I grow the Carolina Reapers. They're a beautiful red color, but they're ultra hot. I make hot sauce with them. I have to turn on the exaust fan, when I process them, or it's like having the atmosphere be pepper spray, just from cutting into one. I haven't tried to eat one raw. If I try, I'll be sure to wear gloves & have plenty of bread & cold beer at hand.

@@sparky6086 lol, drink the beer before eating the pepper! For me, more then a ghost pepper is a little too much where I cant enjoy the sweet fruity flavor.

I grew the habanadas last year and agree...totally worth it and so fun too! They are the ONLY kind of habanero I can eat. I had so many that I ended up drying a bunch of them and making a powdered spice from them. Now I can add that flavor to soups and dishes year round.

Heavy whipping cream works much better than milk for cutting the heat. It's the milkfat that cuts it. And if you get capsicum oil on your hands whilst cooking, "wash" your hands with whipping cream or full fat yoghurt and it will remove the oils. 😊

James here's what I've learned. I live In Kansas with summer heat hotter then the blazes, and winters as cold as Siberia. My Wife and I love Jalapenos. But if they're grown in direct sun all day, all summer, they're so hot you can't hardly tolerate them. But - if you grow them in partial shade and give them lots of water, there's hardly any heat, but the great Jalapeno taste is still there.

Habanada's are amazing - I grew them for the first time this year (I usually just grow superhots) - The taste is so misleading, you expect heat but it never comes! It truely is all the fruity flavour of a Capsicum Chinense without the heat. They're amazing for making chilli sauces for friends/family that don't like heat but want to experience real chilli flavour, and you can always heat the sauce up with a couple of real Habaneros... Habanada's give you the power of control over the hotness levels of your sauces, and they're great thrown in salads too! I can't praise them enough :)

Hey James thanks for taking one for the Gardening Team! I found the best way to preserve & be able to eat Habanero Peppers is to put them in a Smoker at low temperature until they are dried or you can finish drying them off in dehydrator. A real good guy, who I met at the Rutgers Farmers Market, Bill Devine of Rosetta Farms Spice Co. told me about this method. It adds a nice smoky flavor & moderates the intense heat. Pepper heads go wild for them. I'm also going to try just dehydrating them this season.
