Johnathan.... make more models for us please, I use your models to play EoE AoR and F&D. And sadly currently your model selection is rather limited. Need more options especially for characters. I know those games are meant to go without figures but my group loves seeing figures all painted up and such and it negates any debates about character placement. All in all... love the models keep them coming and faster please :)
I wanted to say this tutorial got me into painting my miniatures! I never thought it would be for me, but after seeing this I just gave it a go. I started with one stormtrooper and reached the wash stage yesterday. The result is really satisfying so far; I can't believe how cool it already looks! What I really like about your tutorial is that you really give a starter like me the idea that I can do it. You gave the exact info that I needed to start, nothing more, nothing less. Can't wait to finish the stormtroopers and continue on to the probe droids! Thank you so much and please keep it up!
First of all, thank you for making these videos. I have painted a few dozens of miniatures already (from Warhammer, to WH40k, tanks, animals..), but it's always great to go back over the basics. I wanted to tell you that your tutorial is probably the single best I have ever seen for newcomers to the painting hobby. And I am not only talking about the way you present the methods of going at it, but you give little tips that makes the handling easier. Plus, you keep reminding these newcomers that "don't worry about X, we will do it later. Or if Z happens, you can easily fix it by doing this step". Hell, I decided to stop my video midway when I was blown appart by your very savvy and layback suggestion of "just experiment, start a music and let yourself get into a concentrated state of mind" just so I can write this post. The idea of starting with black and white stormtroopers was also a stroke of genius on your part: START IN BLACK AND WHITE. Man, why didn't I ever thought of that? It allows for an easy ease-in of the difficulty. Seriously man, I will recommend your channel and videos to all friends who want to pick up the hobby.
Hi Remi - Thank you so much for the kind words! I was humbled by the response this video had when I made it over a year and a half ago and I am still humbled by such comments today. Thank you for recommending my videos also; it's very much appreciated :)
I was worried about storage of painted miniatures. I know the gloss/mat cover helps protecting the paint, but do you think it would resist being stored in ziploc bags within the box when moved around? I usually wrap my painted miniatures in towel paper when I move them around, but Imperial Assault is so massive; I don't think it's an option.
Hi Remi! I don't think I would like to risk trying to store the minis in ziploc bags.. I keep mine in a display cabinet since I don't have the need to travel with them, but there some some pretty nice storage solutions available if you search for "Imperial assault storage": www.google.co.uk/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=imperial%20assault%20storage
I came across these videos while i was looking for more info on the game itself. you got me and my 8 year old son into painting. It's really giving life to these miniatures... Thank you so much
I am not a "mini gamer" but I have loved getting back into board games in the last few years. I have truly enjoyed several "board games that have mini's" but was never interested in painting them UNTIL I WATCHED THIS VIDEO. I now own a copy of this game and am going to be painting this game. Thank you for the tremendous time commitment and remarkable production value, Mr. Sorastro.
Masterfully done tutorial! Simple yet comprehensive. And your Stormtroopers look fantastic! My copy of Imperial Assault arrives tomorrow. I know exactly what I'll be doing.
What an excellent series of tutorials. I am new to the hobby and your videos have proved invaluable to me. Great on all fronts; content, presentation style, and production, making them a joy to watch as well. Looking forward to Ep. 11! :)
Wow! What a sensational video! My son and I have been interested in miniature painting for awhile. Your video and our new Imperial Assault game are a match made in heaven. Brilliant! Bravo!
+Adam Dork Depends on room temperature and humidity but really it's best to just wait it out. While waiting for one to dry I tend to start work on another.
+Adam Dork Hi Adam! As Mojo says - it can vary quite a bit. The wash is the thing that takes longest to dry but it's easy to see when it is. I find the other stages dry in a matter of minutes. If I'm trying to be quick I will place the minis in front of a fan to speed things along :)
I tend to work my way through a squad and find that the first one is dry by the time I finish the last in any step, other than wash coats. I try to time those so it's dried overnight before I continue.
Once all our paint comes in, Me and my buddy are doing Imperial Assault. It will be our first game with miniatures and we are super excited. Your videos are a huge help.
Great video! Any advice for how much water to thin with the white? my white colors have come out very blotchy/chalky, and seem to have covered a lot of the wash details.
Thank you sir! It's difficult to give hard-and-fast guidance regarding how much water to add as every pot of paint will be different. You might find a slightly thicker consistency easier to work with to get you started (as it's less likely to run into the darker details), but it sounds to me like you may just have too much paint "loaded" on your brush; I would simply try "unloading" some of the paint on you brush before you apply it by brushing onto your pallet once or twice. If you have too much paint on your brush you can end up with blotchy pools on the figure that are difficult to control, but if you have too little paint on you brush, then there's no harm done - except you have to go back for more! Also, bare in mind that it's OK if your first layer looks a little blotchy and uneven as you'll probably be going over it again once or twice to build up to a more solid, even white. This is without doubt the hardest part of the process, but a good opportunity to get a feel for how the paint behaves at different consistencies and learning to control it. If it's any comfort, I spent around 30 mins for each storm trooper on this stage :) Finally, I don't know what brushes you are using, but a good brush can make a big difference here. Hope this helps - let us know how you get on!
