Hi Paul, I'm a 73 year old man who's been shooting from the age of 7, and I've owned shot and trained with 100's of guns for proper use and safety. I want to say your videos are number one for accurate content, well thought out, and both interesting and entertaining, and it's plain to see the great extent of planning and prep you put into your posts. Thank you for videos, as they are an important learning event each time for people, both fellow shooters and all who want to learn about it. I can share this personal experience regarding a negligent discharge, and in all my years of gun use I've had it happen once, and I'm huge on safety, but can stress the point that it can happen to anyone even us old timers, so you must be alert at all times. I was loading a 94 lever action rifle while standing with several fellow target shooters, and after loading the tube to full I then used the lever to load one round into the chamber and closed the lever and the gun fired into the ground. My thumb slipped of the hammer. This was something I had practiced over many years and knew how to perform safely, but I was excited to get back to shooting and just became lax in my method. So, the point I'm making is, even being well trained with many years experience in gun safety it's necessary to be reminded or policed in safety from fellow experts, and your videos are greatly appreciated.

You should definitely share more of your experience! It's invaluable, especially in the context of passing on lessons to new generations. I wouldn't have even remotely become as interested in firearms and mechanical things if not for my father and uncle, but unfortunately he didn't feel like sharing in his later years..
And I like how Paul keeps up safely instead of others who try to be cool and show off that they can work a gun unsafely without the gun going off, because even though it may be 2nd nature to them, demonstrating bad habits around the less experienced can cause them to think they can do that certain thing with a gun. Like keeping one hammer down.

@@secretsquirrel6308 Because Paul likes to educate people, and there's plenty of "city boys" with a genuine interest. These questions might be tedious, maybe even frustrating, to those who've been in the hobby for a long time. But not everyone has. Every video is someone's first, and there's going to be a ton of apsiring shooters who just genuinely don't know these things, and they come away from this enriched.
Another wonderful presentation on BOTH: 1) Firearm usage and safety 2) How to apologize for forgetting that other people are complete morons. I come to the channel for #1, but honestly am more likely to make regular use of #2. Thank You! Wonderful video as always.

My experience in the military and other experiences. You go above and beyond to explain things. You are an excellent teacher. I always learn something that I didn't know. I am pleased to say in my 18+ yrs in the Army, I not once had a negligent discharge. (I was medically retired 2 yrs ago) The reason why I didn't have any was because of instructors like yourself. Yessir, it is funny, but kinda sad too. There's many people these days that absolutely cannot do basic math in their head or make change without looking at a calculator or cash register readout. I was just an average student when I graduated from school, but in the 21st century, I feel like I would probably make the honor roll if I were in school today
Nevertheless I reaaly give him credit forhis excellent calculation skills. I still know how it's done, but 12 multiplied by 23 is something I usually wouldn't get out faster than the electric calculator.

I remember when he was in his fourth grade, he challenged me with (what appeared to him as) challenging calculations, and I could do them fast in my head. Since then he knew it's something that can be done. It's a perishable skill, I gained it and lost it many times in my life, but the method will stay with you forever.
Not a super fare thing to compare some people can’t write stuff well in their head. This is coming from someone that has taken calculus and engineering. My brain literally builds things geometrically in seconds without me trying but I couldn’t do math in my head. I do the second multiplication and forget what the first one was.

I try to read all the comments, but sometimes there are just too many...I do remember reading the comment about the guy with his daughter, and felt that it was honest, something that many of us in our absolute manliness wouldn't want to put out here...hmm, we should learn from mistakes, and I'm reasonably positive that Everyone has made at least one at one point or another...
I am glad you put these two videos out. I own the Rossi also. The first time I took it out, I pulled both hammers back. I am a left handed shooter, and when I pulled the right trigger, the recoil caused my finger to slip and hit the second trigger. I now pull one hammer back at a time to avoid the issue.
I don't question anything this man says. He has a wealth of knowledge on many subjects and I have learned a lot from him. I'm glad he's able to share his experiences with us and I have much respect for him. Good stuff sir.

