Always amazed at how careless some boaters are about etiquette. Glad you had a good time. And as a skipper of a 26, I appreciate all you have done to Stoked.
You're ready for Little Harbor now. Put it on your list! Mixed feeling about that boat that anchored right next to you. Definitely no go if either of you were single hook. Double hook--maybe but still not comforting to have someone that close to you. Especially a charter boat...
The fog only lifted in patches but was heavy most of the day until after 5pm when the air show was over but it quickly returned in the evening. I can’t imagine sailing through that fog at night. Scary! I don’t have radar.
@@sailingsole I don't have radar either. I was near the outbound lane around 4:30am when I heard a ships blast. Couldn't see a half mile away. It was on a collision course so I spun around to port, and circled behind it. I love leaving Dana early morning, but maybe not going into the darkness like that again. The way home wasn't too foggy till I was 8 miles away from Port. Arrived back just after dark. Glad I went early, as Saturday in Avalon was around 80°and sunny
Awesome trip! Looking forward to getting back out to the island soon myself. My buddy is pushing me to explore Santa Cruz Island and maybe a few others soon. Any thoughts on heading up there?
Thanks Josh! Yes, my thought is DO IT! Just watch the wind closely as you go further north. I’ve only been to Santa Barbara Island for an overnight nap (not a real stay) and Santa Cruz Island, both on Mark boat from Keeldragger. I need a proper trip to Santa Cruz Island for a few days. There are a lot of good anchorages.
Thanks Andy, the everyman sailing channel. Check out Mike Santis, he sails around Sweden, Norway etc in a 28 footer. Just a thought, and I wasn't there, but you may have had the headsail sheeted a bit tight. Sometimes a reef and a few rolls can balance it a bit better without loss of speed.
I think you’re right. It sure if you heard what I said in the video but I likely should’ve reefed or struck the main and rolled in the head sail a little. Maybe the AP could’ve done its job. Thanks for the tip, I’ll try it soon and check out that channel. 🤙🏼
How big is your headsail? I've been thinking about downwind sail plans for single handing. Pole out the jib? Use a dedicated downwind sail? Any options you like?
My Genoa is a 135 I believe, maybe a 120 and I’ve never used my pole once. I need to get hip to using the pole in lighter winds. Wing on wing is nice if you’re dead downwind, other than that I just ease them both out and fiddle with the sails until it’s right. Lol
My wife and I took lessons with Chuck at Marina Sailing in Newport Beach. Michael and Chuck are great guys, check them out and let them know I sent ya if you’re in the area. Good luck! Cheers!
@@sailingsole or when i used to go to the movie theater with my x and we would sit in the back couple of rows for reasons... and someone would walk in and sit right in front of us with their kids 😡💢

Thanks Ken. I have a lot of projects planned for ol’ Stoked. You’ll see soon enough!
@@sailingsole I’m in town on October 19 if you need an extra hand. I’ll bring the beer!

I do want to do Little Harbor but I need to go scope it first.
You can have mixed feelings if you want but it was too close for me dawg.
@@sailingsole it can get a little dicey, esp w/ a west swell.
Dice deez 🤣 🤙🏼
Well done Andy! 👍💯
Thanks! 🤙🏼
Great video! I'm looking forward to buying a Catalina 30 in the future. John
I love it! Keep in touch. I’d love to see what you get when you get it. Cheers!
Looks like so much fun!
Thanks Brendan. Next time you’re out in Cali you should go out for a sail with me. 🤙🏼
@@sailingsole dude that would be amazing. I'm still in Cali just up in San Luis Obispo county and come down there quite often. Yew!
Oh nice. HMU on IG. I need your contact.
Sporty sailing! I have the same boat. Mine is an 86. It's those kinda of days that make me want to just keep on sailing over the horizon.
Yep you know it. It always gets good at the last few miles. 🤙🏼
I have a '86 in Dana Point
So simple so fun 👍🏼
Yep no frills this week just a great sail home from the island. I’ve got some good stuff planned ahead. Stay tuned!
keeping it real means something else nowadays on youtube.
What do you mean?
Looks like a great trip out and back!
I'm heading down on Thursday, not sure if it'll be a maintenance trip or a sailing trip yet (or motoring trip).
If you leave in the morning it’s always a motor. Choose wisely grasshopper! 😂🤙🏼
@@sailingsole Have you thought about the 2025 Newport - Ensenada at all?
Just got home from Avalon last night. Beautiful weekend and crazy fog in the dark.

Looks like a great time. I am planning on heading out to the Island on the 19th.. Give me a call (VHF) if you are out there.....
The island is always a great time, summer, winter, I’m there!
Andy, awhile back you mentioned you took sailing classes. Was this with a sailing school or private? I’m ready for classes anyone you would recommend?

dude out there anchoring up like one of those guys that stands at the urinal right next to you when there are 4 free to your right
Exactly! Like when you park in the back of an empty parking lot and come out to find a car right next to you. 😂
