I second this motion, since it's exactly what I'm planning to do irl. I'm a beginner with a Bear Archery Cruzer G2 and I want to pimp all accessories out before I invest in a high end bow, so that I can then take all the good accessories to that better bow. I'd be very interested in your opinion on how much of a difference in tuning this would make while doing it, and in terms of the resulting gains in accuracy.
I'm super excited by this video. I went out and bought a blackout intrigue xs RTH package. Spent 362$ plus 45$ for arrows. I've only shot archery for a month now and today, shot a 283 with this set up. Just goes to show that if your fundamentals are correct, expensive equipment only aids your skill. You make the best of what you have.
This is the reason I love Chris’s channel. He understands that not everyone can afford the very best and it’s encouraging to see him shoot entry level and maybe convince someone new who stumbles on his vids.
Cam Hanes has preached that for years and years now. I wish Chris would do it a little more but he’s a part of the archery generation like myself who have literally the best of the best equipment at our fingertips.
I'd love to see a video where he tunes this bow as it sits as best he can and then shoot it against his best bow. Increasing distance and seeing where the bow improvement really takes effect.
Please do more budget builds in the future. It would be nice if you to review some of the budget bows also. There is a huge population of archers that can not afford all the top tier equipment so having more information on what is the best bang for buck bow builds would be great advice.
Fun fact: Martin Archery used to include a "Draw pin" with every bow, which allowed the customer to block the cam like you did so that draw lengths could be changed and peeps could be installed. Before presses were readily available, we often used ratchet tie-downs hooked to the cams to do the same.
38:13 I just got into modern bows and I have an mxr with slightly better gear. Makes me feel better to see your groups. Not making fun just helps to see a pro shoot with similar gear and their outcome. Great video. I think this is a great idea because new hunters can get discouraged and when we come here and only see gear that is very expensive, it makes you feel like you need this stuff and when it’s just to get meat in the freezer we may not want to spend thousands. Thank you!
Great video. Shows everyone it can be done on a low budget and works well as a starting point. I'm sure this will help some of the younger kids watching and saving money for a entry bow into archery and following in your foot steps. Thanks Chris
My bow is fairly budget it is a diamond infinite edge pro bow package witch comes with most accessories you need, and then I got A trophy ridge volt sight and a bowmar nose button it is really acurate and pretty cheap if you want to check that out my release is a tru ball blackout I think It may be a different one but whatever release works is good enough
I just bought this bow the other day!! Thanks Chris! I was trying to find a good budget bow, and after I saw this video I knew it was the right one for me. I love it! I’ve harvested 5 deer with a rifle, hoping to get my first one with a bow this fall!
@chrisbee can you put your grip on the mission hammr, I have one and already watched this 3 times , thank you for everything and my local bow shop is the bow rack and bought your merch for Christmas and so epic!!! In fact I’m wearing your merch rn sooooo comfortable
I really enjoy watching these bow builds. I have learned so much. I’m tired of going to pro shops around my area which always seems to do something wrong. When I first bought my bow a while back I had cabellas do everything for me and come to find out they screwed up a lot of things. I then took it to a pro shop to install my drop away rest and after getting home and shooting a couple arrows my drop away fell. They forgot to tighten it down. This is when I decided to start building my own bows. These bow builds have helped so much. Thank you.
Thank you for this. I would really like to see you do the same with the top of the line Mission, and maybe do a middle of the road type of setup. I appreciate watching the builds, gives me more confidence to address things when something goes wrong.
I currently have the mxr and it has a pretty good back wall not spongy at all, I shoot pretty good groups at 50 yards have like a 30 dollar sight and a bunch of cheap accessories
I love this concept. You dont need your thousand dollar bows to start off. I started with and still have a Mathews Switch, 29" draw, 60lb, 350 spine and I shoot a 285 on an avrg Vegas 3 spot. Shooting up to 50 yards in the backyard, I normally shoot 30-50 yards. 2" black printed dot with some painters tape holds it on the target and Ill do 3" groups all day long when the wind isnt howling. Iv had it for around 6 months, learning new things here n there to help amp up my game. My father was big into archery when I was little. He got out of it sadly, but is now getting back into it because I fell in love with it. Soon I plan to upgrade to a vxr 28 from this little Switch and give it to my brother to let him far around with. Hes not huge into archery so thatll fit him just well.
