Being korean living in rural Alabama, I almost cried because that boy was me.
Aw
No Spoilers, please!
The coolest kids I grew up with were always the kids from korea
Its all good
Lies
“grandma smells like korea” that line stayed in my head for some time because i realized that i understood that. lol. they do smell like home and i miss that
I miss the smell of Mothballs a lot
I guess that boy doesn't like grandma's unsophisticated behaviours and the traditional custom of Korea.. So I think "Grandma smells like Korea" that expressions are constructed from the child's perspective because that boy doesn't like his grandmother. Many young children in Korea love their grandparents and grandparents, but they smell of old people and are scared. Especially, some children born and raised in cities do not like the Korean countryside very much.
I was also scared when I had to sleep with my grandpa, but when I realiezed my grandpa is gone by my me.. I just cried a lot because I couldn't say "I love you" so much..
Next time I visit my grandma in Korea I’m gonna take a lot of video of her and record her voice calling me. So that I could keep it forever even after she’s gone...
I love my Korean grandma so much.. When she saw that my blankie was all old and holey, she patched it for me with her cute patterns
The line brings me a painful memory of how I treated her when I was little. I wish I could go back and tell her how sorry I am for what I did to her.
This is not just Korean, it's too relatable for an Asian. This is living an 'American Dream' for an average Asian family.
...yes there are only asian immigrants.
For all immigrant families in US. Minari is displaying what every single immigrant family goes through. It is 100% more relatable for asians because Minari is about Korean immigrants, but this is a common story for any race and ethnicity in US
I’m Latinx and I teared up with this trailer. It’s so relatable

Minari is a edible weed grows mostly in Eastern Asian countries. Its strong and peculiar smell and taste makes korean foods' taste that has minari in it really unique.
Unfortunately, some young native koreans hate the strong-green-grass-smell of minari since it's very strong. So probably some part of young Korean-Americans would hate it too.
If i'm assuming correctly, i think the director is trying to tell the story of all three different generations of a Korean-American family who have different perspectives and thought processes.
Wow thanku!

So far, Steven is the only Asian actor I saw in American entertainment having a role as a normal guy. People don't realize how sadly the American media discriminates against race. It's kind of funny but true is that I never saw an Asian man making out or even hugging a girl on TV until Glenn in TWD. Asian men are always in a role as funny, submissive, nerdy, passive, and what have you. On the other hand, it is a quite different story with Asian women. I really don't want to elaborate on this but I think you know what I mean. Anyway, it's good to see some changes.
By the way, this movie was made in the USA with many American actors with American everything. Anyone know why this film is listed as a foreign film?
Golden Globe's racist rules forced them to apply in the foreign film category. They can't fathom seeing a non-English (so basically non-White) film compete for the top awards.
hey I'm actually not familiar with the asian women portrayals. Can anyone elaborate? Is it with the couple pairings? (with white men?)
@@violethaye6987 i think he's referring to the "funny, submissive, nerdy, passive" part -- yet asian women are consistently sexualized and infantilized so nobody really has it better

I nearly saw Ms. Purple when it was making the festival circuit, but this seems like it's being received far better! I'd still like to see it - another film about Korean life in America - but I think this will come first.
A lot of my Korean friends share very similar stories, it just sucks that most Korean people I meet here in the states who are over the age of 30 or so have the impression that I’m bigoted towards them until they see I have Korean friends.
Amen. I think I even said something to the effect of "Grandma smells like Korea" to my parents when my grandmother came to stay with us.
As a Filipino American, I feel the same.
Seeing this trailer made me cry so much. My life, while not rural, was much like this. With no asian role models in the 80s I hated being Korean and slowly even forgot most of the language and was mean to my grandma that loved me and raised me. Now I'm so proud to be Korean and trying to get to my roots. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Have you read American Born Chinese? It's a very surprising graphic novel. I recommend it highly. I don't want to give anything away, but I think that a lot of Asian kids from the 80s grew away from their roots.

