That backpacking trip which took place 12 years ago was the worst, most uncomfortable trip that he has ever had.......

I’m a 66 yr old woman and bike mostly. My UA-cam channel is Frontier Senior. I took a few days away from home in East Tennessee to ride solo from Williamsburg VA to Richmond VA on the Virginia Capital Trail. I left from Williamsburg at dark in the a.m. It was pretty creepy in the dark even though I had lights on my bike. I rode about 63 miles each day. I got some great pics and met some wonderful people. I’m glad my husband and family support my love of biking. Hubby and I have been married 47 years and have 2 awesome daughters. One enjoys camping. She’s a teacher in Knoxville and she and I camp together. We want to buy a hot tent. We also have 4 horses but rarely ride anymore. They’re pretty much our big spoiled babies. 😂 Love your channel and have been watching for a few years. Keep up the awesome content. God bless you and your family. ❤

Hey, Luke! Your friend's heavy backpack story is really funny! Reminds me of the story one of my Twin boys told me after he and 4 of his friends got back from a 3-day backpacking trip on the Foothills of North Carolina. One of his male friends had a 50 lb plus backpack full of food! He is a little on the plump side too and he loaded his backpack with a bunch of can goods and other heavy food items. My son said they had to stop hicking every 15 to 20 minutes to wait on him because he fell so far behind. They did take some of his gear after a while to help him out. My son said when they set up their first camp and they got to watch him start pulling the gear to set up his tent, he had enough food to feed everyone for a couple of days!

Yeah we all have those trips. Savage Gulf in Tennessee. Doing the Alum Gap loop and this was before cell phones but I had a transistor radio. A hurricane came out of the Gulf of Mexico and didn't track the way they forecast and it hit at around 1 in the morning. Flash flood warnings for the area I was in. I tried to wait it out but gave up when my Eureka Wind River floor was like a water bed. Bless her heart she never leaked. Hiked or ran in massive thunderstorms back to the truck. Adventure!! I will never forget it.

Being a native of the SF Bay Area, I’m more than familiar with droughts. So when I watch your videos of rain storms (lightning and thunder) I’m in awe, wishing we could have some rain! We’ll, you know the saying, “be careful what you wish for” …. I’m done with the rain, hail, snow, WIND, floods, etc. But I’m still enjoying your content, it’s all about the adventure 😅

I lived in the Bay Area for 27 years. When I first moved back to the East Coast I would sit in my garage with the door open and watch the thunder and lightning storms…oh and the downpours. I loved it. I missed storms so much. It was satiating.
In those 27 years in the Bay Area I can count on one hand the amount of thunder and lightning storms. The Bay Area is beautiful. I love the summer fog in SF but missed certain weather patterns.

My most miserable moment on a trail was either during my AT Thru hike attempt when my lung collapsed in the Smokies, or when I had gear failure and had to road hike an additional 10 miles back to my car with no phone service. Both were SUPER FUN.

My trip from hell was in the air. I had to fly from my home state of MN to ME, because I was meeting a young lady I "met" online. The irony was this was to be my 1st airline flight ever. I'd had many hours in small piston powered planes, even as student pilot. But I got so incredibly nervous because of flying, meeting someone out of the blue, and being away from familiarity, that I got sick. I couldn't eat anything, and the trip was the most miserable time I've ever had. So, after meeting and staying there for a few days, it was time to go home. On THAT flight, I was offered the most soothing, satisfying, comforting, relaxing, and gentle food I have ever had in my 56 year existence... a simple turkey and melted cheese sandwich. I can still taste it. I still remember the seat I was in on the Delta 737. It was the best food I have ever had. That was 22 years ago. Luke, thanks for this!!

Luke, boy can I relate with your story of being an angry kid and having a temper! That was me. I would explode at the drop of a dime. The problem was I didnt know how to fight and being a skinny kid, I usually lost the fights I got it. That all changed the second I started Jujitsu. As soon as I progressed far enough into martial arts, I too learned to control my anger and to was able to successfully defend myself. Now 30 years later I am teaching others how to control their anger and the benefits of Jujitsu. It also came in handy on the streets when I was a cop. Too anyone out there who has kids or is in a position where they are afraid of confrontation or have anger issues, please, please get into boxing or one of the martial arts. I prefer Jujitsu but there are plenty of other martial arts to choose from. Its the best investment you could make for yourself. ✌🙏🇺🇸

On my trip from hell, we were traveling the Oregon coast and stopping and spending a night or two at each campground. At the last one, we got the very last site and it was around 2am. We set up the tent and went to bed. We woke up a couple hours later and we were sleeping in about 6 inches of water and everything was soaked. It was awful.