Well, sometimes the obvious isn't. That's why I answer so many questions, over and over, in my shop. Your techniques of firearm operation suits you and your firearms. Different firearms have different needs. I appreciate your presentation techniques and have stolen some for my own use. Thank you for interesting and informative content.
Paul's the realest for always responding to commentary with well thoughtout videos and explanations. I got a new england firearms pardner 410 single shot shotgun when I was 6. I learned how to properly lower the hammer the first day my dad took me out to shoot it. It's worth noting that with that particular shotgun it is impossible to open the action once the hammer's been pulled back. It's a transfer bar hammer system and when the hammer is pulled back the side of the transfer bar has an extended piece of metal that actually blocks the action release button. I'm certain this is a safety feature to prevent the possibility of out of battery detonations.
Thanks for the display of some very slick double barrels and all the others. I love the safety features, the educational aspects,and the song & dance routines of Professor Harrell.
Paul ~ your videos are always informative and entertaining. It is scary to realize how many ignorant people are out there. I am 68 and have had many weird things happen while hunting or target shooting with others. Some became teaching moments, others where stark reminders not to spend time with certain people while around firearms. Keep up the great content!
I always like these videos where Paul has to explain in detail, the obvious. I work in the I.T. field and have for 26 years and am never surprised by how little some people know about the computer they sit in front of 40 hours a week. They are like people that have been driving a car for 20 years and can't find the dipstick. Just keep making the videos Paul, and don't assume that everyone watching knows firearm operations
I'm guilty of being one of those people that doesn't know very much about computers. Other than UA-cam on my phone or gaming on my Xbox, I really wouldn't use them if I didn't have to, I even went a couple years recently without a phone or computer and it bothered everyone around me just knowing I didn't use anything like that. The fact is, they just bore me, so I don't learn as much about them as I probably should. I like to think though that at least I have the good grace to admit I'm ignorant with them and not to proud to ask for help.
Thank you Paul. At 68 I still learn very much from your videos. I have been training myself to keep looking down range when reloading my lever rifles and putting a new magazine in my auto loaders pistols. Using snap caps for the lever rifles and in magazines.
Hi Paul... I give you loads of credit, which you deserve, for the time and effort that you've put into the details in your videos. You take that time to explain the finer details of all the intricate points necessary from start to finish on the subjects you talk about. Even with that you get judged by some 'Expert Commentators' as being less than perfect. Who would have thought being less than perfect was a failing grade? Then, as always, the Part 2's prove you are prefect! Personally I'm looking forward to the 'How to properly eat Pop Tarts' series and the things I will learn in the first video. As for part 2, you know the comments, like desert after a great meal!
i had a stoeger hammer-less coach gun. Best shotgun i ever owned for Michigan grouse hunting. The birds are fast and the brush is thick. i also used it for some time as house protection. Matched up sweet with my .357 Blackhawk.
Yeah, my Stoeger just opens right up...I never considered that the external hammers could prevent opening the gun, and yet that one shotgun could be opened when cocked...I would think it would be a standard with all external hammers to be shaped so the gun could be opened...I learn something everyday...
I have one of those too! I really enjoy it. Apparently, someone makes barrel inserts for them that allow you to turn it into a .45-70 - kind of like an old-school "stopping rifle".
I've never been to a psychologist but I'm guessing that watching this channel is way better! This actually has a therapeutic effect for me, lol, thank you, Paul!

