I love everyone who commented on Paul ' s phrasing of "bloodstone" and "lightstone." If you would be a tad bit more observant, you'll notice the Alpha tag at the top left. Originally, glowstone and netherrack had those names. So, sorry to have to let you all know; but, you're wrong, he's right. Then again, you're right in your own right. Ahaha. Anyways, be sure you know your information a little better before you go correcting people.
I remember this was one of the first Minecraft videos I watched as a kid. I was only in elementary school and some how I had access to UA-cam to watch this. I hadn't seen anything like this game before that point, and it truly captivated my attention. I was literally blown away. Thank you for giving me these memories to look back on!
Thanks Paul, I felt weird going to the nether with all these strange noises, this surely helped. If the zombie pigmen are peaceful, how do they attack, they might use the swords for fighting!
1.) At this phase in development, netherrack was called bloodstone, 2.) The nether had only just been released, so he didn't know what anything was called, 3.) This video was uploaded on November 4th. The nether and Minecraft itself was a new thing.
This is the birth of the Spy Chicken craze among his fans like me. He had mentioned them previously but this brought about an ongoing joke. It feels weird to come back almost three years later. Ahhhh, Alpha.
yo paul got an idea! a new series in the nether! you get saplings and some minerals and go to the nether and destroy the portal behind you! you should try it, it might be kinda hard and you might have to use invedit but it would be kinda cool
@Blobapopo7 here's a tip of advise: did you hurt the pigmen? if you didn't, try going outside. they're passive, and only attack when attacked. do NOT attack a zombie pigman, they WILL attack in large groups( and zombie pigman within 100 blocks of the one you hit will attack you) if you did hurt the zombie pigman, then you, sir, are most likely screwed.
paul you should do a how to survive and thrive in the nether series! So we could like build a lil house and small villages in the nether! like this to the top
I build one portal, go in and gather some "Blood stone" or "Netherack" and put it behind the portal after I disable the portal. So when coming in it looks like you will go into the "Underworld"
This is just a assumption, but, the spy thing at the start, when you kill the chicken-spy via burning flaming death, I thought of the game Team Fortress 2 because the Spy in the game can turn invisible but can get turned visible by a quick burst of flame from the Pyro. It also says on the Spy's wiki page that it hates Pyros.
Each block you walk in the neather is multiplied by 8, so if you walked 2 blocks in the neather you would've walked 16 blocks in the normal world. Portals spawn in the normal world depending on how many blocks you walked in the neather.
a trick for watches and compasses is that if you craft it, but dont take it. It will tell you the time/spawn direction. u then can get the materials back
You should make a fort or lookout so you are protected and you should also try to get the lightstone by doing the jump and place thing like you do to the signal things
When i first went to the Nether, i thought that Ghasts would be like 1x1 sized. And wouldnt do much damage. Well, two of those lovely creatures proved me wrong in about 15 seconds.
Try making a nether portal and don't put any torches and a ghast will appear. And the red stuff is netherak and the glowing block is glowstone. If u mine 9 glowstone dust u can pack it together and make a glowstone block.
A billion ghasts shooting at you and making noises that could scare the terminator, and you're just chillin' back keeping calm. I'd be running around screaming and firing arrows everywhere.
hey if you want to come out the same portal put torches on the 2 top corners on ether side of the portal. both the left and the right top corners. it worked for me.
i decided to go here on creative mode, so cool! i made a giant four room, two story house out of glowstone. i also set it to easy so the ghasts wouldn't try to kill me.
wow i miss hearing about alpha. before i had minecraft it sounded so cool! i mean, netherakk was called blood stone! how cool is that. honostly the game has goten more complex and easy and at the same time hard and fun! i miss the good old days even if i never played in them. :D
@FloatingWok nah, got used to it, i want to ge here (nether) build a home and harvest glowstone in low ceilings and if it spawns on the ground. build a tnt canon, cover up the lava using redston or bloodstone, whichever you wanne call it, and kill gahsts which i think can give up to 3 or 4 gunpowder... though if i think of it, you can't build a canon cus it requires water... oh well
i have a good idea for what happens when you place a portal, you get blinded for one second and your world gors into flames and the floor is netherrak the stone stays around the portal in a 10x10 raidus and your trees stop burning and all burnable items :P

2010 truly Old School Minecraft
It's nice how we got to watch you play instead of a list
You have to love that he manages to keep running commentary while under aerial bombardment.