Also, it comes to mind as you review military and non-military tents, I can remember when I was in the infantry in the late 60's we each carried what they called a 'shelter half', one 2 pc tent stake, 4 stakes and a pc of cord all olive drab in color. In order to pitch a tent you needed a buddy (he had the other half of your tent). It was a pup tent with no doors or rip stop or mesh or anything other than a piece of canvas that measured approximately 7 foot by 4 foot. Each man had on pole (you needed 2 to pitch) and together you had enough stakes and cord to pull it tight and get inside for the night. This was part of each man's TA50 (field gear) which included such items as mess kit, canteen, canteen pouch, helmet liner, sleeping bag, etc. This was standard issue and each man was responsible for his gear. Field maneuvers consisted of need for comradery and coordination (very military). They didn't care awful much who you chose for your tent buddy either. Sometimes we'd eat C rations (even leftover K rations from WW2) or if they were in a generous mood the mess hall would send out hot food. They'd fill 2 trash cans with hot water (one had soap in it) and we'd swish our mess kits around in one then the other to rinse and air dry. It was important to avoid putting our knife, fork and spoon in the mess kit because it rattled during troop movements. So we wrapped those individually using socks, hankies, etc. Light weight was not available and our packs were very heavy. Stamina was necessary to go day to day without dropping out. We ate well, slept terrible and just got through it. At that time most were right around 20 years old give or take a couple of years so were in tip-top condition at the peak of life. Our military was well supplied and ready for whatever assignment we received. All straggler types had been ferreted out long ago in training. The Army found ways to keep us supplied so we could do our job but it was a rough life. I muse sometimes when you speak of tent weight, features, leakage, etc. Such luxuries were not even thought of back when I served. Keeping the main portion of a storm off your head was the best you could hope for as the shelter half tents were more like wind tunnels. I'm sure conditions have improved over the years both for military and civilians. I enjoy your 'strength and honor' schtick at the end of videos. And I also muse about that as well as most today have no idea about strength and honor. And if the SHTF there would be mass casualties immediately. Making provisions for the 'what-if' gets a lot of lip-service but not much else.

Our trip from hell.....I talked my young family into an overnight hike up Mt. Leconte. It was our first time ever hiking and we were not prepared as we should have been. The trail was very steep, and half way up the temperature dropped and it started raining. When we got to the shelter I said we'll get some hot food in these kids ( 8 and 11 years old) and get wrapped up in our sleeping bags to get warm. We discovered that our oldest son, who was in charge of carrying our water supply, had poured out all our water. "Why?" I said......He replied, "Because it was heavy." Well, we couldn't spend the night with cold, no food, no water, small children, so we had to come back down the same day. The kids recovered well but my husband and I could barely move the next day. 🤣

Happy New Luke, Did my first hike of 2023 last weekend. A trip around Blakey Ridge, North Yorkshire in rain and fog. Enjoyed it however I think i should of 'Nik waxed' my gore tex jacket again before the trip. Talking about boxing, I used to Kickbox when I was in my 20's. Used to take lessons with a school friend of mine. Our instructor who had his own business wasn't doing so well and started to suffer from depression. Well sadly he took his own life and as a result I stopped training. My friend however later went on to take up Karate, and now is nearing his Black Belt! I'm in my 7th month of stopping drinking alcohol and going back to the gym. Lost weight and purchased a punch bag of Market place, which I train daily in my garage. i find that my left arm is stronger when i punch even though I'm right handed. Do you have or still train with a punch bag? If so I hope you enjoy getting back into training and would also like to wish you and your family all the best for 2023 :)

I love hikes from hell. They make such great drink beer and share times! A book should be written with stories of nothing but "hikes from hell"! My hike from hell is going straight up the side of Mt. Pilchuck (North Cascades), 2300ft ascent, covered in melting snow, in shorts. Don't EVEN ask. My husband decided we didn't need the trail, which was covered in snow, anyway. I looked like I had been in a catfight when I reached the top. Somehow, shorts and climbing on rocks in melting snow do NOT mix. Love your videos. Don't everstop!

My first car had an inline 6. It was a 1968 Chevy II Nova. She wasn't a speed demon, but she had torque and was built like a tank. I actually pulled down a decent sized barn by hitching a chain around the bumper and several support beams. I also pulled a police car out of the ditch on a cold rainy night. That officer was so thankful. It was a heavy car and being rear wheel drive, I kept about 10, 50lb bags of sand in the trunk for traction when it was wintry in the midwest. Gas mileage was horrible for a 230 cubic inch 6 cylinder in this car, but the things it could do were amazing. Years later I owned a 1979 Corvette with a modified fuel injected 396 V8 engine that had loads of speed, it got better gas mileage than the old Nova did. The old Nova, maybe 15 miles per gallon. The vette, 20 miles per gallon.

