  • After a lot of questions regarding the seawing fins I dive in a lot of the videos . especially if it is possible to do various fin techniques with them we thought its time for this clip.

    Hello Achim. I understand that this is an old video and the purpose of the video is to show that the fin doesn't matter all that much. Whith that said, how does this compare with the go sport fin? In terms of a light travel fin for single tank. Sorry if you have covered that in a different video. This one got recommended randomly by UA-cam. Thanks

    So I went to both of the local dive stores near me and looked around for fins. Both of them had regular Seawing Novas, but neither of them had any Gorillas. They said that there is very little demand for those since they are "very hard" and most people dislike that.

    • @CoastalDevelopment
      @CoastalDevelopment  6 років тому +3

      Lol - "most people" are unfit and lack proper finning skills. With a little help from the marketing department of the manufactures they try to compensate that by unsing fins that have no resistance in ther water and therfore no proper effect but are sold as" maximum performance with minimum effort". one does not have to be a rocket sientist to figure this is BS.

      Thanks. I am 100% with you on that. I am currently still working on my CMAS * and don't own any open heel fins at the moment (as we aren't allowed to use them in the pool). So I am still looking around for my first pair. Is there any particular Fin I should be looking at?

      @@twoknife scubapro jet fins, they are a little heavy but perform great and will build up your ankle strength. And youll never have to replace them, at least not for a long time. Currently using a pair from the mid 80s, still look and perform like new.

    As always, nice Video Achim. But you forgot an important part: Those orange (and the light grey) Fins are the Seawing Nova "Gorilla". Which means they are stiffer compared to the normal Nova. I only tried the normal ones so far and it was extremely wobbly... didn't like it at all. Guess i'll have to try the Gorilla. Until then i'll just continue using my Mares Quattro for Wet- and JetFins for Drysuit diving.. :)
    Oh and, did you try the Deep 6 Eddy Fins? They are a jet fin style leightweight fin.. and they come in orange. :)
    I'm just to cheap for the $100 plus $70 shipping to germany...

      Hi, cool - you made me win my bet - I was sure this one was coming up within 24 hrs :-D
      Anyway - my point was hat it is not about the fin - it is about proper skills. It might be a bit boring - but I can show all of this with any fin. I recently had a students who insisted that it is impossible to perfomr those skills in the Mares Plana Avanti Quattro (which IS a horrible fin in my opinion). Well, we switched and guess what...
      Thanks for the comment - I will check out the Eddys ;-)
      Safe diving!

      @Duglum666 8 років тому

      Always happy to help. ;)
      I guess it is totally possible with almost every fin on the market.. but when it comes to "the right tool for the job", would you really put the Novas (Gorilla or normal) as on par with let's say a classical jet fin? I'm not trying to argue with you, i'm just genuinely interested in your opinion. That being said, i have to find someone with Split Fins or even Force Fins... and try kicks with them. ;)

    • @CoastalDevelopment
      @CoastalDevelopment  8 років тому +10

      Hi, well - Splinfins and forcefins are really the worst possible option someone could have.. I have been playing with a lot of different fins as I taught so many divers and when they struggeled we switched fins a lot of times :-)
      The nova obviously came through my connection to Scubapro and I was interessted in it due to their weight - traveling a LOT and usually with extensive camera gear started playing around. Now they are my regular fins when single and wet.
      I did not want to give a recommendation for fins I wanted to make divers aware that it is not their gear that makes them perfom good or bad but it is their skills and nothing else.
      Thanks for your interesst and comments.

      You are correct. I own same fins in XL for drysuit, and an older pair of regular black Novas for warm water. Not a huge difference but noticeable. Love them

      With mine (quite new) is taking a bit of practice. But my buddy told me that when I do regular flutter kicks I usually leave him behind, and that he won't even attempt to catch up with me to not consume extra air...

  • @chiranagheorghitaeugeniuth98

    nice job there. but.... there is a but... thise nova will break in thecarticulated area when you will need them the most to perform. So.. i would carry and pay for extra 3 kg than have the fins break on me.

    Why is it that scuba divers never use a real flutter kick?

    • @CoastalDevelopment
      @CoastalDevelopment  7 років тому +3

      Because with the Flutter kick, only a part of your energy is transformed into a forward movement so you waste energy. Second, you push some of the water downward which means you stirr up sediment if close enough to the Bottom. Plenty of bad examples out there to watch unfortunately :(

    • @Jakelol1980
      @Jakelol1980 7 років тому

      But freedivers use it because its so effective and we go fast forward and channels on the fins make the water go back and not in any other direction.

    • @CoastalDevelopment
      @CoastalDevelopment  7 років тому +4

      Hm.. and where do freedivers go? along the bottom or up and down in blue water? ...

    • @Jakelol1980
      @Jakelol1980 7 років тому +2

      CoastalDevelopment - InnerSpace Explorers - ISE Depends on if your doing horizontal distance or depth. When your doing horizontal distance its super importent that all the water is pushed back and no were else. Good freediving fins got huge flanges on the sides of the fins to prevent water going to the sides or up or down so it will only propel you forward.

    • @markvincentcocjin
      @markvincentcocjin 6 років тому +8

      The most rational reason is, every type of fin is used differently from one another.
      You freedive fin's flutter kick won't work efficiently with a paddle fin. In fact, a split fin also has a different style of flutter kick from a paddle fin. And before anyone makes it a case of scuba vs freedive, you should know that both disciplines use whatever works for them as evidenced with the different fin designs used in scuba.
      Scuba divers are not in a hurry to go where they want to unlike freedivers. Freedivers do not want to waste time traveling from the top to the bottom which is why their fins are designed for long flowing strides. It's like comparing the movements of a helicopter to an airplane.

    Where do you keep your weights? Is it just all in your backplate?

    • @CoastalDevelopment
      @CoastalDevelopment  6 років тому +2

      HI Grady, I try to stay as close as I can to what I call a "balanced rig", so i basicllly need almost no weight at all. The little bit I use if I need it goes on the trim weight pockets that are on the tankstraps, as close to the plate as possible. That way you have em close to the center of gravity and can put it up or down to also help your trim. hopw this helps

    • @gradyboger382
      @gradyboger382 6 років тому

      CoastalDevelopment - InnerSpace Explorers - ISE thank you so much for the quick reply. But can you explain in more detail what a balanced rig means and how to create one. I had some of these, and so far I love them. But you have to adapt a bit your kicks. They do float, but it is nothing major when descending. The fins won't be dragging your legs up or anything like that.
