I don’t know why but Nancy’s letter at the end of last train to blue moon canyon ALWAYS makes me cry, the concept about friendship being the most valuable treasure never fails to make me tear up.

It isn't an exact moment, but when we hear about what happened to Kasumi in shadow at the water's edge from Miwako, Yumi, and Takae. Yumi, at 15, having to discover her mother's dead body, Takae's guilt about her selfish actions leading to her daughter's death, and Miwako describing how they were all there the night she died and how no one helped her. I have a terrible fear of my loved ones dying in sudden and seemingly benign ways, like falling down the stairs and hitting your head (yay for anxiety), so the idea of Kasumi dying like that, alone and unexpectedly, and how each family member remembered it just breaks my heart 💔

But what about Pa? In denial and pretending that Ma is still around until Nancy keeps poking at him until he breaks down. That was so sad to me.
Also Joy’s story in Haunted Carousel was really sad too. How she was so unhappy after her mother died and her father did everything he could possibly do to cheer her up. Ughh I’m crying just thinking about it.
And Joseph in the final scene. Without the royal palladium he had nothing. He was nobody. He had no one who loved him and no place to go. That really got to me as a kid playing these games.

And why doesn’t Nancy even try to console Henry later, or give him the crypt key so he can go inside, or let him know she found the missing painting and put it back where it goes? I realize those things wouldn’t progress the mystery but it seems so cold for Nancy to act like that!

This is such a lovely video. Julius McQuade's journal always makes me cry... Seeing how he and Isis became each other's whole worlds and knowing he was worried about going to the hospital because she wouldn't understand where/why he'd gone, then realizing he never made it back to her. (And then I tear up again at the shot of her happy face at the very end when she goes to the sanctuary, lol.)The "even bad memories have a place in a good life" bit in CAR always gets me too. I think that was the only time I've been compelled to write a quote down in my notebook that wasn't puzzle-related.

I think that it's not just the letter Kate writes to Nancy in SPY that's tear inducing; it's the letter Nancy writes to Kate in the end, and the conversation Nancy and Carson have about Kate in the end credits. All of that combined together made me literally, genuinely, tear up by the end of the game.
Another one that's super sad for me:
Pa's little monologue about how tornadoes take everything from you and there's nothing you can do to stop it and then it's just gone is horribly sad, made worse by Nancy continuing to ask where Ma is even after reading the newspaper about her death.

Personally I think learning what happens to Fiona in Haunting of Castle Malloy, when she’s so SO young and she loses her parents to an accident, living in the bog with a hermit woman, having no contact with the outside world, it breaks your heart!
Also Soren’s treatment by the people who SHOULD be welcoming him, but just because he was born 10 miles away from Skipbrot, he’s labeled an outsider, a villain, and he becomes that which people have labeled him, simply for not being “one of us”

I was always confused by Soren. He didn’t have an accent like he was born 10 miles away. He sounded American. I interpreted it on my play throughs as he was born ten miles away but raised way, way far away and has lost his Icelandic identity. Or that he reclaimed that identity because he studied ancient swords in college in the US but didn’t truly understand the people there today.
Like when my brother who was born in New Orleans but moved at 2.5 years old gets a Saints tattoo and makes it his whole identity. He has no memory of the place and has never been there as an adult. They would roll their eyes at him too, just like I do, but deep down it’s kind of sad when someone feels so rootless that they kind of adopt a whole culture like that.

