- So many people talk about this technique as if it is a negative, but I'm here to tell you WHY it's actually beneficial, and what mastering it can unlock.

the fighting game technique even champions haven't mastered: playing on 3ds
I actually played street fighter 4 on the 3ds xD
I miss playing street fighter on my 3ds 😂
When I was first getting into fighting games, I got 3ds street fighter 4 and I went online and a guy did actual el fuerte combos on me. This it didnt mean anything to me at the time, but it came back to me today and I realized how messed up it is that he did that on a 3ds.
@@zaedis5629 considering that the 3DS has macros for specials it couldn't have been that hard.
Guile was walking forward and Booming. That’s cheap af

Charge becomes second nature once you get used to it. You'll automatically know if you have charge for something or not. Also, the charge time is so lenient that you will have access to you specials in all of your combos. The real culprit that people should be rallying against is mash inputs.
i swear mash inputs feel so inconsistent
By mash inputs, do you mean Chun Li's kicks, Honda's 1000 hand slap, and Blanka's electricity? Or something else?
@@BadlndsBob Yeah I mean mash input specials. I also hate negative edge specials like Birdies Bullhorn and Falke's Kugel.
There's a guy called nightmare effect
Plays balrog
He did a video about it recently
Mashing should never be a required skill at all.
I think those moves is what gave fighting games the reputation of button mashing games in the early era.
KOF XIII has the ultimate examples of how bad it can get, for reference see Joe trials
Simply noticing Brian_F being a fan of J. Kenji-Lopez Alt has improved my day.
Everyone's a fan of Kenji.
Having to mentally manage charge time stresses me out so I stay away from charge characters I'll just stick to motion inputs so I can move around in peace without worrying about losing access to moves.
same for negative edge 😞
I'm a main Balrog, level 30 something with bison, i've played chun, necalli and urien.
And yet, here i am, watching a video about charge moves, just because i love Brian.
I mean, love Brian's content, its not like i watch his channel just because he's hot or smth...
Love brain.. thats pretty sus man..

Every single time
Just today, I was thinking about how charge characters were originally designed to be easier and laughing.
Yes inputting sonic boom is easier than inputing hadouken IF you don't have to worry about anything else but that's about it.
Charging was hard to initially implement into my play, but after a while a charge move is just another move
Charge moves come out faster on reaction is the fun part. Anti airing with charge on board is so much easier than plonking out a full dp. I just hate down down moves they take me longer th an anything else.
Or they just fail and you end up jump kicking.
commenting for the algorithm! never took the time to learn a charge character, but this video made me wanna give it another shot
"Charge is holding him back"
Actually, charge is you holding back (or down or down back) so yeah they're literally wrong.
Pun aside, I started playing charge characters a couple years ago thx to you and your Balrog, and never once regreted the journey, thanks for the inspiration and the amazing content !
Take my upvote and get out.
I did not even know Oro was a charge Character.
I really like this video! gave me some confidence. charge mostly scares me within combos but really that's secondary to being able to use it in neutral and once in a combo off hitconfirms anyway. great stuff!
Feel like this was a blessing since I asked shit bout charge partitioning in the comments a while back. Ty Brian
Thank you Brian you taught me a new advanced tech with a charge character i am now able to connect standing l.p into spinning bird kick which is crazy I thought it was impossible but you showed me how to do it Thank you
Always was interested in charge characters but sampling any in combo trials scared me away. This helps!
Button Box is OD for charge characters though. I play Guile on keyboard and binding jump to space makes flashkick juggles easier.
guile on keyboard? how about the super on keyboard?
@@canobenitez What do you mean?
@@prachetasnayse9709 its fukin hard (I mean Guile)
@@canobenitez Oh no, its really not. Keyboard primarily acts as a button box. You can cancel your flash kick into super easily. You just have to do it really fast.
I honestly thought this would be about FADC from SF4 but this surprised me and gave me a new perspective on charge as a whole. Neat!
Wow Brian just picked up sfv and started trying to learn guile, it's still really hard but this is giving me more motivation to stick with him
It's also good to know that doing the special moves for most charge characters isn't always the end-all be-all. Charge characters normally come with pretty good/long normals/command normals too and should relied on to help them out in neutral.
It's hard for me to think that people would have trouble with charge characters sometimes. I used to think they were the "easier" alternative to normal motions and one of the main reason I gravitated to that archetype when I was first learning fighting games (I was bad at most motions outside of churning butter for grapplers). That just goes to show how relative difficulty can be with things sometimes.