Paul doesn't simply hunt deer, they come to him and surrender. Paul has no problem doing 4th grade math because he invented math. To be perfectly honest sir, I have often found in teaching just about anything that one should go into the detail over and over again as folks often disregard/assume those details. So I thank you for going over the details despite how frustrating it can be to need to do so. Beyond that I like to find out about the various types/makes/models of firearms to get a touch stone with why someone does what they do and the evolution of various firearms. You have my thanks sir.
I felt the the need to say that: I think this is the best gun channel on yt, because it has instructions on how to use a gun safely and effectively, while majority of other channels are more product review, it's cool/interesting/very useful to watch reviews, but to actually learn how to use them is more important, the "boring part where I talk" is in my opinion the best part, and sometimes, not even professionals seems to know how to use a gun properly. A few anedoctes: when I was about 12 yrs old, my father was thinking about buying an air rifle, and we were playing with it, then my brother pulled the trigger "by accident", luckily it was pointed to the air, and no ammo inside(and yes, it was my brother, not me). But my father was a sergeant in the army, and even went to other countries for missions, he didn't taught us the basic safety procedures, and I also have a photo of him with the hand on the muzzle of the barrel of a shotgun. About needing to make the caveats, that may be really boring for some people, but unfortunatelly it's necessary, many times I made some post or question on the internet, and I had to edit it many times and add more details because people don't know how to read, it looks so obvious and clear, but they don't just ask for a more clear explanation, they just tell me I'm wrong. And lastly, the videos can be used as a lesson, not just on the gun topic, it may help people to realize that they don't know everything, to make them stop just repeating phrases, etc...Many years ago when I was at school, some classmates were doing an experiment with fire inside the classroom, and at one point they lost control of the fire, but since I had some mentality on preparedness and paying attention on pottential dangers that others may not see(even though it was obvious), way before it happened, I took the cap out of my water bottle, and was prepared in case of anything happens, I didn't wait the fire to get bigger, the moment I noticed they lost the control of it, I immediately poured water on it, and pottentially saved dozens of people that night, I said pottentially because nothing really happened, the fire didn't spread, but fortunatelly, I never knew what would've happened.
Imagine the lever action that would allow the hammer to drop while slightly out of battery, and that slight (or not so slight) dimple caused a round to be fired... out of battery... man that could be a bad day I would think. Thanks again Paul, you may be in no way telling us HOW to do something (only how you do it) but I take your advice to heart anyway!
@PaulHarrell I saw this presentation when you first published it. Fast forward to this weekend. My oldest son purchased his first shotgun (technically I purchased it on his behalf since he is only 12). I remembered seeing this presentation and looked it up for him to watch so he could learn from your experience and knowledge. This presentation struck home for him more than others because it turns out his first shotgun is a Rossi coach gun (the overland w/20" barrel). Thank you for the great content you have made over the years. I'll be referencing it for years to come to help teach all of my children firearm safety, etiquette, form, and humility.
Great one Paul! Many have just enough knowledge to make them dangerous. The varieties, complexities and and history of firearms is so vast that it is practically impossible for any one person to know everything about them and yet it has more "experts" than just about any other field that I have interests in! hahaha Keep up the good work and keep sticking it to them! ;)

Thanks for the new video. I just love watching your videos. Some more camp chef cooking would be nice too! When I was a kid, my uncle had a 20 gauge side by side and he told me to always shoot the left barrel (rear trigger) first...that being if right barrel is fired first recoil could cause you to also fire the left barrel, a double shot which is not always a good thing.
Make sure you go watch all the Thanksgiving Specials for Dutch Oven camp cooking. The amount of varied menus he has put out for each one is staggering.
Depends on the gun. I had a Sears and Roebuck that it would be practically impossible for that to happen. The triggers were too far apart (I assume for winter shooting while wearing gloves). I'm sure other models have a different trigger arraignment.

Hi I am from South Africa and have seen a person do a dance with a 375 H&H that was loaded. Needless to say the dance stopped when the hunter saw us diving to the ground. It really does happen! This was after he had just shot a Cape Buffalo.
This was a great video. I loved the fact that the deer showed up just in time for you to talk about the deer in the background 😂 I also really enjoyed seeing the old shotguns and that lever action is beautiful.
Thanks for another great video. Even this 'waste of time' follow-up provided additional education and refresher. So it wasn't a total loss. I have always wondered who these obsessive harrassers are. Why do they watch somebody they think incompetent? I'm just glad you continue to produce these highly educational videos.

