Great story, Kristine. I am a 70 year old male and got "the call" to donate 24 years ago. My recipient was a 23 year old male in Spain. (I am in the US) Like you I donated surgically and also like you I had very little pain and had a quick recovery. At that time, there were about 4 million people in the registry and I was this person's only match. I was overwhelmed by this. It occupied my mind night and day for months. Unfortunately I never got to communicate with this person because Spain does not permit contact ever. I will go to my grave wondering who he was. On the positive side I am eternally grateful that I got this call and that I met the health requirements to proceed. I consider this the highest honor of my life. Oh yeah, one more thing. Ten years ago I donated my left kidney to a stranger. I am living proof you only need one.
I am so honored to this day that I was able to cover the very touching meeting of the donor and the recipient 9 years ago. This is the kind of story that we need every day to give us most needed hope that most of us have lost given the challenges we always face. I am forever grateful to have met and interviewed you Ate Kristine and Mylina. Hope to see you both again sometime somewhere. Parang kanta ba?