Brilliant video, many thanks. I've just purchased a Matthews Apex 7 from my local second hand shop.I live in the UK so the sport isn't quite as prolific here due to not as much bow hunting happening here ( not that I know of anyway) so it was a lucky find. The bow has a riser, peep site and D loop on it but I don't have a sight, arrows, stabilizer or release yet, so as you can imagine I'm chomping at the bit to shoot some arrows now. Thanks to your video I now know how to set the bow up when I purchase my new bits.
On the serving material front, I wanted olive drab green to match my VXR, but couldn't find any in that shade of green. So, being a fisherman anyway, I picked up a couple of cheap spools braided low-vis green fishing line, one is 80 lb., and the other is 65 lb. It is the Berkley X5 line and is $17 each for a 164 yard spool. And the diameters are right there at what you would want for serving material thickness at .015" for the 65 lb., and .016" for the 80 lb. It works great for peep tie in and stuff like that. You could go lower on the pound test for thinner line and use it for tied in nock points as well.
That's almost identical to the setup I got my wife two years ago. She had never shot a bow before so she practiced almost every day and was able to shoot her first deer that fall!
Entertaining and informative. Lots of useful information about building a budget bow, and how I might need to fix stuff in the field if I had no pro shop access. I liked how you illustrate the difference between a budget bow and a higher end bow - you do get what you pay for. Great vid!
I got the Mathews V3 31 and my daughter is going hunting this year. It is her first year. I order a Mission Hammr she picked purple and black design. My shop only have that in black. It will be in mid June we are getting the pro accessories with it for like 90 plus dollars.
We know how amazing a shot you are so seeing this and how wide a group with budget equipment, we learn that good equipment can in fact make a good archer better.
Thank you Chris!!! We asked and you answered! I love it when you make the content that we ask for. I feel like that is one of the most important qualities in a content creator. Keep it up man!!!
Thanks for posting this! Great for someone just getting into archery and not ready to spend a fortune; also seems like a great way to build a bow for your kiddo.
End of the day can be a good start to get going. Add quality accessories throughout the year. Enjoy the bow, upgrade down the road and move the accessories over.
our local shop has that bow with similar accessories for 389. add 35 for half dozen arrows and 30 for a release. almost same price. plus they do all the setup and tuneups and adjustments as long as you own the bow included in that price. Never hurts to stop in and see what your local shop has.
I currently run that exact sight and a whisker biscuit on an Alphamax that’s like 12 years old. No stabilizer. Shoots plenty of deer and a few bears. Shoots great. Sure it’s not as smooth or consistent as a new rig but to hunt with its more than capable.
Chris you will always BEE my favorite UA-cam you have taught me so much on how to set up bows, which is why your bow builds are my favorite by you, you also got me in getting a Mathews V3 27!
@@jordantremblay136 the V3 27 is by far the best short axle to axle bow ever! It’s a very quiet bow, it’s also a really stable bow even without stabilizers, it’s also pretty forgiving while it’s very short I have had some of the tightest groups with it and a couple of split arrows. This bow compared to the 31 is not very different I would say, the draw cycle is pretty smooth especially for it’s size. I’ve shot some long range with it and it performs great, if you want the bow to more consistent you could take the grip off which I have done and now the bow is even better. The bow also doesn’t just drop into the back wall when the let off kicks in like others, it feels very nice getting in to the back wall and is very solid and since it’s on the short side due to the string angle you got some more FPS. Once you start getting really comfortable with the bow you will always wanna stick with it, this bow literally puts a smile on my face. If your looking for a short bow that performs like a long bow look no further. If you have any other questions please ask me!
I wanna say something here! Thanks for this great video! I'm definitely going to do some adjustments on mine after this. Also I now feel much more confident with my budget bow, and now I know that it is fine for sure. Awesome channel! Thanks!