I just can't understand why people continue to try to argue with Paul or tell him he's doing anything wrong. He's obviously researched everything that goes into each video before the video is made. And the idea of Paul using a green screen is laughable for sure. Where do these people come from and how do they find their way here?

While serving at USEMBASSY Argentina, decided to visit fellow USMARINE in Uruguay. While in Uruguay 1981, I bought an antique pistol/shotgun. I couldn’t determine caliber of firearm, but an American .45 round dropped cleanly through barrel with little contact. Without damaging weapon I eventually used tiny piece of duraglit to clean up the silver cursive inlay, located above this double barrel weapon, which clearly had A. Rossi. I gave this weapon to my mother’s common law husband and gun collector, as goodwill gesture. Working at American Embassies gave me the opportunity to fire various weapons that we Marines had, and other folks. I always enjoy and learning something while watching Paul Harrell.
Hello, I completely enjoyed the video. I'm 67 and learnd to handle my 100+ year old American Gun Co. 12gauge coach gun, almost identical to yours, when I was about 10 years old. My grandfather taught me EXACTLY the way you use yours and I still do it the same way today. Don't worry when they shoot off a toe they will say "Oh yeah, he said not to do that." Keep up the good work.
We all learn so much from watching Mr. Harrell's videos. 4th grade basic math skills are some of the most important life skills that I learned in grammar school. Thanks for the video and we all enjoyed watching the wildlife on your "range." Did we hear a wild turkey early in the video?
Paul, as you know, there are legions of self-proclaimed "experts" who take great pleasure in trying to make themselves look better by pointing out the "errors" of others. Thanks for exposing these people for what they are.
During a muzzleloading match a couple years ago, during the halt to change targets at the 25 yard line we had a whole herd of whitetails take a stroll along the top of the 100 yard berm while we were changing targets. It was almost as if they thought "ok they have stopped shooting, let's get to the other side!"
Well I think it's important that all gun owners get to know each of their firearms operations. The fact is, I have had ND's with firearms I have had for years. Safety is paramount , thank you for pointing out the obvious. Thanks again to you and your crew.
I'm excessively fortunate to have never had any ND's. But I never take for granted that it could happen at any given moment while handling a firearm & ammunition. I did go to the gun store once with a live round in the chamber of a 7mm rem. mag. We both nearly had a heart attack when the salesman opened the bolt & it flew out onto the floor. Lesson learned, & like I said... I'm excessively fortunate that it didn't end catastrophically.
@@grisslebear Can we call that a negligent loading but not a discharge? That is basically just as bad basing it on your and the salesman's reactions. In fact, any time you are giving a firearm to another, "action open" is a great policy as well as clearing the action before you hand it over. Basically those two steps.
I didn't have a total ND yesterday at the range, but I was suprised...messing with the decocker on a Bersa the round fired, but the gun was pointing at a target for 'just in case', and i learned something about the gun (the decocker must be completely engaged, halfway ain't going to get it)...seems like i had determined this once before, the gun was unloaded that time, but having it go bang for real immediately reminded me to be careful...sheesh, I hope I ain't getting too old for this sh_t...
I havent thought about the "right out front or left behind" mnemonic since the first video, but i was able to remember it, so thanks Paul for teaching me something new

Hey Paul, just checked my Rossi and it opens with the hammer cocked. Now, it has wear and I know that every gun is different and has its own diet. I just wanted to point this out that even the exact same gun made by the same company on the same floor has differences. To the people that say you can do this, well this is why it doesn't apply to all guns. The lever comes very close to the hammer but due to wear I can open it. The lever action rifle comment people could be the same way, older gun, less safety features. The best thing is to learn the gun and know what you can and can't do even if they look the same they are never the same. Paul, you are a great teacher and you know your stuff. I'm glad to have people like you in the gun community to point out small nitpicks like these. Keep up the good work!

