Hey Eric, just wanted to say I've been subscribed to you for nearly 5 years now and have watched your channel grow. You're incredibly underrated and your well explained opinions are so fun and interesting to watch, especially because you speak your honest opinion and don't compromise your opinion just to please others. Keep going, your content is great and you never fail to entertain me and I've been watching for nearly 5 years now
The opening scene of the show in my opinion was definitely needed. And the scene where the kid gets put down and thrown into fire by Joel is to show how hardened Joel has become over 20 years.
Exactly. Not even Tess could do that. It took me a few to warm up to Bella Ramsey, but she sold me as Ellie. Pedro Pascal wouldn’t have been my first choice, but he does a fine job. Contrary to the reaction of this guy, I was holding back man-tears both times I watched Sarah’s death, more heartbreaking because we’d spent more time with her. The opening with the talk show effectively set up what was coming. I still have issues with it. It felt in a hurry to get to the finish line than let some more important character moments breathe, and it doesn’t really stray from the source material. I am a huge fan of the first game, but some more deviation from the source material would be welcome. Lastly, I wish the whole Robert thing had been handled differently, closer to the game. Killing them offscreen was a bad move.

Even if you've never played the original games before, the series stands on its own, and I love how they even have supporting roles for the original voice actors, namely Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson and Merle Dandridge.
I don’t get why everyone complains about the live action Ellie not looking like the video game version while Sarah isn’t even close to the original.
Ellie is a character that your going to stick with for the rest of the shows existence. Sarah comes and goes at the beginning of the episode. Although I do think that she was miscast in the role.
Troy baker is such a talented actor
I feel they've made the opening portion of the game a teensy bit drawn out while skimping on the action from the first quarter of the game. weirdly enough, they've downplayed Tess for some reason, she doesn't seem to be as tough as the game version. I'm glad they were much more direct in regards to her relationship with Joel though. those are my only complaints, everything else is good, even great. my favourite addition has to be John Hannah's speech at the beginning, hands down. Craig Mazin's genius that informed Chernobyl is definitely shining through here.

We need more adaptations like the last of us show
One of the best Interviews Given, I can’t wait to see Pedro Pascal do the interrogation scene when Ellie is kidnapped. Question, do you have any concerns with the scene where we realize Ellie is infected. I think that scene was rushed since we barely have any interaction in that scene.

I still think getting rid of the spores was not a very good choice. the new "kiss of death" isn't really ideal imo. the spores were supposed to be contained in cramped locations with dead clickers

I never was a big fan of the franchise but I played it back in 2018 and watched the cutscenes on UA-cam a couple times. I still remember some parts of the story and was amazed by how faithful the show was for the most part.
I do agree with the Sarah death comparison, though: the game handled it better imo.
Interesting you did a vs video for the first episode and not just wait for the entire first season to come out. Or atleast the half way point of the show.
I wouldn't put too much trust in the Super Mario Bros. Movie. NO, it's not because of Chris Pratt, although he is a part of the problem. It's because of the studio making it: Illumination.
1. If you know anything about Illumination, you know that they exclusively make films for children. It's not to say that it's bad to make films for children, but if you look at some of Pixar or DreamWorks' best films, Illumination comes off as the MCU of animation.
2. The adaptations. Any adaptations, specifically Dr. Seuss' books, which are just insults to the source material.
3.The cast. Almost all of Illumination's movies have actors who feel like they were typecasted because they're famous. If Chris Pratt wasn't famous, I'm certain Illumination and Nintendo would've just cast another famous actor.
Eric. As much as I almost always like your opinions and agree with many of your videos. This is one of the few times I have to completely Disagree with you on this one. But keep it up.
Hey Eric, I see where your coming from with Joel's reaction to Sarah's death and I respect that. I kinda think this Joel was more in denial that she was gone, that's why he was saying things like "I got to get you up". The hug that he gives her body after he realizes that she is really gone is like him saying I'm sorry for not protecting you, baby girl. That's how I see it.
I still think the show is very very good but it does kind of feel like your watching one of those videos that only show cut scenes also if you ever need an idea for a video after the show is done you could do a let's binge watch on it

If you own a PS3, PS4 or a PS5, buying The Last of Us IS mandatory and a MUST own! No questions!
As for the show (so far), it's passable. It's faithful to the story (for the most part). But I wasn't suspecting the show to surpass the game. Even though we're only 2 episodes in, the show is still good. But I REALLY doubt this series will surpass the game! As the old saying goes, "You can't create Lightning in a bottle twice."
Something that does really get me in Sarah’s death for the show is
Joel’s “TOMMY HELP ME”
The desperation in his voice is heartbreaking not to mention Tommy’s sad, quiet “joel..”
Idk, Hugh Jackman and Dafne Keen were the better Joel and Ellie in Logan.

