- Chittaprosad was an artist from West Bengal, who was basically self-taught. During the 1930s he was involved in the nationalist movement, but later on during 1942-1948, he became an ardent supporter of the communist movement and became a whole-time member of the Communist Party of India. The body of work he’s best known for, are his famine drawings of 1942 and 1943, where the intensity of black and white ink drawings is breathtaking. He journeyed towards the creation of the Ramayana for children in the late ‘60s. This was his labour of love, a monumental effort to create a version of the epic using Linocuts. Unfortunately, the task remained unfinished.