I've been watching your videos for some time now and I still don't get why so many anonymous gun " experts" can't wait to jump up and question your approach/techniques. Ignore them; You Rule.
A lot of these experts get their expertise from computer games and from copying stuff they read from other "experts" in other comment sections. Proliferating the nonsense.
I think it is great that he skims the comment section and doesn't ignore it, because it makes great content, dispels a lot of myths and gets those that know more thinking about what they actually don't know.
Another great educational video from Paul Harrel. This is the 2nd video I've used, instead of trying to take the long road, trying to explain gun safety for a certain situation. This conversation just came up the other day with a friend of mine.

I really liked the demonstration of how to decock various firearms. I remember something similar on carry conditions. Demonstrating how different guns work is valuable safety information.
I always love your videos because you present in a way that is easy to understand, explain in detail, but don't talk down to your viewer (or try to talk over their heads). I have never seen you frustrated, but considering the BS that was being thrown your way, it don't blame you. Take a deep breath, shake it off, know what the vast majority of us have you back.
This is one of the best gun channels on youtube. Informative, educational and of course fun. I will never understand how a channel like DemolitionRanch can have so many subscribers. If you have seen 3 videos of Matt you know what it is about. Pointless shooting on various things...I like Brandon Herrera though he is fun and informative too. Anyway Paul you are the best. Keep it up.
I have a Stoeger coach gun that I keep next to my night stand. Hammer guns require practice to become proficient with. It's definately an art. I had my gunsmith friend turn the extractors into ejectors for faster reloads. I learned many years ago as a young lad about using one finger on double triggers and cocking one hammer at a time when I was duck hunting with an old Itica 10 gauge hammer gun and I was in the habbit of cocking both hammers and using one finger on each trigger until the day I accidentally pulled both triggers at once. That was a painful lesson that I never forgot.
You never forget the day when your shooting a double barrel and they both go off! It happened to me with a 12ga when I was 8 (didn't even hit the duck), I can't even imagine how bad a 10ga would be!
I am yet one more time amazed by your patience with ignorant people, you really are providing useful and safe information that obviously has come from good firearms handling practice! Wish more people would watch your videos!

You should definitely share more of your experience! It's invaluable, especially in the context of passing on lessons to new generations. I wouldn't have even remotely become as interested in firearms and mechanical things if not for my father and uncle, but unfortunately he didn't feel like sharing in his later years..
And I like how Paul keeps up safely instead of others who try to be cool and show off that they can work a gun unsafely without the gun going off, because even though it may be 2nd nature to them, demonstrating bad habits around the less experienced can cause them to think they can do that certain thing with a gun. Like keeping one hammer down.

These questions might be tedious, maybe even frustrating, to those who've been in the hobby for a long time. But not everyone has. I am pleased to say in my 18+ yrs in the Army, I not once had a negligent discharge. (I was medically retired 2 yrs ago) The reason why I didn't have any was because of instructors like yourself. I taught those skills to me nephew, who apparently wrote his final high-school math exam today, and it went fine.
I remember when he was in his fourth grade, he challenged me with (what appeared to him as) challenging calculations, and I could do them fast in my head. Since then he knew it's something that can be done.
It's a perishable skill, I gained it and lost it many times in my life, but the method will stay with you forever.
Not a super fare thing to compare some people can’t write stuff well in their head. This is coming from someone that has taken calculus and engineering. My brain literally builds things geometrically in seconds without me trying but I couldn’t do math in my head. I do the second multiplication and forget what the first one was.

I am glad you put these two videos out. I own the Rossi also. The first time I took it out, I pulled both hammers back. I am a left handed shooter, and when I pulled the right trigger, the recoil caused my finger to slip and hit the second trigger. I now pull one hammer back at a time to avoid the issue.