My first bow was an Amazon order very similar to this and i ran out of adjustment. The bracket arm that holds the sight housing to the bow is angled down. Flip it upside down and it will hold the sight higher then you will get some adjustment space back. I can tell you got a little burned out on this video in the end. Forget about this holdover crap, get the bow dialed in and prove the concept. Great fun video i totally get why this would burn you out once you have the micro adjust you cant go back.
I recently got my first bow back out (Diamond Edge SB-1), had it restrung and prepped as a back up bow. Hamskea rest, Trophy Ridge Alpha slide (basic one), and a simple CBE 10" stab, and it has been a blast to shoot. It actually has been a great learning experience also because I have gotten somewhat use to the forgiveness that I get out of my higher end bow and setup. With the Diamond, I have to really focus on my technique and consistency much more, which has only made me a better shooter with my upgraded setup. Great video and would like to see more videos, maybe a series, starting with this bow and showing a progression through beginner, mid-tier, and finally high end setups. Like some others have suggested, upgrade all the accessories, arrows, and release to higher end (even what you shoot on your Mathews) and see how it shoots. Then take it even further and upgrade the bow to a mid-tier $600-$800 bow. Just from a shooting standpoint, I really have wondered (with similar setups) how much different the levels of bows actually shoot.
I got a TrueFire Patriot release with my first Diamond bow package, and while it's clunky and huge looking, it works very well. I keep it in my tool box for a back-up just in case!
you can use a ratchet strap for a bow press. on single limb bows put a medal dowel in the strap hooks with the hooks going through the opening for the cam. on split limbs put the hook through the cams where it wont stretch the cam out of shape.
Chris, you can get more height out of that trophy ridge sight by removing the sight housing rod, turning the mounting bracket over and reinstall the sight housing. That will give you more adjustment for the shorter yardages.
Pretty nice video on how to gather some inexpensive parts or accessories and build a budget bow set up. I actually have that Trophy Ridge Mist sight on my PSE from 06 that I still use. I am left eye dominate but right handed. I got it because it says that it’s ambidextrous, but I ran of adjustments both vertically and horizontally. I also have shot a whisker biscuit since I got my bow 14 years ago. However recently I decided to try a Black Gold Widow Maker 5 pin in true left hand and a Hamskea Primer drop away. I won’t know if it made a difference until I shoot broadheads through it. Thanks for sharing this for those of us who can’t afford a $1200 V3 or VXR, etc..
Those sights are surprisingly resilient. I fell in the woods poking down a hill and banged that similar sight by trophy ridge off a tree on my way down and it held sight! Didn’t have to touch it! I was super shocked!
Great video. I’ll be sharing this on fb hunting and archery posts. Lots of people asking about budget bows for beginners. This is great info that could help them out
Next vid request, expensive bow with cheap accessories and cheap bow with expensive accessories. Currently have a bear mauler with cheaper accessories and shoot pretty well, but ready to upgrade. Just wanted to see if I should upgrade to a newer lighter bow and keep the accessories or keep the bow and upgrade to better accessories. Love the vids
Love this man. Relatively new subscriber here but 100% I appreciate content like this bc for me you certainly demystified the “setup” process and on a bow that’s very affordable. Thanks again man.
Got that release for my first bow a week or so ago. Biggest issue is the strap to your release either stretches or slips. Also the trigger is suuuuper light with lots of travel which I don't like. A new release will probably be my first upgrade
I'm a noob and just started getting into archery and just wanted to say I really appreciate your videos and how helpful they are. Especially this one showing a budget build. Thanks man and keep up the amazing work!!
I just bought a bear whitetail legend it came basically ready to rock and roll just minor adjustments and its perfect shooting 60yards and hitting a skoal can (if im not tired)
Thanks Bro, That was cool and informative. Okay that said... A string walks into a bar and the Tender says, "Hey, we don't serve strings in here". The string goes outside and takes his one end his head and does a little roughing up and a little punk rock thing to spike his hair if you will, bends himself over ties himself up one time, goes back in the bar and the tender says, "Hey, Arn't you that piece of string that was just in here and the string says, "No, I'm a Frayed Knot". Ha ha ha,
I used to shoot a PSE Mach Flite 4 at 92 lbs with 35% letoff back in the 90’s. I shot XX75 2216’s. It was one of the fastest bows around!! That bow would pull 105 lbs right out of the box!