Sorastro's Painting Thank you so much for the response. I'm using artist's loft Vienna brushes. size 5/0, 0, and 1, I've went over the miniature again with black wash, since much of the details were covered by the splotchy white. I will try putting a lot less paint on the brush, and take my time. Hopefully I can still salvage the mini! Thank you again!
Who are the three sad people who thumbed this down!?! "I didn't like where he applied his battle damage!" "I didn't care for the brand of cardboard box he used for his priming!" "There were too many people gives this a thumbs up so I had to balance the tables." SMH.
+Tim Emmerson HaHaHa. I thought the same thing. Why would possible "thumb down" this video. Its fantastic. I choose to think they hit the wrong icon and didn't know they could switch their vote.
Thank you so much for doing this series!!! I haven't picked up a brush and painted a miniature in over 20 years, but you've helped bring me back, and exceed my own meager talents. You are definitely helping many of us up our games!!!
I just recently started playing Imperial Assault and have been wanting to paint the figures for that extra dynamic to to game. I’ve never done any miniature painting and found this tutorial absolutely amazing. My troopers turned out fantastic! Thanks!
Never tried painting anything before and this was a FANTASTIC first step - wonderful guide, thank you! Letting the wash dry now and they already look great!
I've never painted before, but couldn't stand all the grey figures for this game so decided to get into it. These tutorials are A+++. Your soothing narration rivals Bob Ross, lol.
Thank you so much! Please don’t stop. I’ve been playing Xwing for a while and it’s got me into board gaming. I really wanted IA but didn’t have the people to play it. Now the support App came out I asked my wife it for Christmas. What I didn’t ask for was for her to quietly listen to me talking about how cool the game was and I wanted to paint it up like this guy (showing her your video) Christmas Day comes and she not only bought me the game but a whole painters starter set from your video that she studied several times as the hours dwindled in the office nearing Christmas Day. So Christmas evening (so grateful to my awesome wife) I sat down with a Rum and Ginger all my new kit and your amazing tutorials. It’s now New Year’s Eve and I’ve just finished up one of the nine with Ardcoat and plan to do the rest tonight. They look amazing and I’m proud of my work all thanks to you. All the best for the future and HAPPY NEW YEAR!
+The Machine Hey there! Thanks so much for sharing this - I'm very happy to hear that you've enjoyed taking your first steps in this awesome hobby. Plus, your wife truly rocks! Happy New Year to you both :)
I love all of these tutorials, great job on all accounts. Presentation, layout, attention to detail, and the awesome quality of your work. Look forward to more of your work. Halfway through all of these, Thanks.
Sorastro, I can't thank you enough for taking the time to put this together. I'm having so much fun painting these figures. I'm the absolute definition of a beginner to this hobby and with your videos as a guide I really can say that my figures are turning out great. I love experimenting with different amounts of white on my troopers. I'm leaving some of them pretty grimy to really show their war hardened nature. I could blabber on for awhile but I'll just leave you again with my thanks.
Mathew Allen Thanks for taking the time to comment Mathew! I'm always happy to hear that my videos have helped a total beginner enter this wonderful hobby of ours. Welcome to the dark side!
Pedro Polanco Hi Pedro! I honestly can't really remember (I tend to lose track of time whilst I'm painting anyway!) but it did take quite a while. It also takes me a lot longer to paint when I'm filming the process too.
Not including drying time it took me a few hours. I was trying out different brushes and black washes so my time was a little bloated. I would suggest you plan more time than you think it is going to take you.
My son just bought Imperial Assault and we've never painted a miniature in our lives - but your video has inspired us to give it a try! Thanks so much for the pro quality and easy to follow steps. I hope we can produce something close to yours!
These panting tutorials are so good I have shared it with my friends and board game group who like imperial assault and want to paint those models fantastic work clear instructions good video quality outstanding.
Good day! I just wanted to say thanks for the tutorial. I picked up some white primer, the citadel's white scar, abaddon black, and mechanical grey, some ardcoat and tarnish. I'm going to start with a set of three stormtroopers. I'm going to prime them, paint in the blacks, paint the base grey, spray the varnish and add the ardcoat. Hopefully the results come out fine until the other stuff comes in. Thanks again!
Just received my Imperial Assault game for X-Mas and I was looking for a hobby for the last couple of years. That amazing video might have gave me the answer!!! Thanks can't wait to go shopping for some painting items!
I was painting miniatures from time to time in very rough (no primer, base paints only) manner but since I got imperial assault for christmas I decided to do it properly. Your guide videos are really well explained and done with amazing quality and patience and I intend to follow all of them as a guide to fully paint my IA minis. Thank you :)
This is awesome! I got Imperial Assault for Christmas, and now I want to paint all my miniatures. I see people's paint jobs, and they all look so complicated, but it looks like you've broken this process down to easier steps. Before I saw this, I never even had a desire to paint them, but now I do. Your video editing also deserves a compliment, very nice job! I can't wait for more episodes. Great job!