Well, sometimes the obvious isn't. That's why I answer so many questions, over and over, in my shop. Your techniques of firearm operation suits you and your firearms. Different firearms have different needs. I appreciate your presentation techniques and have stolen some for my own use. Thank you for interesting and informative content.
If Paul didn’t wear ear plugs he would be deaf, just from the times I’ve seen him shoot.
Paul's the realest for always responding to commentary with well thoughtout videos and explanations. I got a new england firearms pardner 410 single shot shotgun when I was 6. I learned how to properly lower the hammer the first day my dad took me out to shoot it. It's worth noting that with that particular shotgun it is impossible to open the action once the hammer's been pulled back. It's a transfer bar hammer system and when the hammer is pulled back the side of the transfer bar has an extended piece of metal that actually blocks the action release button. I'm certain this is a safety feature to prevent the possibility of out of battery detonations.

I am 68 and have had many weird things happen while hunting or target shooting with others. I always like these videos where Paul has to explain in detail, the obvious. I work in the I.T. field and have for 26 years and am never surprised by how little some people know about the computer they sit in front of 40 hours a week. They are like people that have been driving a car for 20 years and can't find the dipstick. Just keep making the videos Paul, and don't assume that everyone watching knows firearm operations
I'm guilty of being one of those people that doesn't know very much about computers. Other than UA-cam on my phone or gaming on my Xbox, I really wouldn't use them if I didn't have to, I even went a couple years recently without a phone or computer and it bothered everyone around me just knowing I didn't use anything like that. The fact is, they just bore me, so I don't learn as much about them as I probably should. I like to think though that at least I have the good grace to admit I'm ignorant with them and not to proud to ask for help.
Thank you Paul. At 68 I still learn very much from your videos. I have been training myself to keep looking down range when reloading my lever rifles and putting a new magazine in my auto loaders pistols. Using snap caps for the lever rifles and in magazines.
Hi Paul... I give you loads of credit, which you deserve, for the time and effort that you've put into the details in your videos. You take that time to explain the finer details of all the intricate points necessary from start to finish on the subjects you talk about. Even with that you get judged by some 'Expert Commentators' as being less than perfect. Who would have thought being less than perfect was a failing grade? Then, as always, the Part 2's prove you are prefect!
Personally I'm looking forward to the 'How to properly eat Pop Tarts' series and the things I will learn in the first video. As for part 2, you know the comments, like desert after a great meal!
i had a stoeger hammer-less coach gun. Best shotgun i ever owned for Michigan grouse hunting. The birds are fast and the brush is thick. i also used it for some time as house protection. Matched up sweet with my .357 Blackhawk.
Nice. I got a used Baikal coach hammer-less in 12 gauge years ago for like $180 bucks. Love it. It's one of my favorites.

Yeah, my Stoeger just opens right up...I never considered that the external hammers could prevent opening the gun, and yet that one shotgun could be opened when cocked...I would think it would be a standard with all external hammers to be shaped so the gun could be opened...I learn something everyday...
I have one of those too! I really enjoy it. Apparently, someone makes barrel inserts for them that allow you to turn it into a .45-70 - kind of like an old-school "stopping rifle".

To be perfectly honest sir, I have often found in teaching just about anything that one should go into the detail over and over again as folks often disregard/assume those details. So I thank you for going over the details despite how frustrating it can be to need to do so. Beyond that I like to find out about the various types/makes/models of firearms to get a touch stone with why someone does what they do and the evolution of various firearms.

