I am NOT an expert, I have genuinely NO idea what I'm doing, and mostly just glue things together and use a lot of Google-fu until stuff works. I've been tinkering with electronics since I was a kid but have no formal training and will probably do things incorrectly. If you learn something from this, that's awesome, but trust me - I'm learning too!

Mine has white screen brightness doesn't work and also no sound. This is after a recap so its not the caps. Unit did work fine for a few hours now it does this.
oh shit i want one !! i just got 3 compaq portable recently ( 1 compaq portable 1 , and two compaq portable 2 ) i manage to bring back to life one of the two compaq portable 2 , still have the keyboard to restore , but i"m stuck with only 640k ram , no ram upgrade cards in mine sadly
je cherche la valeur de R7 derrière les deux condensateurs de 330uF par avance merci
Where'd you get the part, and is it possible you can send the link? Thanks!
This looks smaller than the Pico ZX. It's fantastic that it even has the C64 function keys. Is this project on PCBWay? Is there a way to purchase a completed unit?
Great video! I just bought a modded system loaded with games but none of the games except Atari/nes will play can you possible help me out I think I got scammed on my buy any advise would help it has a 3tb with the clock capacitor removed
Does this fully dim/off or just dimmer than bright?
I gotta do this on a 10Nes chip because the leg I need for regionality is broken
I had this problem and my solution was to not push the cartridge fully into the machine.
One game gear Im trying to fix the sound board dial is so rusted maybe that’s the problem why there’s no sound, another unit Im trying to fix is missing a piece, the one that looks like a coil with six feet in your soundboard. Both dont have any sound, maybe I’ll change the rusted dial with the other good one
You just saved my bacon. Had same issues with finding a schematic and was pleased to follow along and triple check my issues. Exact same issue, zener open and transistor exploded.
I want one and hope to build something similar soon can I contact you somehow I'm also in Australia (Brisbane)
Something you can do to test CRT monitors is shine a bright UV (black light) lamp at the front for a few minutes, then look at the CRT in the dark. It will be illuminated and you can see the burn in more clearly or see if there is any hidden burn that sometimes does not show.
silvestron is my uncle🐕💖😃
I recently managed to get a T4400SXP, that's the one with a gas plasma screen. It was sold as "for parts", but I managed to fully revive it! Ended up testing and replacing most of the capacitors, plus a fuse on the plasma panel power supply board. Also had to patch up a few traces on the power board + motherboard. Really happy with the result, the plasma panel appears to be in very good condition, it's bright and no observable burn-in. I also got the Desk Station IV docking station with the thing, so that's a nice plus!
That's awesome to hear, thanks for sharing! Been on the look out for one of those for a while, love me a gas plasma display 😍
Wow, that's a rare find. Great that you've been able to repair it too. Hopefully you could put some pictures of it online since there don't appear to be any pictures of it running apart from press / magazine photos. Oddly I also got my T4400C with the Desk Station IV, which the original owner was using as the power supply for it - might be the only way to get sound on it since the DeskStation also had a soundblaster and CD drive in it. This video does kind of demonstrate that it's no speed demon though :)
Whats the name.of the tool you used to check the frecuency osilation (the one that shows the graph)
Hey! That's a DSO (digital storage oscilloscope) - I have the Rigol DS1054Z and the on screen picture in this vid is from a program called DS Remote, though I've sometimes also just pointed a camera at the Rigol's LCD screen
Just discovered your channel. Love your content. My first computer was a C64 and seeing the care and love you have for them just makes me smile. Also really appreciate that you don’t bury your videos in awful music and use it sparingly and appropriately. So much overstimulation on YT these days and this type of quiet detailed content is a diamond in the rough.
Wow thank you, that means so much! C64 was also my first computer, so a very warm spot in my heart for them and other gear around that era
What a fantastic idea. Great execution. Thanks for sharing this
Enjoyed the video. Thanks for putting this up.
Hi! question regarding a 1541... When I turn on the drive, there are not lights at all, but I can hear the motor and see the (don't know its name) circular thing which goes in the middle of the diskette spinning around... do you have any idea about what could be the problem? many thanks in advance and for your time
36:07 heh. Grab my joystick. 😜
Great video. I especially enjoyed the scope work and the explanations.
Thanks mate, appreciate it. Glad that my explanations actually made sense too! 😅
Nice video! I feel your pain with forgetting to switch sources, forget ground, etc 😂. Nice that the replacement ram worked by grounding the extra line. Glad to see it working again!
I especially feel it when I've been looking at the same problem for so long.. start to lose the first for the trees!
Quick and easy fix. That crystal was nasty 🤮
Still no idea what it was, looked like cola or something... Not brave enough for the taste test 😅
Your comment on Soder-Wick inspired me to look this up: Up until the mid 1800s British English pronounced 'solder' with the L silent. North Americans kept the old pronunciation, while the rest of the empire evolved.
Neat, never knew that!
