Notice how instead of being angled from the officer, he got into his face and put his chest towards him. That's a threat. Plus no one could realistically restrain chief aside from MAYBE another S2. That and no one is going to arrest the man that is the savior of humanity.
An interesting note about the scene. It’s not as unrealistic as you might expect. Yes chief was trained since childhood to follow orders. But as we’ve seen his character develop we can see that his commitment is not to the UNSC or ONI, but in actuality his commitment is to humanity as a whole. In the US military all members take an oath to support and defend the Constitution. Enlisted personnel in particular have the added clause of “obey all lawful orders given by superior officers.“ Keyword there is lawful. Following an unlawful order is in direct violation of the oath you take. Here we see chief make the call that this is in fact an unlawful order and later in the campaign we see that notion supported by what happens to Captain Delrio. By not backing down in this scene his actions become exemplary, thus furthering the idea that he is the perfect soldier.
Even Funner Fact Captain Del Rio was relieved of command for leaving the chief behind, and blatantly ignoring a bigger threat that pose just as much risk to Earth & humanity as the Covenant and the Flood once had. and he was suppose to be Lord' Hood's golden boy to run the ship, yeah not even Lord Hood even backed him, so ouch. reference book Halo: The Thursday War, least for Del Rio for being lord hood's Favorite.
Respect to Lasky and Palmer in this scene. Lasky despite being told to remove Cortana, you can tell he didn't want to do it and purposely moved slow so Chief can get her. Loved him since the Forward Unto Dawn movie. Palmer despite being told to Arrest Master Chief, decided not to because she knows Chief is telling the truth and can handle this situation.
Chief defying Del Rio is one of my favorite moments of his in Halo 4, that and the guy was a dick, he deserved to have Master Chief upright say NO to his face

I love the angle of the shot when Delrio is ordering Palmer to arrest chief. It makes her look so small, when in reality we know she’s only slightly smaller then chief.
Sorry brother I know it's been three years but YEAH! Especially in light of her "I thought you'd be taller" joke earlier in the game. They point of that scene was to shock us and go "Oh wow maybe Spartans aren't so special anymore" and the camera framing in this is just one more example that there's only ONE Chief
343 fucked up with this, and we know 343 messes up a lot of things, canon height of chief is at least 6 inches taller when both in armor and out of it, he’s near a foot taller out of it, maybe not quite as tall as end halo 4 scene but in the middle

Not really. Noble Team was under a planetary defense protocol called "Winter Contingency," when they learned the Covenant discovered Reach. In this situation, they were on hostile soil with no reinforcements, so Del Rio wasn't bound by the same limitations as Halsey was, when she threatened to throw Kat in the brig over Lazlo's data card. That said, Lord Hood has offered Chief multiple promotions to Admiral, and is thus perfectly comfortable letting him make judgement calls like this. In the end, Del Rio would be fired for cowardice.
She also isn't wearing her helmet, which means that engaging the chief is a severely bad idea because all he'd need to do is land one punch to her head.
I always respect characters who are extremely well regarded and could snap everyone in two in the room but decide to not ressort to violence because they know it’s wrong and they don’t see themselves above others.

People shit on Halo 4 but honestly, I think its my favorite campaign. The character building is on a different level compared to the OG Trilogy. The relationship that we finally see flourish between Chief and Cortana is what was missing from the OGT. Plus Chief has more dialogue lines than the 3 previous games combined. I'm all for the strong and silent type like he was but having him find his humanity and speak more really made me connect with Chief on a whole new level. Halo 5 had some good moments too and I did actually like the Gaurdians and The Mantle of Responsibility storyline that was being made but then Inifinite just wrapped up that entire storyline off screen. Fuck that pissed me off. Infinite is fine on its own but it feels like Halo 7, not 6. Narratively, it feels like an entire game happened between 5 and 6.

For those who don’t understand chain of command. Although Del Rio as an officer technically outranks MC, it’s way out of line. MC’s boss is essentially Lord Hood who is WAY above Del Rio’s boss. Pulling rank like that was so out of line that the orders would never be followed by anyone.
More or less, yeah. I mean, Any Spartan (Even Master chief) would most of the time obey an order from Del Rio because they have rarely any reason not to. But they can decline it, if they feel it is necessary for the mission. (How I understand it, I might be wrong)

Alright Devil's Advocate, as a longtime Halo fan, Del Rio was kind of right and just went about it unhinged and actively antagonistic to the Master Chief. Cortana was in rampancy, she was shorting systems on the ship, Del Rio was following protocol by attempting to return to UNSC space at all cost to at least warn about the incoming threat and allow other generals to plan or create a defense, and while almost no one was willing to leave the chief behind, his decision to stay behind was actively playing against standard protocol. Everything could have gone horribly wrong if Del Rio didn't return, such as losing the Flagship of humanity on it's first deployment and it's just John's luck that he was able to tag along with the Covenant ships. And on that point, the Chief didn't even stop the Didact from getting to Earth. Everything would have shaken out exactly the same except if Del Rio didn't leave, then Earth might not have had the Infinitiy's MAC's to blow a hole in the Mantle's approach. And of course, back to Cortana, she is in rampancy and has on multiple occaisions in the campaign, failed to due something due to her own rampancy problems making her a liability to the last option for saving Humanity's flagship and warning Earth. All I'm saying is that I would probably treat the Chief and Cortana with far more respect deserving of their accomplishments, but I can't say I would just blindly go along with the Chief's plan when I have the largest and most technologically powerful ship humanity has ever created, thousands of service men to look after, and the duty to return to earth and warn of any incoming threat and debrief to report on what was found.

For those who don’t understand chain of command. Although Del Rio as an officer technically outranks MC, it’s way out of line. MC’s boss is essentially Lord Hood who is WAY above Del Rio’s boss. Pulling rank like that was so out of line that the orders would never be followed by anyone.

I mean, Any Spartan (Even Master chief) would most of the time obey an order from Del Rio because they have rarely any reason not to.
But they can decline it, if they feel it is necessary for the mission.

Alright Devil's Advocate, as a longtime Halo fan, Del Rio was kind of right and just went about it unhinged and actively antagonistic to the Master Chief. Cortana was in rampancy, she was shorting systems on the ship, Del Rio was following protocol by attempting to return to UNSC space at all cost to at least warn about the incoming threat and allow other generals to plan or create a defense, and while almost no one was willing to leave the chief behind, his decision to stay behind was actively playing against standard protocol. Everything could have gone horribly wrong if Del Rio didn't return, such as losing the Flagship of humanity on it's first deployment and it's just John's luck that he was able to tag along with the Covenant ships. And on that point, the Chief didn't even stop the Didact from getting to Earth. Everything would have shaken out exactly the same except if Del Rio didn't leave, then Earth might not have had the Infinitiy's MAC's to blow a hole in the Mantle's approach. And of course, back to Cortana, she is in rampancy and has on multiple occaisions in the campaign, failed to due something due to her own rampancy problems making her a liability to the last option for saving Humanity's flagship and warning Earth.
All I'm saying is that I would probably treat the Chief and Cortana with far more respect deserving of their accomplishments, but I can't say I would just blindly go along with the Chief's plan when I have the largest and most technologically powerful ship humanity has ever created, thousands of service men to look after, and the duty to return to earth and warn of any incoming threat and debrief to report on what was found.
