    Italy and Greece have a massive advantage though, since they fish in the Mediterranean a lot and it is a completely different style of spearfishing from the other places. Very technical spear fishing in the Mediterranean indeed. Great video!

      Some very talented divers in Europe that’s for sure. There are a handful of guys in Australia I know fishing up to 55m on a semi regular basis.

      Daniel Mann wow wasn't aware of anyone pushing those depths in Aus. Chasing red emperor or large mouth I'm guessing.

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  6 років тому

      One such 55m dive was a 5kg Maori cod from a wreck in NSW and another plus 50m was for a Queensland record pearl perch. Lots of big reds taken between 40 and 50m also. Big large mouth can be found in shallower water if you know where to look.

      badejo branco You must get to know the real God Jesus Christ. I have a small message about God for you.Do you believe in God,? In the last day Jesus would resurrect everyone who ever lived including the good and the bad, and the good would go to heaven while the bad would perish and be tormented in Hell for all eternity, there is no reincarnating into another species, that is a lie, you only have this life to get right with God. today I want to share with you the Gospel of God Jesus Christ who is the only God who came in the flesh and lived among us about 2000 years ago and he was crucified and died for our sins, all men have sinned against God and hence we live in a world full of trouble because the first people named Adam and Eve ate from the tree which God commanded them not to eat from, hence because of their disobedience, Adam and Even were cast out of Paradise. But God in his love and mercy made a way for us to get back into this paradise so that we can once again live with him for eternity in paradise where we never grow old or die and where there is no pain or suffering for all eternity. Today you can take the first step in this journey by believing in God Jesus Christ and accepting him as God(as he was not just a good teacher) and by repenting of your sins. In the last day Jesus would resurrect everyone who ever lived including the good and the bad and the good would go to heaven while the bad would perish and be tormented in Hell for all eternity, there is no reincarnating into another species, that is a lie, you only have this life to get right with God. Therefore we must repent of our sins today and realize that we are not Gods, neither are we divine, only God is divine. Jesus is God and he taught us how to live when he came to Earth , there are 2 destinations either Heaven or Eternal hell fire, those believe in Jesus Christ and who live according to Jesus Christ would go to Heaven but those wicked people who reject him and choose their own paths would be cast into the lake of fire where they shall be tormented for all eternity, this is just the reality, nonetheless it is not fear that cause me to live for God but rather it is my love for him in that he is a merciful and loving God. Focus on the things of God instead of the things of this world as the things of this world are only temporary but the things of God are eternal. If you would like to know more about this I encourage you to study the ESV and KJV Bible as there is vital knowledge that you must have in there as it explains Gods plan for Humanity and what we must do to please him. Do not delay, tomorrow is not promised.Jesus bless you

    Safety or training has improved from the days when a few were lost at each competition. I remember the 80's in the USVI St Croix against St Thomas, ego's on display and manhood to prove. Sad to see the desperation to win at any cost or tactic in world championships. At age 80 I shot the largest snapper in a Port Fouchon La. memorial tournament (Bill Crawford memorial) 2 years ago but refused to weigh it. I was there only to honor my deceased friend and visit with the cajuns. The competitive fire is long gone and harvesting a nice fish now is only done now for the joy of being in the water and obtaining a meal. I suppose the competitive fires of youth will drive this event into the future. My paradise lost was diving the reefs of Anegada BVI in the 80's, myself and my wife being the only souls on the reef, picking and choosing our meals. Sadly I suspect if I was in my 20's or 40's and had the means I might pursue competitions again - Real men love 2 things, danger and play - that's why he wants woman, the most dangerous plaything (FN) and so it goes.

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  6 років тому +2

      Still diving at 82 - Stanley you legend! I agree that safety standards and awareness must have vastly improved. At the same time diving has become more technical for these deep spearos and the risk also increases.
      When did you first start diving?

    • @stanleycates1972
      @stanleycates1972 6 років тому +2

      Scuba 1960 shooting goliath (shallow) and warsaw (deep) grouper with SS cable and rope riding rigs - free diving 1975 till now. An addiction that has slowed down because no buddies left near my area and too old to run the boat, clean up in the heat etc, wife fell on the pier so no more boats for us. Charters here are $$$$$$ We went to Bahamas last June Green Turtle Cay after I dove with editor of Spearing mag (Will Powers) Will return this year and hope to improve using a sling. Still beautiful reef there and lots of fish and sharks. Have a new pacemaker that has improved my performance can now go up and back in the pool under water. As you know, spear fishing is an addiction. Sadly it has become so popular everyone wants to get into the business. Tried to retire in Panama, lasted 9 months. Spearing there sucks. Gulf of Mexico rigs hold more fish than most can imagine. The best place left is Port Fouchon La. But, often poor vis and ripping current.

    Looks like some challenging diving out there. Why is there such a lack of fish in Greece? Are there any regulations?

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  6 років тому +2

      It's been overfished for centuries. Regulations of course but still the fish are very smart. I went to Italy last month and currently making a video about the spearfishing there.

    • @Stkouro
      @Stkouro 4 роки тому

      Regulations, right. During the month of May, spear fishing is not allowed but commercial fishing is allowed, including trawlers. Simply put the Greek waters are overfished all year round and the fish population doesn’t have the time to replenish. If you factor in the non indigenous fish that have invaded from the Suez Canal (like the Lagocephalus sceleratus) that have no predators in our waters, soon enough we will be talking about whole species going extinct.

  • @SazParts
    @SazParts 5 років тому +3

    I’m n Greece currently, I have caught 1 octopus and five small fish with my spear gun. The fish are just too smart. When you don’t have anything on you, they just swim up to you and are basically like “beeeeeeeetch!” . So I hand fish and I have caught five octopus with my hands, and I grabbed a bunch of fish tails, but no fish yet.

    • @notairsoft119
      @notairsoft119 4 роки тому +1

      Yeah there have been studies that show that fish here recognize spearguns and bolt immediately. You have to adapt and use more sophisticated tactics than just swimming up to the fish like you do in the rest of the world. I reccomend watching some Greek or Italian youtubers to better get the feel of it

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  5 років тому

      I was just the reserve diver but mainly wanted to go to film. If you are a decent diver in Australia and have the funds more than likely you can jump on the team. Comes down to cash but living in Europe makes it cheap for me to head there.

      Its true . Fish in Greece suffered a lot for a lot of reasons like overfishing and the threat of the tropical (and venomus for humans) fish coming from the indian ocean ,which have no natural enemies in the Mediterranean sea

      Unfortunately I had nothing to do with organising the Australian team so please don't be upset with me. The Australian team was picked from results at Australian National championships so unless you competed in those you wouldn't be eligible for the team. You would have been great for local knowledge and scouting/coaching with the team no doubt.

    Sideris was probably right to protest and kudos to him that he did. I don't care about nationalities and "friendships". If you cheat you cheat and you should be stopped. To protest means you protect all other athletes too, not just yourself.

      I was wondering the same thing.. If it was over fished or just not a "good" area.
      But i can see a point in having the world champion ship held in a place where its gonna be extremly hard to catch anyfish.
