- Correspondent Kris Van Cleave talks with Mary Barra, General Motors' second-longest-serving CEO, about the company's expanding electric vehicle lineup. He also takes a "high-speed" tour of GM's Milford Proving Ground in Michigan, which has been a hub for automotive innovation for a century, and gets behind the wheel of GM's soon-to-be-released electric Cadillac Escalade IQ.

GM hasn’t come close to their projections on EVs…. Not by a mile. Is this just an ad for GM? Come on cBS
How much did GM pay for this ad?
Trillions of dollars
GM pay for this ? I think not , you did ! Taxpayers , we are suckers !
I wish you guys would realize who is really in control and the fact that we should not have to pay for gas or electric. Look into the technology we could actually have if the greedy were not just worried about their own family being the richest. If everyone saw it with their own eyes they would believe it. There is far greater technology than they are leaking to us just to keep the rich rich.
Oh you cynics! It's easy to believe in nothing.
@briandevoe730 GM paid everything back years ago after 2008 financial crisis
Only $130,000?!
What a deal! 😂😂😂
It's the flagship Cadillac. It's supposed to be expensive. The upcoming electric Mercedes G-Wagen starts at $161,500.
Now the dealer lots full of $80k pickup trucks? That's something worth complaining about. A light-duty truck meant for everyone ought not to carry a luxury price tag.
@@iluvcamaros1912 Price is THE problem for the entire electrification program at GM, Ford, and Chevy. The media rallies about how the Chinese car makers have been supported by the government, so their prices are artificially low. But it accounts for at least 26% of the cars price... Of $9,7000. The vast majority of their savings is due to the vertical integration that none of the American auto companies are doing. And THAT is why it the American auto industry will die out, besides Tesla, who IS vertically integrating.
@@iluvcamaros1912 Agreed. I need a smaller Honda Ridgeline or Ford Maverick EREV more than a huge Silverado/Hummer/Lightning.
@@heyaisdabomb Tesla stands a good chance of dying out b/c Musk alienating his customers with his recent hard right turn to politics. I'll never own a Tesla while Musk is involved. All I see are enormous gas powered SUVs and pickups being offered by GM. They might be selling a few EVs but they're nowhere to be seen.
Yeah CBS needs to be more transparent about how much GM paid for this
The same 130K car will be worth less than a half after 3 years.
I wonder if GM plans to sell customer driving data to Lexis Nexis and others with these vehicles
You on social media, you on a cell phone?
@rp9674 Oh snap! You got me! Or you can think for a good 15-30 sec and ponder why it would be bad (and DIFFERENT than social media) to have your driving data sold. Give it some time, I’ll wait
The Chevy Bolt is/was a great commuter car at a great price and absolutely must be central to GM’s plans.
Sell your data.
Plagued with Quality issues.
The larger Equinox EV should be a better value, overall, and sell much better than the tiny Bolt.
my mother has one, she loves it
Didn't the Bolt have some issues with its batteries? I'm pretty sure I heard something about a massive recall.
Not a single question about their decision to no longer support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Interesting. This would be the first on my list as a consumer.
Dear vehicle manufacturers, you wanna make more sales? Go back to the basics. Less will always be more.
I completely agree. I still miss being able to roll down a window with a hand crank. What can you do when the electric wiring goes bad and your window is stuck in the open or shut position? A hand crank should be an override if that happens. And all those digital displays! Gauges with rotating needles are just fine.

The key to zero congestion is electrification? Uh....how?
Automakers have been promising zero congestion via self-driving cars for decades, even as far back as the 1950s. Congestion simply cannot be solved without reducing the amount of cars in the first place; it is a problem of geometry, not human error. Similarly with accidents, while they may be able to be reduced significantly if autonomous vehicles become safer than ones driven by people, it will be a lot harder if the infrastructure itself is not changed. Road widths must be narrowed, stroads eliminated, and land-use policy reformed. Even today where the technology exists I am skeptical that people will rely on it 24/7 and I think a lot of people just won't use it. Partially because some of the point of owning a car is being able to drive it yourself. I think in most cases public transportation will fill the role that automakers claim autonomous cars will.
It actually is - by making vehicles too expensive for the masses, road congestion will go down as fewer and fewer people can afford to own cars and through natural attrition older cars disappear - see Cuba for an example.
I love how she talks about GM's EV vision, as if they were leading the charge here. The were FORCED to adopt EV tech, because they see it's the future and if they insist on continuing with gas powered cars, when the shift has finally been made, they'll be a dinosaur. They're already way behind.
Please not with the school bus weight Cadillac like that in the thumbnail
Gas or battery - all the large vehicles are ridciulously heavy. I remember following a 4WD full size GM pickup across the scales at a recycling yard. Something like 7500 lbs empty.
I think the reluctance to converting to EV is infrastructure. There has to be a build out of charging stations and for apartment buildings to offer the same. It's coming, but it is slow. I saw the first installation of chargers in a grocery parking lot just this week. Another is pricing. All the EVs out there are SUVs or luxury sedans. Except for the bolt, there isn't anything for the other end of the spectrum. Detractors are also the problem. I thought we believed in capitalism. As this CEO said, there is something to be made for choice, let the market go. And if we are realistic, the younger generation prefers the EVs and it is the younger generation that will live into the future. They should decide what mode of transport is beneficiary. Trumps and their ilk, need to shut up and step aside. They are stifling free market competition, and shouldn't have the say as they will be six feet under before the consequences of inaction come about.
Legacy auto is clearly doomed. Ignorance on steroids.
Expensive EV's that will depreciate 50% the moment you drive it off the lot, what could go wrong?!
GM will be asking for another bailout
The lunacy of EVs is their popularity with car rental agencies. "Enjoy your vacation. Now, here's a list of inane things you need to do to return the car fully charged" 😑
WAS their popularity with rentals. It had disastrous effects on their business, and they are all regretting it.
I have taken long distance road trips in an EV. Have you? Or are you guessing what it would be like?