I found your painting tutorials when I starting painting my Zombicide miniatures. Your Toxic Zombies in particular were incredible. Any way, thanks for these great Star Wars Tutorials as well, it takes a true expert to show beginners how to paint something they will be happy with. Most tutorials try to be as complex as possible to "show how good they are", but you genuinely show us novice painters easy steps to make great looking minis. Your passion for painting minis truly shows in your effort to teach people how fun and easy painting can be.... Even if mine still won't look anything like yours haha. Thanks so much for what you do, the miniature community is a better place because of you.
I managed this first try. First time ever painted miniatures and I am very satisfied with the result. One comment here would be - the stands you need to each outline with a color because you also need to tell the standard squads apart when playing the game. Fantastic video series, completely sold me on miniature painting as a hobby
New to IA and painting minis. This videos series is amazing and I've just finished painting my storm troopers following your guide. Lots to learn still but turned out better than I imagined they would!
Nice Tutorial, I am going to try it out. As a more senior painter, my hand is not quite as steady as it used to be . So these technics you show are right up my street.
I did my own storm troopers today and I have to say following this tutorial I am so happy with the results. I think I used too much nuln oil though so my troopers look really gritty. all and all this has been my favorite and best attempt at mini painting and it is all thanks to this video series.
So happy I found this! You really should put Imperial Assault in the title, it will help people find these fantastic tutorials! Thanks so much for doing this.
I just started painting my set thanks to your video tutorials. I am my third Stormtrooper in and I gotta say, you make this look so much easier than it actually is! Those small details are killer!
I've never been much of an artist or a painter, but I really want to get into IA. I'd been worried about painting minis, but you really made this look much less difficult than I thought it was. looking forward to spending many late nights painting and watching these videos!
Just wanted to say a HUGE thank you for this stormtrooper painting tutorial :-D I've been a painter for over 40 years, and always struggled to get the "shine" on white armour, following so many hints and tips from other painters that just didn't work out. I've just taken on a vast amount of stormtroopers (unwanted by the previous owner) and wanted to use Citadel paints for my project. Your tutorials are amazingly easy to follow, and even for an "Old Hand" like myself, you show so many little tips and techniques that even I learn something new every time I watch them. The tip about painting the base edges of elite units is awe-inspiring, and is one I'll be using myself. I'm hoping somewhere you have a tutorial for painting white robes, too, as I really need help with that, even after all the years I've been in the hobby. Again, thank you, as now I can relax and get on with the job of painting white armour, and an even bigger thank you for the tutorial on painting Imperial Officers :-)
Thanks a lot Todd! I'm glad you're finding my humble videos so useful! I've actually just used quite a simple but effective technique for the white parts of Leoiric's robes in the latest Descent video which you might find helpful.. :)
Paul Todd • 2 months ago I was at the Fleadh (Pronounced Flaah) and am always amazed at how talented young Irish people are at both dancing and playing instruments, even though I HATE Irish Trad music with a passion. I live in Ennis, so the event took over the whole town, but the young 'uns were mind-blowing with their displays.
I am extra amazed now that I've read the credits and found that you wrote the music as well! VERY well done! I'm an amateur composer who has also used EW Quantum Leap, and I had to compliment you on your skilled use.
I just bought the paints for them, though I'm nervous about using a matte varnish, as it has ruined my models in the past. Think I can get away with leaving them as they are?
I just painted my first stormtroopers and as an added extra detail I chose to give one of the elite troopers a red coating on his shoulder pauldron to indicate officer's rank. It really makes it stand out. Thanks for a great guide!
Thanks for these tutorials. I just recently bought Imperial Assault and X-Wing Minis after playing with friends. Hope to add that little extra finesse to these deserving models. I may be a beginner but this seems incredibly easy to follow.
Thanks for the comment! It really isn't that hard to paint to a table-top standard - and they look so much more thematic, even with a basic paint job :)
Hello Sorastro, A big thank you to you because it is your tutorials that decided to paint my figurines of Star Wars "Assault on the Empire". I have just made my first order of Citadel products and I will start very quickly. I hope the result will be good and my goal will be that my figurines look "a bit" like yours. Again thank you for these videos really very useful, perfectly didactic, well mounted and very well sounded. Sorry for my poor English, I'm French! :) I hope that Google will have translated my French into good English and that it will not have misinterpreted my remarks. Continue for a long time to make us dream.
Fantastic video. I have zero experience painting miniatures but feel very confident (not to mention excited) about giving it a try after watching this video! Thank you!
Great tutorial. I paint just one with a different approach. Black base, light grey where it is expected to have white, white drybrush, correction with black or black ink if needed, final white.
Excellent video. I am very new to the hobby and I have been wanting to paint the models since I bought the game. This has given me the motivation and confidence to give it a go. I'm looking forward to seeing you other videos for the other models.
I just discovered your videos Sorastro and I think they're great! I've just recently gotten back into painting miniatures and I sure do wish I had these videos a few years ago - you've helped me paint my best one ever :) I just picked up Imperial Assault so this series will be a big help for sure.
This was jaw dropping and inspiring! Went out and bought some paint (Vallejo) and primer (P3 white), which is great stuff. I'm ready to start painting after letting the primer set in for 24 hours. Thanks for all the great tips and info!
