BEST Value MTB Upgrade? OFFSET BUSHINGS on the 2020 Orbea Occam

  • Come join me on a local ride testing Burgtec Offset Bushings on my 2020 Orbea Occam H30.
    Surely the best way you can spend £20 upgrading an Orbea Occam, or for that matter - any full suspension mountain bike!
    Slacken the head angle, improve descending, lower your BB height, and simply remove it if it's not for you.
    Hope you enjoy my rambling and riding.
    Cheers
    Dan

    Just ordered a set for 2021 clash.
    Dont forget....when you buy these
    Buy an extra set of the poly bushes.
    Metal ones damage hardware when it fails.

    Didn't even know about these offset bushings. Great to know in case I find myself in need. Trying to decide between the H20 or H30 currently. Sizing is the other hard part.

      H30 but with MyO upgrades! I got the H30, with Fox DPX2 rear shock, upgraded brakes and better tyres for around £2300. I then sold my stock wheels and bought some upgraded ones for about £60 more. The H20 would have been £2500 without even having the better shock, and that single part is an absolute no brainer!

    Awesome video and nice looking bike!
    I also bought an Occam H30, and so far have replaced the wheels (DT XM481 rims on 350 hubs with 54t ratchet), brakes (Magura MT Trail Sport) and grips (DMR Deathgrip).
    I come from riding an Orbea Alma (XC 100mm hardtail), and I've been getting more pedal strikes than I can admit.
    Watching this video has made me think about increasing my forks length to 150mm just for the raised BB height, as I actually don't feel like I need more travel. What are your thoughts on that? Cheers

    • @ADanandHisBike
      @ADanandHisBike  3 роки тому +1

      How long have you had the Occam? I definitely got a few pedal strikes at the start but quickly got used to where they are and which positions to avoid etc
      I probably wouldn’t do the fork travel on its own just for pedal strikes, as there definitely are lower bikes than the Occam and I think it would be better to try and adapt your riding.
      I quite liked the fork at 150, but a week later I fitted the offset bushings (which bring the BB straight back down to original height) and I’ve not had a pedal strike since!

      @@ADanandHisBike tbh I've only ridden it about 140 miles, so might aswell give it a chance. How well has your travel increase gone? Any downsides?

    • @ADanandHisBike
      @ADanandHisBike  3 роки тому

      @@alexandervalenzuela1630 maybe just have a ride where you really go crazy on roots/flat corners/rocky stuff and get used to the pedal height. I did opt for the shortest cranks available so that may make a slight difference!!
      But as for the travel increase, I do love it. I’m sure it’s not absolutely necessary, but with the bushings and the extended fork, the bike sits so well!!

    I have a question for you..I have an occam 2020 h20..for the rear is it possibile to put fox x2 instead fox ...?
    And what stem did you use i in this video...?
    Thanx

  • @kruuuber
    @kruuuber 3 роки тому

    Thank you so much for this one Dan. There's not that much tinkering info on the Occam out there, hence this is much appreciated. I've got myself the m30 (fox34 140mm) a month ago and I'm curious to try this out.
    I see you've also swapped to a shorter stem and bars with more rise. How do you feel that changed the handling?
    Best, Kris :)

    • @ADanandHisBike
      @ADanandHisBike  3 роки тому +1

      So sorry I didn’t notice this sooner!!
      I have a few fun plans for this bike. There’s a shim you can swap on the DPX2 which will give about 148mm of rear travel....
      I’ve ran these burgtec bars for years now. I love them. I have super dodgy wrists so the rise/roll helps ease pressure. I’ve found 42.5mm stem is my favourite. This video is a 35mm Burgtec stem. New one is 42.5mm Unite and it’s ace!!
      I think the extended travel meant I needed to shift some weight more forwards, so I dropped the stem by one spacer and lengthened it.
      I definitely think 50mm is too long for me!
      Thanks for coming to my TED Talk!

    • @kruuuber
      @kruuuber 3 роки тому +1

      No worries mate. Haha, love a proper TED! While you were composing your script for said talk, I got a Renthal 33mm and I’m happy with the way that feels. Because of your video I also fitted offset bushings, great tip! Have a good one!

    • @ADanandHisBike
      @ADanandHisBike  3 роки тому +1

      @@kruuuber that sounds perfect! The rise on the bars definitely helps your body position.

    Nice! 170 or 175mm cranks? I am 6'4 and wondering if 175mm are better. Don't like pedal strikes though...

    • @ADanandHisBike
      @ADanandHisBike  4 роки тому +1

      olivierhacking so I’m 6’1, not particularly long legs, but I went with 170mm and won’t look back. I still got loads of pedal strikes to start with, coming from a more relaxed geometry budget bike. Now I’m used to them and never get strikes. The bike climbs amazing so I wouldn’t think the crank length would be completely necessary for power, it’s just going to be down to how the crank length suits you ergonomically!

    • @olivierhacking
      @olivierhacking 4 роки тому

      @@ADanandHisBike Good to know, thanks Dan! Also, I see you have the alu version and not carbon. I am still debating between them, weight difference seems to be more than 2 lbs... Is price the main reason for your choice?

    • @ADanandHisBike
      @ADanandHisBike  4 роки тому

      olivierhacking sorry mate forgot to reply to this one!
      I have no idea regarding weight to be honest. They’re not massively heavy bikes in alu, but weight is never a huge factor for me apart from rolling weight. I added some (slightly) lighter, better wheels, as the stock ones aren’t great tbh. Price was the main factor. My build ended up at £2368 in total, I then sold the stock wheels for £80 less than I bought the replacements for, so £2400ish. I think it’s a mega bike for that price!! I would definitely buy H30 over H20, but obviously carbon would be wonderful if I had the money

      @@ADanandHisBike I just ordered the M10! Super stoked. Also got 170 cranks. Debating on adding a 150mm Lyrik with 0.5° offset bushing or a 160mm DVO Onyx without bushings for some more pedal clearance... I've seen others happy with a 160 fork on it.

    • @ADanandHisBike
      @ADanandHisBike  4 роки тому +1

      There’s a site devoted to them, called www.offsetbushings.com and there’s also Burgtec (check their website too). Both companies are really helpful and will probably already have experience in which bikes they work with and which sizes to buy if you give them an email 👍 My lbs fitted them for free since they stocked the part. It was a 2 min job, but they needed a little press tool to remove and replace the bushing.

    • @ADanandHisBike
      @ADanandHisBike  4 роки тому +1

      gee rozz I’m not clever enough to answer properly! What I would say is you probably don’t need to. I would just fit the one anyway, that way you’re giving yourself an extra 0.75ish of a degree at the head angle and slackening the seat a touch. I wouldn’t really want to go slacker with the seat angle really, and I couldn’t honestly tell you if the bushing would fit or not! Easy job to test though, just let all the air out of the shock and compress 👍

  • @iliyadavoodipour258
    @iliyadavoodipour258 3 роки тому

    It's not that much about head angle. The huge difference comes from the lower bottom bracket.
