We had some of the BEST snow days back in the late 70's! One year, we got over 4 feet of snow overnight. Right before Christmas. Those snow forts we built for snowball fights with the kids across the street. Good times, good times. 😊

School closures announced by radio was always so exciting. Waking up to snow and waiting by the radio, for the announcer to call your county's name, that school was cancelled. IIRC the '78 snowstorm cancelled the schools in my area for 3 or 4 days.

I still have my toboggan! With the padding and all ropes intact! I honestly forgot I had it and recently found it standing against the wall behind my hoarding pile of boxes of stuff I’ll never use. I’ve got grandkids ranging from 5 yrs to 19 years and you can bet I’ll bring it out next Winter. Our much older cousin used-to pull us on it behind his snowmobile and once his pickup truck around our country neighborhood streets and we went into some mailbox posts, lucky for us the tow rope snapped immediately or it could have turned out bad. Cheers!

Blizzard of 78, I was 10yrs old. Massachusetts was a winter wonderland. The snow was so high, we figured out how to climb onto the neighbors roof, and jump off into the snow drifts until the neighbors mother came out screaming that we were crazy. I think we had at least 5 days off from school and a state of emergency was declared. It must have been a nightmare for the adults, but us kids were having the time of our lives, staying outside all day not coming back home until we were either hurt, half frozen, or hungry, haha. The plastic bread bags on the feet made me laugh, that was definitely a thing back then.

I remember that storm. I was living in western Kentucky and was 11 years old. We made a series of snow people, an igloo with a plywood top and there were tunnels all over the property. I can't remember how many soggy socks we went through (from both our hands and feet after our gloves and mittens were soaked) but it was a great week. Only 5 of us were old enough to play out for long periods of time but I'm sure our parents were glad we were having fun.
Friends from high school told me years later that the Ohio River froze over and a bunch of them walked across to Evansville.🤣

The only ritual we had as kids when the schools were closed because of snow was needing to shovel our long driveway to the street and then needing to go back to shovel again when the snow plow came by and swept the snow back at the end of our driveway so we had to shovel again. You mentioned that today snow days aren't as rare as back then. I remember the blizzard that changed it. Locals call it "the blizzard of '77" and still talk about it today.
Back then the snow had to actually be falling and falling hard for them to close schools. There had been predictions of a huge blizzard but at the start of the school day it hadn't started yet. That soon changed.
I was in grade 9. I had never before seen them close school in the middle of the day. Once classes had started you were there for the day. So you know it had to be bad when the principal announced that the school would be closing at lunch time.
When I went to catch my schoolbus it was snowing so heavy that I couldn't see it just feet in front of me. Idk how the driver got us home safely that day since you couldn't even see the road, but somehow she did.
Some schools closed too late and staff and students were stranded for days. We were off school for a full week because it took that long for roads to be safe for travel.
Entire houses were buried up to or near the roof. There was a story on the news where a police officer had tripped over a car antenna sticking out of the snow by 6 inches. She had reason to believe someone may be inside so they dug it out, only to find another car under it. When they dug the second car out they found a third car under that one!
After that storm they started closing schools if the storms were predicted, even if it wasn't actually snowing yet.

I lived in Western New York for the big snow and ice storm that hit Buffalo in the 70's. My Mom had come home from a hysterectomy the day before, and my grandparents were visiting from Michigan to help care for us kids. The heavy ice snapped a power line that hit the basement and set our house on fire during the night. Half the interior of the house was destroyed, along with all of my grandparents luggage. I remember a firefighter got a couple of my dolls for me in the aftermath, and their faces were covered with smoke. All these years later, I still remember the smell. The smell of an electrical fire is very different from a wonderful bonfire.
As for the snow, I remember wearing the bread bags in my boots to make them waterproof, and all the layers of clothes. We would dig tunnels under the snow but I was always scared of a cave-in so I never went in more than a couple feet. Our neighborhood was full of kids so we'd play outside all day, and there was nothing better than the hot chocolate waiting for us inside! I also remember visiting my grandparents at their lake house in Michigan in the winters. Grandpa would pull us in a sled behind the snowmobile on the frozen lake and it was so fun!

I remember the excitement of watching the storm closures scrolling across the screen, and the agony of going to school further into June to make up for snow day absences. Winter of 79’ we had so much snow drift up on the East side of our house that we built a network of tunnels so complex that we even built in secret rooms. We borrowed a dozen candle sticks from the dining room hutch and fashioned a way with little out cropping’s to hold each candle. Between our body heat and candles the temperature became very manageable to spend hours inside. We almost made it half of a night sleeping in the tunnels one night with sleeping bags but when your clothes and jackets are wet from a day spent on bellies and knees eventually the deep chill became unbearable. We were ones to always want to sleep outside whether in tents or forts. This video nailed it on the emotions that came into play for exciting snow days.

We lived by railroad tracks that were raised up high on a hill which made for good snow mountains. All the kids in the neighborhood would bring anything they could to slide on down that hill. Ironing boards, cardboard, garbage can lids, you name it. My brothers and I would come in the house and my mom would put the oven on and we would warm our frozen feet up by resting them on the open oven door. Mom supervised of course.

When the storm ended it still was bitterly cold and windy, making shoveling snow a huge pain. They ended up being a break from school, but no fun. It was days later after the city cleaned the streets when we had all these piles of dumped snow we could make forts with because there were many chunks to build with.

Only Police &emergency vehicles were allowed on the roads .
My best friend Bob Diazio drove to my house in a 4 W.D. Ford van full of tools , a snowmobile , snow blower , coolers of beer & food etc. And we went out helping people shovel their front doors out from snowdrifts & getting thier cars unstuck from drifts on the highway , giving essential workers a ride to work etc.
We did this just to Get out from cabin fever , help people & have fun .
So many people were giving us tips that when we counted it all up , we had over a $1000.00
A cop pulled us over & we opened up the back doors to show him we were helping people .

I grew up in California and a warmer part so we only had one day in 1976 that it snowed down to our level! It only stayed on lawns, trees and roofs - not the streets or sidewalks so we went to school. As tragic timing was this was the day my sixth grade class was scheduled to go tour the junior high we'd be attending the next year! When we got back to school some punk high school kids had taken the majority of the snow on the main lawns of the playgrounds - acting like they were building some kind of fortress! That didn't last long because the principal and some male teachers were called on to kick them out! Haha!

We got the blizzard of 78/79 here in Chicago. It was great but we had to go back to school earlier than public school due our school only being two blocks away and it was catholic so the nuns were right next door. Public school didn't go back until a week later they were laughing at us because we had to go back. But lol we got even due to being out a week they had to stay at school for another week but we were already out for summer vacation lol 😅

Puffy jackets dont do shit. Then puffy ain't so puffy when it's wet.
AND SNOW IS WET, yeah it looks pretty out there and you might even get that deceptive powder stuff... But it's wet.

It's to bad that kids today only want to stay in and play stupid video games. Those were some of the best times when I was a kid.