Thanks so much for these videos!! I just finished up painting my first minis ever thanks to this video! They look rough but boy was it a fun process. Thank you so much for making videos that are beginner friendly.
Wow, the recommendations from the algorithm keep digging deeper. Great to see the huge difference your Contrast recipe makes, achieving an arguably better result with a lot less work and/or skill required. 😊 I fondly remember when Nuln Oil was universally hailed as skill in a pot 😂
Good tutorial, you paint as same like me. I have Tau empire and my army is full white with violet areas, and the technic you described in the video are exactly the same I use for them. Also say that painting in white colour is the most tired and dificult for a novice people. But is the most gratificant when you finish the work. Thumbs up¡¡
I may be a little late to the party in discovering your excellent tutorials, but they are amazing. I'm still currently working on the ST set, finishing up the base of each. I knew going into this that I was under taking a tremendous task, but so far it has been very satisfying. Thank you so much for making these as it gives non-artistic types the ability to accomplish something truly amazing.
My son enjoyed the vid he is a 11 and these are the first real models he has painted we look forward to more vids . Thank you Chris and Alex Happy new year
Thanks a lot Mark! I'm glad you found the video helpful! You might like to check out my slightly revised "recipe" for painting stormtroopers in this video also: ua-cam.com/video/In12QLHJxqc/v-deo.html :)
Awesome video. I am relatively new to miniature painting and your videos have been both educational and inspirational. Thank you for sharing your time and expertise.
I've just started painting Imperial Assault. These videos are amazing and they also provide so much content for learning techniques (I'm fairly new). Thank you so much! Subscribed to your channel
Thank you very much! I might humbly suggest that you also look at Star Wars: Legion videos, as I present some of the same characters but with some alternative methods that you might find useful: ua-cam.com/play/PL6xOeNhrVj9vfxBrv5_3q2Dtw9uZTbBli.html :)
hi, i wanted to thank you for making my game more then it was. I started with the stormtroopers and they turned out great. now i just follow the episodes for the rest :)
Hi! Just wanted to say thank you for posting this video series. I'm brand new to mini painting and just painting in general. Your tutorial helped immensely! I just finished my first batch of stormtroopers. They definitely have their flaws but they turned out way better than I expected for a first project. Please keep up the good work! My plan is to paint the rest of my stormtroopers for more practice and then work my way through the rest of your videos. Looking forward to learning more techniques!
Thanks a lot Alain! I'm happy to hear your stormtroopers came out OK; they're not that easy and a bit of a trial to get through! I think you'll really enjoy painting the other minis from the game.. :)
I'm just being picky since I stared at them for so long lol. The troopers actually look pretty decent on the table. Nothing I would be ashamed to use while hosting a campaign! I actually loved the painting process. I found it very relaxing. I'm really looking forward to the future projects. I just picked up a pack of ISB infiltrators and already found myself thinking how the painting process might work.
thanks for the video! I seen this after I have already painted almost all of my figures but this still gives me ideas for the future. I primed mine in black instead of white then painted it white. It does take more coats of white to cover but I think it can look more gridy b/c of the black showing through. also if you go to hobby lobby you can find some really thin brushes there to help with detailing.
I forgot. also if u are playing the game and r painting it helps to paint the whole base a different color with a squad. ie with the storm troopers it is a squad of 3 so the same color for 3 of them, then a different color for another 3. it helps a lot in the game
Thank you for making these videos. I just did my first storm trooper miniature with my starter Army painter set they turned out better than i thought. Only wish the started set had the black ink wash instead of the brown wash.
I'm getting my own copy in a few days and I'm extremely excited about that. I've been painting miniatures for a few months now, but making mostly white figures interesting is something I've struggled for some time. This is amazing video and I'm looking forward to watching next episodes. Both thumbs up!
Another fantastic video. Easy and relatively fast, yet producing a great result. Loved your Zombicide ones and really looking forward to more on Imperial Assault. Keep it up!
So happy I found this series. :) Was a bit tricky tracking down the 3 main brands you use from one supplier in AUSTRALIA :( But if any other Aussies are tuning in, I eventually settled for The Combat Company (online) and now have everything (up to series 5) on its way. :)
Great tutorial. Much more advanced than the approach I took. I just did a white basecoat, painted the gun black and then did a heavy black wash followed by a heavy white drybrush. Not as good a final product, but easier/faster and still produced a pretty decent outcome.
Amazing job! Thank you for taking the time to do these videos. I'd love to see more Star Wars miniatures painted, and miniatures from other series as well. Thank you again, your work is appreciated.
Nice tutorial man! White is a difficult color to paint and you presented it to beginners in a very well organized and easy to understand way. Good job!
Huge thanks for these videos. They took my fear of all the paint work when considering to buy a mini-based game. Now I really look forward to not only play the games, but also paint the minis. I just received IA and am about to start to follow your videos.
