I can't believe we only have 2 episodes left! I am loving these complex characters, should I watch the original seasons of Bridgerton? If there is something missing from this episode that you'd like me to comment on let me know and I'll try and answer it in the comments or in next week's video. Thank you for being here! 👇
I would watch you react to Bridgerton. I think you would enjoy breaking down the personalities and interpersonal dramas of the show, particularly the Sharma sisters of season 2 and Penelope.
I think it would be great to see you break down the rest of the series. While there isn't anything to the extent of George, they definitely go into how different types of trauma can effect peoples actions, relationships and how that plays into the time period. Your interpretations of actions, feelings and growth would be very interesting.
@jahnoyawalker4227 cheating is a choice and Violets father took that choice and befriending Violets had nothing to do with her situation but rather bcoz they actually had a connection
@@TalandaNyoka I’m not sure why you’re responding to me but you proved my point. They both made the choice to be a cheater but the comment above was about Lady Danbury so I talked about her. I personally don’t care if she built a connection with Violet. The fact that she didn’t tell her about it makes her terrible.
Charlotte’s face as she watched George during his episode and realized what was happening was so heartbreaking. It’s obvious she cares for George, but I fully understand her frustration when talking to his mother. Having such a major thing hidden from you and then having it sprung on you out of nowhere would be upsetting to most people. It’s so sad that George overheard the conversation because it just reinforced all his fears about not being good enough.
The "doctor" that treated George? The Portuguese would later hire this guy to treat Queen Maria. She died insane in the convent her family put her in after they fled to Brazil to escape Napoleon. He was a priest who ran an insane asylum. It is said when George met him for the first time, he commented on the guy's collar (he was an Anglican priest) and the priest pointed out that Jesus healed the sick too. George then made a snappy comment to the effect of "Yeah, yeah, but he wasn't paid [insert amount] to do so, though."
What a brilliant, eloquent and insightful analysis about life, society and mental illness. From the disclosure of George’s potential illness to the way you were able to dissect and speak about racism, classism and privilege this video is an educational resource to any person. And as a black woman I feel that this is the content more people need to watch and listen in order to confront their own biases and actually learn how to navigate life and relations with others. (New subscriber 🙋🏿♀️…loaded!)
when that doctor first said talk therapy, I was like "wow this is progressive" and then later we find out that his idea of "talk" is basically physical punishment behavior modification. The medical torture scenes were very rough for me and imo went on too long. It's a very disturbing thing I was not expecting from this usually light, sexy costume drama rom-com series. It was traumatizing.
Episode 4 was so triggering, I wish they had included a content warning. I was of course aware that the series would deal with King George's condition, as we see it in the first two seasons, but I was not prepared for the medical abuse and torture we saw here. Especially that very last scene, where George goes back and his voice breaks while he tells the doctor to strap him back in - I was just flooded with sadness as well as old emotions from past trauma surfacing again. I was not prepared. You analysed it very well and your content warning was what the show should have done as well. While I have a totally different diagnosis (personality disorder with histrionic and narcisisstic traits), I really, really felt George in all those scenes. How the stress takes over, a schema gets activated, and I fall into maladaptive coping mechanisms that feel out of my control. I dissociate and see myself doing and saying things that are just horrifying, while I at the same time am trapped in the situation and don't know how to get out of it. I am glad that years of therapy with a very warm, empathetic therapist helped me through it, so I now am able to recognise stress before it gets too much and avoid the unhealthy coping mechanisms. But for George, that's just not possible because the science wasn't there yet. Instead, he has a doctor who thinks he needs to take away even more of his agency to make him better, when the opposite is the case. It's just all around heart breaking to see here.
I could not agree more and I’m extremely disappointed that more people aren’t talking about this. It was ridiculous that there was no content warning. I too got very triggered 😞 Previous to watching the show I knew nothing about the real King George and was not prepared for the torture he went through for his mental illness. It was completely ignorant for the creators to display this with absolutely no warning and no disclaimer that these tactics were completely unethical and outdated. Heaven forbid someone misinterprets the show and thinks some of these ‘treatments’ may be effective for them. It’s infuriating!!!
glad you're reacting to this! I often think of what would happen if modern psychologists could actually witness and give opinions on outdated mental illness "treatments"
I am at the same point in the series, so no spoilers, just my hypothesis. My gut reaction was the kings doctor was furious at being fired, his ego couldnt take it, and so he told george Charlotte was pregnant specifically to trigger stress symptoms, to make himself needed again. Charlotte might not even be pregnant as we have no indication she actually met with this doctor at all.
31:50 I'm glad you pointed this out because not only is it true for mental illness, but from a storytelling perspective, it drops a hint about the doctor and his "treatments"
I've only just found your channel and have to tell you that I truly am enjoying your breakdown of this series. You are so insightful, and I'm not only enjoying your reaction but also learning so much! Thank you so much for your work on breaking down these characters.
29:22 it totally is for me! I love how sweet your voice is, like a bell chime and I love how empathetic or maybe even sympathetic you are, if that's the right word, and how well you explain things. There's a certain comfort I feel listening to you. Like that one motherly friend who never judges you and understands you ❤ thank you so much for all the effort you put into making these videos 😊 I appreciate the knowledge you pass onto us ☺️
Something that I've been thinking lately.... is that George was also, if not more, upset at the thought of the doctor treating Charlotte and the baby, than of Charlotte being pregnant. I'll have to read the book again to be sure, but it's crossed my mind.
