    This video was very helpful. I was really having a rough time, with my door halfway apart, figuring out why I couldn't get my regulator loose through the access holes in the inner door panel. ,Thank you very much for posting it. I had one difficulty, though. On my 2002 B6 A4 Quattro, when I was removing the bolts that held the inner window assembly in the driver's side door, I heard some little clinks in the bottom of the door. I reached in and came out with several flat horseshoe shaped pieces of metal. I didn't know what they were. When I put everything back together and closed my door, I had a gap where the top of the window rail met the roof. I realized, at that point, that these were shims that went in where the main bolts went into the window assembly. Thankfully I didn't have to take everything back apart, just loosen all the bolts enough to slide the shims back in, but it was a trial and error process until I got the right number of shims in each location for everything to be aligned properly. This may be a solution to the problems KetamineFix and Tiger in me (maybe others, I didn't read all of the comments) had with the window glass alignment or needing extra force to close the window. So what I'm saying is, when you're taking the main bolts out, it might be a good idea to reach in the door and remove or catch any shims that may be in there so you can replace them with the correct number of shims at each bolt. Again, Thanks "happywrenching" for a very helpful video.

    I had the pleasure of this job today on a client's vehicle today. got the door panel off no problem then I looked at the window and thought how the hell one the glass out of the door and showing the cable that that run from the door mirror take - very important step and I was doing this job alone. thank you for a very precise & informative video , got the job done without breaking anything:-)

    Great tutorial, thanks! Once you've removed the screws, the inner door plastic simply pulls straight up and comes right off. No need to break any clips. I have a 2000 and my regulator started wearing out about 3-4 years ago. It finally snapped tonight! A shim will have to hold everything until I can fix it.

    Tremendous video. Two additions for those who are using this video as a guide for an 2004 A4 3.0 driver's side window regulator replacement.
    1. There are two screws that need to be taken out when you pop the small panel slightly above the armrest.
    2. There are also two screens that need to be taken out to remove the driver's side mirror.
    In my case, one of the two wires that attaches to the gear on the regulator broke at the gear. I'm ordering a new regulatory assembly and will save $390.

    great video. you saved my butt on this job. just did it on a 06 A4 B7 pretty identical. few things that are worth mentioning you may want to add to tag. when you say "mark the window regulator so that you could put it in the same place" i stared at the assembly unclear by what you meant. i figured the two black rails could pivot to a wide degree which i saw to be the case once i loosened the screws, so i took a pencil and stenciled around them to where they mounted. worked good but....

    This helped a lot. I got halfway in and scratched my head, had my suspicions that the whole upper half of the door would have to come out. This confirmed it. Not sure whether to love it or hate it. It kind of seems like extra work but any other vehicle I’ve replaced one on required a lot of window manipulation and risked scratching it in the process. This design helps prevent that.

    Thanks for the video. Managed to get mine done today. Didn't account for one of the retaining screws on the motor snapping a lug off from the regulator though... don't over tighten guys! Had to remove the wing mirror too and it was a bugger to get back on correctly so anyone looking to do this make sure you can remove with the mirror attached and there is enough slack on the cable. Thanks again!

    Thanks for this video. I replaced the cable kit in mine today.
    Knowing where each bolt or screw is beforehand helped a lot.
    With the cable kit the only tough bit was winding the cables onto the drive pulley & then 'twist it tight & flip it down flat into its housing'.
    I put in soundproofing into the door & a new window switch lock as well.
    This time I remembered to connect the doors inside latch cable too.

    That was just a brilliant guide ... covered everything including differences covering a RH drive car (screws behind cap on drivers door). I just did mine ... but my issue turned out not to be a regulator mechanism issue .... the cheap nasty plastic splined shaft from the motor had sheared right through - all the teeth were good, but superglue didn't fix it. So I stripped the whole shooting match out assuming it was a cable issue or something else - turned out I only needed to take the motor off ... but hey ... I had a morning free and did some exploration into what was in my door ... it still constituted fun ;-) now got to see if I can buy just the plastic splined motor shaft, not a whole frikkin motor ...

