This is one of the best aquascape tanks I've seen, simple but you've used the space well.
Great work buddy
Thanks for 8 years ago not bad
I’m so happy to know that because I don’t wanna use CO2. Thank you so much for the information. I’m starting my tank right now. Wish me luck.
+2000DB intro
Yeah cool it down
I’ve learned more from your vids than any of the huge, big fishtubers. Keep it up, man!
I doubt that but thanks definitely check out the newer vids if you haven't
@@jjaquariums I’ve been watching them slowly since coming across your channel last week, this one just popped up on my main feed while I was making dinner. lol. Great stuff!
Nice Monte Carlo carpet without CO2! I am trying to do that as well!
@Green Plan Yes but it is a much slower process.
Agree
@Green Plan no way...only with aditives
Yes that's why I did this series was to prove you can, it takes so much patience but it can be done
This is such a beautiful tank, really well done 👍
Thanks its meh to me bc I know I can do better but thanks I'm glad you liked it #FISHFAM
Great video! I was wondering how you would clean the debris on the bottom of the tank as you probably can't use a python cleaner
No you still do use a python cleaner check out my video called how to gravel vac a carpet and thatll show how you do it
This is a beautiful tank. This is what I want mine to look like haha
Thanks
Mine is something like this
But his is way cooler
Great video, big help. I'm just getting started off. And I'd definitely like to go a similar direction as your tank. Im a first timer and I'm considering a monte carlo. Also what other eat to maintain plants do you recommend for the mid and background?
Bacopa, s.repens, crypts, ferns, ludwigia
I'm a high school teacher and just melted in the 7th minute lol, very informative video took such a cute, young turn
Thanks Definitely check out the channel now
@@jjaquariums I'm all over the (very handy) playlists that apply to my project, taking notes! Tons of practical, unpretentious newbie-friendly advice--really great work. Thanks for the reminder to subscribe, tho.
Nice tank! I haven't experimented with ADA aquasoils. When I tear down and start making new setups I will try them out for sure. So far I have used UNS controlsoil, CaribSea Eco-Complete, Fluval Stratum. Ive found a mixture of Eco-Complete with either UNS or FLUVAL is my favorite setup. Otherwise my pH is super low. Thanks for this video!
I just used soil dirt and sand on top its fine especially doing without co2 just lighting and water temperature
Amazing looking tank and good video, thanks allot
Thanks #FISHFAM
Super nice tank there cheers friend
Thanks
Hey. Great vid . I’m looking to get a light for my new tank and I can’t decide what’s a good one as I’m going for ur look ( with the carpet plant) which lights best I looked up the FLUVAL SE plant. And it said it’s $300 what do u think?
What i had on that tank was the finnex planted plus se but the best looking lights are twinstar, ONF or ADA
Co2, has impact when you have a taller tank. Small tanks like that are still close enough to the surface of water to get that co2. I have a 75 gal, so I'm going to see how it works out. I'm using Ada. Also todays cheap LED are like 2 years ago fluvals.
Can I have an active substrate of aqua soil capped with sand
Yes
So it took 1 year for all seeds to germinate ??
@@playboy6622 seeds are a scam they aren't aquatic plants they die off within a couple of months or less, you buy them in tissue culture and yes 1 year
Wow!!! Love the stone get along with the plants!!!!
Thanks
so how did you start your carpet? did you start from seeds or
Hi! I'm planning to have a carpet in my tank. Got a mixed substrate. I used a thin layer of aquasoil then sand in the top(used some root tabs). Will it be enough? Thank. Great vids btw.
Ya that will work
Awesome tank! But my head actually hurt watching because of the shaking of the camera. Lol!
Sorry videos 10 years old
Great looking tank. Do you add gravel above the soil or leave it as soil only?
Thanks pal
soil only bc I'm adding a carpet right on it but if some areas are gonna be exposed then add another substrate like gravel or sand
Awesome video! Thanks for the help!
Thanks
What plant do you have circling the rock on the right? The lightgreen one. Beautiful tank btw, well done
S. Repens
Aquarium co op easy green? What is the dosage? Apply weeky?