This was such an interesting watch. Loved it and love that u pointed out how despite George’s struggles when Charlotte asked George to go to the ball he went.
Private Practice would be a great show for you to watch, there is a lot of trauma + a great portrial of the aftermath (abuse - disassociating with child - sexual assault - substance abuse)
Seems like beauty and the beast. I have CPTSD and manic episodes can also mimic dysregulation. This mother of his is narcissistic and his empathic nature makes him quite abused and he is lucky to be holding his own at all. The trauma can very well cause BP1. The panic attacks would be not understood. He has mental breakdowns. His identity is bifurcated by being a king and a perceived defective - the neglect, abuse, perceived mental defectivness could all be a stew that lead to psychosis and these bouts of paralysis. I couldnt look at the torture scenes. They needed trigger warnings. The acting is great
I think the 'doctor' gave George PTSD with his 'treatments', exacerbating his anxiety condition which triggers his episodes. I also wonder if he has some sort of dementia? Would that account for his behaviours? 🤔
I don’t know if anyone caught it but in the next episode when lady Danbury goes to talk to princess Augusta about her son she mentions how her and George were abused by her husband. Or did I miss understand?
I stumbled upon your reactions. I really appreciate your insighful thoughts about about these characters. I would be interested in your thoughts on the first two seasons. There's a lot of trauma there, but nothing approaching King George.
I have questions about Dr. Monro (George's doctor). I'm not speaking about the historical figure (since I know nothing about the man this character was based on). I'm only speaking about the character (as played by Guy Henry). So many people in the comments of other videos are calling the doctor "evil" and as the character of Camille says on the TV show The Originals, "I don't believe in evil as a diagnosis," and I'm inclined to agree with her. 🤷 The doctor's behaviors are certainly unacceptable and mostly harmful to George, of course. However, we also know that for much of human history, very little was known about the brain and how it functions. Especially with regard to mental health. So, I suppose what I'm wondering is...if it's possible that rather than being intentionally malicious, what we're seeing here could be more of an attempt to throw it all at the wall and see what sticks so to speak? Curious to hear your thoughts on this, and either way, I thank you for these helpful and insightful reactions 🙏❤️☺️
I would love to hear what your opinion of the love story in season one would be, because I have a hard time seeing a certain action the female lead, Daphne, acts out upon her love interest, Simon, as very romantic, healthy, or even a nice thing to do. And I did not like how the show seemed to think that Simon was the only one in the wrong and who had to apologize
I understand how Violet took Lady Danbury's "you are most fortunate" statement, but I really disliked Violet's attitude about the fund for poor girls' education (something Eloise would be very excited about). She basically mocked it, and I think she should actually do it. It doesn't take away from her mourning Edmund as she seems to imply.
That's an interesting take on it, definitely. For some reason, when I watched that part of their conversation, I was thinking Violet's reaction had less to do with the type of charitable cause Lady Danbury was talking about and more to do with Violet's view that advice was being given to her by someone she was upset with. I know that when I feel offended (as Violet was likely feeling after Lady Danbury calling her fortunate) I sometimes have a knee-jerk reaction to disregard the other person's opinions. So I might be wrong in thinking this, but I'd be surprised if the topic yielded the same type of reaction from Violet if it came up during a time they weren't in a quarrel with one another. I definitely agree though, that type fund would be a really cool investment that Eloise would be super enthusiastic about! 😊👍
@@sorchamiana I don't think Lady Danbury was advising her to give to charity or that Violet was upset because of the type of charity. Lady Danbury's saying that she gave to charity because she didn't have what Violet had had was also not thrilling to me, to be honest. I know the intent behind the scene was good, but, for me, it was a fumble.
@@HuntingViolets ah, gotcha. Yeah, I didn't think LD meant to advise her either but it seemed to me like Violet sort of took it as advice, I could be wrong about that tho. I think I see what you mean about the scene overall. I feel like they could have shown a similar conversation but with better communication between the two and then it would have been less confusing all around 🤷
@@sorchamiana They kind of made a set-up scene with the misunderstanding so they could have the later scene, but they could have done it without the set-up scene, really. Maybe that doesn't make sense, though. Anyway, I just ended up annoyed with Violet, but it wouldn't be the last time, so that's okay.
The doctors speach about the dog, being molded from wolf into pomeranian by being caged and broken makes me mad. It is a lie. It is stupid. It is not good, necessary or helpful to cage and brake a dog. And this dog is a Pomeranian!!!. They have been bred to be friendly, playful, loyal, alert and intelligent. They have been bred to be this way. The friendliest wolfs and then dogs, that had the looks, were selected to get a dog with this character. To get an adult dog, that is nice and playful, like it should be you have to play with the dog, spend time with it and connect with it. There is never torture involved in the upbringing of a pleasent Pomeranian. The opposite is true: Mistreat a Pomeranian and it gets aggressive. It will bark and fight.
While I appreciate your other insights in this video, I really hoped that you would say that this doctor was treating the king like an anima and that is according to his twisted sick thinking and animals too should not be treated that way, that are living beings too and can feel too, and though it is a given, but it’s so highly important to advocate for animals too, not only humans. We are all living beings with rights and in most cases, animals are much better than humans and more loving and much purer . How can anyone specially shown that sweet dog being submissive in a cage not feel even worse for him/her?! Because animals did not make a choice like George, they can’t speak and are weaker, it is our responsibility to help them and be compassionate and protective of them if we are decent and worthy of the breath and life we are given . It makes me so sad when the animals are not thought of or defended, but I’m so grateful that it’s not always the case.
