I didn't dig it much either. On the original, either Steve Hunter or Dick Wagner played that soaring, sublime, heartbreaking guitar solo, and it almost brings tears to my eyes every time, in the context of this song.
Man was Peter ever that young? That is crazy stuff to remember - his voice has gotten better if that is even possible. Amazing talent all the way around.
+spops dado Doesn't the scratch in his voice "get you" though? This is a guy and a song that have been together, well, at least 24 years...and even more, today. I expect we'll read about his death soon, and we'll be told of another serious medical problem he hid...
Absolutely superb. I love both versions but the 2002 versions has even more depth,. I’m 50 now and PG has been my favourite artist since my 20s. Seen hi several times, and for me he is truly one of the greats. Would just love one more great album please Peter!
This post is , maybe, the best mirror to this song. The young - colours,, brute diamond voice, a genius band, The old - piano and the Voice! Thanks for sharing!
Way better voice in his 50s than when he was young, just much more emotional and somehow 'wiser'... I mean he always had an amazing voice ,even when he was 20 singing for Genesis ,but then his voice gained that scratchy, dirty quality...
La maturità, l'esperienza e il tempo che passa, spesso terrore della nostra società, sono ciò che può rendere un diamante grezzo una gemma perfetta. La versione live del 2002 è un capolavoro.
You all should check out , or hear again, the version of this tune he did on Robert Fripp's Exposure--in one listener's estimation, the definitive version.
+Rick Popovich - Thank you. That's the version I'm looking for. Actually, this is how I first saw it performed. 1977 (I think) Roxy, Los Angeles, with Robert Fripp in the shadows. Dusty Rhodes.
I love Fripp's "speed" guitar that weaves in and out in that version. Similar to what he did on the Rochester debut album that Fripp produced. Bobby is a man of many talents.
From what I can recall reading, you're correct. I think Peter's first child had some sort of complications when he/she was born, and because of that Peter took lots of time off from the band. That, and the fact that the music press acted as if Genesis was Peter's backing band, led to tensions between Peter and the rest of the band. I also read that Peter quit once before when some movie producer tapped him to write a script, but that fell through, and he ended up coming back to the band.
Oh, yes. Saw him 4 times in concert. Fantastic ability to, always, nail new variations of his songs. His stage dive, on Lay your hands on me. Is probably, my number one live concert memory.
+Bee Kay '77 Roxy Los Angeles with Robert Fripp. Maybe '78. '12 with So tour San Jose. He's touring summer '16 with Sting. Missed him by a year with Genesis. He's a great performer.
I was blessed to see he and Sting in June in Ohio in the Paper, Rock, Scissors tour. I remember in the middle of the concert at one point that I just closed my eyes and all was finally right with the world -- no really. It struck me so deeply. He still tours just a little. I travelled 2 days to do it and it was worth every bit. Keep an eye out on PeterGabriel.com and get emails. Fun bits come through.
Bee Kay I saw him twice. The first time was around the 'Plays Live' album and the second time when he released the Security album. Both shows were remarkable. That first show, he was playing the same night as Bowie, and I had to choose. I chose well.
Peter Gabriel is a hero to me, both musically and as a humanitarian and citizen of the world. I cannot even imagine how it must be to have seen him at the peak of his career, as you did. Security is his finest work, in my opinion, so deep and dark. To have seen him at the time you did would have been wonderful beyond description. Also a huge fan of Tony Levin and Larry Fast (Synergy). Thanks, Irish guy! Peace! (And sorry about trump)
"it will be those who gave their island to survive... there is no point in direction we cannot even choose a side. Dont be afraid to cry at you see." If this is not the whole world slipping under your feet !
I have seen him live lately... powerful... and decided. I have a hard time deciding which is my foorite song... when I die, it will be one of his that plays an epithet.