Many, many years ago. I had a “McPherson GC 2000” I shot it quite well with just the basic “ must haves”. I’m now looking to get back into archery so please, any recommendations will help. Thanks.
I heard a few years ago that this trufire and cabelas releases are made by Scotts. They should be really good. I’ve had the same Scott mongoose I think, for about 20 years and it’s still great. I don’t shoot year round anymore but when I started out I would shoot 8-10 Times a month or so. I’ve never had any issue. Even the Velcro is fine. Scott’s was invented and manufactured one county over from me in Mt. Sterling Ky. Even went turkey hunting with the owner once.
It's good to see videos like this! There are so many different skill levels and budgets out here in YT land. Keep up the good work. Now I'm returning to your helicopter bow hunt video.
I'm doing a budget build with a recurve just brought Ragim Red Lion ILF riser & a 2nd hand Mathews Flatline Stabilizer 8" Black £50.00 a bargin next and then Shibuya Ultima Rest already have limbs, and wisper string.
Better off going with a Dragon for the extra 2" on axle to axle measurement, and take the savings towards a better sight with metal mount like a Trophy Ridge or TruGlo. The Dragon comes with BCY strings and Gordon Glass limbs. The Pro shop sells Matthew's Mission bows as the lower cost options, but I found them to be more harsh. With Pro shops closing down around here for some time now, it's over $20 in gas just to go to the local one and back. So a bow that one can tune at home is advantageous in my case. UA-cam helps a lot with gaining experience.
is it worth upgrading the accessories on a budget bow? I bought a Diamond Edge on craigslist with all basic furniture and I'm itching to upgrade the rest and possibly adding stabilizers.
I actually have that same release as a back up. I bought it the same way. I just needed one in a pinch and Wally World had it I think. I prefer it in some cases because from summer to winter you swell a little more or less but that Velcro is really nice (minus the sound) and you can be more consistent with it being snug and secure lol. Funny how just a cheap thing works well.
Hey everybody I'm new to archery and was looking into getting my first setup! I know this video only came out 8 months ago but if you have any suggestions that you might swap out as a better option, or something that came out out recently in the more budget friendly end of this sport please let me know thank you I'm very excited and grateful for people like chris who make's this so easy to learn and enticing!
I never got consistent accuracy with whisker biscuit. It will not hide any flaw in your shooting form. Drop away rest was the biggest improvement to my bow.
This is great! I just found this and looking to get into archery. Looking at the Mission site 3 years later...have you ever shot the MXR for hunting? Great stuff Chris!
Bro I’m 33 years old. I bought my little brothers Mission Menace last year it had a cobra site with one pin set for 20. I cranked it up to max 52lbs and took it out. Missed 3 doe and a small 6 completely and then on Halloween I smashed an 8!!! Love your channel btw
Great video 👍. Im new to archery and shot a donated mission craze for a year. Its a great youth bow and can easily shoot far. I just upgraded to a MXR and I feel every little improvement. Getting good groups on the Craze made shooting the mxr easy. Great vid. Definitely need to try out the paper tune.
So I’m new to archery but I got my bow used and wasn’t satisfied with the sight it came with so I got this same exact sight and I was having issues with the sight being maxed out just like you, I’ve flipped the mount upside down and I have wayyyy more room to adjust, I may be wrong, like I said I’m new BUT it works better if you flip the mount it’s self upside down.

I still use my PSE Deer Hunter from 2005 with some TruGlo stabilizer, sight, and some pretty basic stuff. Feels almost like a vintage bow. I don't think I crossed the 350 USD line. But I can hit a box of safety matches out to 55 yards if the arrows are good quality. Yeah, it is maybe slower than the present days' entry-level bows but as I don't hunt accuracy and smooth draw are the only things that matter to me.