Creeper: "That's a very nice everything you have there!"
You: "Oh yeah it sure i..."
Creeper: "SSSSsSSSsssSSSS"
One of the best intro's ive ever seen
You have the best agent smith impression ever
nobody:
minecraft alpha ghast sounds: earrape

Most of the time, I was just shouting "BUILD A GODDAMN ROOF!" at my screen.
Then again, I'm to much of a chicken to even go down there.
So different watching this now and his more recent Minecraft Tutorials.
Also, glad to see where the whole "Spy Chicken" started. Pretty awesome.
I crapped mah pants just watching this
Thanks Paul, I felt weird going to the nether with all these strange noises, this surely helped. If the zombie pigmen are peaceful, how do they attack, they might use the swords for fighting!
I’ll just say one word and it’s NOSTALGIA :U
1.) At this phase in development, netherrack was called bloodstone,
2.) The nether had only just been released, so he didn't know what anything was called,
3.) This video was uploaded on November 4th. The nether and Minecraft itself was a new thing.
Lots of rude comments
Kids could be looking at these comments :T
Dreamcloud23 Unless they are kids themselves
Innocent kids makes sense
Starting a video talking Matrix's dialogues to a chicken... how lovely
loved the Agent Smith at the beginning
Just loving your imitation of Mister Smith from Matrix at the beginning
That intro for the video was one of the most awesome things ever. :D
I keep on telling myself this is the last one i'm gonna watch tonight but i keep watching more! : P
This is the birth of the Spy Chicken craze among his fans like me. He had mentioned them previously but this brought about an ongoing joke. It feels weird to come back almost three years later. Ahhhh, Alpha.
And here we are 12 years later
when he first went in there and that loud gast made a noise it scared the crap outta me because i wasnt expecting to here it
he is at war with the ghasts, and so calm.
i love it how you remain so calm while your being destroyed by ghasts or set on fire :D
You said the Mr.Anderson thing! I've been waiting for that!!!
Oh man i remember that intro with the chickens! Iconicccc
Ahhh great times there... Bloodstone xD now its netherack .. Glad that paul continued his serie of tutorial..
yo paul got an idea! a new series in the nether! you get saplings and some minerals and go to the nether and destroy the portal behind you! you should try it, it might be kinda hard and you might have to use invedit but it would be kinda cool
When those Ghasts are agitated, it's THE scariest thing I've ever seen in a game. Minecraft is the best game ever made.
@Blobapopo7 here's a tip of advise:
did you hurt the pigmen?

Sooooooooooooooooooooooopooooooooooo excited!!! Getting minecraft tomorrow !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i love how calm he is while all of the ghasts are attacking....imagine brad down there XD
Just saying, in 1.0 the bloodstone is called Netherrack and the lightstone is glowstone and it breaks like glass and drops dust
wow loved alpha 1.2.0 That is why I am doing a back to the future series on it
"Oh Mr. Undersand, you disappoint me" - Very good Paul. Lol
That was a great Smith impression :D
i like how the compass in the Nether goes crazy
Lol, excellent agent smith impersonation. I think the chicken was not able to do more than just not speak, when he was disintegrated.
his videos really help
Damn the nostalgia
In the background you hear ghasts screeching, but Paul is just happily continuing to talk!

i love the screaming. its like a lullaby :)
I just love how the clock gives you the finger! xD :D
a trick for watches and compasses is that if you craft it, but dont take it. It will tell you the time/spawn direction. u then can get the materials back
Love the start XD
and the ghast noise is so FREAKIN SCARY!!!
I was watching this at night!!!!
Man, how are you -not- freaking out during that... attack? I would jump every time they screech xD
@thapro122 keep in mind this he's playing in alpha so some of the rocks such as netherack and glowstone. were not named yet they had quick names
The agent smith impression was off the chain
On November 4th 2010, the "Spy Chicken" legend was born.
i love when he says "sounds like a skeliton"!