Those lights are sweet
Thanks
I have a 1 gallon planted fish bowl(no fish, might put snails or shrimp in later) thinking of doing a simple bonsai scape. What would work well as a carpeting plant? I don’t have expensive lighting, just clip on aquatic plant lights and fluvul stratum. Great tank btw, love your vids!
Just depends on what you like but dwarf hair grass or monte carlo are easy
I just got a fluval 3.0 and some fluval stratum. I really want to try to achieve the carpet look. Hope this set up works for me 🙏
You have a great light and a decent substrate so you should have success
@@jjaquariums yeah right now I have nothing in my 65 gal tank. I'm trying to research everything before I go planting stuff right away. I just want the carpeting in some areas so not the whole floor. I went to one of my local fish stores and they had some in a pot and the guy was like yeah it may not do so great without CO2 so he kind of killed my hope lol
How is it now?
I have monte carlo in my tank, i planted about 30 of them, and for some reason they dont spread and make a carpet. They just kinda stay there and grow upwards. I have a fertile substrate and good lighting
What light?
Awesome tank congrats and make it without CO2 has more recognition, what photoperiod do you have on this tank?
This was 5 years ago but it was 8 hrs
nice tank, can you tell me what are those green or yelow fish in your tank, they are really nice
Very nice tank! Apart from Monte Carlo, what are the other plants around the rocks ?
S. Repens
Awesome tank man! Looks heaps healthy.
I have a 20 gallon long tank, what light would you recommend for a shallow style tank. It will consist of low tech plants such as anubias nana petite and various moss.
Buy 2 of those suggested. Will give you good results
Awesome vid, really helped! Quick question, I've already got a full substrate of fine gravel, is there any alternative to soil? I was thinking of just adding root tabs or something.
Thanks!
Ya root tabs will work
Could you tell me where you got your seeds from? Any seeds I can find are not aquatic. And this video was very helpful thank you!
Don't do seeds they die off within months, its all tissue culture now, best sites I like are glassaqua.com or buceplant.com or aquaforestaquarium.com
@@jjaquariums can you grow from seed and transplant them into water after while going without co2?
They are more than likely will melt away once flooded
@@jjaquariums oh well 🤷♂️ thanks for the quick reply man!
Which carpet plant is this??
How do u add root tabs to an already full carpet ?? Let me know if possible !?!? Thanks for u awesome vids 😎
You just gotta shove it in there so there'll be a hole but then you can kinda patch it back
I am absolutely inlove with the look of a pretty rock formation and lush green carpet in front. I was wondering if a pearlweed carpet would be good for a first timer like myself. I really want Monte Carlo but I'm not too confident in trying it with my setup and have read that Pearlweed is more forgiving.
So far my specs are
Fluval Stratum Active Substrate
Fluval Spec 2.6G /10L tank (About 11-12 inches deep)
10W 7K LED light, it's about 1W per L and from the lighting guides I've read is considered high light at least for the size of my tank.
I was thinking of using a good macro and micro fert like Thrive and Seachem Excel liquid CO2 to help with shortcomings and also having an ample amount of light.. I am even contemplating a dry start method if that's recommendable as well.
Pearl weed is more of a stem so it's gonna be harder to maintain a carpet of that, and monte carlo is super easy, and even if you do a dry start even better bc it'll then grow full in your tank before you fill it up
@@jjaquariums Thanks! I'm leaning more and more towards doing that MC dry start everyday haha Do you recommend getting cultured tissue MC online or should I just go to a local reputable pet store? My tank is pretty small and it will be easy to fill just the foreground with these. I'm hoping to plant them heavily but not too crowded.
My fallback method has been Marimo moss balls morphed into carpet. haha
@@repzaj1234 monte carlo TC would be the best option just bc its safer and will take dry start easier
Can you list the plants used? Nice setup, planning to make my tank like yours.
Bacopa, S.Rens, anbuis petite, monte carlo, java fern narrow leaf
@@jjaquariums thank you!