Your videos have given me the confidence to finally try miniature painting! Just started doing the stormtroopers today as my first minis to paint, doing 4 at once so that I continue to work while others dry. Unfortunately I think I should have done at least one more layer of primer because I did miss some hard to see bits, was too scared about overcoating it with too many layers!! Going to start the final white aint when the nuln has dried :D
+IncubiAkster Awesome! You are right to take care to avoid over-spraying, even if you have a few missed gaps - you can always paint over them. Good luck with the white highlighting :)
Thanks for the swift reply :-) I've just watched your Zombiecide Black Plague tutorial, and finally found a use for the big tin of Army Painter wash someone gave me a while ago. I LOVE your painting style, and will use a lot of your techniques now, as I normally base coat, light highlight, shade then re-highlight, which is time consuming, and gives the same result as your painting technique. Now I'll use the Army Painter shade, matt varnish and highlight technique. I loved the way you do the blood on the zombies. Much more realistic than I normally manage, as I don't use Tamiya clear paints for anything except jewels/lenses. Thanks again, for showing me so many amazingly simple tips and techniques, that have re-ignited my passion for figure painting. At this rate, I'll spend more time watching your tutorials before returning to my painting table. Time well spent :-D All the best paul
Beautiful! I love how simple you make everything, and it makes complete sense! I tried to use black to detail my stormtroopers and it doesn't look half as good as yours. I think I'm just too conservative about using nuln oil. Watching you completely cover yours at first freaked me out and then I saw the level of detail it gives the figure. Well done sir! You've given me the courage to do so!
Very nice and helpful video. I've never been much into miniatures but FFG got me hooked on X-Wing and when they announced Imperial Assault I knew I'd want that too... For me the only real problem is the fact that I really don't like the unpainted models and have practically no experience in painting them. When my game arrives I'm going to be following these tutorials to the letter. I tip my hat to you sir, keep up the awesome work!
Just watched your Paint Stormtroopers for Star Wars Legion set... and although both are great videos we can see how much you've improved as a film maker and as a painter. :) Bravo sir!
great channel. you do very good work. i've tried these techniques on my figures and while not as good as yours, i'm gonna keep on trying. thanks for all of your hard work.
Hi! I'm one of the designers of IA. Just wanted to say this video is flipping amazing! I can't wait for Ep. 2!
Thank you Sir! What a genuine honor it is for me to receive such feedback as I'm a big fan of Fantasy Flight Games (and Imperial Assault naturally)!
Johnathan.... make more models for us please, I use your models to play EoE AoR and F&D. And sadly currently your model selection is rather limited. Need more options especially for characters. I know those games are meant to go without figures but my group loves seeing figures all painted up and such and it negates any debates about character placement. What made you guys decide to go with selling the pieces as blanks?
ChunkyJo cheap and a fun hobby for painters. There were very few Star Wars figure painting options out there for hobbyists
Jonathan Ying hey, thanks very much for your work on the game. I love it.
I wanted to say this tutorial got me into painting my miniatures! I never thought it would be for me, but after seeing this I just gave it a go. I started with one stormtrooper and reached the wash stage yesterday. The result is really satisfying so far; I can't believe how cool it already looks!

Hi Remi - Thank you so much for the kind words! I was humbled by the response this video had when I made it over a year and a half ago and I am still humbled by such comments today. Thank you for recommending my videos also; it's very much appreciated :)

I came across these videos while i was looking for more info on the game itself.
you got me and my 8 year old son into painting.
It's really giving life to these miniatures...
Thank you so much
That's wonderful! I'm so happy to hear that, thank you 😀
This series is a goldmine! I just finished my first storm trooper and ot came out perfect thanks to this video
Thanks John! I'm glad you found it helpful :)
I am not a "mini gamer" but I have loved getting back into board games in the last few years. I have truly enjoyed several "board games that have mini's" but was never interested in painting them UNTIL I WATCHED THIS VIDEO. I now own a copy of this game and am going to be painting this game. Masterfully done tutorial! Simple yet comprehensive. And your Stormtroopers look fantastic! My copy of Imperial Assault arrives tomorrow. I know exactly what I'll be doing.
Thanks a lot! Enjoy painting your troopers :)
I am an intermediate painter and I have enjoyed watching your videos. They have taught me how to properly use washes and dry brushing.
Thank you Conan; I'm glad you're enjoying my humble videos :)
What an excellent series of tutorials. I am new to the hobby and your videos have proved invaluable to me. Great on all fronts; content, presentation style, and production, making them a joy to watch as well. Looking forward to Ep. 11! :)
Ívar Gunnarsson Thanks a lot Ivar! I'm glad you're enjoying the series :)
I wanted to say that your painting videos are amazing and have provided the spark I needed to get back into a hobby I left many moons ago. So thanks!
+Stuart Wexler Thanks a lot Stuart! I'm always happy to hear my videos have helped someone get back into this wonderful hobby 😀
Gonna dive soon on this... that series was an amazing discovery!!! thanks.
Thanks Arley!
Wow! What a sensational video! My son and I have been interested in miniature painting for awhile. Your video and our new Imperial Assault game are a match made in heaven. Brilliant! Bravo!
Fantastic! What a brilliant way to spend time with your boy :)
My only question is how long they would take to dry between each step.
+Adam Dork Depends on room temperature and humidity but really it's best to just wait it out. While waiting for one to dry I tend to start work on another.
+Mojomancer If you're in a hurry a hair dryer is your best friend. just don't hold it in one place too long and melt the plastic.
