Today we are going to West London’s Kensington Gardens to visit and feed some wild but very friendly parakeets. 🦜
Parakeets are native to Africa but there are around 50,000 in Britain. Nobody really knows how this non-native birds came to the UK.
A spokesman for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds said: "There’s no evidence to show they have a negative impact on native species. But you should always feed birds the right type of food.”
Our secret sweet spot for parakeet bird watching is located in the heart of Kensington Gardens, just a minute walk from the Peter Pan statue. They are not hard to miss as you could hear their chirping when you get to the location.
I brought an apple 🍎 with me but feeding the birds is totally optional. Just watching the birds gives an equally joyful experience and helps with balancing the Park’s wildlife.
Hope you enjoyed this short clip, showcasing London’s friendly parakeets. Join me again next time! 🎥

Which is the best time to visit this place….Please guide
i have a lot of ringneck parrots as pets i got blue ones white ones yellow and green
Does anyone actually know where they all came from? Because they are everywhere
Hi Marcus! It is still a mystery to date. But there are a couple of theories:
1. One rumour is the birds escaped from the set of 1950s film The African Queen, which was being filmed at Isleworth Studios. This theory came to be as Isleworth, in the London Borough of Harrow, is one area where lots of parakeets are often seen.
2. Several birds escaped during the Great Storm of 1987.
3. Musician Jimi Hendrix released a breeding pair into the wild in 1960.

The first colony of parakeets was spotted in 1850 in Thetford Norfolk. They are a hybrid of two subspecies, one from the Himalayas the other from South India. They spread across the UK and their numbers rocketed about fifteen years ago. They live mainly in city centers and are classed as a pest in the countryside due to the damage they do to orchards and vineyards. There is little evidence that they are harming native bird species but this may change as their numbers are increasing. Their numbers are increasing across Europe as well. They are a major problem in Hawaii and measures to control them have failed.
Wow! That is soo cool! I never knew there were parakeets at Kensington Gardens! I have to check this out! What kind of seed do they eat? As I was thinking of buying maybe wild bird food.
Thank you very much for this upload! A BIG LIKE and a new subscriber from me! :)
Thanks Jenny! 😊 Welcome to the channel.
Ohh not quite sure - I know they are granivores but also love fruit! 😅
@@Wanderizm Haha! Yes, I can tell they loved the fruit! I will do some online research! :) Thanks!
It's amazing! to see how they are soo tamed!
It bring back memories of when I was a kid, I used to go to Trafalgar Square and feed the pigeons with cups of seed. :)
@@JenniferElliott1 that’s lovely! They are so tamed and friendly. Hope you enjoy the experience 😊👍 you will probably see more greens and blossoms now that spring is just around the corner - perfect timing!
@@Wanderizm are they here even in winter
i was here at the Long Water, recently and it looks as if the Royal parks are discouraging feeding the birds, with signs in this area not to feed them. Shame, because,as well as the Parakeets,if you were patient and still enough, you could hand feed Blue,Great and Coal Tits, and Robins as well.
Is there anybody who sells apples inside the park or you have to buy them outside the park and take them with you?
It's about as secret as London itself...
These birds are really nice to play fun with when I'm, u or other people's alone to be happy?
They are really friendly and lovely!
@@Wanderizm what park is it called?
@@busestransporta-z781 the park is called Kensington Gardens 👍
@@Wanderizm ok
this cool but I wonder how they survive the winter there.
They are a very adaptable species and have bred in cities all over the world.. They mainly survive on fruits and berries in parks and gardens in the winter.
They come from the foothills of the Himalayas so British winters are nothing to them
It rarely gets to below freezing in London
I visit the parakeets here too. Do you use a gimbal?
Hi Zaharah! Yes, was using DJI Pocket 2😊
@@Wanderizm I have that too - but even after more than a year, I have yet to learn how to use it. I carry it all the time though - and sometimes I have the Sony Digital camera as well - but with that I have to edit on Adobe Premier.
@@zwanzo1 awesome! It is a nice compact camera. I used to film using my phone and gimbal but DJi is lighter to carry and has a built-in stabiliser. I am still learning to use it up to now 😅 can’t say that I am a pro at it.
@@Wanderizm true. I do use it. Looking at your videos, I think we do similar trails - Oxford street, parks. I have lots more to edit and this lockdown is the ideal time to do so.
@@zwanzo1 yes, might bump into each other one day! 😅
Since these are considered pests, would the authorities object if you took one home?
Yes. It is illegal to take wild birds in Britain
These are from Australia
I’m surprised they have adapted to the climate
They are from the Himalayan mountains.
You can't give parrot raw potato it's toxic!!
These are Indian Ring Necks…not parakeets.
Indian ring neck parakeets
Many of these tourists are very selfish and just using the animals for their own purposes. Because so many tourists insist on feeding these parakeets a non varied diet of peanuts or apples, ie high fat and high vit C foods, many of them are sick with liver problems. How many tourists can this tiny park take, stamping all over the grass and killing the insect life? Considering the children very often have no respect for wildlife whatsoever, chasing the birds with sticks etc. The tourist has lead to an overpopulation of a non native species which is why hundreds of parakeets are culled by the royal parks every couple of years. The more you feed them, the more the royal parks will be obliged to kill them, which is very stressful for the birds left behind.