All of the moments that you chose in this video are definitely what I consider the most heartbreaking moments in the Nancy Drew games. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
While I think many of us always felt sympathy for Nancy for losing her mother, I think things intensified by the time of The Silent Spy, mainly when we discover the letter that Kate left for Nancy, since it's set up like she knew she was going to die and left this letter as a final parting message to Nancy. 😔😢😭 Kate would be very proud of the young woman Nancy has become, and I can't help but wonder if Kate's past career as a spy was the unknowing inspiration for Nancy to become a detective.
I completely agree with you about the voice-over narration of Meryl Humber as Nancy reads the pages of his diary. I always noticed how his voice constantly shifts based on the emotions he is feeling as he discusses the events in his life, from being happy over his close relationship with Frances to his anger at discovering that her boyfriend Dirk is an outlaw to grief that Frances has cut ties with him since leaving the ranch one year ago, just one day after Dirk was hanged.
Yes, when Nancy discovers Ezra's study in the library and the mementos that reveal he was Dexter's adoptive father, most especially the poem Ezra left for Dexter, makes it a very brilliant moment that induces tears because of the complete lack of dialogue.
Hearing Harper talk about Charlotte that way is tear-inducing, but even more so when you realize that Charlotte was a beloved member of the Thornton family, both by relatives and townspeople. Harper loved and admired Charlotte very much, and so she was completely devastated when Charlotte was killed, especially because the girls had already lost both of their parents, and so now with Charlotte's death, Harper had lost the last of her family. 😭😭😭
Now I don't disagree with your choices and your reasons for their ranks, because I think all of them are that saddening, and I do feel sympathy for Henry because he lost his parents at a young age and grew up feeling lost and unwanted because he thought Bruno had no feelings of love or care for him whatsoever. But the drowning of Gunnar's wife and daughter is the moment that breaks my heart the most. 😔😢😭 I feel more sadness for Gunnar because he is an old man who has lost his entire family and now he is all alone. That explains why he is so grouchy, because the grief of losing a loved one can make people so angry and bitter, especially if they had ties to whatever caused the loved ones to die. Gunnar was the sole survivor of the boating accident in which his family drowned, and so of course he feels guilt that he's the only survivor.
As for moments you didn't mention in this video, I think what happened to Fiona Malloy with losing her parents in the explosion, growing up in the bog with an old hermit, and growing up in isolation with no other human contact, and Miwako and Yumi losing their mother are also very sad, heartbreaking moments from the series.

I never really cried while playing the games, but the saddest part for me other than the poor Henry scene, was when she first learns why max is gone in trail of the twister. Henry and Gunnar really got me. Completely changed my opinion on Gunnar, which was the idea. I lost my parents earlier than most do, so Henry really got to me and was so real. • @pinkjaguar12
    @pinkjaguar12 Рік тому

Late to the game here, but a storyline that's always hit me hard is Joseph in The Final Scene. Yes, he's the villain, and yes, he's actively trying to (indirectly) murder both Maya and Nancy. But it's so painfully obvious that he isn't in his right mind anymore. All of the heartbreak he's been feeling from the impending destruction of the one place he truly calls home nowadays pushed him over the brink, and his age and ill health probably didn't help either. When Nancy talks with him in the endgame and tries to reason with him, it's clear that he just doesn't understand the reality of the situation anymore. He's always been such a sympathetic villain to me, and I really hope that he ended up getting the care and treatment that he needed.

I just re-watched your play through of Shadow Ranch and that whole story just guts me. I can see both sides of the story from the parent and as the young woman getting her first taste of love. How betrayed she felt and how utterly devastated she was. Then from her father's perspective: he knows that Dirk's lifestyle was not good and that it would be hard for Dirk to break away from it and therefore put his daughter in constant danger. He knew that eventually she'd get married and he'd loose her, but the fact that his own actions caused him to loose her even faster and in totality was gut wrenching. Also Sea of Darkness. In my opinion, it's one of the few times that an unlikeable character has an actual reason for his/her disposition and it can make me see past their temper or attitude. When I first played it, I thought Gunter was just like Holt in Danger on Deception Island and I was disappointed that they were recycling a character but then his whole story came out and all the feels came out too. Thanks for sharing this!

Regrettably, I have to disagree on your number one. Honestly--and I hate saying this--I always found that moment unintentionally funny. Something about the editing just never worked for me; it passes by too quickly to make the emotional impact that it should have. For me the biggest emotional punches are: Kate's letter, the Shadow Ranch diary/the love story overall, Gunner's box (this would probably be my number one for the all too real emotional ache it leaves you with), Harper's quote about Charlotte, Ned's sad pause in SEA if you don't say that you love him back, and realizing what happened to the "banshee" in Castle Malloy. That last one is DARK and disturbing, especially if you've taken the time to learn about cases of feral and neglected children.

Shadow Ranch wasn't as good as it should have been for me, just because I ended up not liking Frances Humber very much. The very idea that she'd disown her own father for not letting a wanted criminal go free made her look incredibly selfish. Meryl didn't even convict him, just brought him in for trial. And then he ends up talking as if he did something wrong instead of her.
I know they tried to talk around it by saying that Dirk never used his gun and never stole from anyone who didn't deserve it, et cetera, but it's not good enough, assuming it's even true at all. If he'd been innocent, that might have been different.
