    Good advice. I've recently retired so don't need to make a ton of money on selling prints. For me, it's more about having a reason to take photographs. It becomes pointless if no-one ever sees them and I do get a buzz when I have sold in the past.
    The one thing you didn't mention is that you have to be brutally honest about how good your pics are before you try to sell. There's so much out there from people who got their first camera this year.

      Thanks John, I don’t feel the work has to be exceptional to sell, at least not on a small scale . I feel people like to be form someone they know , someone who can share their story and the story in the images.

    Good update, Justin. One of the issues I have found is that there are so many marketing channels available and getting your work seen to sell is the key issue. On a website, having good SEO is *essential* for this, and this is something that I continue to invest in. Without good SEO, you're howling in the wind. However, to compete on any sense of a level playing field, this work almost becomes a full-time job, and so many of the 'pro sites' undoubtedly have professional web designers doing this work necessary for them. All of this becomes part of the hustle. I sell a few prints, and I'm fortunate that I don't have to rely on photography to pay the bills, however, I do need a place to exhibit my work beyond the odd stuff I put on Instagram or with local cafes. For me, it's all about the love, man!

      Well said Paul, I don’t know how helpful SEO is for selling prints but it is important for getting noticed through searches . I feel for prints it’s a personal thing for many people, they want to buy work they know from someone they know , at least that’s my two cents.

    20 seconds into this video and I just wanted to leave you with some comfort in telling you that I skipped the 1st search result that had 250k more views simple because it was a major click bait title. Something like making $4000 in 48 hours selling photography prints
    I want a clear and honest perspective, and I believe you will provide that! Either way, even if both are justified, then I gave the smaller video a shot and the smaller video needed the view more!

    Great information and inspiration to pick up a camera again! The saturation is what drove me out of photography. my weakness was the learning curve of post production. All anyone needs now is 2000$ and post production computer skills. This has diminished and devalued all of our photography skills. We need to be really good at networking and marketing ourselves to sell our skill set and art as opposed to the mass Lr filters. For the new photographers; don't sell your files! sell prints!

    Great video and I agree with most of what you are saying. I just browsed your website and could not find how to order any prints. I see this as a problem with many photographers. I sell lots of prints, it is my main source of income. The first step is have your website built around selling prints. The second step is learn about SEO and utilize it. The third step is sell large prints. I rarely sell anything less than 24x36 inches. Most of my sales are 30x45 inches and larger.

    • @AskMOTT
      @AskMOTT  Рік тому +3

      Thanks for the feedback Tomas. I’m definitely not willing to dedicate a full website to prints but I can see the benefits for some. The link you mentioned was messed up for a day while I was tweaking my websites and store but on my main portfolio page it’s now clearly labeled Prints. Large is nice , my sales are pretty all over the place for sizing .

    How can one look exactly the right words for the correct paper size for aps-c sensor. Example I have d7200 with a sensor that is 23.5 x 15.6 mm. I have been looking for what he said regarding his wording, but I have not found the right chart or the right wording to look what sizes are good for that aspect ratio of my sensor.

    Really appreciate this video and the original. I noticed you are selling digital downloads of some of your prints on your website. Have you created a video on doing that versus/in addition to your physical prints? I'm curious how you made that decision - which prints to sell as downloads, how or if you protect your art, and how downloads sell versus the print on demand.

    Hi Justin, your videos have been helpful for me as I fine tune my website. I've been trying to get along with the Printique plugin, but I'm having an issue where the product displays a terribly low resolution photo even though I've uploaded a high quality tif. I looked at your website and you don't seem to have the same issue - I was wondering if you found a workaround within Printique or if you ended up manually creating the products?

    • @AskMOTT

      My pleasure, glad you found the episode helpful. I never had the low resolution issue but I did decide to manual create the products because I just found it easier for a few reasons.

As I'm also selling different products (digital downloads, courses, etc), I'm curious about one thing on your website and I couldn't find it anywhere else: do you have 1 shop with different categories? Or do you have separate shops for all your item types? Thanks, love your content!!

    A thought. Most Pro photographers like yourself say that they sell few prints. But your website is geared towards selling products to other amateur photographers and I think most of them believe that they would prefer to take their own versions.
    Maybe if you separated your print sales to a website that only sells your (excellent) prints, you would would be more successful?

      @AskMOTT  Рік тому +2

      My link for my prints is on my main portfolio and the just links to this store actually so that I save costs on only having to pay for one e commerce site . In the past I only had my portfolio site and sold prints through that , no difference for me .
