You got that right Hitler. Look back at the old 500cc outdoor class. The top guys where thick in muscle. Not like racers of today whom look like ripped Woman.
I've had a 89 and a 93 model CR 500. Loved those bikes. Depending on the distance of the start I did 3rd gear starts. Didn't rev the motor too much, like on a 250 or 125, let out the clutch as needed and rolled on the power to cut down on wheel spin. Pulled many hole shots. As another guy stated, don't tap out the rpm's for the power like on a 250/125. Go one gear higher and let the torque work. I would love to have another one just to play on now.
Hear the way it's idling? A little high, a little unstable? That tells me the crank seals are leaking. Leaky seals lead to a fried piston. They're easy to change, just spike or drill a hole in the metal face of the seal and thread in sheet metal screw, then use pliers to pop it out. Be careful not to damage the shaft or the hole. Put a little grease on the running surface of the new seal and gently tap it into place.
@@MrCR500AF lean at idle. Proper diagnosis. Could be several things. Sounds like mr peter had bad crank seals at one time. Ive never owned a CR500 but chances are ive wrenched on a few in the past. Sure wish id have saved about 20 of these as new. I could probably have retired by now!
great video, id have to say for a fella who buys a bike off the internet wires the grips, tops up the fuel, and is ready for a race kicks a whole lotta ass!!!! im gonna nickname that bike "loose cannon", a couple more hours on that bike and I honestly believe you will take out the KX dude easy peasy,
awesome!!! Beside it being a five hundred and old, the best part is this kid had fun, no matter what the outcome. Good for you, young man. It has been along time since I rode and this vid recaptured some of the glory days, thanks.
Love those 2 strokes Wish they would of out more of The technology into two strokes and modernize them instead of take them off the market and discontinue making them nice video
Most of the reason is emissions. Maybe the answer is an lubricating oil that's not harmful. Two strokes would be in again. Saying that, the 4 strokes in a way are already achieving the same.
As a young teen I pestered and pestered my old man to ride his YZ490, eventually he gave in. Didn't crash but only rode it once. Respect to those who can ride these fast. Their totally nuts. With all respect the 450f don't have the juice these do and they're a fair bit harder to ride. The four stroke is more like riding an armchair vs being strapped to dynamite.
koolerryan My comment wasn't intended to offend. It's pure physics. My point purely states the 450's have a power curve that makes them easier to ride/race. Put all those 4S riders on a 2S and see if they can ride with the same pace? Consider you jump on a 2S 500 and go flat out, I'm confident you find it a lot more difficult to ride than your KTM. Not faster, harder. The 450's have technical advantages now that their pwr/weight is close. It's not a bad thing. So with that in mind I believe 2 strokes req far more attention to pwr control skill than a 4s to achieve the same result. Hence the armchair comment was meant in humor. Of course they're fast. As for the 450's being ahead at first refer to point one.
No fuck everyone that doesn't agree with him. He's right 2 strokes require way more strength than the four strokes. They create so much more response and power it's unbelievable. One moment your cruising and the next your wheeling in powerband. In general 4 strokes are much easier to ride hands down!
John Biddle You're missing the point, I'm not saying a 2S is better, I'm only saying that they can be more difficult to ride fast. It has nothing to do with fanboy. Both 2S and 4S have their own advantages. Find a 2S 500 and try it for yourself. P.S Dude, you need anger management........... try riding a 2S 500, it will humble you.
Nice ride bro! I liked the Performance Engineering ad in the beginning of the video as I was a machinist there from 2001-2008. I enjoyed making all their billet parts during the week and going out to Bithlo, Pax Trax, Waldo and Reddick to ride/race on the weekends! Some of the most awesome times of my life!! Keep it "BRRAAAAPING"!!!!!!
Great video guys! I ride a 91 Cr250. It sounds like the bike needed alittle tuning, and with it would no doubt be holeshotting by a mile.. Watching Tim look back especially after talking about the holeshot was priceless... good show.

Nothing like riding a 2 stroke 500. I had a KX500 and every time I took it out to the desert there was always someone wanting to race. They were either young kids on 125's or 250's or drunk dudes on there quads. Nice vid...
I love the CR 500, you are my hero riding with this bike. If you had a modern CR 500 AF you'd be unbeatable, you are a very fast rider. Sorry for my english, Ale from Italy
Thanks for posting! It was good to see a 500 back on the track. But coming from someone that raced 500's for years, your riding it like a 250. Shift up and use the meaty part of the mid range. Thanks where they pull the hardest, 500's are fairly flat on top. Again, thanks for posting.
that helmet cam showed just how brutal some of those big hits were. Great vid I was very surprised to see you hangin with red dog as long as u did. Not gonna lie thought when he looked back at you it was gonna be the last we saw of him! Great vid now gonna watch some more keep it up!
Its nice to finally see someone really ride a CR500, instead of video after video of people just starting their bike and taking off. If your that fast on a CR500, you NEED to race a CR500AF!
That suspension looks so soft man! I can't believe you did as well as you did. Looks like the bike really wore you out towards the end of the races. Nice job!
I owned a 1992 cr500 and let me tell you. All out speed no 4 stroke can hang with it but in the trails you are at a disadvantage trying to maneuver such a big bike. They do vibrate like crazy.
Always loved the idle of those big bore 2 strokes. They vibrated horribly, I had a buddy that had one that was a beast but sheesh I couldn't stand riding it due to the vibration you got through the handlebars.
He has balls of steel, the cr 500 two stroke you pick a prudent direction and hope it agrees.
Just don't get on the throttle so hard. Not that big of a deal... Have tamed many of them. ANY experienced rider can.
Best comment ever... And most accurate haha
Amazing that a nearly 20 year old bike can keep up with the state-of-the-art machines.
mate if it had modern chassis and suspension etc it wouls leave those bikes for dead wit that near on 70hp in the hood
But no modern bike will ever have close to 70hp ever.
true
Trial Tuners they have 65hp so that’s really close lmao😂😂

Had a go on a cr500 30yrs ago, went everywhere in second gear and then gave it back, I was faster on a 125, respect to you!!
I've out ran 250s on 85s the smaller bikes will be faster bc you can throw em around it takes skill to toss around the bigger bikes

is a cr500 a good beginner bike?

yes, I started kx 500 and now i have maico 700 (2-stroke)

Yes, that was Red Dog from SX/MX. He is probably one of coolest guys you can meet, and you can often catch him riding locally around here.

Not crank seals in this case, power was to sufficient

Anybody else not able to hear the cr a lot? Sounds like a bunch of farts covering it up.
And people used to say one of the reasons mx switched to 4 strokes was because 2 strokes were way too loud compared to a 4stroke. not true!
+charles bowers 2 strokes are just higher pitched, not louder
+REAPER2850 yea I know. that's why I said it's not true.
+charles bowers i was just backing you up
+REAPER2850 the deeper sound of a 4 stroke carries a lot further than a 2 stroke.