+Nathan Fulk Nice one! Hope you enjoy it :)
If it's any comfort, I spent around 30 mins for each storm trooper on this stage :)
Finally, I don't know what brushes you are using, but a good brush can make a big difference here.
Hope this helps - let us know how you get on!
Sorastro's Painting
Thank you so much for the response.
@@linkman214 I have much the same issues as you I only have my first white layer down. How well did you fare?
Army painter all the way. Remember, you get what you pay for. Excellent channel. I've been painting 25 years & this channel has taught me a lot.
Thanks a lot for the comment!
Who are the three sad people who thumbed this down!?! "I didn't like where he applied his battle damage!" "I didn't care for the brand of cardboard box he used for his priming!" "There were too many people gives this a thumbs up so I had to balance the tables." SMH.
Lol Tim :)
+Tim Emmerson HaHaHa. I thought the same thing. Why would possible "thumb down" this video. Its fantastic. I choose to think they hit the wrong icon and didn't know they could switch their vote.
+Tim Emmerson People who tried it but have the fine motor skills of a Blue Whale.
Hey! You leave Blue Whales alone!
I'm gonna say it's because there are other methods, perhaps quicker.
Thank you so much for doing this series!!! I haven't picked up a brush and painted a miniature in over 20 years, but you've helped bring me back, and exceed my own meager talents. You are definitely helping many of us up our games!!!
Thanks a lot for the comment Chad! I'm very happy to hear how helpful you've found the videos :)
My pleasure! I'm looking very forward to seeing everything else and learning how to do more!
"Not going to win any awards"? I beg to differ, sir! ;)
+afrose71 Thank you! :)
I agree
I just recently started playing Imperial Assault and have been wanting to paint the figures for that extra dynamic to to game. I’ve never done any miniature painting and found this tutorial absolutely amazing. My troopers turned out fantastic! Thanks!
Thanks Sean! I'm very happy to hear that :)
Never tried painting anything before and this was a FANTASTIC first step - wonderful guide, thank you! Letting the wash dry now and they already look great!
Thank you Kurious George! You've got the tricky part coming up next then.. remember not to overload your brush when you work on those highlights :)
I've never painted before, but couldn't stand all the grey figures for this game so decided to get into it. These tutorials are A+++. Your soothing narration rivals Bob Ross, lol.
Thanks a lot Travis! :)
Thank you so much! Please don’t stop.
I’ve been playing Xwing for a while and it’s got me into board gaming. I really wanted IA but didn’t have the people to play it. Now the support App came out I asked my wife it for Christmas.
What I didn’t ask for was for her to quietly listen to me talking about how cool the game was and I wanted to paint it up like this guy (showing her your video)
Christmas Day comes and she not only bought me the game but a whole painters starter set from your video that she studied several times as the hours dwindled in the office nearing Christmas Day.
Thank you for the positive feedback Captain! Much appreciated :)
Mathew Allen Im a begginer too, how much time does it took you to paint the whole 9 stormtroopers?
+i13thDuke Fantastic! I can foresee some quality father-son time coming up :)
These panting tutorials are so good I have shared it with my friends and board game group who like imperial assault and want to paint those models fantastic work clear instructions good video quality outstanding.
Thank you for the kind feedback! I really appreciate that 😀
Used to paint frequently (Warhammer) but haven't done so in ages, you have just inspired me. Thank you.
Thanks for the comment Alex! I also grew up on Warhammer :)
I just finished the stormtroopers with the help of your instruction. I'm very proud that i could paint this way! Thanks
+Tim Broeren Fantastic Tim! There's no turning back now :)
+Tim Broeren Fantastic Tim! There's no turning back now :)
Just received my Imperial Assault game for X-Mas and I was looking for a hobby for the last couple of years. That amazing video might have gave me the answer!!! Thanks can't wait to go shopping for some painting items!
Thanks Francois! Awesome present! I hope you enjoy your first steps into the wonderful world of miniature painting :)
+aikicin Thank you aikicin! I'm glad you're happy with the videos; good luck with your painting adventures!
Great job!
Thank you very much Bryan! I'm glad you find the video easy to follow :)
You did a hell of a service for newcomers here Sora. Thank you, for the whole community.
Thank you so much Kevin! :)
I am hooked! I have never painted before, but want to paint my Imperial Assault set. Please keep these tutorials coming!!
Thank you! The tutorials are coming slowly but surely :)
Thanks so much William! I really appreciate the kind feedback :)
I managed this first try. First time ever painted miniatures and I am very satisfied with the result. One comment here would be - the stands you need to each outline with a color because you also need to tell the standard squads apart when playing the game.
Fantastic video series, completely sold me on miniature painting as a hobby
Thanks a lot Igor! I'm pleased to hear that :)
New to IA and painting minis. This videos series is amazing and I've just finished painting my storm troopers following your guide. Lots to learn still but turned out better than I imagined they would!
That's awesome Adam! Thank you so much 😀
Nice Tutorial, I am going to try it out. As a more senior painter, my hand is not quite as steady as it used to be . So these technics you show are right up my street.