Edit: I don't mean to post this comment. It's just that you didn't talk about her that much. Now, I'm aware that Sarah got race swapped. But despite this, the actress playing her did a decent job playing Sarah and I'll admit that she did a better job playing her than one of the two kids from "Dumbo (2019)".
I did enjoy the pilot episode of the last of us but I felt the same as you did the acting sarah's death was good but does lack the gut punch the game brought out. I got bored at some points and even though I am not a person who feel every tv show or movie needs action left and right being some of my favorite movies are slow burners, this to me did feel like a talking simulator but i think that this is just a bit of a rough start for the show and I do hope it goes from good to remarkable.

No offense, but you took WAY too much time on the scene of Joel's daughter dying, specifically the OG version. To the point where, ironically, I stopped feeling emotions

I...have to disagree with you man....rarely happen.....first than all....Sarah death GOT ME in the game and IN THE SHOW, I think Pedro Pascal kill it, I was sobbing watching this....of course I just play the game (not even finishing) 1 time, but I did all that cover episode 1 and again that scene got me, I liked the actors portrait of the characters....also the entire first part was to be done very well, AGAIN I played this game pretty much back in 2015 and I saw the show so I have not that FRESH outlook as you might have, but they KILL IT, not my favorite game adaptation today (very far away from ARCANE or CYBERPUNK EDGERUNNERS), but as live action game adaptation....very good stuff, I really think you got too harsh on this...of course compared with the GAME I will say the game does all this way better, no comparison, but.....a 6 as a whole, naah that's not right....to me at least is an 8 out 10 (and that goes to ep.2 also which I think did even better).....we disagree on this one sadly.
I agree, Sarah’s death in show still had a impact, just not the exact same as the game, and that’s alright, the show isn’t going to be a shot for shot remake of the game, because if it was, what would be the point?

We don't need the origin. We've seen enough zombie movies to get that there was a virus outbreak. Also we have a bunch of news reports in the opening credits of the game.
So the game managed to communicate the same thing without making a dedicated few minute scene.

@@EricCarter12 Regardless, most zombie movies don’t do that, the only expectation I can think of is “I am Legend” but I think it adds a little more layer to the series
@@gansdel Yes they would. Because the opening of Episode 2 would fill them in. In great detail too.
@@EricCarter12 That opening is necessary because it made people really terrified that this event meant actually happen in the real world and that uneasiness makes you connect to the series more. You do know that cordyceps exist in real life right?

I want to say not to nitpick, but he said everyone looks like the video game counterpart Joe’s daughter actually did it I’m not saying it’s a problem, and I know it’s common for shows to do my favorite shut. The flash that a lot. But they race swapped, Joels daughter again that’s not a problem, but she didn’t look much like her video game killer part either. Because his daughter was Caucasian with short. short blonde hair while his daughter in the show looks part African-American with curly hair but again that’s just my opinion. She didn’t look much like her character either. I’m still watching the first episode of the last of us and playing the game at the same time lol. But the question I have to ask why the first episode does Ellie look like she’s either nine or 10 Elliot actually looks like a teenager in the game OK to be honest I thought she was 16 in the game but when I did research, it said she’s 14 but I had to look it up because she looks like she’s nine or 10 in the shower.

Getting the guns from Robert was basically a tutorial mission and did nothing for the story. I don't mind the lack of action at all, when shit eventually does go down it's therefor much more impactful.
I diaagree, it wasn't just a tutorial. It showed that this is not just a world of humans fighting zombies, but Humans fighting Humans. It illustrated how cold Joel and Tess were when they interrogated Robert. It did a lot to establish character, tone and world building. Something that was missing from the first episode.
Joel throwing that child's body into the flames showed us how desensitised and cold he is. I actually feel that the human vs human element was shown with the Fireflies vs FEDRA skirmish during when Tess was being interrogated by Robert and his goons. We were also told about robbers and slavers roaming the outside world. Finally, I feel the show did a better job developing Tess, giving her more layers and a better (more defined) arc.
@@Peer165 True. But that goes back to my point in the video. That the show is TELLING us these things rather than showing us.
The game's method of telling the story was much more effective in my opinion and accomplished storytelling, character development and world building whilst also delivering an action sequence. That is a BIG accomplishment. The show goes the less interesting and, let's be honest... cheaper route.

Bella said she wqs told not to play the game. I'm going to assume the rest of the cast was told the same, which is dumb. She however just went to UA-cam to watch cut scenes. The actress who plays Sarah played the game years ago but wanted to do her own take on it. I hear from reviews that while faithful it's mainly a drama
It’s not actually because if you look at Pedros performance if he played the game and copied Troy baker’s performance it would have fallen flat immediately so it’s not a dumb decision