Minari is a reflection of what my family and I experienced. My family and I moved from Los Angeles in the late 80's to northern Mississippi. This, to me- is America. Every American family has its start as outsiders, with a desire to grow. We all share that in common. And thank god im seeing Steven Yeun in something new and good! After he left the walking dead, there was a big gap left in the show. This dude will shine if you let him! This trailer really says it all, I’m so excited to see this!

This trailer looks so comfortably clean and neat.
As most korean things !
I see a lot of people commenting and saying "wow, another good Korean movie." Make no mistake, this is not a Korean movie. This is an American movie and possibly one of the most American movie that has come out in a long while. This tells the story that is fundamentally American, a son and daughter of immigrants growing up with 2 cultures, and having to weave around and find their identity. It also tells the story of recent immigrants looking to make a foundation for their children. If you are not a Native American (as in part of a Tribe), you are either 3 things: 1). you are an immigrant 2). you are a son or daughter of immigrants, or 3). you are a descendent of a son or daughter of an immigrant. They are all tied in. There is no "non-immigrant white person." That is a complete and utter myth.
It's Korean
correct on all counts. America is a country of immigrants and settlers. This is an American story, hopefully of an American Dream realized. Can't wait to see it!
Immigrant stories aren't unique to America, this is an immigrant movie not solely an American one, if you want to be pedantic and say there is no non immigrant white person, then we can make the case that there is no non immigrant anyone because at some point even the natives migrated to the Americas from somewhere else, you have a very american centric view on life it seems
@@user-ts2ny8jg9d you are on an american website, watching a trailer for an american movie and you think this should encompass the world? lol. We are Americans and that is what we know and talk about.
@@user-ts2ny8jg9d Oh and just to educate, there is a big difference between migration patterns that happened thousands of years ago vs ships coming from Europe a few hundred years ago to a land that was already inhabited. As a Korean American myself, I can’t agree, I came to America when I was 8 and I just adapted in my own standards, it was easy and I don’t get why people have hard time. The only thing that was hard for me was my parents’ expectation of my English.
@@ultimatechojian1159 That's completely valid, yet you should also consider the fact that this is a genuine, lived experience for other immigrants. I'm sure you can sympathize with people uprooted from their home country, for people that have a harder time adapting to new environments. It isn't an uncommon feeling.
@@ultimatechojian1159 It really depends on your socio-economic class. I know a lot of immigrants who didn't struggle as much as others due to either moving into a better neighborhood, the environment having a lot of other people of the same ethnicity, or just having more money overall. Not really actually. He did a great job with his Korean in Burning which was a Korean movie so he probably worked really hard with an accent coach, but even in the trailer for this I hear an American accent when he pronounces ㄱ (g sound) as ㅋ (k sound) which is pretty typical of lots of second-generation Korean-Americans. But, he still does a great job considering that he's not a native speaker!!!

Don't get me wrong, there were definite moments of overt racism towards my African-American peers that I witnessed, but a lot of the prejudices I witnessed her and other POC experience in our small Georgia community were often a result of ignorance and a lack of education.
At the end the grandma says, "pretty boy". That is such a Korean way for a grandma to call her grandchild whether it is a boy or a girl. Korean grandmas call their grand children "pretty baby" (Yeppeun Aga) or even "pretty poopy 🐶 puppy" (Yeppeun ddong Gang-a-ji). Lol.

Being a KA, I find Koreans of the 1st and some 2nd generations to be the most frustrating, maddening people to deal with, and tragic, self sabotaging at times. Sometimes I don't ever want to interact with another Korean. Yet I still have a heart for the people I come from.
@David Kim I try to avoid Korean churches. Nightmare...
Wow, as a first generation Filipino American, this one really hit home on so many levels. Great performances by Steve Yeun and the whole cast. BRAVO!

