most half decent riders would find to be the case but its great. Mines the M20 so carbon frame and its lovely and comfortable. With regards to the size you may want I agree with the Lake District cyclist that you may well find the medium is a good fit. I am just around 6ft 2 and was fitted to an XL as I have relatively long arms for my height. My other not assist bike (a Bianchi Aria) is an L and any other road bike Ive ever ridden was a large and the gain in XL fits perfectly so think they may be slightly smaller than most. Happy riding!!

    on a flat plane, how fast are you able to achieve with this bike? 20+ mph? can it get to 25 mph sustainably?

    • @LakeDistrictcyclist
      @LakeDistrictcyclist  2 роки тому +1

      On the bike it gives you assist until 15.5mph then it’s your own power but I can easily get to 25mph on flat usually stay around 20mph on flat without to much effort

    Personally I’m doing 100 miles on a road bike sora £500 bike.
    Bike weight 12kg. The extra spending on bikes makes it just a bit easier… and more luxurious if you can afford to pay. I’m also looking for 105 carbon flat bar gravel

    shimano groupsets are garbage in general, shifters force the cable to make 90 degree turns in the shifter, destroys cables and on rare occasions destroys the shifter itself.
    Happens to all of their modern road bike shifters.
    On top of numerous other issues.
    Avoid.
