    This is how I've been varnishing my paintings for ages. I use a cake slice like Julie does except on the smaller pieces where I spread it about with a flat silicon beauty blender. I wait until I have 3-4-5 paintings to varnish and use a fair amount of varnish on the first and the excess that pours off go onto the next piece to be varnished and so on until they are all done. Saves a lot of product from being wasted. I detest seeing anything getting wasted lol it's like money down the drain.

      Tomeccho great idea re catching the drips. Hate waste as well, especially with paint products. Suspect that it may be a toxic process to make.

      I so relate! I've always got a blank canvas under a pour to colour any paint. One of my best paintings came from 'the drippings'! If it doesn't work, it can serve as a base paint.

      @@evokevisualart9128 ha! two of my favourites are 'unofficial paintings'. One of a smoosh (a 'dip') into runoff paint thats all red and gold with hints of pink and green, reminds me of a summer garden, and the other was a blank canvas I tilted paint onto, lots of white and many shades of blue with a bit of purple and red and that looks like a big old ship with sails and all on a rough sea.

    I left too much varnish on a painting one time, I wanted to finish it as a gift, and it cracked everywhere, it was surface cracks, not necessarily in the paint. Take the stickiness of the pouring medium and increase it about five times and you have resin. Lol. And it gets everywhere, no matter how careful you are. I'll use it when I have a bunch of small items like coasters, but I'll stick with my varnish for my paintings. Your bloom and varnish job is gorgeous! Love the shininess!

    I’m in varnishing hell at the moment trying to use Crystalac Brite Tone with a soft brush & also foam pad still getting brush strokes after 6 thin coats on my canvases. The ceramic coasters are not as bad.
    I am surprised you are using something similar to Liquitex PM as the “varnish” instead of actual varnish! I think I’ll try it on one of my small pieces!

  • @Hedgehogsinthemist123
    @Hedgehogsinthemist123 3 роки тому +2

    Pouring medium is designed to go on thickly, it will naturally drip off to find its level and it really shouldn't crack, but you need to make sure your table is level. I use Liquitex high gloss varnish. I pour a lot on, move it around with a very soft synthetic wide brush so all areas are covered, then brush quickly, but lightly going one way, brushing the excess varnish off, and then brushing the other way, brush the sides and catch any drips and that's it. Use torch to burst any bubbles then leave overnight. Repeat another 2-3 times depending how glossy you want it. It comes up like glass. It's so much easier and quicker to use than pouring medium. If you use painters tape underneath then any drips will just be removed when you remove the tape at the end.

    Would you recommend spray varnish for paintings made with the dutch pour technique?

    Thank you for this, Julie!
    Why do you prefer Pouring Medium over Gloss Varnish in this application?

    I’m so enjoying your videos! Do you still ‘varnish’ the same way? I haven’t poured paint yet, trying to learn from another Aussie first. (I’m on Central Coast NSW) ❤️🇦🇺

    Wow that’s gorgeous! Does the pouring medium offer same kind of protection as a varnish would?

    Hi Julie, this was so helpful, thank you. I don’t know where you live but I’m in the northern hemisphere in winter, with indoor temperatures of between 13-17C so my paintings can take 3 days min to dry. How long would I need between coats of varnish under these conditions? I don’t want to leave a testing fingerprint ! Thanks Caroline

    Does the pouring medium protect it from UV rays and does it yellow? Would it be worth it to do this and then use a protective varnish for the third coat?