Someone should tell Mary to stop calling her employees "cave people" whenever they disagree her. As someone that works at GM, if you are interested in working here, I'd highly recommend going elsewhere at this time. It is not a good place to work right now. Layoffs occur roughly every 6 months and without notice, the bonus structure has been changed so that GM will have to pay out less to employees, forcing employees back into the office for arbitrary reasons even if they were hired in as a remote employee, removing apple car play and android auto so they can charge you a subscription fee to use the same apps, and outsourcing a lot of important work to other countries like India because its cheaper. The things they believe about EVs are things people were saying a decade or more ago that have long been since proven false. This probably figures into EV sales as well. I am all for driver assist tech like blind spot monitoring, lane keep warnings, and alarms that go off if the driver is motionless and impaired on the high end models. Self driving with the purpose of reliving the driver of the responsibility of operating the vehicle is insane. These large EV SUVs are literally 6000 pound missiles. If a 5 cent capacitor fails somewhere, it can cause a lethal collision despite the assurances they make about failsafe features. American car comapanies always want to impress with their top of the line models. @@rp9674 I daytripped an i3 REX. Great car. Excellent idea. We bought a BEV but would really like to have an EREV like the i3 REX design to replace our V6 SUV someday. Although if batteries continue to improve (and they will) then the pony gas engine won't be necessary much longer. Would like to have either faster charging or longer range for long trips. Our current BEV is excellent. Rarely need to charge for very long and it has ~250 miles of range which is plenty for 95%+ of our trips. Wouldn't likely take it on a long beach trip though b/c it is smallish and charge speeds are slow.
@joeaverager I have an I3 Rex that's relegated to a commuter since I got a 23 Bolt, long range, slow charging, although Miss Go Electric Channel insists it's short range. I rarely do long trips that would require fast charging, but I try it because I can't stand being on the road that long anyway charging brakes would be fine. After 2 or 3 hours on the road, I'd need to recharge more than the car would
That's called a plug-in hybrid, and I think its time has already come and gone. Pure EVs have become good enough, we don't need training wheels, and resources would be better spent building out more charging stations than building hybrids.

I really want an EV. Can't afford a $100,000 car. WTF I can't afford a $30,000 daily driver, esp if it break down after 4 years.
So buy a used Bolt/Kona/Niro/Leaf. That's what we did. Bought a Kona Ultimate. 3 years old, 30K miles, $20K. The less fancy versions are cheaper. Like new. Warranty on the battery is 10 yrs or 100K miles. Learn how to make your battery last longer i.e. don't DCFC all the time, charge to lower charge levels unless you need 100%. We charge at home to 60% and that lasts us most of the week. We reserve the higher charge levels for out of town trips.
Let’s see an EV less than $50k and a range of 400+ miles. That’s something that at least somewhat affordable for the everyday driver then upgrade the EV charging infrastructure. In other words let’s get real then you’ll have a chance at converting from oil and gas.
As charging stations get built out, I think people will fuss over range a lot less than they do now.
Excellent piece! GM’s new products are actually very nice. I just saw an electric Cadillac Cellestiq in Beverly Hills on display. It’s $300,000, hand built, and competes with Rolls Royce. (Surprised they didn’t show it in the clip). It’ll do VERY WELL in L.A. ……Cue the hate from the backward “Flyover states” still clinging on to their 1996 Ford Taurus’. Here in California, every other vehicle is already electric. 😎🥂👌
@@yvonneplant9434 …….VERY true!! I know people in Butte, Montana and visit once every summer (I live in L.A.). The first thing they usually do is comment on my “city clothes”, “fancy sunglasses”, “weird green smoothie breakfast” It’s as if I THREATEN their safe, unchallenging existence when I show up!! 🤷🏼♂️😂😎🥂
I want to live in a small town for a month and give myself the nickname Hollywood
@@rp9674 And drive a Porche 356 kitcar?
Wow great paid advertising by GM. This isn’t a report it’s coordinated corporate video. Certainly part of their coordinated campaign to swipe our tax money post election with grants and subsidies.
