Brian Auger's Oblivion Express

- The first outing by Brian Auger's jazz-rock ensemble the Oblivion Express, first issued in 1971, is one of the great masterpieces of jazz-rock fusion. Auger, having just disbanded his longtime band the Trinity in 1970, still had plenty of rock and roll in his system. His yearning for the open frontiers of electric jazz was certainly the driving force -- in the same way that it was for Miles Davis on A Tribute to Jack Johnson, and Lifetime was for Tony Williams -- but it was anchored in the visceral application of rock. With guitarist Jim Mullen, bassist Barry Dean, and drummer Robbie McIntosh, Auger charted into the unknown. This album fits like a glove, each tune moving ever forward into the next. From the opening knotty, rhythmic twists in "Dragon Song," to the subterranean counterpoint in "Total Eclipse," to the band's theme song that closes the album with its pumping bass and guitar interludes, and Auger's Lemmy Kilmister-like vocals, Oblivion Express is a classic in its genre. There is a rawness in passion and intent here that is balanced by wondrously imaginative arrangements for rock band instrumentation, and an aesthetic that is disciplined and visionary.

What Memories!!
Amazing Band from the greatest beginning of my favorite Decade in MUSIC AND LIFE! Most memorable Live Concert of this incredible Band was at one of the hippest NJ Venues of that Era, "The Joint In The Woods"! Astounding Show, UpClose AND Totally Personal!
Those were The Best Days Of Our Lives. Would gladly drain my 1960s PoodleBank for a One-Way Time-Tunnel Ticket To THE SENSUOUS PSYCH 70s!
Thanks so much for gifting THIS LP... and double thanks for your fab WriteUp!🗽

One of my favorite albums- sooooo underrated!
Really true. A masterpiece of jazz- rock fusion.
Got my first taste of jazz from this record in 72 along with John Mayall's Jazz Blues Fusion which was more Blues than Jazz. thanks for sharing. Have not heard it in almost 45 years.
I have had the pleasure to meet Brian personally. Great man.
Absolutely. Always very approachable and affable. A true gentleman.
me also a few times and he always sez sorry I meet so many ppl . He gave me and my girl rickets to the ice palace concert in las vegas and then many, many years later we talked to him again when he was with his band and eric burton. He came to the bar after eric came by to talk to my girl ..he was very nice(eric) and we hung with him until 6 or 7 ish in the a.m. .Brain wanted eric to go eat and go tosleep.

Excellent!!!
"Total Eclipse" just blows me away.... such a great song...
Not to long after buying this album saw them at the electric factory in Philly what a great show
masterpiece
I came across this album in a record shop and took a chance on it having not heard of this band before, but I was aware of Brian Auger. I modeled my own Jazz-Rock band and it's sound on this record.
Aaaah. This is fantastic Brian Auger after the Trinity with Julie Driscoll. I have this on vinyl (sorry to those of you who see this repeat phrase) and am lucky to have been in that era. I play it on my 1973 Technics SL1200 as well! Ha.
Wish I had heard it back then
Enjoyable now
fantastic,
Thanks "LombardMood" pour ce formidable régal musical so Jazz 🌺
💖♪♫ 🎸🎷 🎻🎹🎺🌺🎧🎼🎩🎩🎩
Barry deans on bass one of the very best
I've always loved this song. Robbie Macintosh, the drummer, plays like he's on speed. the guy is just sooo fast - I love it! Thanx 4 uploading bud! - Bob
Really sad how he passed
robbie McIntosh overdose on drugs
Robbie had great technique.
Gorgeous
Astonishing pop-jazz!!!
Far out Man ,I dig it!
Such a killer heavy track. Up there with Sabbath & "red" by King Crimson !
Capolavoro !
Thanks a lot "LombardMod" pour cet ajout musical 🎼🖤🎸🎷 🎻🎹🎺🌺🎧🎼🎩🎩🎩
I'd love to hear Brian's albums remastered. ... Even remembering it's 71 and early in the jazz/rock world some of the themes are quite silly. ... Robbie has the best sound and felel on this and you can see why AWB picked him up.
I have the LP, yep!
really good stuff. I love caravan and early ambrosia
got to take the time to learn that keyboard riff I have a Yamaha with a pitch wheel but I know little to nothing about actually playing it. I will play it by ear even if it takes a quarter century to learn!(Dragon Song) crazy
I have to admit I've never really listened much to this kind of stuff, but, after Captain Sensible spoke so highly of this, I gave it a go, not bad, not at all
"Total Eclipse" 4:28 is a mindblower.. is all good (riding on Barry's bass), but the part of Brian's solo beginning at 11:28 digs in deep - play it LOUD.... Found this album at a used record store while in college in 1980.
Is the same great lineup as "A Better Land" ua-cam.com/video/GJJfqby5T1E/v-deo.html
Not so far sometimes from Canterbury Scene. Organ settings reminds me first Caravan era.
i get the record , it's pretty good
👍👍🇬🇪
26:01 - The Sword (Madlib Invazion)
The Mahavishnu Orchestra definitely stole the Intro of Dragon Song and used it on their
classic fusion album "Birds of fire". I'm sure that's not a coincidence!
Dude, read the credits.. What a comment

Does anyone know the lyrics to the song "Oblivion Express". I can't seem to find them online
Like if Tony Iommi played for Deep Purple....
Super time branded but also just honestly intense and hard rocking. A band you would imagine in a batman universe listened to by violent students.. So if you are a
60s stoner this is a grail, it also is never too catchy and because of that doesnt ware off. It served as the entry record to smoke bong with friends when i was 18 in a flat that had all sorts of 60s props(i own original ufo club london posters) , objects mixed woth contemporary objects and dimmed warm Lights, silly xmas tree lights, allot of friendly debating chess and consoles.. My counter to the "black light, one poster, no talk" fraction. Being upbeat, being accessible but clever and dark
Great music but the comments in the preview are some of them idiotic. This is very far away from "Jack Johnson" by Miles Davis which apparently the poster has never heard. Still that is not Auger's fault.
Yeah. Lots of these idiotic comments come from idiotic minds. Instead of showing they know something about music, they end up exposing themselves as a waste of time. Jack Johnson? 😂