When the night shows the signals grow on radios All the strange things they come and go, as early warnings Stranded starfish have no place to hide still waiting for the swollen Easter tide There's no point in direction we cannot even choose a side. I took the old track the hollow shoulder, across the waters On the tall cliffs they were getting older, sons and daughters The jaded underworld was riding high Waves of steel hurled metal at the sky and as the nail sunk in the cloud, the rain was warm and soaked the crowd. Lord, here comes the flood We'll say goodbye to flesh and blood If again the seas are silent in any still alive It'll be those who gave their island to survive Drink up, dreamers, you're running dry. When the flood calls You have no home, you have no walls In the thunder crash You're a thousand minds, within a flash Don't be afraid to cry at what you see The actors gone, there's only you and me And if we break before the dawn, they'll use up what we used to be. Lord, here comes the flood We'll say goodbye to flesh and blood If again the seas are silent in any still alive It'll be those who gave their island to survive Drink up, dreamers, you're running dry.
@parisbrat. That "carrot top comedian" has awards for his work, and I think his version has as much feeling as this one. As an artist myself, I'd like to covert his song, but only if I can bring something to it or give it the justice it deserves.
Why is he singing - on the second one - into 2 mikes at the same time? Both his headset microphone and the one on a stand? Bet that the sound engineer must have been on his toes all the way through....
This is the single most beautiful song I have ever heard.
peter has gotten better with age, voice has become mellower and much fuller, and the emotion with which he sings now makes the songs even better!!!
Bellissima canzone con bellissime parole...
Sorprendente!!!... Las dos versiones de "Here Comes The flood". En dos grandes épocas de su gran carrera.
His voice just grows more powerful the older he gets. "Don't be afraid to cry at what you see".
One of my all time favourites of his. I can't believe how badly the saxophone destroyed this amazing old footage of this song. Bummer.
Sax solos were VERY popular in the 70s.
Aryno Wyrth Well of course they were, but that's not the point. ;)
Rustbukkit69 I know… I probably should have put a sad face after that. :(
I didn't dig it much either. On the original, either Steve Hunter or Dick Wagner played that soaring, sublime, heartbreaking guitar solo, and it almost brings tears to my eyes every time, in the context of this song.
I agree with you..saxophone was not necessary in this beatiful song...Alea jacta est.
Man was Peter ever that young? That is crazy stuff to remember - his voice has gotten better if that is even possible. Amazing talent all the way around.
weird. I've got so used to his voice that I forgot he was young once. Still a quality performer old or young
+spops dado Doesn't the scratch in his voice "get you" though? This is a guy and a song that have been together, well, at least 24 years...and even more, today. I expect we'll read about his death soon, and we'll be told of another serious medical problem he hid...
+spops dado - I needed this version. How I saw it first performed in '77 with Fripp at the Roxy in LA. And how I'm grieving Bowie's passing, loss?.
Absolutely superb. I love both versions but the 2002 versions has even more depth,. I’m 50 now and PG has been my favourite artist since my 20s. Seen hi several times, and for me he is truly one of the greats. Would just love one more great album please Peter!

+Gian Marco Giacomini but his musicianship was awesome, even as a youngster.
+Gian Marco Giacomini - You're daft.
La maturità, l'esperienza e il tempo che passa, spesso terrore della nostra società, sono ciò che può rendere un diamante grezzo una gemma perfetta. La versione live del 2002 è un capolavoro.
Why has there been so few responses to this post.? Gabriel was Genisis and so far ahead of the times. Classic!
Beautiful song. Love this jam

Hay St Peter you're making me tear up it's alright the tears are flowing now! Here comes the flood!
i saw this video for over 30 jears live on tv in the GDR. i never forgott it. PG, you and the old Genesis you are the greatest for ever. Axel
Oh, yes. Saw him 4 times in concert. Fantastic ability to, always, nail new variations of his songs. His stage dive, on Lay your hands on me. Is probably, my number one live concert memory.
Younger Peter had a better voice, but the older Peter also has a better voice.
I am crying! I love this!
grandissimo suono e voce da brivido. Vic.
One of the greatest regrets of my life is never having seen him in concert.
+fabia brown When did you see him?

Anyone who doesn't like this song is only admitting they have no soul.
"it will be those who gave their island to survive... there is no point in direction we cannot even choose a side. Dont be afraid to cry at you see." If this is not the whole world slipping under your feet !

Epitaph
Look how CUTE he is....Not to mention a FANTASTIC POET!
Pretty much the greatest song ever written. Love this version - also love the version with Fripp and Frippertronics.
A goal of my Life is to get this man together with Micke, Tony, Steve and Phil.