Good thing they don't use those horrible NiCd batteries that leak all over the place.
I have PTSD from nicad damage 🙃
Awesome!!!
I have a game gear with exactly the same problem. Do you fix them for people?
Thank you so much for this video. Just finished comp modding a SMS2 thanks to your video. I did put in both audio channels for dual mono. Put in a 100Ohm resistor and 470uF capacitor between the video wire and the RCA socket. Took off the underside bodge wire as well.
Those scorch marks could be chemical burn from cap leakage? Also, you could use the good board to check meter values and compare.
Possible! There's no residue though, so what I think happened is someone plugged in a regular center positive 9v supply, killed the 7805 and also backwards voltage to everything in this video board toasted a few things... it's a pretty easy mistake to make and catastrophic :(
New Sub; Detroit, Michigan, US That is AWESOME! I've Wanted this thing for Decades, I dont remember what Magazine I saw it in, 80s/90s, but I remember seeing this in an Article along-side the SEGA/IBM 386 PC. I have Never seen one of these before, but I have always wanted to try one out for some reason LOL
I'd never seen one before a couple of years ago when I found my one on FB marketplace, and I just fell in love. They're so much fun!
Even better are the switching mode 7805 equivalents so you no longer need those chonky heat sinks.
True, though they can introduce a bit of switching noise into the video circuitry, so I still prefer to use a linear regulator where possible
Hope you work it out. Thank you for fixing my SEGA a year or so ago. FYI - those Segas are notorius for cracked solder joints on the carport.
Still one of my proudest fixes :)
9V across the fuse? Guessing it's blown then 🙂
But getting voltage beyond it? I must have mis-understood what you meant...
@@tassiebob I think I meant I'm able to measure the input 9v getting through the fuse, as in the fuse is healthy
Put it into H!
Would this need any modification to work in a Compaq Armada 7700 series? They also use the Citizen W1D
It should be a drop-in replacement anywhere a Citizen W1D is used, but I haven't personally tested with an Armada nor have I had any feedback on it. If you get one and it works, please let me know so I can update my Compatibility list at silvestron.com/openflops-w1d/ !
The original batteries had RCA labels
I also want to convert USA version to European power supply ( from 120 to 230v 50hz). Can I use the same spec caps as you for 230v?
Yes, it should be exactly the same change. Just remember to change the fuse as well.. good luck and stay safe!
@@silvestronsbitsandbytes Thank you for advice, and great video, keep sharing!
Beautiful! I have a question. I didn't realize there was a 4700c. I was thinking about buying the 4700sx, but then I also saw a 4700ct. The main reason I am looking at the first two is of course the orange gas plasma display. I couldn't find much about the CT. Do you happen to know if it has the orange gas plasma display? Thanks for reading this.
Mine after greasing up the motor on the CD mech works, but strangely when powered on spins anticlockwise and takes about 5 mins to warm up before it wil read a disc (spinning it the correct way, clockwise). Caps seem ok on visual inspection. any ideas why it needs to "warm up" and why the motor spins anticlockwise slowly when powered on by not reading a disc?
Excellent video. I have two of these machines. One of them fixed up for now (recapped systemboard, inverter and remaining screen caps + cf/ide 512mb CF). The other one is still to be fxed (as soon as you connect it to power, it will power on regardless of how the power-switch is on or off). They are quite nice machines. Not the fastest ones around, but otherwise quite cool.
Hello. That is a great modification, one that should have been done from factory. Please execuse my lack of knowledge. I'm trying to have the nVidia Shield TV (same as the one in this video) as the main headunit in my car. I have a broken Shield power brick, so I bought a 12v to 19v 3amp buck converter. I snipped the wire from the power brick, connected it to the output of the buck converter and plugged it in. The nVidia logo showed up and my happiness was short lived. As the screen turned off. Any ideas what could I be doing wrong? I measured the output of the buck converter to be 19.16v Appreciate any help.
I've had my Citizen W1D open no less than 50 times since replacing the belt trying to get it to work. You'll probably be getting a new order soon hahaha
Always so satisfying
Nick where can you buy that extended battery rom pack? That is really handy..!
If you're talking about the RTC replacement, there's plenty of them around. Necroware's nwX287 or Glitch Works GW-1287 are probably the most well known and available, and of course I have my SB1287 variant available in my store ;)
Great video! I've done the HSIO screen a few times now, and it's a very similar process. Looks good!
Underrated video
Great work..!! I wish i couldt fix those things like you do..
Awesome work! I've got around ten or so old laptops I'm going through reviving. Currently working on a Compaq LTE Elite 4/75CX that's almost untouched. Waiting for a belt for the Citizen W1D. The drive looks brand new other than the deteriorated belt. Not a spec of dust.
I was watching a different video then it skip to this one and I looked up and was just shocked and was like what have you done 😂. Then I realise that you were fixing that Massacre of a mod. Good work at fixing it.