I seem to remember, from Guile's trial combos, that you sometimes have to release your charge as late as possible in order to build enough to do the move.
Been a guile and M. Bison main since SF2 turbo edition and SF4. Charge characters are definitely worth learning. Even if you’re just bored of shotos, grapplers and puppeteers. The hand eye coordination required may not
Be more difficult but it does feel like a whole new game.
the most important thing to know is the ABCs -- always be charging, always
doing a forward jump? start holding down+back in mid air, always be charging
blocking? good, always be charging
doing a normal? a lot of attacks will come out just fine if you're also holding back, and after the attack comes out, you can even hold down, always be charging, and if you intended to go for a sweep, you're charging down during that
charge is only annoying for me if the charge time is close to a whole second, I get super impatient
in most SNK games with charge moves and in Guilty Gear, charge times are really short, so it's never felt like a problem there (I play May in Strive, and I don't usually tend towards charge characters)
when I'm playing Dictator or Guile in SF2CE though, it feels like I have to count to two before anything comes out lol (even if it's supposed to be just a 60 frame charge), I can't play nearly as fast as I see other people play

Yesterday i went back to USFIV. And lemme tell you,i tried ultra trials. Ultra trial Blanka 24 is the hardest trial in the entire game in my opinion. He has this link from crouching medium kick into ultra. You gotta do it after a normal combo into a red focus, which means, charge and wait but not too long because then the cr Mk might hit them when they no longer stay in the ground, and THEN,with maybe enough luck and having waited and pressed back after the red focus dash forward fast enough, you might get a chance of the ultra coming out after the cr Mk,that done over and over until you miraculously connect both. I feel like in that case with those sort of combos a fireball input would be more convenient.
TLDR:yeah, charge combos can be trickier to some people, plus different games have different charge times which messes you up a bit, also cross-ups take your left/righy charge which is objectively a disadvantage compared to fireball/Z motion characters, but then again charge moves require a much simpler input(plus what brian said about the DOWN charge, ironically overwhelming the disadvantage lol). All in all, preference. Though Brian’s examples are much more clear and establish better the different in between charge and not charge.
Edit: 9:35 tbh i can’t anti-air on reaction with dp characters lol,so i feel that.
Big brain idea: have your moves be reverse Shoryuken and QCB inputs. No need to charge, so you still have the mobility, but because they both have you move the stick backwards, you can not press the button if you need to block.
brian it would really help to have a camera on your hand and arcade stick ! i really have a hard time visualising the charge stick movements ! ty ! awesome vid, sup[er helpful !!!
Man, I got all kinds of reasons why I think charge moves are frustrating but you are absolutely correct about the flash kick argument. As an analogy, my main in Guilty Gear strive is Leo Whitefang and his ONLY charge move is a flash kick/DP. The rest are motion inputs.
But my biggest issue with charge motion is that if you mess up the input it can be hard to tell if the mistake was on charge timing or the motion to the opposite direction. I play on pad so that might have to do with it. If I move the pad straight left to right, sometimes a up input gets fat fingered by my thumb and my character is in the the air.
alex was my intro to charge
bison solidified my likeness for charge
I'm getting used to charge characters, but my issue is telegraphing my charges and not keeping my momentum up. This video is very helpful and identified a lot of my issues.
Hey Brian, an old video of yours (where you talk about salt from a year ago), you tell a story of how you curb stomped your first stick sort of resonated with me.
Well, more so got me thinking.
I’m pretty young and relatively new to the fgc (at least on a level above pure casual), but I feel like my parents don’t enjoy me playing fighting games, granted I used to get very, very salty but I’ve definitely gotten better.
Yet, whenever I jump on street fighter, even between matches and I’m just chilling, my parents still get really annoyed.
A specific time that sticks in my memory is when they saw me playing SFV and asked me “why do you enjoy going online and beating people up?” In an angry/sarcastic tone.
My parents didn’t grow up playing games of any kind, so I can semi-understand where it comes from, but I still feel like whenever I try to tell them anything regarding it they shut it down, I’ve had to find my own way to locals since I’m too young to have a license.
Do you have any tips or advice of what I can do? Because I’m stumped.
P.s they’re great parents btw, and they support me fully on everything else, it’s just this one hobby that they completely shut down.