Takes my breath away every time I hear it
full-heart young time and the solitude that comes as a last life in the univers...
When the night shows
the signals grow on radios
All the strange things
they come and go, as early warnings
Stranded starfish have no place to hide
still waiting for the swollen Easter tide
There's no point in direction we cannot
even choose a side.
I took the old track
the hollow shoulder, across the waters
On the tall cliffs
they were getting older, sons and daughters
The jaded underworld was riding high
Waves of steel hurled metal at the sky
and as the nail sunk in the cloud, the rain
was warm and soaked the crowd.
Lord, here comes the flood
We'll say goodbye to flesh and blood
If again the seas are silent
in any still alive
It'll be those who gave their island to survive
Drink up, dreamers, you're running dry.
When the flood calls
You have no home, you have no walls
In the thunder crash
You're a thousand minds, within a flash
Don't be afraid to cry at what you see
The actors gone, there's only you and me
And if we break before the dawn, they'll
use up what we used to be.
Lord, here comes the flood
We'll say goodbye to flesh and blood
If again the seas are silent
in any still alive
It'll be those who gave their island to survive
Drink up, dreamers, you're running dry.
Love his voice. It's so recognisable
Amazing creativity!!!
AWESOME VIDEO OF PETER!!! A THUMBS UP AND FAVED :)
Grande Pet Ayer, Hoy y siempre
Gold! Oro puro!
LOOOOOOOVE U, BABE!
Grandíssimo Peter,Alma mater
I cry every time I see this
que buena rola, súbele!!!
*Amnesty. Sorry! Habits. But I LOVE Biko. Such a brilliant song. San Jacinto is another of my favourites.
thank you man! brilliant post ! :)
Sorry, but the Growing Up Tour in Milan was made in 2003... I was to see him a few days before in Bologna, the 6th of May 2003... :-)
@parisbrat. That "carrot top comedian" has awards for his work, and I think his version has as much feeling as this one. As an artist myself, I'd like to covert his song, but only if I can bring something to it or give it the justice it deserves.
The Great Artist
Imagination in action!
Here He comes.
Look for Erlend Bratland singing this song, gives a complete new meaning to this song.
mio grande grande amore.
As far as Genesis is concerned, he left at the perfect time as well.
Going to see him and Levin for the 2012 tour in Philly pa. the So tour!
I would like to go but I can't go to Levin nowadays XD. it would be perfect if he come to spain OOOOO YESS
calm down dude ... it's just a comment. Don't sweat the small stuff ... peace man!
Pelle d’oca...
Why does this sound like an post-Brexit song?
great, aside from the Carrot Top saxophone solo. One of Gabriel's most powerful songs.
Lucky radio.
He looks a little like his guitarist Richard Evans in the Growing Up Live tour
Aw, hell..much better looking than the SCARIEST LOOKING COMEDIAN on our (not his) planet- Carrot Top!
I DIDN'T KNOW KENNY G WAS WORKING WITH PETER back then...
Since gabriel had gotten old already, the voice is no longer singing like he was a young man. I wonder he will be on the concert or quit already?
Let's see.
hey wasn't that blue Lou Marino on the sax?
add this to the list of amazing songs destroyed by saxophone lol
Dirty Numb Angel Boy your crazy lmao
You are SO wrong!
@@sloblock292 i honestly don't remember writing this I feel really stoopid now cause the saxaphone freaking slaps
@@sloblock292 maybe I was drunk and was trying to say destroyed as in "he killed it" with the sax
You are forgiven, - in a rock context it’s a surprisingly complex sax solo, either way.
Thanks Fripp...oh wait
Is that a puffy shirt?
What is Biko spirit?
i think his top was with genesis
I don't think his leaving Genesis had anything to do with the punk "movement."
i thought it was due to the birth of his child?
Why is he singing - on the second one - into 2 mikes at the same time? Both his headset microphone and the one on a stand? Bet that the sound engineer must have been on his toes all the way through....
...naaaaaaaaa...............
They all lost! Darned Pete and Genesis!
how he can write this only 27 y.o.
And he wrote the lyrics to Supper's Ready & The Lamb... when he was Only 22 & 25 y.o. He's always been an 'old soul' of a musical genius.
No..
