Hi I'm 77 years old and my grandson is helping me write this. I must say looking at all these clips take me back to a very long time ago when I was a young man and we had to pay to watch television. Looking at this takes me back to I believe 1967 when this great actor was this very well done/performed character and I remember watching Power of the Daleks ever so clearly when it's one and only broadcast was. I'd like to thank you Mr. Humphryes for this video because you've just reminded me of what was a very fun three years with a certain Cosmic Hobo and in my book he is the best Doctor Who ever. I stopped watching after january 1989 and ever so ironically the show ended not even a year later. I made that decision because I knew that nothing after that story would be good
It just goes to demonstrate that one is never too old to make errors of judgement! Deciding, at the age of 50, to forego the stories of Season 26 was robbing yourself of some of the best episodes of 80's Who. 'Curse of Fenric', 'Ghostlight' and 'Survival' were a good deal better than anything you'd have watched in the preceding 5 seasons. But at least you are now afforded the benefits of DVDs and digital streaming to undo any rash decisions of youth.
BabelColour Thank you for replying. Back to my original point which I admit I did avoid after a very short time I thank you for making this video and I must say it's a shame a fan such as yourself didn't get to see many Troughton stories in their entirety. You would've loved them. Thank you BabelColour for making this thank you.
Jamie : "Have you thought up some clever plan, Doctor?" The Doctor : "Yes, Jamie, I believe I have." Jamie : "What are you going to do?" The Doctor : "Bung a rock at it."
A wonderful tribute to the man who kept Doctor Who alive, he had the whole weight of the show on his shoulders when he took over from Hartnell, if the viewers didn't accept him as the new Doctor, no Doctor Who, but they did, and we thank him for it. Patrick Troughton the man who kept the show alive! :D
Patrick Troughton took this role and ran with it, literally! :) A great doctor who really established the pattern for the rest, apparently he's Matt Smiths favorite, after he caught up on the history of the show after getting the role.
When asked who's interpretation of the Doctor he liked best, Matt Smith said "Patrick Troughton". Have to agree with him there: definitely my favourite! Thanks for such a great compilation!
My favourite doctor if I rate the doctors it would be like this 1.2nd 2. Every other doctor I love every doctor to be honest but I have a soft spot for the 2nd doctor
Doctor Who Productions he’s a pretty pure example of the doctors adventurous sunny and explorer like spirit as well as his humour, what else do you like about him ? :o
Patrick Troughton was brilliant. 1) His iconic companions were Jamie Mc Crimmon, Sergeant Benton and Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart 2) His monsters as well as the Daleks and the Cybermen included the Great Intelligence, the Robot Yeti and the Ice Warriors and they made Doctor Who history 3)The sonic screwdriver and the Time Lords were introduced 4)His speech with Victoria in The Tomb of the Cybermen was beautiful and wonderful 5)He brought on the humour and bumbling of the Doctor and 6) Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester Mc Coy were inspired by him which brought us their Doctors.
I don't want to sound disagreeable, but I can always see Hartnell in Baker, Colin and Sylvester. In fact I think that Hartnell and Troughton were complementary personalities. One was a explorer, a real scientist, a man of the brain, a mysterious man; the other was a adventurer, more colourful, never dark and in fact more human. All of those qualities are complementary and they together create the image of the doctor.
The last line is perfect foreshadowing, "Maybe Tomorrow, I'll find what I'll call home, until then you know I free to roam......." Always brings the Brigadier to mind.......
I love the 2nd Doctor just because of the things that make him so unacceptable to a modern audience...he doesn't have any super powers, jet pack or mega death ray gun, he's just a silly, but clever little man traveling around the universe aimlessly
Matt Smith and the 11th were my introduction to Doctor Who, watching this, I can really see where he got his cues. Troughton's 2nd and Hartnell's 1st are fast becoming two of my other favorite Doctors (you can't forger your first so Matt gets an honorary spot there XD). And hey, who can't love a guy who can wear the hell out of a bow tie? Cheers to the man whose Doctor became the base template for so many to come, almost even moreso than the one who preceded him.
there's one thing that always makes me smile: the way the docor- every doctor- just *pops* into screen. you've got to be seriously deranged to not love that, it's just so CUTE.
One of my favorite doctors and what a fitting song for him, so cheerful! I just love Patrick Troughton! He showed what a regeneration can really do to this show and his humour is just verbally and physically great and I hope they release more of his missing stories because of a great Doctor he was!