My trip from hell. December 4 1996 and why I will never forget this day. I volunteered for a hardcore unit in the army, 11th airmanouvre brigade(red berets) and was in training. So the 4th we had a water training and they loaded us in trucks and drove us to a river. It was just above freezing, raining and very windy like 6 bft. The training was 3 or 4 different things. Learn how to make your 120 liter Berghaus backpack float using the goretex bivi of the sleeping bag and swim across. Build a raft to support like 7 guys with gear. Paddle across the river in a zodiac without a motor. The doctor told the instructors the water was too cold to swim so they made us walk in the water along the banks to our neck. The wind was too strong to paddle across and the raft sucked. And walking up and down a soggy field make it like a mud pool. We were soaked and all the gear covered in mud.
And out of nowhere this zodiac with a powerful outboard comes flying over the river and in it an instructor dressed as santa claus holding on to his hat. And Santa had some presents. A guy who went to the red light district got a blow up doll etc. That made our day.
The aftermath was insane cause all our gear was soaking wet and caked in mud and had to be clean the next morning for inspection. We had this bathroom with 8 showers and like 15 sinks right for 1 platoon. There were guys totally dressed standing in the showers with all their gear scrubbing it all clean and all sinks were occupied. People using a fire hose etc. At the end the bathroom looked like a bomb went off. Mud was like 3 meters high on all the walls. And of course my room had cleaning duty for the bathroom that week.
We agreed to get up at 4 am so 3 hours before inspection to try and clean it. Hosing the walls down and scrubbing. 3 hours with 7 guys and it was just impossible to get it properly clean with all the sand everywhere. It wasn't much fun but I will never forget that day for the rest of my life. My trip to hell.

Getting hit hard physically in your life makes you realize that you don't want physical confrontation if possible, so you try and avoid it. But, if it comes down to it, you are more prepared to handle it. It better be worth the pain! No one really wins in a fight anyway. I walked out of MMA-type matches while I trained in martial arts having won, but it took me weeks to heal I also lost many matches as well. At 62, those injuries are haunting me now. Great advice!!! By the way, UA-cam loves advertising on your channel. There are more commercials than I ever see on other channels I follow. Must be a good thing, I guess.

Hello Luke, I am currently in NC , Hendersonville, visiting family , in particular my grandson Charlie. For lunch today , besides cottage cheese, apples and chicken, we watched this episode. Charlie ( 15 mos.) listened and watched intently, while I explained all the things he was seeing in your episode. I explained how someday grandma Tammy will take him out hiking ,exploring and it will be our special times together. He is likely your youngest fan LOL. He watched the entire episode ( he does not live with a TV or lots of daily audio content, this was a treat).
Loved the story and just plain old conversation. I am glad you spoke about addressing anger and using boxing as the outlet, woman experience that as well..identifying the problem and finding an acceptable solution is admirable. My New Year resolutions: continue healthy life choices, be a better friend and family member, volunteer for something! I can give back!..most important Retire in December...(ONE MORE, get use to my camera and how to take good pics without AUTO.)
Ohh and snakes..totally afraid of..don't know how I will handle that...NY has nothing poisonous...this will be a challenge..however what challenges you, will change you! Best always Luke, hello to NC..

I’m so interested in the strange national and forest disappearances tbh though I can see how it be easy they are enormous amounts of land and thick dense forest. I watch too much of the Bigfoot/cryptid stuff though and terrify myself 😂 I know but really k think the woods and darkness can cause imagination to run wild and in cases come to life. My resolutions are to apply myself 100% to my new role as cabin crew at British airways. Hoping that I get through it all ok, I’m being very laser focused. I live on the coastal side of the state of Oregon. My x-husband and all our friends went to MANY MANY concerts in Portland Or. to get there we had to drive thru DENSE forest Hwy to get to Portland from the coast. Since I do not drink, I always was the designated driver on the trip home. As a result, while everyone else is crashed out in the suburban sleeping the trip home, I saw some really crazy weird stuff during the witching hour on that 2-hour drive back to the coast.
The deep pacific NW forest has some really unexplainable things living in it.
I now live in Eugene Or, still considered coastal forest, and we have people go missing around here every single year.