It may be because im loco, but who knows.
BEST.SMITH IMPRESSION. EVER.
It drove me crazy how long you took to make a roof.
Loved you smith
The beginning of spy chickens
i love the blocky look! :D
I never knew I would reach a moment when I missed creepers skelletons and spiders well here it is I miss them
best intro ever!
tis is a neat video and the noises haunt me
You should make a fort or lookout so you are protected and you should also try to get the lightstone by doing the jump and place thing like you do to the signal things
You are not a miner, your a freaking fireman saving the day for thoose poor pigzombies!
thanks u rally help me i cant stop watching you xD
When i first went to the Nether, i thought that Ghasts would be like 1x1 sized. And wouldnt do much damage. Well, two of those lovely creatures proved me wrong in about 15 seconds.
4:47 The watch started going crazy!
that first 25 seconds made me lol beyond belief :'D
Couldn't stop laughing at the beginning. "Bawk!"
lol its hilarious at 5:36 when he tries to talk over all the portals sounds and screaming
Try making a nether portal and don't put any torches and a ghast will appear. And the red stuff is netherak and the glowing block is glowstone. If u mine 9 glowstone dust u can pack it together and make a glowstone block.
LOL! Awesome intro! Absolutely loved it, haha.
Those sounds ghasts make are creepy! Good thing I wasn't planning on sleeping tonight.
BEST INTRO EVER
"Let's go down and say hello to our Nether region." XD
as long as u hav armor (iron armor at a minimum) and plenty of arrows and a bit of food, your pretty ok for going into the nether.
@Thespeedking0098 this is a old version of minecraft. It was most likely called lightstone in that update.
A billion ghasts shooting at you and making noises that could scare the terminator, and you're just chillin' back keeping calm. I'd be running around screaming and firing arrows everywhere.
this vid was made 2 years ago, he is not a noob anymore.
hey if you want to come out the same portal put torches on the 2 top corners on ether side of the portal. both the left and the right top corners. it worked for me.
i decided to go here on creative mode, so cool! i made a giant four room, two story house out of glowstone. i also set it to easy so the ghasts wouldn't try to kill me.
Hey, this was posted on my birthday!
with blood stone , if u were to bring some back into the real world , can u make a torch of some sort or anything to that effect?
@5MRORANGE not yet :D i think i read there will be flying islands in one of the next updates
the ghost of the youtube creepers return!!!
LOL at the zombie pig just chillin' and then gets set on fire xD
u can also use a sword to deflect their fireballs like a light saber, and it doesn't waste arrows
how do you shoot and eat so fast?? is it because of the version, or is there a shortcut so you don't have to click and hold?
you probably already know this now but back then because the game was in alpha you didn't have to click and hold to eat or shoot a bow
wow i miss hearing about alpha. before i had minecraft it sounded so cool! i mean, netherakk was called blood stone! how cool is that. honostly the game has goten more complex and easy and at the same time hard and fun! i miss the good old days even if i never played in them. :D
Episode 21 of How To Survive and Thrive in Minecraft-Paul Soares cracks up and talks to a chicken called Jordan Henderson.
Legendary intro
the sounds of the ghast is really freaking me out
@FloatingWok nah, got used to it, i want to ge here (nether) build a home and harvest glowstone in low ceilings and if it spawns on the ground. build a tnt canon, cover up the lava using redston or bloodstone, whichever you wanne call it, and kill gahsts which i think can give up to 3 or 4 gunpowder... though if i think of it, you can't build a canon cus it requires water... oh well
"It is through their foes, not their friends, that cities learn the leason of building high walls."
Do you see how that quote relates to this?
I pee'd me pants when you set the chicken on fire XD
i have a good idea for what happens when you place a portal, you get blinded for one second and your world gors into flames and the floor is netherrak the stone stays around the portal in a 10x10 raidus and your trees stop burning and all burnable items :P
@cooltroop2 ok THANK YOU SO MUCH! i got it yesterday and i havent had any type of ad in my face since!! thanks
You can use the swords to deflect the fire too.
