This is the story of Nicholas Barclay. A very real child who went missing and has still not been found. Why change the names? He has never been found. Missed opportunity to put his face out there. Also, there is a documentary called the imposter all about the real story that is interesting enough without the added drama.

If no permission has been granted to do a story, they have to change names and certain aspects of the story such as the ending. Did the real child who is missing have a brother who committed suicide? If not, it's just another way to avoid lawsuits.

Half way through, this story is 100% identical to 13 year old Nicholas Barkley's story. Why not use the real names? This case has been famous for many years.

    • @missymarie2698

I totally thought this was that case too!
and thought gee, they didn’t attempt to have the actors look remotely like the real peeps and the didn’t even get his age, when missing correct! 😂
Wait...wtf- even his going to the park originally to play basketball and asking for a ride and the brother telling him to find his own way?
      Ok- this is weird.

I think they put false names to be able to have some liberties to add subtle details to make the story more dramatic, which is kind of a cheap thing to do considering there's a real victim in this story. Oh well what can you do..

This is the Nicholas Barclay story, and a horrible version of it. Please watch the documentary called Imposter to get the real story. You can hear from Nicholas' sister--the sweetest person I've ever seen interviewed--and the rest of the family. It took a lot for them to open up on camera, and their story should be told with respect. They're good people.

    • @Muirmaiden
      @Muirmaiden 2 роки тому

I recommend you read the 2008 article, "The Chameleon" by David Grann. There was a lot that the documentary (which is very good) didn't get into. CPS had been contacted on Nicholas's behalf because his teachers suspected child abuse; his older brother had a history of domestic violence and was even arrested for being aggressive with a police officer. There is also evidence that the mother knew all along that the imposter wasn't her son.

This IS the Nicolas Barclay case.
Why did they change all of the important detail about this case?
He was 13 when he went “missing”.
They never found his remains despite everybody being able to put together that the brother killed him.
    Why change such important details?
This wasn’t even LOOSELY based on his case.
What a shame cuz maybe had they reported it properly, somebody may remember where the brother put his body!
    Not cool.

2 years on a teenage boy can result in some rapid, massive appearance changes.
What I don't get is why they didn't just do a DNA test on him before letting him join their family. This happened in the mid-90s, and DNA testing, while not AS good or fast as it is now, was ABSOLUTELY a thing.

Now I know why Real Crime changes all the names and locations. It's so you don't get sued for libel. As everyone in the comment section has noted, this is the Nicholas Barclay case. The mother did not go to jail and this case remains unsolved. The real facts of this case are so bizarre why bother altering them so much? You just end up discrediting your channel. You know people are fascinated by true crime, and you know how much money a successful UA-cam can make, but you're too lazy to do it justice. That's the real crime.