@@blackjack19811 we lived in Warrenton and went to Portland frequently for nighttime events. Hwy 26 is ONE CREEPY HWY!!! One time, I was driving quite slow due to fog and rain, and at 3am I passed a VERY TALL man wearing ill fitting top hat and tails. My Suburban had big tires and was lifted, so it was tall, but as I passed him he slowly turned his head and looked right at me thru the window he was so tall. He was thin and very very white skin, the skin on his face was stretched so tight across the bones of his face and it looked like he had no lips, just a sneer or weird smile. I stared at him with my mouth wide open and as I looked at him in my rear view mirror he began to run at me. I hit the gas to the floor and got out of there.
Another time, same stretch of road a very tall thin man was “jogging” in an adult diaper, same situation, white skin, stretched so thin over his bones, his arms and legs were LONG and skinny, his hair was white and long and bald in patches, and as I passed him I noticed he picked up the pace and started running at me. I hit the gas and got out of there.
ANOTHER TIME, (I know, right!!?), closer to the coastal turnoff onto Hwy 101, an animal was in the middle of the road, it reminded me of a hyena, it was tall in the front, and droopy in the back with short legs, it was a big animal and tall like a deer, it had horns like a ram, but a face like a dog, it’s color appeared to be a brown brindle but was hard to tell in the early morning hours. I passed it, stopped in my lane and kept looking at it in my rear view mirror, as it remained in the middle of the road staring at me. Finally it gave a weird growl bark (?)……and loped off into the brush.
These events have all occurred between 2am-4am, and always when I’m the only one on the road. There are things in our woods, no one can explain.

@@staceytroffer8287 That is for sure some creepy stuff. I have taken 26 a few times but I didn’t spend much time up on the north coast all my moms family was from Rockaway-Manzanita area so I did spend some time further up north but not a ton.
The craziest thing I saw on my middle of the night drives was on HWY 22 right by Dallas it was a clear spring night at about 1 am so no one on the roads. I saw a really bright light up in the sky close to being above me well I kept watching it and it split into 2 lights going opposite ways. As a kid I was always scared of UFO’s the movie Fire in the Sky scarred me as a kid. Ha ha needless to say I got hit the gas and got up that highway as fast as I could.

    Hey Luke,
Thanks for another great video !!
I was wondering if you plan on doing some videos on low cost light weight gear, like a complete loadout for hiking & camping ?
I started taking my son with me more on my trips , he can't carry much yet (8 years old)...so I carry almost everything using a Berghaus Crusader 90+ 20 pack .
He doesn't like tarp camping (prefers a tent) think it's a "feeling safer in an enclosed space " thing .
It's mostly a reduce weight & bulk thing for me and a better shelter for him/us .(something that can fit an adult and a child & gear comfortably)
We would love to see how you would do it , what gear , how you pack your backpack etc etc , without breaking the bank (or my back hahaha). any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Keep up the good work .
    Strength & Honor .

I trusted him. We got there late, set up camp, and went to bed. In the morning, we were surrounded by cows. My dog was barking incessantly, and the water he said we were by was none other than a gross muddy watering hole for cows. We packed up and moved quickly.

I set a resolution this year to get in better health, and shape. While I didn’t get started on it right away, I did start a few months ago at 289 lbs, I’m currently at 259 and feeling great so far!
This is part of me wanting to manage my own chronic pain (cervical spine injury/neurological disorder) and my plan is to get to my target weight of 175, get back into being active and try physiotherapy to build up lost muscle in my neck.
I used to give up on goals but this time is different. I had a minor health scare last year regarding my stomach and my asthma, I noticed difficulty breathing after eating and that lead to anxiety and panic attacks. I’ve had enough of that and it’s time for change.

Interesting talk about the temper control. I used to play Walleyball ( volleyball in a Raquetball court). I was not a very good player Often times the opposing team would serve to me because they knew that I was the weak link and would probably fail to return or set the ball. Of course, it was only a game but at the moment it would incense me that they would do that. After I realized that they were taunting me for the express purpose of getting me angry so that I would lose concentration and blow the play, I began to work on controlling my temper so that I would have only one thing to concentrate on, Namely, the ball. The more I could focus my concentration, the better I played. That game really helped me learn the value of controlling my temper and having less buttons to push.

We had a huge tarp over our coolers and picnic table strung up in the trees fortunately. Mushrooms came up that glowed in the dark like green alien sentinels everywhere. We were running out of firewood that was dry to burn. Iremember my Dad showing my brothers how to split a 4' wide tree trunk to get with an ax and 2 wedges. I realize now that was worth the trip, but it was miserable being stuck inside a tent or tarp for most all of it. We never did get much chance to walk around, or explore.