Paul's dance routine is not the entertainment we deserved, but was the entertainment we needed.
I felt the the need to say that: I think this is the best gun channel on yt, because it has instructions on how to use a gun safely and effectively, while majority of other channels are more product review, it's cool/interesting/very useful to watch reviews, but to actually learn how to use them is more important, the "boring part where I talk" is in my opinion the best part, and sometimes, not even professionals seems to know how to use a gun properly.
A few anedoctes: when I was about 12 yrs old, my father was thinking about buying an air rifle, and we were playing with it, then my brother pulled the trigger "by accident", luckily it was pointed to the air, and no ammo inside(and yes, it was my brother, not me). But my father was a sergeant in the army, and even went to other countries for missions, he didn't taught us the basic safety procedures, and I also have a photo of him with the hand on the muzzle of the barrel of a shotgun.
About needing to make the caveats, that may be really boring for some people, but unfortunatelly it's necessary, many times I made some post or question on the internet, and I had to edit it many times and add more details because people don't know how to read, it looks so obvious and clear, but they don't just ask for a more clear explanation, they just tell me I'm wrong.
And lastly, the videos can be used as a lesson, not just on the gun topic, it may help people to realize that they don't know everything, to make them stop just repeating phrases, etc...Many years ago when I was at school, some classmates were doing an experiment with fire inside the classroom, and at one point they lost control of the fire, but since I had some mentality on preparedness and paying attention on pottential dangers that others may not see(even though it was obvious), way before it happened, I took the cap out of my water bottle, and was prepared in case of anything happens, I didn't wait the fire to get bigger, the moment I noticed they lost the control of it, I immediately poured water on it, and pottentially saved dozens of people that night, I said pottentially because nothing really happened, the fire didn't spread, but fortunatelly, I never knew what would've happened.
Paul is definitely one of the most educational gun UA-camrs. Excellent presentations on a wide variety of guns in a wide variety of situations.
Imagine the lever action that would allow the hammer to drop while slightly out of battery, and that slight (or not so slight) dimple caused a round to be fired... out of battery... man that could be a bad day I would think. Thanks again Paul, you may be in no way telling us HOW to do something (only how you do it) but I take your advice to heart anyway!

My oldest son purchased his first shotgun (technically I purchased it on his behalf since he is only 12). I remembered seeing this presentation and looked it up for him to watch so he could learn from your experience and knowledge. This presentation struck home for him more than others because it turns out his first shotgun is a Rossi coach gun (the overland w/20" barrel). Thank you for the great content you have made over the years. I'll be referencing it for years to come to help teach all of my children firearm safety, etiquette, form, and humility.

Thanks for the new video. I just love watching your videos. Some more camp chef cooking would be nice too! When I was a kid, my uncle had a 20 gauge side by side and he told me to always shoot the left barrel (rear trigger) first...that being if right barrel is fired first recoil could cause you to also fire the left barrel, a double shot which is not always a good thing.
Make sure you go watch all the Thanksgiving Specials for Dutch Oven camp cooking. The amount of varied menus he has put out for each one is staggering.
Depends on the gun. I had a Sears and Roebuck that it would be practically impossible for that to happen. The triggers were too far apart (I assume for winter shooting while wearing gloves). I'm sure other models have a different trigger arraignment.

Hi I am from South Africa and have seen a person do a dance with a 375 H&H that was loaded. Needless to say the dance stopped when the hunter saw us diving to the ground. It really does happen! This was after he had just shot a Cape Buffalo.

While serving at USEMBASSY Argentina, decided to visit fellow USMARINE in Uruguay. While in Uruguay 1981, I bought an antique pistol/shotgun. I couldn’t determine caliber of firearm, but an American .45 round dropped cleanly through barrel with little contact. Without damaging weapon I eventually used tiny piece of duraglit to clean up the silver cursive inlay, located above this double barrel weapon, which clearly had A. Rossi. I gave this weapon to my mother’s common law husband and gun collector, as goodwill gesture. Working at American Embassies gave me the opportunity to fire various weapons that we Marines had, and other folks. I always enjoy and learning something while watching Paul Harrell.
Dang misread this and thought Paul was going to coach me on shooting more…and he did!!

I'm 67 and learnd to handle my 100+ year old American Gun Co. 12gauge coach gun, almost identical to yours, when I was about 10 years old.
My grandfather taught me EXACTLY the way you use yours and I still do it the same way today.

We all learn so much from watching Mr. Harrell's videos. 4th grade basic math skills are some of the most important life skills that I learned in grammar school. Thanks for the video and we all enjoyed watching the wildlife on your "range." Did we hear a wild turkey early in the video?
Paul, as you know, there are legions of self-proclaimed "experts" who take great pleasure in trying to make themselves look better by pointing out the "errors" of others. Thanks for exposing these people for what they are.
During a muzzleloading match a couple years ago, during the halt to change targets at the 25 yard line we had a whole herd of whitetails take a stroll along the top of the 100 yard berm while we were changing targets. It was almost as if they thought "ok they have stopped shooting, let's get to the other side!"

