Claire's 1st driving lesson - 1 Getting moving

  • This driving lesson video (www.learnerdri...) from LDC - Learner Driving Centre shows the first practical driving lesson of Claire.
    Claire has two sisters who found learning to drive a nightmare with other driving schools. Emma, Claire's twin sister, particularly had a bad experience and after buying many driving lessons from another driving school she was told that she needed to learn in an automatic because she had no co-ordination. This of cause was nonsense and after contacting LDC we helped her to pass the test in a manual car despite the damage that had been done to her self confidence. This is why we were so interested in training Claire, her twin, to show it need not be so difficult. Because of this Bob realises Claire may believe it is going to be really difficult for her to learn to drive because of what happened to her twin sister Emma.
    The provisional plan for today's lesson was to cover the Getting Moving lesson from the LDC driving skills programme. Before this lesson Claire decides to do some preparation for the lesson using the LDC driving skills Workbook but not the DVD as she has no PC/DVD player at home. Bob gave her the link to the videos on UA-cam so she could watch them before the next lesson on her phone! Claire has also started to do her Theory Test preparation using a non-LDC phone App. Claire didn't realise LDC do Theory Test software (i.e. Apps) for phones as well as for PCs. Indeed LDC is the only software product where you can pass results between the PC and a mobile device.
    Too many driving instructors focus too much attention on telling their pupils what to do, what to think and criticizing ever little fault they make! This approach only fosters dependency, doubt and blind obedience, such that once the test is passed they do all the things they were told not to do. The LDC approach is designed to foster self-reliance, confidence and responsibility resulting in safer drivers who learn to drive far more quickly.
    Unlike traditional instruction LDC heavily promotes student centred learning rather than the instructor centred fault orientated learning approach offered by most other driving schools. This involves the student being encouraged to take more responsibility for their own development by using the LD System materials before and after each lesson and by using discovery learning with self determination and reflection; rather than being continually criticized and told what to do by the instructor. In particular talk through instruction, prompted practice and long winded explanations are avoided, if at all possible - instead encouraging the student to work it out for themselves. If you want to see this approach in practice view Bobby-Jo's, Claire's or Nikki's lessons with Bob.
    This series of videos shows Bob using the new features which will be incorporated into LDCs new workbook for 2014 as he helps Nikki and Claire learn to drive. These new features are contained in the A4 ring bound reflective lesson diary which Nikki and Claire are completing between lessons. The idea behind the LD System is that you watch the video, do a quiz in the workbook and then put the lesson into practice. The workbook also contains a set of activities and targets for each practical lesson along with a reflective diary to help you consolidate your learning, explore your progress and plan what you want to do next.

      Hey man, thanks for these videos. I'm learning to drive, I feel like I'm getting there but unsure at times of what I should do. I just found this video tonight and already you've given me so many great tips. Walking behind the car so other motorists can see you, checking that your headrest is right oh and that idea of putting to neutral as your point of reference, that's great! Sometimes I struggle with the gears and get a bit panicked when it won't go in. This is going to be very helpful. Cheers mate.

    I love this instructor, he's much like mine. Thorough, Patient and reassuring. Anyone saying she's dopey or thick when she's clearly nervous and a new driver(I take it you didn't bother reading the description?)is guaranteed to be one of those typical idiots who think they own the road and know it all, frequently drive too fast, overtaking to save 3 seconds not correctly using their clutch and revving round corners. No one is impressed by the way.... The type all proper, sensible drivers hate. Well done Claire and thank you Bob for this

    Advice for learners...RESEARCH driving instructors before booking.
    Get reviews BEFORE booking.
    A bad tempered or aggressive instructor is worse than useless.
    This guy is brilliant.

    • @clientcentredlearning
      @clientcentredlearning 5 років тому +9

      Thank you, that's very kind of you to say. You are absolutely right about research though, ask some questions about the important stuff. Will they shout, use bad language or behaviour, what are the rules of engagement. ask to see a copy of any terms and conditions and ask questions about stuff you are unsure of.
      My terms and conditions state the following:
      I will be courteous, polite, tidy and punctual. I will behave in a professional and ethical manner at all times. My training car will be well maintained, clean and tidy (weather permitting). My car is fitted with dual-controls and is fully insured for driving tuition purposes. I will not smoke in the training car at anytime, nor will I use your lesson time for any other form of business, personal or otherwise without your expressed permission.
      They also state:
      In an emergency situation it is important you follow my instructions and allow me to take control of the steering wheel if necessary to avoid an incident. I may also need to make use of the dual controls (i.e. brake and or clutch pedals) and thus override your use of them. As soon as it is safe to do so I will advise you of why my actions were necessary and help you to calm down if required. Any subsequent discussion will focus on what can be learnt rather than who was to blame.
      I will do my best to deliver any instructions or take any actions (even in an emergency) in a calm and measured manner so as not to alarm you or make you feel uncomfortable or disheartened in any way. I will definitely not shout at you or make any sarcastic or derogatory remarks.
      You can be assured I will not use improper language or suggestive behaviour and/or physical contact.
      You should look for similar, or ask questions to determine you will receive the same or similar.
      Hope that helps

