Grace L, Well, actually around that time it was very common in Germany to make girls of certain age the gift of nutcracker as it meant they would soon have their own household/family. As far as I know.

This is such a great video. I wanted to share a story for anyone passing by in this comment section. This year I played a solider and a flower in the Nutcracker. I assist a ballet class at my studio, and so I knew some of them would be coming. I came to the class I assist the week after Nutcracker(since this class is once a week) and one of the little girls ran over to me and said that she saw me in The Nutcracker. Always imagine you are dancing for a little girl, because they will look up to you.

I think one of the best way to explain in keeping a slower pace is to go back to remembering public speaking and oral presentation in school: You are speaking (dancing) faster than you think (due to nerves or whatnot). Slow and steady.

One thing I got from drama class at school was to practice your facial expressions in a mirror, because you always feel like your expressions are bigger than they actually are, and you might think your mouth is wide open or you look sultry or whatever, but until you see it you can't tell.

Dear Kathryn, would you ever consider doing a video about taking off make up, especially stage make up? I get acne easily and don't wear make up in daily life to avoid outbreaks but every time I have a show coming up I know that by the last performance my skin will be all bumpy and red, no matter how thoroughly I try and clean my face. Do you have any advice? (Sometimes I also just want to put on some make up when I'm going out without having to worry about the aftermath, I'll admit it ;D)

These are great even for non-dancers from a movement perspective. Even some actors tend to over-gesticulate on stage.

I'm an animator and I've never taken a ballet class (well except when I was really little) but I still found this video interesting and helpful! When I'm animating a pantomime scene I get the same advice from my professors, to always have a dialogue in my head when I am animating my character. I should be able to pause an animation and say exactly what my character is thinking in that moment. Just wanted to leave a comment to say that your videos are also inspiring to non-dancer artists! I love doodling ballet dancers in my sketchbooks and your channel makes me want to take a class to better understand what I'm drawing :)

My ballet teacher choreographs all the performances we do herself, so everyone gets a dance. The 4 to 8 year old children are mostly for example animals like frogs or pigs, and it's very cute.^^
The next performance is next November, and we'll dance Aurora in her version. One of the groups in which I am dances a moon cycle in the first scene, and I'll go on stage first, everyone behind me. My ballet teacher said that I'm basically "La Luna". :)
Also I'm one of the good fairies, and there I'll go on stage first, too.
Oh, and I'm a cook in one scene. xD
I'm so excited for next year! :D

These things are so true. I am not a ballet dancer, but I have done theatre and was known at my school for it. I am not the best, but what she said at the end about becoming is true. Some characters are easier to become than others, but if you can just be your character rather than pretending, it makes a big difference.

Excelent advice, Kathryn. Let the arms and legs tell the story for you! Use your port de bras, your hands and epaulement and keep your faces as natural as possible! Ballet is about body expression, not about facially-imposed unbelievable drama.

Just wanted to thank you again for this video, I had a supernumerary role in La Scala's Don Quixote from last week (two more shows this weekend) and it has helped me tremendously. Though you talk about leading characters I've never been on stage for Ballet before and I kept your tips in mind when we performed, it encouraged me to be aware of what I was doing on stage and take initiative of my presence contributing to the scenes. Much appreciated Kathryn!

Thank you for this! My company is doing a performance of Giselle at Easter and I'm playing Myrtha (I don't know if that's how you spell her name 😂) In rehearsals my expressions are fine but I never really knew how to fully act her out without looking super fake, this video really helped and I'll be sure to think of these things in rehearsals tomorrow 😜 On this subject, I saw your Giselle make up tutorial and I was wondering wether I should apply the same kind of make up to Myrtha or if I should kind of add a few things to really stand out, what do you think? 😊

    Help!
I will go to the entrance examinations for the ballet academy in munich. A year ago I was there and there I was told my turnout and my feet are not good enough. At this time I had no idea of ballet. Since then I have 6 times in the week training and private lessons with a professional dancer from the Bavarian State Ballet. He said to me I have all the requirements and I am talented. Now I wanted to try it again at the ballettakademie in january.
My question is whether in the grand plie my hip has to be rotated 180 degrees and when I lie on the back and do the frog have my knees to be on the floor ? If I do the frog and someone push me down, my knees come to the floor, but if I do it alone, I am missing about 5 cm. Am I not accepted then?
My feet make a line with my lower leg. Is that right?
sorry for bad english but pease answer me!!

Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the struggles and madness in this world today, God is full of justice, mercy and love.
Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be
destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans
. The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom.
If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. He will help us through the struggle, the stress, and anything we experience in the world. It's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him through His power (not ourselves, we need Him to help us as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction).
He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if you had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place.
He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it.
He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way.
Christ says in John 16:33: I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace. In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.” [My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.]
    - (AMPLIFIED version)
NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER. Regardless of what you've done or what you're going through you CAN make it through Jesus.
    X