    Good video. Thanks. However, you should mention that the window bolts that attach the window to the regulator should not be tightened snug/tight. This will cause binding and drag. The window should have a little play on the regulator blocks. Tighten down then back off 1/4 turn.

    Are you sure there is an override switch to disable the child safety lock? Other then that I can't really think of anything else but to cut out the panel with an angle grinder. I think you will get a lot more help if you post your questions on one of the audi message boards - either audizine or audiforums. Good luck.

    Excellent video! My window suddenly made a grinding noise and ground to a halt fully open.. just in time for a belting thunderstorm. Only problem I found was the Torx bolts holding the regulator mechanism in place in the top section appear to be made of putty, as the one of the heads totally caved. I now have to drill the thing out! And of course, the replacement regulator mechanism doesn't come with replacement bolts...arrgh. So it's off down to the main stealer tomorrow for some spares...

    great video, only thing you never mentioned was window alignment, I followed your vid to the letter, when I secured the window onto the regulator, window was about one 3rd of the way down, when I put the window up it is misaligned (not sitting true with the window frame and not sealing) I am going to get to the point where I can slacken the window securing bolts on the regulator, push window hard up into the correct position an re-tighten, hopefully that will align it, anyhoo, thanks for taking the time to make the vid ;)

    A very astute observation. Even if every person who had an issue with the Audi window regulator looked at this video, it would be a horrible statistic. But realize that only a small faction of a percent is probably looking at this video to try and troubleshoot the problem.
    I currently have the issue for the second time on my 2002 A4 and once before on my 1997 A4.
    Has it been solved? Or are a large percentage of Audi / Volkswagen owners still suffering this issue?

  • @happywrenching
    @happywrenching  12 років тому +1

    It is not always necessary to replace the whole assembly - sometimes the clips break other times its the cable that chews through the plastic piece. We went with the full assembly because it was just less hassle to replace the whole thing rather than mess around with the individual parts.

    one very important thing to make sure of prior to mounting the glass back on the assembly is making sure the cable coming out of the top of the blue center spool section (leading to the top rear pulley towards the rear of the car, once mounted) is on the inside (towards the center of the car) of the cable its crossing over (the cable that goes to the bottom rear pulley).

I have done my driver side and it works (going up/down apart from not being smooth and it's a bit stiff? one thing I had to do is move the (New)cable regulator level down.. as it came new with level up, because to align the glass, did i do something wrong? should i re open and do something? is it best to fit the glass up & screw it while up?..

    • @happywrenching
      @happywrenching  10 років тому

      Hard to say without looking at it but maybe you did not align the two regulator posts correctly? So one side may be pushing that part of the window higher than the other side causing the window to be stiff. Maybe your window motor is starting to go out?

    All I can say is that the door control module is integrated with the window motor assembly, so make sure that all of the electrical connections have been properly plugged in.

      Dunstus Lion they were behind the circles, covered closely by the metal door frame, look closely at the back of the regulator circle holes at the edges to find them; btw you'll need a right angled, low profile ratcheting socket screwdriver (Torx bit) to remove them

    You should show how to put everything back together. That is most difficult part making it all fit back together.

      @Jay Martindale cap, i’m putting my door panel back on and can’t line the clips up for the life of me, really tests my patience especially when i can’t find any vids on it

      @Jay Martindale yea i slid it into the channel, banged it down into place, made sure the speaker bracket lined up with the speaker, then every time i hit the door in a clip would fall, finally got them clipped in and on the last hit, the cord that hooks to the door handle unhooked.. wanted to rip the whole door off after that

    @SundayGladiator The window stopping midway is actually one of the symptoms of a failing regulator. The cable wears out the plastic, causing it to bind. Either way, I think you will have to take out the window assembly.

    Could you not have unscrewed the inner panel instead of lifting the glass out?

    Thanks for the info, I'm sure the B8 owners will find that helpful.
