There are a lot of job titles in the instructional design space, and it can be confusing trying to make sense of all of them.
While instructional designers and eLearning developers do have some overlap, they are roles with distinct responsibilities, and one of those roles may be better for you or for the hire you’re trying to add to your team.
Using the ADDIE model of instructional design, we can compare and contrast the tasks and involvement of each role to get a better idea of what each position may be required to do.
In this video, we take a look at the differences between the two roles, the contrast between the job titles themselves, and a few tips regarding how to stand out as an eLearning developer against all the competition out there.

Such a great video, Devlin. I like how you make the differences clear. I love when I get a chance to do ALL of it! That is when I feel the most fulfilled. 🙏
Thanks Hayley! I appreciate the support as always :D. And yes, doing it all is definitely satisfying! Uses a lot of different skills :D
Devlin! I have been recommended for the job and will be speaking with the person I’ll be working under tomorrow morning. I hope this works out but either way, thank you for your videos and support!
Best of luck!! I hope this helped you navigate that conversation :D
Thanks for the clarity between the two titles. This was very helpful in understanding the general expectations of each. My concern was that I have not been exposed to authoring tools such as Articulate 360; but I understand the ADDIE model as a whole. I have a better understanding of the difference between the two "D's" in ADDIE.
You’re welcome! Glad that this gives you some more insight 😃
Bro, you are an absolute life saver!! thanks so much for this. I now understand that I want to be a Hybrid of the two
You’re welcome! And great decision…that opens up the largest number of opportunities in the current market 😃
thank you Devlin...always helpful!!!!!
You're so welcome!!!
Super helpful, thanks! Current K12 teacher trying to learn more.
You're very welcome! Happy to help :D. And there's lots ot learn but I am sure you're making progress every day!
Thank you for the distinction! I'm feel as though I'm doing both. I think many times universities and companies aren't very clear on the distinctions. So, I may be asked to create courses with objectives, learning activities and assessments. Yet, an instructional designer is going to upload it to an LMS.
You're welcome! And yes, the distinction isn't always clear, especially in university settings. Thanks for sharing your perspective with us :D
Although I call myself an E-learning Developer I find myself more often than not wearing all the hats in the process - project planning, analysis, storyboarding, writing, graphic design, course development, etc. I think if you are an E-learning Developer you can't expect that your role won't include many instructional design tasks. I don't find that many compartmentalized projects anymore.
Thanks for sharing your perspective on this, Brian! Definitely a lot of overlap on the responsibilities for different job titles in the field.
Really liking the topics lately!
Thanks Faizan! Appreciate the support :D
As always, thank you!
As always, you're very welcome! :D
Thank you for explaining this. My strengths are in the development phase, not the design phase. I will change my LI header to Instructional Developer.
Being more specific about what you're bringing to the table will definitely help. That, plus a portfolio that showcases what you can really do :D Thanks for watching!
Another great video! This made the distinction crystal clear for me. I’m aiming to transition from a corporate cubicle-bound learning consultant role to a WFA instructional designer!
Thanks Antoinette! We can definitely help with that :D. Plenty of WFH ID positions out there at the moment! Keep us posted on your journey and let us know how we can help :)
Hey Devlin, as always a great video. Just an idea. Would you be willing to do a video, based on some quick research, with some job descriptions and kind of situate us on what they are asking for? For example, I am confused when I see what I consider entry level positions (i.e. based on how much they pay) asking for 3 years of experience. Or maybe I have this all wrong. But if I do, which jobs descriptions indicate an entry level position. And so forth...
It does seem like eLearning developer is a bit more specialized where the ID title can still mean SO many different things. Six months into my first ID job, and I'm still trying to figure out exactly what I ultimately want to do LOL Although I'm finding I'm very interested in the whole process piece. Organizing. Planning. I'm just thinking out loud for myself now.
Haha yes, exactly! eLearning developer is more specialized whereas ID can still refer to so many different things. Thanks for commenting and keep up the great work!
Hi there,
I've been looking into getting a Master's in Learning Experience Design and Educational Technology. I have a background in education and would like to have a degree which can be used in the classroom as well as help me transition out of the classroom min the near future (I've been teaching 18 years.)
What are your thoughts is being able to get an e-dev or ID job with this background?
Thank you! You have brought a lot of clarity with your videos. they are great!
Gotcha. I am someone more interested in the design process personally and will probably look for the "LXD" title ideally when I get to the point of looking for jobs.
However, right now I have no practical experience and am looking at this industry from the outside. I'm learning the main theories on my own and am about to start researching as much about the Articulate suite as I can before downloading the free trial and designing a couple concept courses for a portfolio.
Do you have any pointers for someone at this stage? How can I overcome the challenge of getting into this space without practical experience (or even a degree)?
Of course! Check out the Become an ID playlist here on the channel for more guidance, and the How to Design Effective eLearning video + playlist will help you with project ideas and Storyline builds. There are plenty of Storyline workshops / tutorials on the channel, too, to help with the technical side of things. Best of luck and keep us posted!
Thanks for clarifying this distinction! The video was excellent. I’m leaning towards ELearning development. I’ve dabbled in HTML and CSS but struggled with JavaScript. Any recommendations on helpful tutorials?
You're very welcome! Thanks for checking out the video. And yes, for sure. Check out FreeCodeCamp.org and Scrimba...both are wonderful resources that helped me learn all of those skills from scratch.
hey Devlin - QQ around custom JS - I don't know if you've made a video on this already, but what level of JS understanding do you need to have in order to be able to create custom interactions in Storyline?
This is great information! Can you speak more to the difference between an Instructional Designer and a Learning Program Manager?
You're welcome!! And maybe that will be a topic for another video :D.
Informative
Thanks for watching!
thanks..these terms were definitely becoming blurred!!!!
You're welcome! And yes, they sometimes ARE blurred...even by actual companies who are hiring for these roles, lol
Hi Devlin, Could you suggest some agencies that might be worth applying to?
Hey Kelly! I don't have any specific agencies to recommend, but check out this video with Chris where he talks about his approach to finding work with agencies: ua-cam.com/video/Ivw6pmJpSno/v-deo.html
hi Devlin , could show us how to write instructional storyboard with step by step example, and process example,
Hi! There's a storyboard template video on the channel that may help :D
Recently I found your videos sir, am developing some online educational contents, i want to became an instructional designer. I started to watching your playlist sir. Could you suggest some tips for me..
Thank you 😊
Hi! I'm glad that you've been enjoying the content so far :D. And yes, feel free to grab the Become an ID checklist for my top suggestions along the journey: www.devlinpeck.com/become-an-id-checklist.
what if I am doing the job of developer and as well as checking and give the review the lessons of the other employees, so what should I mention in my cv instructional designer or e - learning developer?
If you have a handle on the full spectrum of eLearning design and development, that's great! If you feel qualified for both roles, you'll probably want to adjust your title on your resume to speak to the specific role you're applying for.
Do instructional designers create and edit instructional videos? Do you have any videos on how to create and edit instructional videos? Thank you.
Please help me... want to learn more about tools used by ID
Hi! Articulate Storyline 360 is the most popular one...you can learn more about it on my channel :D
@@DevlinPeckYT thanks definitely i check
What about python instead of javascript? Is it helpful
