I wonder how many people I'm gonna anger with this video essay lol? (Big thanks if you stay through and actively discuss!)
Could Mighty Morphin Power Rangers nostalgia be HOLDING THE SHOW BACK? Is the show just hopelessly trying to recapture the success of Mighty Morphin with the same blueprint from the 90s? Is Mighty Morphin bad? Why is Power Rangers bad? Has the show flopped?
TV writing has changed so much in the last three decades. Power Rangers has shown that it's grown up and that the fans have too. Older fans are... well... older, and younger fans have a higher standard of quality thanks to better-written children's media. But in the last decade, the show has regressed. Everything from cringe fart jokes to bad acting. And it may be due to the original run that started it all.
I go over how Mighty Morphin may be overrated and is causing the show's decline by using 90s TV sensibilities to write shows in 2022 (Beast Morphers and Dino Fury). Have they stood the test of time? Or does the show age poorly?
NOTE: This video was written, edited, and completed (with the exception of minor corrections) before news broke of JDF's (Jason David Frank) passing. The content in this video is unchanged from before this. Please take care of yourselves and seek help. Thank you Tommy, rest in peace.

It's worth pointing out that Dino Thunder was a good example of calling back to MMPR *well*. Tommy returning wasn't perfect but it did work well and develop him as a character. Trent's arc mirrored the original Green Ranger saga but with a new spin on it that made it feel original, plus with the added edge that *That green ranger was there to guide the Dino Thunder Rangers through it this time*. Obviously DT was early Disney, one of the better periods in PR history, so the writing quality was Decent to Good especially compared to Hasbro.

@@mintbari I even think the MMPR could've been done well in Megaforce, I'm mainly talking about the Goseiger adapted first season in this. The main problem with that in my opinion was that the nostalgia it did include was either lazy or superficial. The first episode "Mega Mission" was obviously meant to be a callback to the franchise premiere "Day of the Dumpster" to the point they even copied various lines from the original. The problem, they often did so the point it didn't make sense in the context of the new characters.
Emma stated Kimberly's famous line about how "The helmet does mess up hair!". When Kimberly said it, it made sense. She was the stereotypical Valley Girl. So of course she'd comment about how the Ranger helmet would mess up her hair. By contrast, Emma is a granola child who loves nature and regularly bikes through the dirt and bug infested woods, whilst wearing a helmet. Why would she care about how it messes up her hair?
It's a shame Jonathan Tzachor had such a narrow minded view of what made "Power Rangers" a good show. Even though MMPR focused on the skeptical of the stock footage fight scenes over good characterization and writing of the heroes, they at least had personalities and the actors did adjust them over time as they gradually became more comfortable in their roles. The Megaforce cast clearly wanted to do the same, but the management wouldn't let them.

I do have pet peeves about Dino thunder as Mighty Morphin’s spiritual successor/legacy season, which was how the other Rangers treated Trent, it wasn’t Trent’s secret to spill that (censored because spoilers), it should’ve been red ranger and not a lab accident that saved him from being evil and Tommy, as someone who has been in Trent’s shoes before, should’ve been to a fault levels of sympathetic towards Trent.

Nostalgia can be a good and bad thing, but it feels like it's been over relied on in the past few seasons. On one hand, yes, connecting current stories with the old is cool. Who doesn't like to see classics brought back? On the other, it feels like it's showing a lack of confidence in their own work. As if they think it can't stand on its own without having that nostalgia bait.

@@mintbari It makes me miss the 'darker/serous' story threads they used to have. I get it's a kids show about superheroes in multicolored spandex, but at the same time, the slightly darker mysteries from say something like Wild/Mystic Force, or the literal killing off of a ranger in Lost Galaxy. Admittedly, they were still cheesy, episodic, and predictable, but it felt like there was heart to it. And it took itself extremely seriously, nonsense and macguffins included.
Now it's just Formula: The Series™. They take the formula, but don't think it'll sell, so they just say, 'Hey what's *[insert previous ranger actor]* doing?'

Having just rewatched the first seasons, to me the step up in quality even from MMPR to Zeo was crazy. The characters in MMPR were one note, whereas later on characters weren’t always friendly and understanding no matter what. Characters became more fleshed out and the stories got more substance. MMPR is definitely the most iconic but as a show it doesn’t hold up as well as the seasons that came after (up to a certain point of course).

Kimberly went from having no interest in even being a Ranger at all and wanted to get back to the mall, but by end of her run she was committed to it and didn't want to let her teammates down for the sake of her gymnastics. That was the direction the series needed to go in, but now we're back in 1993 in 2023, as if nothing changed ? SMH !!

