- We set out to race Round 1 of the Florida Gold Cup Series at Gatorback Cycle Park in Gainesville, FL on a 1994 CR500 in the +25 class. Ian bought the bike 2 weeks before hand off of craigslist, and got to ride the bike a total of 10 minutes before the big day. This is how the racing unfolded.

Just don't get on the throttle so hard. Not that big of a deal... Have tamed many of them. ANY experienced rider can.

Had a go on a cr500 30yrs ago, went everywhere in second gear and then gave it back, I was faster on a 125, respect to you!!
I've out ran 250s on 85s the smaller bikes will be faster bc you can throw em around it takes skill to toss around the bigger bikes

As a young teen I pestered and pestered my old man to ride his YZ490, eventually he gave in. Didn't crash but only rode it once. Respect to those who can ride these fast. Their totally nuts.
With all respect the 450f don't have the juice these do and they're a fair bit harder to ride. The four stroke is more like riding an armchair vs being strapped to dynamite.

koolerryan My comment wasn't intended to offend. It's pure physics. My point purely states the 450's have a power curve that makes them easier to ride/race. Put all those 4S riders on a 2S and see if they can ride with the same pace? Consider you jump on a 2S 500 and go flat out, I'm confident you find it a lot more difficult to ride than your KTM. Not faster, harder.
The 450's have technical advantages now that their pwr/weight is close. It's not a bad thing. So with that in mind I believe 2 strokes req far more attention to pwr control skill than a 4s to achieve the same result. Hence the armchair comment was meant in humor. Of course they're fast.
As for the 450's being ahead at first refer to point one.

No fuck everyone that doesn't agree with him. He's right 2 strokes require way more strength than the four strokes. They create so much more response and power it's unbelievable. One moment your cruising and the next your wheeling in powerband. In general 4 strokes are much easier to ride hands down!
John Biddle You're missing the point, I'm not saying a 2S is better, I'm only saying that they can be more difficult to ride fast. It has nothing to do with fanboy. Both 2S and 4S have their own advantages.
Find a 2S 500 and try it for yourself.
P.S Dude, you need anger management........... try riding a 2S 500, it will humble you.

Nice vid! The 500cc reminds me of when I was a kid. We always go to the track back in the early 90's with whole the family. Was a great time.
Love those 2 strokes Wish they would of out more of The technology into two strokes and modernize them instead of take them off the market and discontinue making them nice video
Most of the reason is emissions. Maybe the answer is an lubricating oil that's not harmful. Two strokes would be in again. Saying that, the 4 strokes in a way are already achieving the same.
Mark Lowe 2 strokes will come back. Direct injection in modern day 2 strokes in boat engines is more efficient and pollutes less.

Hear the way it's idling? A little high, a little unstable? That tells me the crank seals are leaking. Leaky seals lead to a fried piston. They're easy to change, just spike or drill a hole in the metal face of the seal and thread in sheet metal screw, then use pliers to pop it out. Be careful not to damage the shaft or the hole. Put a little grease on the running surface of the new seal and gently tap it into place.

My 500 does that too,but engine has no seal issues.jetted a touch lean on idle jet or it loads up at the line.
@@MrCR500AF lean at idle. Proper diagnosis. Could be several things. Sounds like mr peter had bad crank seals at one time. Ive never owned a CR500 but chances are ive wrenched on a few in the past. Sure wish id have saved about 20 of these as new. I could probably have retired by now!
Cr500 is the only bike where the back fender looks like it's gonna fall off just from the bike idling
That 2 stroke sound.........It is the way a dirtbike should be. I have hated 4 strokes ever since the first YZF came out.
I had the pleasure of riding a CR500 set up for desert racing, it was an absolute beast! Any gear would pull up the front tire. Never been so scared and pumped up at the same time in my life.

And people used to say one of the reasons mx switched to 4 strokes was because 2 strokes were way too loud compared to a 4stroke. not true!

Very nice to watch and to see Timmy Ferry in this made it even cooler. I golfed with Timmy at the "Road To Recovery" tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada back when 4-Stroke motocross was not the norm.
I've always thought if the 500's would of kept on been produced with the technology today advancing so quickly in motor sports what a 500 on track would be like with all the launch control & gadgets the 450 4strokes have today, it's undeniable they would be unstoppable bikes if they had been produced & updated through out the years, lovely bikes & a engine class that has its own legacy in the industry.

+Ryden Swalwell the steelies will still blow 450's out of the water. unless you ride a 10k worked factory 450 then its not putting out more than 55hp while 500's do 65hp

I've had a 89 and a 93 model CR 500. Loved those bikes. Depending on the distance of the start I did 3rd gear starts. Didn't rev the motor too much, like on a 250 or 125, let out the clutch as needed and rolled on the power to cut down on wheel spin. Pulled many hole shots. As another guy stated, don't tap out the rpm's for the power like on a 250/125. Go one gear higher and let the torque work. I would love to have another one just to play on now.

Nice ride bro! I liked the Performance Engineering ad in the beginning of the video as I was a machinist there from 2001-2008. I enjoyed making all their billet parts during the week and going out to Bithlo, Pax Trax, Waldo and Reddick to ride/race on the weekends! Some of the most awesome times of my life!! Always loved the idle of those big bore 2 strokes. They vibrated horribly, I had a buddy that had one that was a beast but sheesh I couldn't stand riding it due to the vibration you got through the handlebars.

Great video guys! I ride a 91 Cr250. It sounds like the bike needed alittle tuning, and with it would no doubt be holeshotting by a mile.. All the soft suspended front end high flying was hilarious, awesome to see a big ol' bike out ripping with the pros to see how it stacks up. Watching Tim look back especially after talking about the holeshot was priceless... good show.

I've raced more than 9 years in Belgium only riding 500 'cc two stroke strating in 86... first year on a Husky 430 CR, then KX 500 for two seasons to be convinced that my four CR500R where really the best joyful motors ever... Oh boy, I really miss those days. Anyway, thank you guys for the revival.
