Thank you so much for this video. Just finished comp modding a SMS2 thanks to your video. I did put in both audio channels for dual mono. Put in a 100Ohm resistor and 470uF capacitor between the video wire and the RCA socket. Took off the underside bodge wire as well.
I was watching a different video then it skip to this one and I looked up and was just shocked and was like what have you done 😂. Then I realise that you were fixing that Massacre of a mod. Good work at fixing it.
The original Master System did use the 5-pin DIN for AV out, but the main reason I was thinking of the 9-pin miniDIN from the Mega Drive was because it also carries RGB for those inclined.. also smaller means smaller hole so it could fit in the space already provided by the RF output on the SMS2
You mentioned removing the RF modulator to make room for the RCA jacks. If you do that, can you just unsolder it and leave the circuit as-is, or do you need to put some components in to keep the supporting circuitry happy? (Great vid btw!)
Great question! The RF modulator on the SMS2 picks up power, ground, composite video, and mono audio, which it then uses to produce the RF out. It's completely passive and output only, so you can safely remove it without affecting the existing system!

After watching your video, I'm confident in doing the Composite mod to this one. I saw the modded systems for years and couldn't justify the purchase. But seeing how easy it really is, I'm keen to give this a go! I had an ebay buy 12 years ago too that was DOA. I tried replacing the regulator first, no luck. I even tried replacing the pause switch, thinking if the switch was shorting out, then that would hold the system's NMI pin in place. Although I don't recall if the Z80's NMI is edge or level triggered. That fix failed and I opted to hang the motherboard on my wall as nostalgic art.
Also, it shows you never owned a Master System. To anyone that did, the first thing you do when a cartridge doesn't work is take it out and blow on it. It's the rules :)
so they connected the vcc out of the 7805 to the led and then to VDP ground? basically they blew up the led into becoming a wire, shorting and burning the 7805 as well ?
I don't know what they were thinking, it wasn't in danger of blowing anything up, it was just completely incorrect and never would have worked in any intended way at all... thankfully!
I wonder if the solder on the Sonic The Hedgehog 2 cart was a previous effort to dump the ROM without de-soldering the actual chip? Possible. Especially if it was done by the same person responsible for the original Composite mod.

Nice work! If I would standardise on one av socket it would probably be a 5 pin DIN, since so many machines in the day used those.

ipa would remove that hot snot. a lot easier than remelting it

It's possible! I didn't really look at which pins had solder on them...