The small window of charge being available can really lead to such satisfying combos - Guile LK into flash kick, microwalk flash kicks, Oro f.MP into DP, Urien headbutt loops... It's definitely one of the reasons why I personally really enjoy charge characters
Behind the shoulder mode on 3DS was way too funny
4:52 Capcom made a Guile without charge -- they called him Nash! He has changed a lot, but, that's who he is.
a charge fireball can also be good for baiting your opponent. Walking back and doing nothing can be a great way to make someone jump if they know you have to charge to do the move.
I got top 3 in hoop cup a few times because of Alex block strings starting low into sand mp to Head butt so fucking fun a silly. feels so cool like you're breaking the rules
Charge always felt more comfortable to me, I still struggle with DP motions sometimes but a flash kick is so easy to do on reaction
Same for me. It just feels more natural since you have to hold back to block anyways. Even with the shortcuts I still struggle with dps too
I mainly play charge Claw in Season 1,Guile Season 2 Boxer after that. It messed me up when they gave Boxer motion controls but you kinds have to have motion controls in this game because
the shimmy tactics and crush counter conversations are needed to win.
I straight up thought urien was a motion character for years because I thought his headbutt loops would be impossible with charge moves, only found out the truth in 2021
Brain i never known you to throw the shade...wow
Showing charge characters love! Me likey!
Professor Brian comes back at us with a great lesson!
I will give charge characters a shot, once I have the chance.
Alright, i will play may from now on
*Meanwhile Ed and Falke:* "Pathetic!"
In 2d fighters, I more or less play charge characters exclusively - plus the occasional grappler. It just feels so much better to execute stuff. I mean mostly 90s fighters, not SFV which doesn't even have charge input supers (for anyone but Guile, anyway).
charge supers make me cry
Charge supers feel like such a crapshoot
@@tootsie_ especially ones with Delta inputs (like Guile’s old Flash Kick super). Hold down back, down forward, then down back into up forward.
nailing flash kick to super online is such a drug
Grapplers who are also charge characters are where the real fun is
If you want to try a different game then give Vatista in Under Night a shot, best charge character I've ever played. So much fun
My favorite characters are charge. So, when you charge is that stocked or do you have to use it. Because I dont know how to combo. I press db, but when i press F and P. Sometimes it doesnt come out.
I love how charge feels, but I hate the mobility restriction.
It's really interesting when I hear people say charge characters are more difficult because for me it's entirely the opposite. Charge characters' special moves are so much easier to pull off. I find the downsides of charging much more bearable than the downsides of motion inputs (bigger mental stack and input risk).
I picked a charge character because I couldn't do DPs, and I learned the only bad thing about doing it on a controller is there's no notch for down-back. So many times I think I'm holding it but I'm only actually holding down and then I get hit.
Pog upload?? Brian
Is there any use for balrog do to micro walk dash punches?
As a may player in strive yes.
5:07 Even Desk wouldn't able to pull THAT off!
I remember super street fighter 4! Guile, Balrog, and chin-li you could hold back and down to have a crouch and back charge. You would hold focus to absorbs one hit dash forward to cancel the focus. Then do your second back, then forward. So literally ->, . And you could dash cancel out of focus into ultra. Very hard to do online with even minimal lag. But, it was an answer to the shotos. Focus dash in to full screen ultra 🙄🙄🙄
Some people have an easier time learning charge motions than the other motion inputs and vice versa
Nash sfa2 is the only charge character i use, and i love him
I’ve only played charge characters in 4 so I’ve always been good at charge moves and even the two charge ultra notations. I actually struggled with motion characters more
charging mid combos is still a difficult concept. I've conquered my fear by learning DeeJay in SF6 and I'm having a lot of fun. I just need to get a hang of those Shenanigans Fuudo & Xian pulls off.
wasn't there a way to dash and still get a charge move after dashing or is that not in 5
i swear it was in one of the sf games
When I first started playing SFV I wanted to main Bison because he's my absolute favorite character in the franchise but I just couldn't get down the charge inputs. I would practice the combos, do all of his trials, think I have it down, then randomly lose my charge and drop my combos because I forgot to keep holding back. I'm glad I kept at it though because it has become second nature at this point and it honestly feels more comfortable to me than playing motion characters.
Qcf supers have a shcrt cut which makes it similar to charging inputs... it's the sfv book.
Bro i thought u was alone, i have never been able to do charge moves
I could never do a standing anything into a charge move. Couldn’t quite get the timing down
Awesome video. He needs to make more like this. Thank God he didn't use the Boxer again.