Beautiful tank! What kind of fish?
Was kinda random during that video, black neons, glowlights, cherry, otocinclus,
Great looking tank ❤️ what is your photoperiod time?
8 hrs
So I don’t know if I got a good substrate I just got the imagitatirum brand one that said it was good for plants. I just started the tank last night and watched this video after. I just planted my seeds do you think I should invest in a fertilizer now? Also I’m going to take your advice and get a good light can you drop a link for the one you have? I like the way it sits above the tank
Yes your gonna need ferts eventually, I dont know about the seeds and how long they will take bc I've never done that, I always buy potted or tissue cultured, and if your not running co2 be careful on the dosing of the ferts bc a lot of algae will happen so only do like half the doing if that and your substrate should be fine but that type will run out of nutrients pretty fast like maybe in a year so you'll eventually have to add root tabs but I use ADA substrate which is the best but also very expensive but it's so good and heres the light link below
www.amazon.com/Finnex-VL-CRB36-Planted-Customizable-Aquarium/dp/B079P8M3DZ
JJ Aquariums this is super helpful, Last question. To answer your question I’m not running co2, and I’m getting ready to purchase a fertilizer so I will def be careful. Do I need any other products to get started?
@@meechgolden one other thing I would recommend which in my opinion and lots others is a must would be Seachem excel which is a carbon product which acts like co2 so when you dose it and your ferts your not gonna get algae bc even if you dose very little your still giving little bits of food to algae which will just make it grow, so if you had co2 then excel is not needed but with out it excel is a big help
JJ Aquariums dude my seeds are starting to sprout man! I wish I could send you a picture. You gave the best advice. I couldn’t be happier man. Thank you so much. Once I finish my setup I will have my gf and fellow UA-camr SuperAshley127 to post a video with a mention for you.
Hey bud. So I my tanks is fully carpeted and but I’m noticing quite a bet of the white web like algae growing fairly quickly now that I’ve added my fish 4 neon tetras, 2 bleeding heart tetras, and 2 silver hatchetfish. I also have one plecko but he’s not maintaining the tanks as well as he did in my 10g since moving him over to the 20g. I’ve already done a 1 water change bc my filter altered me that it was time. But I’m nervous about using the siphon on my carpet. Any suggestions? Should I maybe get another algae eater. Wish I could show you images or video
Solid video. Nice job
Thanks #FISHFAM
Great videos! I'm so glad I found your channel today. I would LOVE to see amazing, talented aquascapers like yourself do a planted turtle tank! I have two razorback musks, one yellow-bellied slider, and one pink bellied sideneck. They are all still really small (1-2.5 inches) so for now my 40 gallon is fine. It's really natural looking, and I love it. But I would really like to add more plants and make it look even more like it came straight out of a pond! Any/all ideas would be so appreciated!
Ya ive never done anything with turtles would be cool tho, definitely check out my channel now to see my new setups this tank isnt up no more
@@jjaquariums I definitely will.it's 1:30 a.m. here, in Orlando Florida, and I just happened to wake up and couldn't go back to sleep. So I hopped on UA-cam and came across your channel. I will definitely be going through more of your videos tomorrow. Can I ask how long you've been doing this? I grew up with little goldfish and betta aquariums, and my dad had a six-foot-long saltwater aquarium. I don't remember how many gallons it was, though.now, I'm 32 and have a four-year-old son. So him and I are getting back into the hobby together. We both love it so much already.
@@SENelson0313 I'm 18 been doing this for 10 years now
@@jjaquariums Wow. You sounded young, but 18! That's super impressive. You absolutely could be one of the greats of aquascaping if you keep at it! I can't wait to see what else you put out there!
Awesome tank. I already bought CaribSea Eco-Complete. Will this work for carpeting plants? If I can't return it would you recommend buying a finer grain soil and putting on top of Eco complete? Thanks!
Ya eco complete doesn't contain a lot of nutrients atleast not long term, so for a carpet you'll be adding root tabs over time
@@jjaquariums Thanks buddy. The video was super helpful.