Thank you jaguar834! I'm not the best painter in the world myself so try to find the easiest ways to get things done :)
I did my own storm troopers today and I have to say following this tutorial I am so happy with the results. I think I used too much nuln oil though so my troopers look really gritty. all and all this has been my favorite and best attempt at mini painting and it is all thanks to this video series.
Thanks a lot Nick! Stormtroopers aren't east to paint so well done! :)
So happy I found this! You really should put Imperial Assault in the title, it will help people find these fantastic tutorials! Thanks so much for doing this.
Thank you! I might do as you suggest (if it doesn't make the title too long?!)
This was very well written and put together. Excellent painting too! Simple, yet effective with a good use of washes.
Tomi N. Thanks Tomi! Glad you like it :)
Great job. I really like the outline at the beginning that shows the model in its stages.
Bryce Bigelow Thank you Bryce! The stages montage is a bit of a pain to do so I'm glad you like it :)
I've never tried to paint my minis but you've given me the confidence to try. Thanks.
Thanks Brian! Before tackling the stormtroopers you might like to watch Ep.30 which makes things a little easier.. :)
Fantastic tutorial.. Manage to paint my first storm trooper yesterday. Could not have done it without this guide. Thank you :)
+Martin Svarrer Christensen Awesome Martin! Thanks for the comment :)
I just started painting my set thanks to your video tutorials. I am my third Stormtrooper in and I gotta say, you make this look so much easier than it actually is! Those small details are killer!
Yep the stormtroopers aren't especially easy but are a great way of practising brush control and thinning :)
I've never been much of an artist or a painter, but I really want to get into IA. I'd been worried about painting minis, but you really made this look much less difficult than I thought it was. looking forward to spending many late nights painting and watching these videos!
+Jacob Lovegren Thanks Jacob! Go for it :)
Just wanted to say a HUGE thank you for this stormtrooper painting tutorial :-D
I've been a painter for over 40 years, and always struggled to get the "shine" on white armour, following so many hints and tips from other painters that just didn't work out.
mine turned out really well. i followed the guide exactly and im super happy with the way they turned out
Excellent! I'm glad your stormtroopers turned out well :)

I was at the Fleadh (Pronounced Flaah) and am always amazed at how talented young Irish people are at both dancing and playing instruments, even though I HATE Irish Trad music with a passion.
Thanks a lot Scott! I do love the EastWest instruments.. I really appreciate the compliment :)
Superb tutorial, I was undecided on buying the game but now I have this guide really looking forward to painting up the figures. Much appreciated
Thanks Richard!
my copy just came in the mail last night. Using these guides to paint my own copy, AWESOME techniques and perfect results! :D
Thanks a lot Matt! Hope you have fun painting your minis up! :)
Excellent Martin! :D
Great tutorial. I know I wanted to paint my minis but I didn't know where to start. This gave me a very clear and easy plan. Thank you for doing this.
Thanks Jim! You're welcome :)
Love your tutorials, thorough, precise, and easy to follow. THANK YOU
Thank you Jason!
Hello Sorastro,
A big thank you to you because it is your tutorials that decided to paint my figurines of Star Wars "Assault on the Empire".
Hi Cyril! Thanks for the kind comment! I can understand you perfectly and I really appreciate the kind words :)
Fantastic video. I have zero experience painting miniatures but feel very confident (not to mention excited) about giving it a try after watching this video! Thank you!
Thanks Ant! Go for it :)
Ant Romano I feel the same way! Going to look for Citadel paint as soon as I get my Imperial Assault copy :P
Honestly the best painting tutorial I have ever seen. Simple, but inspiring.
Tab Oberheu Thank you Tab! I appreciate the comment :)
These are such wonderful videos. Please keep going with them until the set is done!
I just discovered your videos Sorastro and I think they're great! I've just recently gotten back into painting miniatures and I sure do wish I had these videos a few years ago - you've helped me paint my best one ever :) I just picked up Imperial Assault so this series will be a big help for sure.
Thanks a lot Bobby! I'm happy to hear your painting has improved and that you're enjoying the hobby again! :)
This was jaw dropping and inspiring! Went out and bought some paint (Vallejo) and primer (P3 white), which is great stuff. I'm ready to start painting after letting the primer set in for 24 hours. Thanks for all the great tips and info!
Thanks Robert - I'm sure your minis will turn out great :)
Thanks so much for these videos!! I just finished up painting my first minis ever thanks to this video! They look rough but boy was it a fun process. Thank you so much for making videos that are beginner friendly.
That's awesome - thanks Jacob! 😀
Incredible work and guide! We appreciate your videos and looking forward to more of these magnificent Star Wars guides.
Thank you! It's a shame my actual job eats up so much of my time :)
Sorastro's Painting That's my problem too, so you're not alone! :)
Really terrific work, both painting instruction and production value.