      Your students are lucky to have you....and I am lucky to have found my lovely new instructor.
      I researched ''Best driving instructors{my city} and got a very good one that I am happy with.
      The aggressive one was just ghastly, and a confidence sapper.
      He also got involved {started} a road rage incident while he himself was driving me to a quiet spot on first lesson...I thought it would come to blows.
      He also said it didn't matter exceeding the speed limit {say 25 in a 20 zone} if other drivers were ''behind'' as there aren't police around due to funding cuts {!}..
      My new instructor is strict about keeping to limits, as there are there for safety.
      Good Driving Instructors seem to be as rare as hen's teeth, and the good ones all have waiting lists...my advice to new students is wait to get on their list.
      and if your current instructor makes you feel unhappy, change instructors...do not keep paying for substandard or bad tempered tuition.

    I'm a driving instructor trainer in Norwich and love your natural ability to coach your pupils, hardly ever telling them what to do. I was like Claire for a lot of lessons, it took me just over a year to pass due to me having no confidence at all. I always thought im never going to do it and I'll never pass but I did! I passed just over 2 weeks ago :) I also struggled with driving and setting the gas, finding the bite etc because I have a joint disorder which really affects my knees, back, wrists... Well, everything! But my knees are the worst. Now im getting used to my own car, hated it at first because I thought I couldn't control it but I'm slowly getting used to it and realising what my car can and can't do now. Slowly gaining confidence too :) I never thought I'd pass and its instructors like Bob that are a credit to society. My female instructor was exactly like Bob and we got on brilliantly. Couldn't have done it without her. Nice work x

    My first driving lessons went like :
    - learning how to steel
    - drive on rural streets for 20 minutes incl. gears, steeling, (backwards) parking, stopping, driving 60mph etc
    - drive into a city, passing two schools when school was out and all the kids were running on the street
    - drive through the city for about 40 minutes with high traffic
    I never sat behind the drivers seat before this lesson, so I was quiet overwhelmed by this situation. I still dont know when to change gears or how to stop at a traffic light and I didn't had the chance to take care of passengers because I was too busy figuring out how to actually drive the car.
    In the end I broke the car a little because I wasn't able to change gears in a roundabout and bombed into the curbstone. I wish I had an instructor like Bob.

    • @HazardNP
      @HazardNP 8 років тому +6

      I've noticed i progress ridiculously quick compared to most youtube videos, going for my 6th lesson (probably only about 4th hour of driving due to going to quiet conditions as a passenger etc) and i'm doing dual carriageways, three point turns and medium roundabouts.. But doing that on your first lesson is crazy.. The instructor should definetely set goals with you so you know what to expect and can prepare for at home. If he sprung it on me i definetely would of been panicky, but ive done hours of research etc so confidence is high and key!

Videos like this one are an absolute godsend to learner drivers and they should be fully taken advantage of. +twitter: Harrystileshq Thank you for your kind words. When the time comes to choose an instructor, do some serious research. Ask friends for recommendations, but don't just take it on face value, ask them why they recommend them so you can be sure you find someone who can meet your needs. You are about to spend a lot of money. People will happily just pick an instructor from an advert and spend a ton of money (perhaps over £1000) without researching properly. Yet they will research for days or even weeks before buying a £300 tablet or ipad.
      thousands of people every year sign up with an instructor who doesn't identify and meet their needs and then put up with poor service because the money is already paid up front. Nothing wrong with paying up front as it gains you a discount, but be sure you will receive what you want and need (you are the customer here)
      Ask yourself the questions before starting your research;
      What do I want and/or need from an instructor?
      How do I want to be treated? (hardly anyone considers this or asks the question of the service provider)
      What level of customer service can I expect?
      How will we measure my progress?
      How will the learning environment be? (for example following a mistake, will we discuss what can be learned or will we apportion blame)
      Look for codes of conduct, testimonials etc. Ask if it would be possible to speak with former or current pupils. Find out if the instructor adapt the lessons to suit you or will you be subjected to a one size fits all approach. The only person in the world who truly knows what is best for you is you.
      I hope that helps.