What’s your opinion on the craze!? What do you recommend that’s a little longer? I have a mission craze and it’s a good bow, but the shorter/compact size makes it harder to hold it steady
I'm looking into upgrading my bow to something newer but without braking the bank. I have all the accessories I want and need. What's a good bare bow that I could get for around the $500 mark?
Lol I shoot an old Chill SDX I picked up Iordered and switched the mods out for draw length but would like to know how much I can adjust those bolts on the limb brackets there's a pretty decent gap there.
I mean you could just wait for a good deal on Kijiji to I payed 300 Canadian dollars for -bear cruzer g2 -trophy ridge react h5 bee stinger stabilizer -blackout apostal release -6 fmj arows -8 Easton power flights deepsix broad heads and waited months to get a good post on Kijiji so sometimes it is worth it to wait.
Posted on another one of your videos, but wanted to know you opinion on Which would be a better setup. Cheap bow with expensive accessories or expensive bow with cheap accessories.
Thanks again Chris, another great video. You prove to me that it can be done still, but also proves to me with a little bit more money I can get what I really want without sacrificing quality if I’m patient. May take me longer to build the one I want, but in the end it will last me till I’m done and can’t hunt anymore.
Those ez rest need to have the whisker biscuit tightened. There’s two Allen heads where it attaches that will loosen up and cause it to fall off. Can’t hunt without it. Ask my how I know 😅😂
Gotta love a budget bow build. Probably one of the worst limitations of these budget bows are the quality of the strings which can lead to peep rotation. So I'm pretty surprised you didn't pick a peep with a tube connector
What would be a good release that has little travel when pulling it back before it let's it fly? One that is finger release and has a wrist strap preferably.
Neat video, it's interesting to see what goes in to setting up a new bow with bare bones options. Makes me happy I went with a bear RTH bow for my first bow though.
This is actually a very informative video These budget bows and equipment are really as good or better than what we started out with 35 years ago I had a Pearson with small round cams and hunted with it for 2 years before I started 3D shooting and upgraded to a PSE The Pearson was actually more forgiving I could almost Robin Hood one but the upgrade was better quality faster So it’s up to you however much you can afford and shoot comfortably
Hey Mr. Bee! I just watched your budget bow build. I dream of having an awesome bow. I currently have a Bear Cruzer G2 I bought from ebay. I replaced the rest with a QAD Ultrarest Hunter addition. It came with a Trophy Ridge 7 pin fix sight. I wanted to thank you so so much for the info & knowledge I have learned from watching your videos. I have fell completely in love with archery. I would LOVE to have one of the awesome setups you have. I shoot decently with the cruzer but I just know I would treasure an awesome bow. My dream bow would be a Matthew's or a PSE dual cam bow. Anyway, much love man. What bow would you suggest?
For just under 450 new zealand dollars (220usd) I set up a bowtech destroyer 350 in mint condition a g5 rock 5 pin sight, elite stokerised stabilizer, rip cord code red rest and a 3 arrow tightspot. By far the best build I've put together for under a grand (bow and accessories are way more here than the states)
You should do a video with that bow but put all your expensive accessories on it and see how it shoots.
The same...

our local shop has that bow with similar accessories for 389. add 35 for half dozen arrows and 30 for a release. almost same price. plus they do all the setup and tuneups and adjustments as long as you own the bow included in that price.
I’m thinking of getting a V3 27, what are your thoughts on it after getting yours?
Do you think you would get better results with a better release?
If you were to keep this bow, what items would you replace and in which order? would you replace the whisper biscuit or the sight first?
Those sights are surprisingly resilient. I fell in the woods poking down a hill and banged that similar sight by trophy ridge off a tree on my way down and it held sight! Didn’t have to touch it! I was super shocked!
It's so great that you have done a video for all of us little
people..
Never apologies. Thank you for sharing! Loved every minute 🤙
Love this man. Relatively new subscriber here but 100% I appreciate content like this bc for me you certainly demystified the “setup” process and on a bow that’s very affordable. Thanks again man.
Sick!! Been talking to the wife about wanting to get into bow hunting... maybe get a couple of more mid range parts just for adjustment purposes?