Have you tried just using Oliver Knott “plant iron sand” using this on two tanks I’ve just setup with scoria
I just use what I know works. I'm not big on experimenting with stuff, I aquascape for a living and if you look at my channel now you'll see that, I just don't want to run into problems especially with clients
What are those plants around the rock on the right side of your tank?
S. Repens
I used a very cheap organic compost from the hardware store. No co2, plants were pumping for about 3 yrs, but seem to be slowing now.
I wonder if the moderate bioload helps create waste/compost that breaks down and feeds the plants, or do soil substrate tanks have a certain lifespan before they need a complete re-substrate.
The plants are healthy and look fine, just not as vigorous any more.
Videos on my channel..
Yes the substrates over time become nothing like the ada I used will only last 2 years and then you'll have to out root tabs to get the nutrients back or just start over
Can i have the substate covered with gravel instead of sand?
Yes
Nice video! I'm trying to get into the planted tanks and would really like the MC as my carpet. Would the Seachem excel be enough if don't put in CO2 injector? Thanks
Excel is not co2 its a algae killer, I would invest in a real co2 setup if you want the best results
Great Vid. How many hours is your light on? And what is the Kelvin?
8 hrs and I think the Kelvin is 7000
I wonder if corys would thrive in there, would the carpet hinder their foraging or no?
They would be fine
Hi JJ, great video. Where did you purchase the grass seed and what's the name for it? Thanks.
Aquatic plants aren't grown from seeds you buy them either potted or best tissue cultured, the seeds they Try to sell online are scams and aren't Aquatic which will die within plants, look up tissue cultured aquarium plants and you'll see, the plant I used for carpet in this tank is monte carlo
@@jjaquariums - Thanks JJ! I am new at this, so I appreciate your suggestion.
what parameters, lights and how many liters have this tank?
75 liters, Finnex planted plus SE. 7 PH and 0 across the board with ammonia and nitrates
@@jjaquariumsThank you for your reply, do you know what kh you have and how many watts and lumens the lamp has?
@dominiq6127 this was 10 Years ago, I think that light was like 20 watts and KH is like 10
@@jjaquariumsThank you so much
Do you know any good carpet plants that can be in a gravel tank
None will survive unless you have a nutrient substrate
@@jjaquariums oh ok thanks
Nice video! I’ve a monte carlo carpet fully carpeted by co2 injection but now I don’t have co2 anymore with me so how do i maintain my current carpet?
Nice ya its harder but you can do it for sure
Is it possible to dip Glossostigma seeds in substrate under gravel in a full water tank?
Do I have to empty the tank for 15 days?
I've never seen anyone do it with a full tank I dont think that would go well.. it could definitely work but I dont think it will work as well .. doing it dry is the way to go with seeds and just keeping the substrate moist
Hi, Are you using any water clarifier product? I saw an ad on Facebook about a water clarifying item and the ad shows clips from your video showing this exact tank.
I am not
Great video man. I noticed you were stammering a bit on some of the subject perhaps if you write some type of script beforehand it might help?? I don't know just throwing it out there

@@jjaquariums man thanks for the fast reply didn’t expect that 😂 just recently got hooked onto your channel been binge watching thanks for all the info
How often do you change your substrate? What's your recommendation?
I never had this tank setup long enough to have to redo it, but with ADA soil like I have you get about 2 years out of it, but you still wouldn't have to change it bc you can just had root tabs
It's looking good bro bro!!
thanks
How did you plant that carpet? I grew mine, then added water and most of it turned dark green and died
Good soil and light is key
How does your water look this crystal clear? Do you use purigen?
Nope just lots of biological media and little bit of sponge
@@jjaquariums so good filtration? Thank you
Another way is too but so many tissue cultures the tank is already carpeted ahahahahhahaha
Do you think it could work with a 3.0 Fluval light and Fluval stratum substrate and a DIY CO2 system?
Yes
Can you grow a carpet with fluorite clay substrate
if it's from the start yes it's just will be harder to do
What is the name of the plant beside the right stone? It is nice.
