    Dude thx! In addition to giving me much info on my 4wd system u saved me from stress in the last minute of your video. I recently tried shifting in 4wdl and the car started beeping. I tried everything to get it to stop and if I had not watched your whole video I would not have known about the need to be in neutral when shifting into 4wdl. So..I started the car, shifted into neutral and boom! All good. Much thx

    This video is very informative.My experience was to try all these things and when it came time to purchase transfer case switches I went for one of the cheap aftermarket sets (-$50).These actually made things worse as the vehicle would no longer shift from 4th to 5th and still had flashing lights.I rolled the dice and bought OEM Mitsubishi switches for $330 and like magic everything was working properly!

    Hi David. Thanks for the video.. great info. I have a 2003 Montero Limited (in Central Indiana). I grounded pin 1 to pin 4 and the center diff light simply blinked uniformly (I think the short blink) for many minutes. It did this both times I tried it. Any thought on the reason for that? Also, I have a Zurich ZR11 code reader, and it has supposedly reads Mitsubishi ABS codes and it showed a code 35 "engine fail". Do you have any info on whether these issues may be related? IT's from the rust belt, so I'm guessing some of the five Tcase switches are corroded and not working right. I look forward to your thoughts? Thanks.

    • @davidg.9478
      @davidg.9478  5 років тому +1

      I would attempt the pin 1 & 4 again to make sure or pin 1 to a ground. If the 4WD lights are blinking then you have a code that goes with it and you need that code. Engine and ABS codes read from a diffrent ECU and will not represent the 4WD system.

    Thanks for the video, great help. I’ve got code 33 and am going to replace all 5 switches. Can you tell me the steps to dropping the transfer case? Did you do it with or without disconnecting the driveshaft?

    • @davidg.9478
      @davidg.9478  5 років тому +1

      No, yull have to disconnect the drive shaft and then drop the tranafer case mount and lower the case with a jack. You can lower it enough to reach the switches but youll still have trouble seeing them. So sme feeling around is required.

      Its is a Jeep JK bumper thats 72" wide. Anything shorter won't reach the fenders. I made custom brackets that mounted around the Montero frame to bolt the bumper too. Jeep bumpers have flat plates for mounting so they're not too hard to adapt.

    Thanks. Now I understand how this system works.
    I've got a 2003 Montero Limited, 3.8L, 217,000 miles. I've also got the infamous Differential Lock orange blinking light that would come and go for months and eventually stayed, and DTC 33 when I read the codes by jumping pins 1 & 4 on the OBD2 plug and counting the blinks. I also had codes 34 and 35 but after swapping the Freewheel Clutch Solenoid and disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes, the 34/35 codes went away and only 33 remains...the center orange light blinking and no control of the system remain also.
    The ground cable on the transfer case is good. All device plugs, vacuum hoses and wires are connected, clean and tight. Voltage reads 10.8-volts from each of the switches' harnesses with the ignition key On.
    I'm trying to figure out which Transfer Position Switch(s) (1 thru 5) is actually bad, before dropping the t-case to swap all 5 of them out. I want to be sure something else is not the issue making it look as of the switches are bad, as I hate swapping parts and doing unnecessary labor. I'm suspicious because I know the clutch solenoids were bad because I tested them, but I doubt they went bad, plus a t-case switch also...as in simultaneously. Maybe so, maybe not.
    I have a test light probe and a digital voltmeter/ohmmeter. Is there a test procedure to test each switch before dropping the t-case and removing them to be sure it is a switch (or maybe two) and not another issue?
    Thanks!

      You solved it?

    • @thesetruths1404
      @thesetruths1404 Рік тому

      @@ibbi270 yes. When the solenoid failed it confused the 5 switches. All I did was manually open and ground the applicable plugs to make it cycle from 2wd to 4 low lock and then back to 2h. It reset the switches. I would not suggest changing switches until you do this first, especially if you had a 4x4 part fail and it was replaced.

    Hello Sir David, I know it doesn't have anything to do with the main content of your video but where can I get a bull bar/guard like your Montero's. I've come across the single tubular model that only holds the fug lights and a winch platform. I like the looks of a full size bull guard.

    • @davidg.9478
      @davidg.9478  4 роки тому +1

      The bull bar front bumper i have is a custom fit i did my self. It is a 72" wide Jeep JK bumper. I made custom brackets that bolted around and through the front frame support with plates to mount the JK bumper too. If your looking to use a jeep JK bumper, anything under 72" wont reach the fenders so keep that in mind.

However, actuator does not move in or out. It does move by hand so not seized. So I am guessing the actuator needs replacement?

    David, are you still answering questions on this video? I have a 2003 very similar to yours but I also have a 2001 XLS and the flashing codes appear on the ABS dashboard light. Have you come across anyone with the same problems but from this year model? is it normal that the it uses the ABS light for emitting those codes?