That bow would pull 105 lbs right out of the box!
just bought my first bow and this video was fantastic man. super helpful and got me even more stoked thanks man!
Id like to see budget bow with top of the line accessories.
39:05 I’m laughing at how the frame rate of the camera makes your arrows move slow like noodles. 😂 I love it
It's good to see videos like this!
Thanks for the video, could the problem be with the cheap bow or the cheap parts?
Better off going with a Dragon for the extra 2" on axle to axle measurement, and take the savings towards a better sight with metal mount like a Trophy Ridge or TruGlo. The Dragon comes with BCY strings and Gordon Glass limbs. The Pro shop sells Matthew's Mission bows as the lower cost options, but I found them to be more harsh.
With Pro shops closing down around here for some time now, it's over $20 in gas just to go to the local one and back. So a bow that one can tune at home is advantageous in my case. UA-cam helps a lot with gaining experience.
Watching bow builds is SUPER satisfying
is it worth upgrading the accessories on a budget bow? I bought a Diamond Edge on craigslist with all basic furniture and I'm itching to upgrade the rest and possibly adding stabilizers.
I actually have that same release as a back up. I bought it the same way. I just needed one in a pinch and Wally World had it I think. I prefer it in some cases because from summer to winter you swell a little more or less but that Velcro is really nice (minus the sound) and you can be more consistent with it being snug and secure lol. Funny how just a cheap thing works well.
Let’s gooooo. Going to share this with all my friends! Keep up the hard work Chris!!
Love the ending!
We need a hunting video with it!!!!!
Will your custom grip fit this bow? My son shoots this setup but has a ton of grip issues with it. Thank you.
@ChrisBeeReal
I'm looking into upgrading my bow to something newer but without braking the bank. I have all the accessories I want and need. What's a good bare bow that I could get for around the $500 mark?
Some of those sight brackets will flip over for more adjustment in one direction
Lol I shoot an old Chill SDX I picked up Iordered and switched the mods out for draw length but would like to know how much I can adjust those bolts on the limb brackets there's a pretty decent gap there.
Yes Chris bee the best UA-cam out there who is with me.
I mean you could just wait for a good deal on Kijiji to I payed 300 Canadian dollars for
-bear cruzer g2
-trophy ridge react h5
bee stinger stabilizer
-blackout apostal release
-6 fmj arows
-8 Easton power flights
deepsix broad heads
and waited months to get a good post on Kijiji so sometimes it is worth it to wait.
Posted on another one of your videos, but wanted to know you opinion on Which would be a better setup. Cheap bow with expensive accessories or expensive bow with cheap accessories.
What diameter serving material/ string do you use for this? To tie in the peep and all?
Thanks again Chris, another great video. You prove to me that it can be done still, but also proves to me with a little bit more money I can get what I really want without sacrificing quality if I’m patient. May take me longer to build the one I want, but in the end it will last me till I’m done and can’t hunt anymore.
Those ez rest need to have the whisker biscuit tightened. There’s two Allen heads where it attaches that will loosen up and cause it to fall off. Can’t hunt without it. Ask my how I know 😅😂
This is what me and all my poor friends who weren't in 4H archery would do growing up
Gotta love a budget bow build.
Probably one of the worst limitations of these budget bows are the quality of the strings which can lead to peep rotation. So I'm pretty surprised you didn't pick a peep with a tube connector
Would u recommend wrist release or tumb or is that just self pref? ☺️
I have been purchasing Archery Equipment for 40 yrs... You hope, you get what you pay for... Meaning, high priced equipment is high quality!!
What would be a good release that has little travel when pulling it back before it let's it fly? One that is finger release and has a wrist strap preferably.
Anything $25-$50 will typically have an adjustment screw for travel length...
@@thistledewoutdoors3331 I switched to the scott ghost. I am liking it a lot more than the other one that is now a backup.
It would be fun to see what improvements various upgrades to components would do. (Sight, rest, release ect.)
Neat video, it's interesting to see what goes in to setting up a new bow with bare bones options. Makes me happy I went with a bear RTH bow for my first bow though.
Hey when u were shooting u could here when u pull back might be a little off too because sounded like the field tips were loose
