If you like 3D printing, why not enjoy it in a video game? In this video, I test 3D PrintMaster Simulator on Steam, a 3D print farm management video game. It promises building, upgrading and maintaining 3D printers, and using them to create customer jobs on command. The reality is a game full of potential that falls short on execution, so I’ve tried to provide some constructive feedback and suggestions to take the game forward.
I originally received a code free of charge to test this game from the developer. However, I also purchased a copy and gifted it to my nephew on Steam. My total gameplay was just over three hours.

This is strange, surreal meta video - I'm watching a video about someone playing a game about 3d printing. We live in a strange world!

I would say that the game is more realistic than people might realize. Everything from the paltry profit from each print to the slow progress and the constant break downs. They even added the great decorating sense of the average 3D printing nerd.
It's a contender for Starfield's "most innovative gameplay" award. 5-stars!

I find it funny because when I need to work on my printer a lot of times I put it on the floor and sit down. Screws don't travel as far when you drop them when you're already on the floor.

Intriguing. I think a simple solution for the depth perception issue (placing objects in 3D space on a 2D screen is hard) could be to have a little circle/shadow on whichever surface is directly beneath the object. This is usually achieved using a decal or projector in platforming games, to aid in positioning the player character.

I'm reminded of the game Uplink, which has a similar concept but with computers. I would echo the suggestion of adding challenging print jobs (e.g. exotic materials, detailed/large prints, bulk orders, deadlines), but I would also add repeat customers, working with "famous" designers, as well as choosing different types of printers for the job (whether cartesian, corexy, delta, belt etc.). One thing definitely missing is the initial printer calibration rite of passage.

Now there's a game I could have sworn I would never hear about ever again...what a good time it was. The only jobs I didn't care for as much were the ones requiring LAN hacks, those always seemed to trip me up more than they should have. Granted, independently hacking a fat bank account and transferring it to yourself before the authorities can catch up with you was plenty challenging as well, though the reward was quite worth the trouble.
Perhaps this simulator could have something similar, where you need to perform one or more minigames to kitbash a bunch of components together to create an extra-fast or more durable printer?

I just wanted to comment on this video to let you know how appreciative I am of you and all you do. I learend how to 3D model from your onshape series and have been designing and printing my own parts to fix things around the house and creating things that bring me joy and generally make my life easier. I got a printer for Christmas and although it was "cool" i was ready to put it in the attic after a week of printing crap from thingiverse. I stumbled on your onshape videos and now my 3d printer is my most prize possession. You didnt just save my 3d printer, you taught me an invaluable skill i will carry with me for the rest of my life.

seems the game is in early alpha. nno in game tutorial, no way to actually send packages, people appearing and disappearing inside your apartment, clunky item mechanics, etcetera. so, perhaps a first time ame dev a well, using premade models and building really basic functions around them. almost a proof of concept at this point.

First of all, I'll let you know that it has nothing to do with the channel, it's just a rant about the world of 3D printing.
Today, I bring a different perspective on 3D printers, based on the research I carried out.
I came to a conclusion that I would like to share.
I have a comment about the world of 3D printing, which, contrary to what some say about accessibility, is still a world for few. Despite the criticism I may receive for this, I believe that although printers have become more affordable, there is still a long way to go before they become an achievable dream for many people, including myself.
It's not just the initial cost of the printer that must be considered. An often overlooked point is the ongoing cost of the filament. Just like in the early days of inkjet printers, where the price of ink was an obstacle, today we face similar challenges with filament. Even though printers have become a little cheaper, filament remains a considerable investment.
It is notable that over the years we have not seen a significant reduction in filament prices. There appears to be a lack of real competition, resulting in companies setting prices almost like a monopoly. Filament quality is also a concern, with reports of poor quality not justifying the investment.
Another aspect that is rarely addressed is the amount of material wasted due to unsuccessful prints, especially for beginners. Even though errors decrease over time, they do not disappear completely. This is a relevant point to consider, as it contributes to additional costs and not to mention environmental issues.
That's why I say it and I repeat, cast the first stone if anyone who has never been through this, even with vast experience, still prints with errors and has to do it all over again, no matter the printer or your knowledge, there will be errors and as a result waste of material and input costs. what we need and start thinking about this issue, well the filament should be cheaper or there should be a collection of inputs by suppliers especially those that went wrong or leftovers that new printers leave to make multicolor parts and why not buy back the material, it would help the person who bought it and nature thanks you.

There's educational value. Simulating common processes, or failure modes can help someone not familiar learn in a low-cost entertaining way. Having levels of challenge, and some guidance at lowest level could make this possible.
For a noob, the current sim could result in an overload of frustration. It has potential.

got damnit, this is something that thought about like a week ago, maybe with different time settings: early reprap, the big boom, etc... but this looks like this is just a cheap unity asset flip to cash in on 3D printing. My version would have more features, like a reliability score (a cheaper printer would have a larger chance of failure than a more expensive one, but you could also mod your cheap one to perform better),. Sadly I can't really make games... So if the developer is reading this, get in touch...