Ah yes. Brian all UA-camr mode giving a PhD presentation about charge, meanwhile twitch chat wanting to watch the related videos. Never change twitch chat, never change.
can't believe I comment about having to play ed cause he's the only non charge boxer on yesterdays video, only to get this video today
once you get the timing of charge pretty much like once get the lowchart it take me time get used to at first honda headbutt crosscut but it worth it just don,t ex headbutt some moves like sakura jumping lk will pass through but guile good dealing anti air or whatever to stop the gap or blockstring so on of holding down .
One of the most basic things I can tell anyone is if you happen to be going for a jump in, just immediatepy start holding back/down the instant you jump, and if you're going for a cross up then hold the opposite down/diagonal direction so you start the charge as soon as you get over them
4:04 charge move exists to limit how you use it
May in Strive: Isn't it just straight forward to hold back then TOTSUGEKI?
0:05 Hi Twitch!
I’m a charge player (I main Honda), but I think the charge specials are much harder than the fireball characters. Back forward back forward has a much higher margin for error on a joystick or game pad. On a hit box, it’s a different story. Charge characters on a hit box are way easier.
¿How do i get enough ingame courrency to buy characters?
I'm glad more people are being guided to the sick nasty world of sf4 3ds
Coming back to this video... tryng to play dee jay in sf6... only ever mained shoto...it's so hard to charge for me
what makes guile's fireball good?
A long time ago I found a used copy of SF4 for the 3ds, but sadly I was too young and didn't have my own money to buy it. What kind of different person would I be if I had found that instead of smash first
How funny. Recently, I was playing Super SF4 on my 3ds.
I am only good with charge characters. I cant do quarter circle inputs well.
Literally how
Sfiv 3ds was my first fighting game experience fr and I wish I didn’t lose it. My first online match was sim and from that point forward I will hate sim for the rest of my life
I played a lot on the 3ds and even got to a decent number of BP. We could choose to fight against people using manual controls. At the beginning there were enough players playing manual that matchmaking was ok. Then the community faded away, so we (the few manual players left) had to play against non-manual players and hope to not find the usual Guile player.
Imagine getting the right read, jumping over a sonic boom, but still get your jump in stuffed. For characters with higher or slower jumps it was impossible.
On sf4 for iphone and android they implemented simplified inputs through a special SP button, but in that case a charge moves comes out only if charge has been acquired. This is much more fair, though there are still some "impossible" combos that can be done, for example: flash kick (using down charge SP) - fadc forward - ex flash kick (using traditional motion); it works because you can fadc forward holding down forward, so the charge is kept since before the first flash.
The first charge character I ever learned was the angel loli in Arcana Heart 3 and oh man did that force me to learn fast
Its nice being in a constant character crisis because charge moves are very easy to me now
Love charge characters
12:11
What's up with that HUD?
I think they just occupy a different headspace from characters who have quarter circle, half circle or spd inputs
I learned charge from playing Hina on Yatagarasu sucks that not many charge characters interest me like she did
For me like, charging is hard for me compared to motion based, though I get how it can be a benefit when you are good with it, charging feels kinda strange to me :p.
ANGRY COMMENT ABOUT SOL
Playing Strive Potemkin makes me want to play Rog
Playing a charge character is like having moves that appear and disappear from your movelist depending on your previous inputs and that just breaks my brain, its like a mini-resource with no visual indicator. Why deal with having to plan my combos ahead of time, and figure out if my FK is ready or not when i can just mash my buttons and all my moves are always available.
Im all for charge/hybrid characters
It super annoying to do on original PlayStation 4 pad, but doable, you'll have field-day if you're using hitbox, just take while to adjusting on hitbox (don't take it from me though, just what I've heard from discord, I don't even have hitbox).
But it kinda make sense when you see the demonstrate of charging with hitbox, also fought some hitbox users myself, they don't really miss opportunity to make most using of charge moves.
Just wait till he finds out about Cinder's dp in KI
10:54 this is exactly why I can't play charge characters. I like pressing forward too much.
Didn’t they give guile both charge and down forward to bring out super in sfv??
I knew charge character were dope
Could you please tell me how can I react to normal grabs?
You can't, you have to react to the "situation" where you think a grab is coming. That's a huge design philosophy of street fighter
At lower rank on wake up just (delay tech "option select" ) it will help you beat both the meaty and grab sitution, note that os can lose to shimmy and delayed buttons but still its a very imprtant technique to learn, without it you are never going to improve.
Just youtube how to perform delayed grab tech /late tech option select, i learned that word while listning to a commentry or watching some stream.