When it comes nostalgia, I think Shuri in Black Panther 1 said it best. “Just because something works doesn’t mean it can’t be improved.” there are certainly things from the past that really do work out and help out the Power Rangers but there are ways to improve the show going forward.
I honestly liked the 2017 movie with making our heroes have flaws, including Zordon. they were teenagers who did have things going on in their lives that they had to wrestle, something very real for teens. I especially felt for Zack in that movie, a kid who acted out, but it was only a coping for his concern over his sick mother’s well-being. I found that very real and was able to appreciate him and all the other rangers a bit more .
Was that film Perfect? No, but I felt it was a good step in the right direction using what was familiar but giving it a new twist. It’s a shame that they aren’t going to continue with that because it was a good idea.

The Point of what I was referring to was that the movie had good parts to it. You had teens who had to rely on each other because they couldn't handle the enemy alone. Similar to how each ranger seemed to be able to cope with their personal strife by opening up to each other. I also liked the fact that despite what they accomplished doesn't mean they don't have more to work on. I especially liked that these kids weren't trained fighters and had to learn and earn their stripes(or in this case their ranger armor) through training and teamwork, a streamline throughout the entire Power Rangers Franchise.
As I said a while ago, it's not a perfect movie but they could build something good on what they were setting up. Somethings that I hope are borrowed in the shows and the apparent ranger movie reboot that maybe happening.

I feel like this is the exact reaction people *think* Sonic fans are going through with Frontiers, just because the last decade has been an inconsistent roller coaster with the brand. People forget that so many of the other games are still well loved, but they go "lol look at those Sonic fans liking a game that's still kinda buggy just because it's not downright unplayable" when those same people don't notice that Frontiers has a rather well-written story that only has a couple minor flaws with it, the supporting characters for once aren't entirely useless, it has ambition leaking from every corner and has the best Super Sonic content in the entire series bar none let alone the masterful music that goes with it.
People who love to dunk on Sonic fans think we're going through Dino Fury when it's more accurate to say we got Dino *Charge* that at least knows how to take risks in the modern era.

Akaranger and the other gorangers show up now and again, but its mostly limited to specials and movies. with sentai, once a season of the show is done, its done. Aside from post season movies and the odd crossover, thats it. Lately ever since last month I have gotten into Super Sentai, what started from me wanting to watch the power ranger seasons that never where ended up with me falling in love with a completely different product than the one I grew up with.
Watching shows like ToQger have shown me just how bad Power Rangers has been treated after the end of the Disney Era, I fell off by the time of Samurai and I thought it was just a part of growing older, but nah, it's just that they really couldn't evolve....somehow the series based on being adaptions of already made footage ended up being even more reliant on himself than the original inspiration.
Gokaiger and Zenkaiger are what Power Rangers have tried to do ever since the Neo Saban era but with way more respect of itself and the prior seasons they are using, they are willing to make seasons that undeniably feel like the originals without losing the actual point of always having a new team on a new time, the originality of every Sentai season was such a breath of fresh air after everything that happens in Power Rangers, and I think the biggest example of how this overreliance on MMPR has brought down the franchise is the constant reuse of Go Go, showing how non confident they are on being separated from that little show that hit it big, and it deeply saddens me to see the complete 180° that are both franchises compared to each other.

MMPR was a monster and still is those departments, so the lean in is understandable. We had a good opportunity for change with the Live Action Power Ranger movie. Unfortunately, although I thought the cilvilian elements were fantastic, the Actual Power Rangers content was too short and lacked the cheese that makes Power Rangers so enjoyable. It's a tough sell for modern audiences too. Although I'd enjoy it, I don't think most people would accept the combination of more sophisticated drama and the goofy camp that I believe would be required to create a Power Rangers series that is both more sophisticated and faithful to the Sentai/Power Rangers brand. You either have to commit to the goofiness and create something totally out there, or reinvent everything from the ground up in order to give it more dramatic weight (which given the reliance on Sentai footage is very unlikely).

This is what i always say about PR everytime i say "i dont care anymore because its the same show since the 90's"
Im not saying the Disney Era and the beginings of the Neo Saban era were bad (i love SPD and Time Force a lot) but as soon as Samurai aired and i watched the first few episodes i dropped the series entirely, because it was MMPR all over again.
Look guys im going to be real here, this show was never deep to begin with, the characters were formulaic as heck, and the plot paper thin, but that was enough *IN THE 90s* for today you need to do more than that, and i know people will hate that i bring up this example but its the competition to Super Sentai in japan, Kamen Rider.
Kamen Rider is divided in different eras, Showa, Heisei and nowdays Reiwa, Kamen Rider fans for the most part are always eager to see the next show and never thought Kamen Rider Ichigo should be the defacto way of how Kamen Rider should be, and why is that? because they accepted the changes and nuances of the show and because they allowed Kamen Rider to mature as a show, try new gimmicks, new plots, new ways of doing the titular Rider and expanding on the concept of what makes a Kamen Rider be a Kamen Rider, is it fighting for justice only? its because out of revenge? it was born with the gift or curse of being a kamen rider? he is the only hope in a world in disarray? can we change our past? its ok to accept that we need to let go of the past and accept the future? all this questions ARE what Kamen Rider is each of them have all this at their core as part of their characters.
The Rangers used to at one point, and it should had been like Kamen Rider evolving that deep and complex way of seeing this characters in new and interesting ways even if they are weird and unorthodox in nature, but Saban looked at the ratings and freaked the hell out and hold on into nostalgia way too much sadly.