Watching this movie, I felt like a fly on the wall that witnessed a slice of this family’s life. The love, desperation, small celebrations.
Just watched this movie from my DStv channel.i am a hardened grown man from Nigeria, but I cried like a baby
Loved every scene in this movie..it hits home
I started tearing up during the trailer...so excited for this! A24 seriously never disappoints.
I did too... Why do I feel somehow related to the movie while I have zero experience in farming or gardening
Saaamee
it's called music manipulation
Same here 😢
I've only seen 2 A24 movies I didn't like
Into the forest
Tusk
But I've seen at least 20 so it's not a bad rep
I saw A24 and immediately clicked without even giving it a thought
Same! A24 is killing it with great movies.
I see my mother and father's dreams and my own shame as a kid...this trailer brought me to tears
I respect actor Yun Yeo jeong.
Her age is almost 75, but she performed perfect act. This movie is one of the examples of her movies. Through this movie, I want many Americans know about truly "Korean" and to make good relationship.
I love everything about this. It looks like a honest, heartbreaking and heartwarming of everyday people tale. I'm so proud of Yeun's work post twd. He's curating his work exceptionally well and it's no wonder he's had the quality opportunities he's had. I hope this film gets all the attention possible.
I couldn't agree more... This film looks to be a treat and hopefully it turns out to be just that.
Yea, Yeun's fortunately had a very successful post-Walking Dead career. He made some really good choices with the types of roles he's taken, and I'm glad they've paid off well for him as of now.
It won at this years Sundance festival.
He was really good in sorry to bother you imo
Yes, he picks some decent jobs:) I advise you to watch Burning man, if u haven't already
As a Korean-American , seeing this just gives me a lot of Excitement.
Same..! Ugh I know I'm going to cry.. I relate to this
so happy for Steven Yeun's Oscar nom! First ever nomination for an Asian American in Leading Actor category
Who is here after the movie gets nominated for best picture, best director and Best Actor at Oscar. Steven Yeun I am so happy for u. Been your fan since TWD ❤️
As a Mexican-American, son of two immigrants, and growing up in a predominantly White and conservative area, this trailer hit close to home (as I'm sure it did to many other children of immigrants). That scene in which the White kid was staring back, I experienced that many times when I was growing up (at school, restaurants, and while shopping). Growing up with the traditions and culture from your ancestral land while trying to assimilate in land that your parents didn't grow up in, I experienced that. Being bilingual and bicultural, I am that. Can't wait for this film to come out and watch it!
Well, it's out now. Happy viewing.
The scene with the boy does looks like racism, but watching the movie, it was just curiosity, he never saw faces like theirs. He turned out to befriend the kid and even the kid's father wasn't racist towards the kid and they were shown like the typical cowboy from the south.
@Yeirim Kim I mean, you can take it as you want, but to me it's expected to be weirded out by different cultures and physical aspects that are totally foreign to you, especially a kid. You gotta remember this is the 80's in a small town in the south of the USA. The kid probably never seen an asian person before, he was curious, it wasn't racism to me. Later on in the movie they play together and the kid never show ill intent to the kid. When his dad showed up there was clear tension between everyone, but even the dad never said anything bad about the kid being different or their family.
@Yeirim Kim I understand what you're saying, but kids don't have much filter, they are not mature yet. In the movie the asian kid complained about his grandma smell, he wasn't aware he was not only disrespecting her but also potentially hurting her feelings. Now, adults on the other hand shouldn't say things like that, even if they are thinking it.
reading your comment right after three months you posted it. I still can feel the struggle.... best of luck for whatever you, and everyone elses doing in this life...
The director of this film who wrote and directed this film, not only won the highest honor at Sundance, the US Dramatic Grand Jury Prize Award (Best U.S. Indie Film) but he's also attached to a live-action adaptation of Your Name (Ki Mi No Wa). Let's hope he gets it right as the trailer shows he's got this.
Edit: The film just got 6 Oscar nominations including Best Picture and took home Best Supporting Actress for Youn Yuh-Jung.
Wow really. Was gonna give Marc Webb's version a shot regardless, but this news has got me waaayy more interested in the project now.
@@trissc6855 I see parallels of Miyazaki with a touch of Totoro in Minari.