S.Repens
Music was so loud at the beginning through mt headphones omg
what's ideal substrate depth for carpet?
at least 2" but me personally I would go 3"
you use two hang on back filter?
Yes two aqua clear 50s
What do you think of tropica premium ferts? Also should I use diy Co2 I’m not very good at diy but I suppose I could maybe do it is it worth it?
Yes the only two ferts I use are tropica or ADA, both very good, and diy co2 just becomes a pain and it won't be consistent like a actual system would be which could more harm then good
What you think about only seachem fluorite black as substrate with some root tabs?
Thatll work
Hi there, nice tank! how big is your tank?
20 gallon
What’s the plant clump in the back left, and the group surrounding the rock on the right? I’m planning a ten gallon scape and would like to know. Thanks in advance!
Bacopa Carolina, and S.Rens around the rocks
JJ Aquariums thank you! 😊
Once fully grown in are carpet plants very well rooted and hard to uproot? Not that i'm going to be rough with them but want to do a turtle aquarium with these and i just want to check they aren't really easily damaged. (Small turtles by the way not red ear sliders or anything like that)
Sorry never saw this comment but yes once rooted and the carpet thickens up in stays down pretty good
Can I plant well on Dernelle Shrimp King Active Soil?
What are the recommended non-CO2 plants?
Yah as long as its a nutrient substrate, and non co2 plants are things like anubis, ferns, crypts, buce,
There’s a lot better options it’s made for shrimp so it does not have many nutrients but it still has abit
1000th like
Dang nice
I JUST GOT A 125 GALLON AQUARIUM AND I'M WANTING TO CARPET MY ENTIRE BOTTOM WITH MOSS AND A COUPLE PIECES OF MY DRIFTWOOD CAN I USE REGULAR GRAVEL OR DO I NEED SOMETHING DIFF ON THE BOTTOM FOR IT TO GROW CORRECTLY?
Use planted substrate
You will definitely need a planted substrate like mine which is ADA Amazonia soil, but theres other good ones as well
@@jjaquariums THANKS FOR LETTING ME KNOW
My monte carlo hasn't grown in 2 months its exactly the same small patch in the gravel.
Monte carlo is not gonna grow in gravel unless you put in root tabs, monte carlo is a high nutrient plant so it's best in a planted substrate like ADA or tropica and having co2 or not makes a huge difference to, without it monte carlo takes forever
@@jjaquariums wish i knew that earlier instead of wasting money..what about java moss? will it grow in gravel on a net pad
O ya Java moss grows like a weed, doesn't require much
Can you give me list of the plants your using on this tank wanna learn aquascaping
Bacopa, S.Repens, monte carlo, abnubis petite java fern trident
What is the name of the carpet plants you have that are so small covering the bottom? Thanx
Monte carlo
Is aqualife lamps still good? I had one long time ago when they where not LED.
Ya you would have to look at the specs I havnt seen them personally but I know there not bad at all depending on what your trying to do
Hey soz for all the questions I have the time to do about 3 water changes a week should I do it and also will dennerle deponit mix capped with dennerle scapers soil do a nice job ? The only place I can get Ada in my country ships from China with £18 shipping so that’s out of the question
Ya that soil should be fine if it's not ever enough you can always put root tabs, and for water changes if your doing 3 times a week make them small like 20 percent or 30
I use sand, I just add root tabs and osmecote pellets
Nice that works! #FISHFAM
Baney, I'm wanting to only use sand with the tabs, too. How long have you been doing it with no problem?
@@chriss.3476 root tabs will only last you so long maybe a couple to three months if your lucky so you shoudnt run into any problem as long as your doing everything else right just need to keep up on replacing root tabs so your substrate doesn't lose nutrients which will kill off plants quick when theres not enough
Nice setup btw Wat fishes are those?
It was kinda random at the time of that video, black neons, glowlights, cherry carbs, otocinclus
Hi! May I know what clip on filters are you using? Also is a skimmer on the right corner?
Think those are aqua clears
Sorry didn't see this comment yes these are aqua clear 50s and the skimmer is a eheim 350