I think this video confirmed most of my grievances with the modern power rangers franchise. It rarely takes risks and characters are very one-note and lack the proper depth and development to keep me coming. As a result, I've turned to Kamen Rider/Super Sentai to see if it's an better and though the cheesiness and one note characters still remain, the stories overall are much deeper and take more risks. Take Lupinranger vs Patrarangers. A great example of rangers who are on opposing sides yet neither is portrayed as completely evil or good. Even Kyurangers taking a page from RPM (whether intentional or not) and having rangers be on the offensive, not defensive since they are reclaiming an entire galaxy from an overlord is something I didn't realize I missed so much. The fact that we may never in our lives see something as grand as that in power rangers shows how unwilling the showholders are to take risks. There was a time when I wanted to make my own Power Rangers story. For what it's worth, I didn't intentionally pull from Mighty Morphin. And if I did, I at least wanted to try and see what storytelling potential there is for modernizing the concepts. Great writing is knowing there's a good concept and giving it the proper execution it deserved. And this is coming from a man who despised Megaforce. I realized that it had good ideas and I wanted to take advantage of it. In the words of Comic Drake, "There are no bad characters, only bad writing."

I think the problem really is the fan base. You have to understand these companies invest into things that are profitable. Now I do agree that things should change. I've been watching pr since the og rangers arrived. But as time moved forward I noticed that the newer shows didn't have the same appeal. That's not saying I didn't come across newer rangers that I liked. The thing is none of the new rangers have spawned a major fan base as big as the original. I watched my cousins and other little kids become obsessed but quickly moved on to other things. The newer shows don't hold up to the titan that is mmpr. Now I know alot of people will disagree. But toy sales and memorabilia says different. I know people will say that doesn't matter and that those shows haven't been given the same treatment. I would disagree. Look at all the original content that spawned from those rangers. How so many different stories were told none of them drew the same crowds and reactions. As long as there's money to be made. These companies will invest in what works. If you disagree. You have every right too. I would suggest you use your wallets and purses to prove that point. Fans of the og rangers always have and we always will.

I totally agree that current seasons and even seasons of the past 10 years have really focused on the nostalgia of the original which is holding it back. The Japanese series are all standalone series Yes they might have their crossovers but they never focus on a past season for nostalgic reasons if there's a theme about vehicles or dinosaurs they don't revert back to a pass season. Long comment and kinda ranty here. Sorry if whomever reading doesnt follow im just kinda going off a stream of consciousness here:
Im honestly kinda scared about how Cosmic Fury is being handled. Not like its all doom and gloom but i dont quite understand why they felt a need to carry on the cast of Dino Fury when its a completely different type of show (knights vs. A space opera). Well thats not totally true. I do have a theory that they're working in stages to eventually be able to produce a full on season of PR by themselves with using little of the original source of Super Sentai. Hell, they may be trying to no longer adapt sentai at all, or at least.be able to go and make original seasons if they lack source material they think will work out.
The last few seasons of super sentai have had things i already knew they'd try to change (the heavy inclusion of suit actors both in and out of a ranger costume but it made sense given the context with series like Go-Busters and Kyuranger, and the heavy use of CG for the ranger forms of some characters like in Donbrothers) and they might feel like itll be a bad idea to even try to do so.
I just hope they dont try to make all the characters human-esque aliens and also try to make it work with less rangers for Cosmic Fury just to be able to have this weird continuation attempt work out. I havent been keeping up with it so i may be needlessly worried but still, i just want the series i loved as a kid to still be there and dont want it to keep doing this nostalgia bait, overly kiddy type of show.
Sentai has kind of been getting overly kiddy too. And yes its a show made for kids but it still had an appeal to fringe demographics and people whom were older but still watched. Hell, Sentai rangers used to be killed off fairly often, and we even had a few ranger deaths in PR too. Not that those make the show more mature alone but they didnt feel a need to be overly hand-holding and trusted the viewership it feels like.
All in all i just hope that, whatever happens on either side of the Pacific, we can still see some quality Tokusatsu and have something of substance over just bland ways to sell Megazord toys. I am optimistic but not overly so.