Thank you very much! I appreciate the feedback :)
Wow, the recommendations from the algorithm keep digging deeper. Great to see the huge difference your Contrast recipe makes, achieving an arguably better result with a lot less work and/or skill required. 😊
I fondly remember when Nuln Oil was universally hailed as skill in a pot 😂
Lol, I can't believe YT is throwing this old thing up again... lol :)
Good tutorial, you paint as same like me. I have Tau empire and my army is full white with violet areas, and the technic you described in the video are exactly the same I use for them. Also say that painting in white colour is the most tired and dificult for a novice people. But is the most gratificant when you finish the work. Thumbs up¡¡
Thanks a lot Raymon! :)
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that, and I'm glad you're enjoying the videos! :)
My son enjoyed the vid he is a 11 and these are the first real models he has painted we look forward to more vids
. Thank you Chris and Alex Happy new year
Thank you sir! Your son is very lucky to have a dad who's into miniature gaming; What a great thing to share! Happy New Year to you both :)
So cool - i was really keen to find an beginner level/introductory painting instuctional and this has done that in spades - thanks a lot.
Thank you so much Bill. It's comments like this that inspire me in turn.
@@Sorastro will definitely do. Thank you!
hi, i wanted to thank you for making my game more then it was. I started with the stormtroopers and they turned out great. now i just follow the episodes for the rest :)
Thanks a lot Joris! I'm very happy to hear that :)
It's nice to see a tutorial using paints I actually have.
Looks good.
Thanks :)
Hi Carson! Thanks for the useful tips and suggestions :)
Thank you for making these videos. I just did my first storm trooper miniature with my starter Army painter set they turned out better than i thought. Only wish the started set had the black ink wash instead of the brown wash.
Just bought everything I need. A little nervous but like everyone else, you have inspired me sir!!! Thanks and here goes nothing...
keifaleif Go for it!
I'm getting my own copy in a few days and I'm extremely excited about that. I've been painting miniatures for a few months now, but making mostly white figures interesting is something I've struggled for some time. This is amazing video and I'm looking forward to watching next episodes. Both thumbs up!
Thank you very much Marek! I'm glad you found the video helpful - good luck with your troopers :)
Another fantastic video. Easy and relatively fast, yet producing a great result. Loved your Zombicide ones and really looking forward to more on Imperial Assault. Keep it up!
Thank you very much!
I got the game yesterday and I‘ll start to paint the miniatures today... I hope it will look nice.
Awesome! I'm sure they'll turn it great 😀
Sorastro, you are one seriously awesome dude! I'm just sad I hadn't found your channel sooner!!
Thank you very much!
So happy I found this series. :)
Was a bit tricky tracking down the 3 main brands you use from one supplier in AUSTRALIA :(
But if any other Aussies are tuning in, I eventually settled for The Combat Company (online) and now have everything (up to series 5) on its way. :)
Thanks Paul! I'm glad you found a supplier; Where would we be without the internet eh!?
Great tutorial. Much more advanced than the approach I took. I just did a white basecoat, painted the gun black and then did a heavy black wash followed by a heavy white drybrush. Not as good a final product, but easier/faster and still produced a pretty decent outcome.
+Philip Genever-Watling Cool Philip! Just getting them painted up and on the table is what it's about :)
Amazing job! Thank you for taking the time to do these videos. I'd love to see more Star Wars miniatures painted, and miniatures from other series as well. Thank you again, your work is appreciated.
Thank you very much Corbin! It is nice to feel appreciated :)
Yay, bud. I know you've been busy but really looking forward to start painting again
Just got some paints, and I'm very excited to start getting these done!
+subtrendy Woohoo! Have fun :)
Nice tutorial man! White is a difficult color to paint and you presented it to beginners in a very well organized and easy to understand way. Good job!
jawaballs Thank you jawaballs! I really appreciate the compliment :)
Huge thanks for these videos. They took my fear of all the paint work when considering to buy a mini-based game. Now I really look forward to not only play the games, but also paint the minis. I just received IA and am about to start to follow your videos.
Thanks a lot Thaine! I hope you enjoy the journey.. :)
Very well done! I've been out of the painting world for a spell, this was a nice reacquaint with the hobby. Thanks!!
chibifozz Thanks for the comment! (And welcome back to the dark side :) )
Thanks for the swift reply :-)
I've just watched your Zombiecide Black Plague tutorial, and finally found a use for the big tin of Army Painter wash someone gave me a while ago.
Time well spent :-D
All the best
paul
You're very welcome Paul! Thanks again for the glowing comments :)
Thank you so much Sorastro! I had a blast painting my Stormtroopers today and your video helped me a lot!
Awesome! Thanks Juxe - I'm glad you enjoyed them; just think how much you're going to enjoy painting something with color! :)
Thanks for commenting Jamerson! That's one of the good things about mini painting: There's very little that can't be fixed or re-done :)
Thank you very much for the kind comments! FFG sure did a great job with X-Wing, and now IA - a dream come true for nerds like us :)
Just watched your Paint Stormtroopers for Star Wars Legion set... and although both are great videos we can see how much you've improved as a film maker and as a painter. :) Bravo sir!
Thank you LeeGinSing! I really appreciate that :)
great channel. you do very good work. i've tried these techniques on my figures and while not as good as yours, i'm gonna keep on trying. thanks for all of your hard work.
Thanks a lot CthulhuChow! I'm sure you'll improve with every mini you paint (like the rest of us) :)
+Sorastro's Painting i like to wash my figs before painting them. do you have any suggestions on what to wash them with/in?