    • @davidg.9478
      @davidg.9478  4 роки тому

      I am, and if the ABS light is flashing then there is a code attached to it. I would try to pull the ABS codes before moving forward. The ABS system communicates with the Actic Trac and Super Select but ultimately the ABS system is its own entity and youll need the code in order to resolve the issue.

  • @JohnnyBfromPeoria
    @JohnnyBfromPeoria 5 років тому

    You stated that you were going to post a link to a chart with the definitions of the codes in the video description, but I don't see it. Also, I believe to read the codes after shorting pins one and four on the OBD-II connector, the key must then be placed in the "run" position, not the "acc" position, as you stated. And if there are five transfer position switches and one is bad, giving you the 33 code, why would you say that a lot of people just change all five? Isn't that like people replacing the solenoid pack to start with, before even pulling codes...except a lot more expensive? Lastly, can you pull "any" of these codes out of an OBD-I/pre-96 Montero?

    • @davidg.9478
      @davidg.9478  5 років тому

      It's a 26min unscripted video of me rushing to include a lot of information. I misspoke several times but for the most part all of it was corrected a some point. People change all five because it's a lot of work to change one and the same amount of work to change five. It's not even comparible to the solenoids. Replacing all would be preventive maintenance after the problem is fixed. Randomly replacing the solenoids cause your lazy to take 2sec to check the code is just moronic. You can pull these codes of any of the active-trac and super select equipped vehicles.

    I've got a 2005 Montero, and one of the lights indicator (rear left) it's off...code it's 35 and apparently I'm not having that wheel enabled (engaged). The system it's up and running, actuators, vacuum set up and the valve switches are working properly but sometimes when driving the transfer light indicator starts to blinking orange. Do you have any clue about where should I start to look into for a quick diagnose? Thanks for your help!

    • @davidg.9478
      @davidg.9478  4 роки тому +1

      If one green light is off but the one beside it is on as with the rear wheels... that means you have a light buld blown out. The two front wheels and two rear wheels will always be on or off together unless a bulb is blown. Not a big deal but if it bothers you, youll have to replace the bulb. The code 35 is the front wheel engagement actuator and switch. Watch the area in the video related to the front of the truck, specifically when i talk about the "actuator" and the "switch". Dirty switch plug, bad switch, dirty actuator, or one of the two vacuum lines that goes to the actuator need to be replaced.

    Hi David. My Montero 3.2 DID from 2000 with 4M41 motor has a blinking light in all positions except 2H. But it is very special. f.i. if I switch from 2H to 4H I hear the system under the car work and it drives 4 wheels. But after about 10 seconds I have the blinking light and the 4 green light switch off. It keeps 4 wheel drive after this. But now it is not possible to switch to another position. I have to switch off the motor and start again and then I hear the system work for the position I have chosen. Again blinking light after 10 seconds except for 2H. In these 10 seconds all lights work properly! I supose that the old owner has not used the 4WD very much. Thanks for your help. By the way, I found code 23 yesterday. ABS error codes can trip the Activ Trac Super Select system. So i would look into the ABS codes and in addition you can look at the 4WD systems codes to ensure the errors are in response to the ABS system. In your case you need to get tje bigget picture to determine the cause. If i get a chance i will look up the abs code definitions later today.

    • @davidg.9478
      @davidg.9478  5 років тому

      Well, step 1 is to pull the codes. The front blinking lights is going to be one of the two main differential codes. I cover most of the causes for issues under the front of the truck in the video so i would start looking at that after you know which codes its throwing at you. The center light may be a result to the front lights blinking so i would put my efforts into fixing the issue causeing the front lights and then if its still blinking the center at you in low, then focus on addressing that.

      The flashing green light indicate an issue with the front tires like i mentioned in the video. If the center yellow light is flashing it indicates an error or issue in the system. Your rear light should always be on unless the yellow center light is blinking. If no lights are on, then that means you've probably blown the light bulbs for the two rear wheel light indicators in the display. I didnt cover that, but i would atempt to replace the bulbs.

      Code 33 is one or more of the switches not reading correctly. If you change modes it might clear up, but if it keeps happening youll need to change a switch most likely.
      Avoiding 4LLC, does it go away in one of the other modes? If you can tell me what modes it goes away and faults in, we might be able to rule it to certain switches and you can first check the plugs.

      After change the sensors, do you still have code 33 and center blinking light? Im going to guess you changed to after market switches and not OEM. The non-oem switches aren't as good, and sometimes you need to remove the washer to get them working correctly. The 5th gear issue won't be releated to the 4wd Active-Trac or transfer case. You may have unpluged something for the transmission while changing tbe sensors. You should get a normal Check Engine light code for transmission issues. I would check that with an OBD reader for clues on where to look to fix that.