I'm excessively fortunate to have never had any ND's. But I never take for granted that it could happen at any given moment while handling a firearm & ammunition.
I did go to the gun store once with a live round in the chamber of a 7mm rem. mag.
We both nearly had a heart attack when the salesman opened the bolt & it flew out onto the floor. Lesson learned, & like I said... I'm excessively fortunate that it didn't end catastrophically.
@@grisslebear Can we call that a negligent loading but not a discharge? That is basically just as bad basing it on your and the salesman's reactions. In fact, any time you are giving a firearm to another, "action open" is a great policy as well as clearing the action before you hand it over. Basically those two steps.
I didn't have a total ND yesterday at the range, but I was suprised...messing with the decocker on a Bersa the round fired, but the gun was pointing at a target for 'just in case', and i learned something about the gun (the decocker must be completely engaged, halfway ain't going to get it)...seems like i had determined this once before, the gun was unloaded that time, but having it go bang for real immediately reminded me to be careful...sheesh, I hope I ain't getting too old for this sh_t...
I havent thought about the "right out front or left behind" mnemonic since the first video, but i was able to remember it, so thanks Paul for teaching me something new

Hey Paul, just checked my Rossi and it opens with the hammer cocked. Now, it has wear and I know that every gun is different and has its own diet. I just wanted to point this out that even the exact same gun made by the same company on the same floor has differences. To the people that say you can do this, well this is why it doesn't apply to all guns. The lever comes very close to the hammer but due to wear I can open it. The lever action rifle comment people could be the same way, older gun, less safety features. The best thing is to learn the gun and know what you can and can't do even if they look the same they are never the same. Paul, you are a great teacher and you know your stuff. I'm glad to have people like you in the gun community to point out small nitpicks like these. Keep up the good work!

I've been watching your videos for some time now and I still don't get why so many anonymous gun " experts" can't wait to jump up and question your approach/techniques.
Ignore them; You Rule.
A lot of these experts get their expertise from computer games and from copying stuff they read from other "experts" in other comment sections. Proliferating the nonsense.
I think it is great that he skims the comment section and doesn't ignore it, because it makes great content, dispels a lot of myths and gets those that know more thinking about what they actually don't know.
Another great educational video from Paul Harrel. This is the 2nd video I've used, instead of trying to take the long road, trying to explain gun safety for a certain situation. This conversation just came up the other day with a friend of mine.

I really liked the demonstration of how to decock various firearms. I remember something similar on carry conditions. Demonstrating how different guns work is valuable safety information.

I always love your videos because you present in a way that is easy to understand, explain in detail, but don't talk down to your viewer (or try to talk over their heads). I have never seen you frustrated, but considering the BS that was being thrown your way, it don't blame you.

This is one of the best gun channels on youtube. Informative, educational and of course fun. I will never understand how a channel like DemolitionRanch can have so many subscribers. If you have seen 3 videos of Matt you know what it is about. Pointless shooting on various things...I like Brandon Herrera though he is fun and informative too.
Anyway Paul you are the best. Keep it up.
I have a Stoeger coach gun that I keep next to my night stand. Hammer guns require practice to become proficient with. It's definately an art. I had my gunsmith friend turn the extractors into ejectors for faster reloads. I learned many years ago as a young lad about using one finger on double triggers and cocking one hammer at a time when I was duck hunting with an old Itica 10 gauge hammer gun and I was in the habbit of cocking both hammers and using one finger on each trigger until the day I accidentally pulled both triggers at once. That was a painful lesson that I never forgot.
You never forget the day when your shooting a double barrel and they both go off! It happened to me with a 12ga when I was 8 (didn't even hit the duck), I can't even imagine how bad a 10ga would be!
Paul you are a national treasure. Please do not ever retire from youtube. Your knowledge is needed for future generations.