I just watched Minari. Better than I expected. I love the music too. Hope the music score wins Oscar for sure. I also hope the Grandma wins Supporting Actress and Father wins Best Actor. Best Picture would be good too, but Nomadland is a contender to beat.
We just work really really hard, to the point of perfectionism, in the things we care about. We are from a peninsula the size of Ohio and have been constantly invaded and bullied by much larger neighbors for centuries, but we've never been broken. That pressure, over thousands of years, created a people not intimidated by challenges because we know there are worser things than failure so why not give it a shot?

Here’s my man Steven Yuen. This film looks powerful.
I can totally relate to the feeling where my family is standing in the middle of a small church full of caucasians, while they’re just staring and giving us a weird look.. hope this movie comes out soon. I’m ready to burst into tears.

@@francoislechanceux5818 wtf are you even talking about, are you Chinese?
I love this movie on a deeply personal level, like many other people. I myself am a Korean-American who was born in an immigrant family. I found myself identifying with David’s character in particular. Maybe it’s just the fact that I’m the son. Watching this movie took me back to those warm moments when everything was wondrous and you could explore so much and learn about so much new stuff. So many shots in this movie were reminiscent of my own life; the director did a fantastic job translating his own personal experiences onto film. The memories of staying awake while your grandma snores next to you, the calendar paper, the bringing of red pepper powder and dried anchovies from Korea… beautiful movie.
Watched this on a plane ride & unbeknownst to me I ended up fighting back snot, tears, & a little vomit (vomit-motion sickness, probably) 😃 absolute masterpiece. Films like this inspire me so much to be an actor for wholesome projects.
Get Steven Yeun an OSCAR challenge.
We can make it happen!
Yeh!
Please!!
Unfortunately A24 doesn't have a lot of disposable income that can be spent on campaigning.
YAS!
@@caseyaulbach7693 Maybe Plan B does? That's Brad Pitt's production company and they won with 12 Years a Slave, etc.
I’m not Korean, but as a daughter of an immigrant who put everything in his life on the line to provide for his family, I’m extremely excited to see a story like this on the big screen. Representation like this matters and this is a story millions will be able to see themselves in, despite nationality
This is so true. I'm the daughter of hardworking Mexican immigrants and gosh did this comment resonate with me.

Goncalo Fonseca have u ever met a kid before
@Goncalo Fonseca do you live underground or,,,
@dog not because of racism darling
monet then because of what exactly..?
@dog he never claimed otherwise? he just gave the example with the "white kid" because the trailer showed a white kid staring at a korean kid. he literally started his sentence by saying "for any kid of immigrants" -- ANY, meaning white kids as well
Just finished this movie, really one of the greatest I’ve ever seen. The grandma is the best film character I’ve ever seen
Just saw the film, and I have got to say that it brings me a plethora of memories from my childhood in South Korea. Although it has been a couple of years since I came to the U.S., I still remember that particular fragrance of my 할머니 (grandmother in Korean), and I still remember arriving to our first house, what a surreal feeling. But I also felt a profound sense of pride to be a Korean-American, because I am living in a nation that contains a treasure trove of different ethnicities, cultures, and all walks of life that coalesce into the United States of America. Sure, we may be going through hard times now, but I know that we will one day rise again, not only as a united nation, but also as an accepting nation, a nation devoid of hate and replete with dignity and pride. People may call me trite, others may call me a dreamer, yet this nation was built upon dashingly beautiful dreams, was it not?
I can see this story reflected in even the Indian immigrant experience. The immigrant experience is universal, and lovely :)
@Jake Thanks for your opinion, Jake.
