Hello, i think the boost depends on how many cores are actively being used. the max boost only applies to a single core, as you use more cores the max boost goes down. I could be wrong, but that's how i understood it. Nice video!
Note for those looking for used X1 Gen 7: The WiFI is not upgradeable, so you are stuck with soldered WiFi 5 AC. If you need to upgrade to WiFi 6/6E and do not mind inferior speaker, then better to go for the Gen 6 instead since you can still replace the M.2 WiFi card there to WiFi 6E.
I picked up the 7th Gen ThinkPad X1 Carbon for an insanely good price on Lenovo's website. During their "Doorbuster" sales they had the i7 version with 16gb RAM, 1TB SSD, 1080p matte Privacy Guard screen and IR camera for $1900 CAD (after student discount, before taxes). That was about $1400 USD at the time of buying I think. Oh, and that was with the new i7-10710u 6-core, 15W processor which beats my previous laptop's i7-4710HQ 45W processor by over 60% in Cinebench. That, with the better speakers and new processor, is the only reason I got the 7th Gen over the 6th Gen. I still can't believe I got that deal lol.

I would love to see an audio comparison of the gen 6 and gen 7 FAN at maximum speed - this could nicely be done with TP fan control ;) I am using a Gen 6 and even though its quiet when using Throttlestop, in docking mode with 2 external FHD screens the fan kicks in easily (despite using Throotlestop) - this makes you going crazy. Thinking about an upgrade to Gen 7...

I picked up a 6th Gen X1 Carbon, 16gb / 512gb / QHD Screen, i7 8650 for 800. I love it, freaking awesome, fast and great screen. Traded up from my LG Gram 13, what a difference.
Do you have any detailed impressions about how the keyboards compare in actual usage? I was actually disappointed at the 'on paper' reduction of key travel, but how does that translate to real-world usage experience?
I went through a few lengthy group chats and wrote some emails on it, and it felt almost exactly like my 6th gen. I could feel the difference when pressing an individual key, but once I started typing, not so much. I do type with a pretty light touch, so it's possible the difference is more noticeable if you type more forcefully.
I owned three versions of X1C 7th (4K, 2K and FHD [from Costco]) screen in last 30 days. 4K lasts 3.5 - 4 hours (this is max) under very light load (1 chrome with 3-5 tabs, Outlook client. Nothing else had been running). 2K version lasts only 5 hours. Remember, no gaming, no video editing. Even FD (1080) version which by the way you can test yourself at local Costco, will last 6 - 7 hrs at best scenario. With such poor battery run time, I had to send both units back to Lenovo. The keyboard is best in the league. PS: The performance also is average at best. 4K was very sluggish , I assume due to larger number of pixels it has to deal with, but Dell XPS has no such issues per se. 2K was a bit quicker, but not by much. Now I am using X1 Extreme 2 generation. It offers 500 nits FHD screen. All is good about Extreme, except the battery. At best I may get 5 hrs. With 4K version on X1 Extreme at best you will get 3.5 hrs of battery with real day-to-day usage. Check Lenovo forums to see what real consumers say about the battery life on these machines. It is the fact. If someone claims they get longer battery life it is due to the fact they reduce brightness down 50% which makes the screen very dim and not usable in my books, and they constantly close any unused application.
I repeat. The keyboard on X1 (Carbon and Extreme) is miles ahead comparing to others. Personally I cannot switch to Dell or HP or Asus due to the keyboard.
I agree the battery doesn’t last over 7 hours for the FHD with normal loads. did you face any overheat on the right upper corner of the 7th gen..I have one from costco with FHD screen, but I feel it heats up with normal loads..did you notice this kind of issue?
@@mohammadmubarak6231 Not really. My FHD X1C didn't overheat at all, even with moderate load. I can't say anything else as I returned it back to Costco.
There's definitely some minor stuttering at times moving windows around, which seems to be common on all high DPI screens paired with Intel HD graphics from my experience. It didn't seem any worse than on the 1440p 6th gen to me and never really bothered me.

The coating is definitely some sort of plastic, so I don't think it's particularly scratch resistant, though I'm glad I haven't had to really put mine to the test.
first time buying an x1 carbon and am stuck on which gen to get is the extra bit of money worth it for the gen7 as I have heard that the battery is worse on gen7
I don't think it's worth it unless you use your laptop speakers a lot. That's the only meaningful benefit to the 7th gen. I think the keyboard on the 6th gen is slightly nicer to type on, but that difference isn't as pronounced as the speaker advantage for the 7th gen.

@@sacksdarryl Verdict: FHD should be just fine. Just don't get the glossy HDR unless your sole use is watching video. Mine's a Gen 6. Speakers aren't too great as has been well reported. Also, I find the keyboard quite stiff to use tbh. Might be selling this and looking at a Dell Latitude
A product sheet for the X1C8 popped up on the Lenovo website (news.lenovo.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/LENOVO-ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-Gen8-R4.pdf). Looks like the main difference is the new 6-core processor over the current 4-core. Not a massive upgrade IMO given thermal limitations of the X1, but if you have a core-dependent workload (like running development VMs) then it might be worth it. As a caveat, this is the time of year they usually launch models, so if you can hold out a bit longer it might be worth waiting to see if the early product sheet was missing anything.

Two additional questions: 1) Have you heard anything about the release date? 2) Given that 80% of my time on the X1 will be classic productivity/multitasking and only 20% photo/video editing, do think the slightly higher price of the Gen8 will be worth it relative to the Gen7? it would be a near perfect laptop if it wasn’t for the shameful battery/ motherboard defect that causes the laptop to go into sleep/hibernation mode every few minutes. it’s an hardware bug and there should be a “recall”. but there isn’t, and nobody talks about it. not even the so called “objective” tech reviewers. my x1 carbon 7 gen came with this defect right out of the box! you can read about this problem in this thread: forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Carbon-Gen-7-regularly-mistakes-empty-battery-and-shuts-down/m-p/4561156

No touchscreen on the normal X1 Carbon, but Lenovo sells an X1 Yoga that is nearly identical to the X1 Carbon, but with a touchscreen that folds all the way around into tablet mode. Both of these are 2.5lbs, while the X1 Yoga is a bit heavier at 3lbs.

Unfortunately yes. The 7th gen hides them a bit better on the outside, but they're both worse than pretty much every other laptop I've used in this regard. The soft touch finish is very pleasant to use.

@Yash Gaur Antiglare is Matt screen. However, they only available in IPS FHD. The 4k is Glare and 400 nits.

Yeah either of these would be great for students. The 1080p models will get even better battery life and I think they look pretty good as well.

7th gen have speakers on top and bottom. You missed this big time.
It's got subwoofer and hence a smaller battery of 51 WHr compared to Gen 6 at 57 WHr. But T480 had great audio unlike the X1C 6 and T480s.
