Canberra was a wonderful place back in the 70s. Our family lived there until the 2000s. Canberra is no longer the Bush Capital. If you move there in 2023, buy a bomb shelter and hire a Security Guard. I will never go back to Canberra Nor Sydney where I was born. Greenacres for me.
Anything via Australia in the 1980's was just wonderful here, I have no doubt especially in 1982 that it was beyond epic. Pity I was only 5 at the time and nice doco etc.
4:03 it's so weird seeing how that tall building, 40 Marcus Clarke, Canberra House, is so prominent. Compared to today, it is being somewhat dwarfed by newer tall buildings.
It's a windblown desolate shell these days. Thank goodness I visited in 1989. It felt like an overseas city and was bustling then. Loved the orange ACTION buses.
I lived there from 1969 to 1975 in my teens. After moving to Perth for my father's latest army posting, the lifestyle was like chalk and cheese. Perth was so laid back and friendly. Returning to Canberra years later to visit family, I noticed how formal and superficial it was. Just going for a walk people looked through as if you didn't exist. In Perth it is so rare that you don't acknowledge a stranger with a smile and a good morning gesture. Canberra, have a nice life!
Telstra own the property and did not really make a profit while it was open in the 2010s, so the company is in no rush to refurbish to modern standards and reopen it again. It has been said that the tower, which has a primary purpose of housing microwave dishes, is largely redundant and obsolete due to the ubiquity of optical fibre links in the region.
Not the Australian Government, but the ACT Government. There is so much urban infill, so many parks and recreational areas gone. Hi rise apartment blocks everywhere, nowhere to park and nowhere fit the kids to play. The greed and stupidity of the local government knows no bounds.
@@margaretmatthews4872hit the nail on the head with that one! They've ripped the heart out of Canberra and have no idea how to design the city just sticking buildings all over the place and rezoning everything it's disgusting what they're doing!!

The place is a dump I know I have lived here over 40 years this local government is a disgrace (greens labour) they have been in for nearly 20 years. They are the ones that have done this to Canberra I wouldn’t feed this bunch of oxygen thieves
Was and still is an artificial place. The superficiality is made worse by the government employees who think of themselves superior to the rest. It’s one of the saddest places I ever lived.

Thank you just love old old Canberra 🎉🎉🎉
Wonderful! This is the Canberra I love and remember. I left in 1987 but return every year to visit family

There are so many building in the city now it’s not even noticeable 😢
So intersting to see what my home city looked like the year my older brother was born🙂

Yep, Canberra generally sucks people wise but it's my town.
Great city, no traffic jams, fresh air, heaps of infrastructure, great schools, plenty of space.Syney Melbourne Brisbane are shitholes compared to ACT
I was at the ANU in 1982, as a first year BA student
Now telecom/telstra tower just sits there abandoned i remember visiting it as a kid shame it gets no use now
Is it closed? About five years ago, it was still open to visit.
@@nickshipway8199 it's closed and tight as a nuns nasty....
Yeah Communists shut it down a few years ago. Yet to reopen
Telstra Tower is still in active use by the company, the property is just closed to the public.

I love Australia
Please reopen Telstra Tower and fix the carillon. And start building more of those iconic bus stops. #MakeCanberraGreatAgain

And the Australian government has destroyed most of it 💯

And the ACT government hasn't invested in Canberra only the developers for profit

Riveting. Much like the city itself.
Now look at the place . Progress has trashed Canberra .
I agree. Some of the new buildings are overshadowing what makes Canberra good

Was is and always will be wasted space…
IMHO
Disneyland
And a mind-blowing boring place it was too.
Even the local clubs are a dive no live music barely a pool table to be seen.....
That lake is an absolute waste gets no use maybe half a dozen fishermen now and again but thats it oh and some fitness guru's that run around it
yeah I love it. Took a 40km bike ride the other day. Kms of bike track still almost completely unoccupied. Love it.

So the question is: where are the people? Especially the Aboriginals? All decimated by the english colonizers?
Everyone is in Brisbane for Comm games.....
Yeah right …
