    I actually met a guy using one of those 1/8th inch foam pads on the AT. He swore it was comfortable. Base weight is nothing but a backpacking version of a dick measuring contest and a worthless statistic. "My base weight is 9.5lbs and I'm packing out 12 avocados and 5L of water...."

    • @RC-qf3mp
      @RC-qf3mp Рік тому +2

      The way it’s comfortable is with camp selection. It’s obviously uncomfortable using that in a shelter, but if you’re stealth camping, you find a soft spot of land and get leaves under it for more cushion and warmth (so you save pack weight not needing as heavy a quilt). Ray Jardine discusses this. And back sleepers have an easier time with harder surfaces.

Never hurts to carry an extra couple of ounces, especially when a versatile tool like that could save your life should something not go according to plan. • @ckb1137
      @ckb1137 Рік тому +2

      @@somerandomguy706 Sure :)
      I do keiryu fishing which is like the bait fishing version of tenkara. If you're looking for a lightweight fishing set up it's almost impossible to beat unless you're handlining. My rod is the diawa kiyose 43m. It's an adjustable length rod which is nice for hiking since you don't necessarily know what the conditions will be like when you get there. It's also pretty robust so if I happen to hook into a 20 inch trout it should be fine as long as I'm careful. It's 14 feet long at max extension which is actually on the shorter end of keiryu but that helps to keep the weight down, if you were doing shorter trips a longer rod might be worthwhile to you. Or if you're more of a fly fisherman I recommend tenkara, the rods are even smaller and lighter but the line is obviously much heavier, plus you would need to know the location you'll be fishing at has enough room to cast but this is probably not too much of a concern.
      I usually bring two separate keiryu lines and a bit of extra tippet. As far as gear I keep it pretty simple, I bring a few artificial worms, flies and splitshot. Occasionally I might bring some powerbait and/or marshmallows if I have reason to think that would do well. You can also just dig for worms once you get there.
      Keiryu is not exactly high tech fishing, it's basically rod+line+hook+bait. There's no casting and you shouldn't expect to be fishing miles out away from shore, your reach is basically the length of the rod and nothing more. But despite this I've always done surprisingly well.
      If you're interested check out tenkarabums website.

    • @somerandomguy706
      @somerandomguy706 Рік тому

      @@ckb1137 appreciate the response. Sounds like a good setup. I do have a tenkara rod, but much prefer the fly rod at least based on the fishing I've done around GA with the tenkara rod. The only area I see myself using it is at rest stops where I can deploy it quickly when otherwise I just wouldn't fish a spot or to simply bring as an UL backup on my bigger trips (like I'm planning to do when I go for an 8 day trip in Wyoming this summer). I'm guessing I'll be carrying close to 3 lbs of fishing gear on that trip between the net, 3 fly boxes (4 oz/box), 4 wt rod, tenkara rod, reel, nippers, tippet, oil to fry some fish, etc. Nice to know there's other ways to do it. I'll have to experiment with the UL way on a lesser trip.

    • @ckb1137
      @ckb1137 Рік тому

      @@somerandomguy706 Yeah it's always a tradeoff between weight and usability (and fun). But if you're looking for a shakedown of sorts I'll bet you can make do just fine without a fishing net, I always have, and you can definitely minimize the number of flies you carry, try to get it down to one box of just your favorites (or those you expect will do better). If you're going to bring a fly rod I'd leave the tenkara at home, for simplicity sake if not necessarily weight. Oil is great to carry as an ultralight source of calories just try not to waste too much when frying fish (and don't do it near where you're camping). For reference when I'm backpacking I literally boil my fish in water, it's better than you think especially when you're hungry after hiking a few dozen miles.
      Another thing to consider is the less weight you carry the more energy you'll have to actually fish when you get there. plenty of people go out hiking with grand plans of fishing all the mountain streams and lakes but once you get out there and start doing miles you'll probably find you don't have the energy for a whole lot beyond that. You've got to make it as easy on yourself and your body as possible. Just something I've learned over the years.

    What is ultralight nowadays? My base weight is under 10lbs, is that ultralight now? It was before. But holy cow, it's a whole different animal now. The purpose of ultralight was to maximize your smiles per mile because you weren't hauling around a bunch of crap you didn't need to. Go hiking because it's fun. Try to have the most fun possible, which means being as comfortable as possible. If that means you want to be as comfortable as possible in camp, cool! Do less miles and bring a gas grill and some chairs and beer in a glass bottle and some lobsters. I'm jealous af. If you want to hike every daylight hour and do as many miles as possible and challenge yourself physically, cool! Cut off that toothbrush and cold soak or whatever, get down to as light as you can get so those miles are actually comfortable and easy! Most people are somewhere in the middle like me. I have less time than I'd like to hike, so I try to maximize the area I cover with each trip and see as much as I possibly can out there and have wonderful experiences. So I have UL core gear, subsist on less food than I'd like, (because it's a short term activity) and know where my next water source is so I don't have to schlepp a gallon of water when I'm going to cross a stream in less than 4mi anyway. I do about 20mi a day on the east coast, more on the west where trails are not PuDs. 8-10lbs base, no more than 25lbs including food for 5 days and water. If you have a good time with less, awesome! If you have a good time with more, awesome! Have a great time hiking and enjoy what you're doing because this is a life-affirming hobby.

      Your bank account must be a little ultralighter. I just bought a camp chair yesterday, but I have a camper conversion van, so not for hiking. Wow those chairs are pricey but good for you.

    Wasn't there a Mel Brookes movie where Moses drops one of the tablets thus leaving only TEN COMMANDMENTS? I feel like something like that happened here. What are the other FIVE commandments?!!

    Real ultralight is basically a native, walking barefoot, wearing a thong made of tree leaves or better nothing. With some water in a bladder and beef jerky.

    My grandfather free climbed Pointe du Hoc at Normandy with over 70 pounds of gear on his back. Most of it explosives. And guns. And ammunition. And then he went and finished the mission. So, yea, ultralight is Busch league. When did people become so scared of a little weight?