+Robert Green It really is a fitting song. One of my favorite parts is when the photographer is taking pics of him in the midst of the people running in panic, and he poses for her. I've only seen 4 of Troughton's stories (not counting "The Three Doctors"), and have loved each of them (adding a few to my personal collection). I discussed what I liked most about him with a Whovian co-worker. He had an absolutely infectious charm that radiated throughout his performances, which we agreed on. Yet as an actor, he had the range to apply pathos, seriousness, and even sinister nature ("The Enemy of the World") when he needed to. Jamie, Zoe, and Victoria were a perfect tandem for him as well, companion-wise.
Sean Polite It's really great to find another whovian to talk to! I would like to have a Whovian co-worker as well. You're a lucky fellow! And that scene with the photograph is one of my favorites too! Your comment brought other great points of view on Troughton's performance and I agree with all of them. After seeing Hartnell's brilliant era end (although sad, because of his condition), it was refreshing seeing this "Cosmic Hobo" who made the regeneration formula work (for 50+ years!). I enjoyed most of his stories, whether it is the "Tomb of the Cybermen" (where he outsmarts the mastermind and the Cybermen puzzles at the same time) or the "Enemy of the World" (where he plays as two people in the same episode, not the mention that the story itself is material really worth watching because of the twists and the simplicity in everything) or the "Web of Fear" (where the Doctor can still steal the scenes, especially the final ones, even with the presence of the Great Intelligence, the frightning Yetis, Victoria's legs and the big guest cast!) or the "Mind Robber" (where he faces the powers of writing!) or "The War Games" (where he shows he cares about his companions and has to face judgement day while keeping a mix of comedy and drama at the same time) or any other episode. His way of portraying the Doctor was unique, even if he served as an example to other unique Doctors like David Tennant, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi as well. His Doctor was trying to cope with regeneration while at the same time learning how to manage the TARDIS and facing new and old dangers in new ways. Even though Hartnell started the fool act since the very beginning, it's an atribute mostly given credit to Troughton because he was over the top brilliant at it and it's a big part of his era, not to mention he was as iconic as the other Doctors. I feel I could rewatch and rewatch Troughton's run because of the black-and-white magic he brought to the show and I'm glad he did. By the way, I loved "The Three Doctors" and I think you will love it as well. I really recommend it. It's a must watch classic filled with Omega (who I want to see reappear again in New Who), a big fan service with three Doctors that were absolutely fantastic at their roles, especially when they are together and talking to each other or to the guest cast, and an intriguing story that leaves an almost impossible cliffhanger hanging for many years.
+Robert Green Thanks so much for the kind words and your great insight! I have finally viewed "The Three Doctors", and it was an absolute stitch. Pertwee was another favorite of mine, and their interaction was a gem, including how Jo and the Brigadier were caught in their exchanges. William Hartnell for his ailing health played perfectly as a mediator for their antics, and kept the ancestral spirit of Classic Who in his moments. Omega was an amazing presence, and I would like to see him return. "The War Games" was a bonifade classic, and well worth the price I invested in my all-region DVD player. I really hope that one day "The Highlanders" even by way of animation replacements for the lost episodes makes its way to DVD (outside of the portion in the "Lost In Time" boxset). Frazier Hines from the instant I saw him became one of my all-time favorite companions in the irreplacable Jamie McCrimmon. Funny story --- I met up with a friend of mine at a local comic shop, and reserved the last copy of a book for him. As a show of thanks, he gave me carte blanche on any I wanted. I picked up the 1986 DOctor Who Magazine Summer Special with the catchy tagline of "The Historical Stories Reviewed." When I got home, I was delight to see at the bottom "EXCLUSIVE! Photos from the missing HIGHLANDERS". So thanks to the late Hugh David's photos and recollection, I have an idea of what a great story it was. Also, if you could recommend any more Troughton stories or Classic Who stories, I would greatly welcome it :) I have "The Web of Fear" as well, and it's amazing how Troughton's performance has been echoed so much in the nuances of later actors (and even his 3-year/short term rule with Peter Davison and some of the other actors later on). Thanks again!
It's truly sad that so many of the episodes from Mr. Troughton's run are missing. Though as some of them have been recovered, maybe there is hope that one day we will see them all restored. (Also, anyone else think Zoe is one of the best companions ever? As well as having the most...distracting...wardrobe?)
I know it's been years since this was uploaded, but I lust finished The War Games, and no joke, it was kinda sad seeing everything end, especially since the 2nd Doctor's era of the show is one of my favourites. This video reminds me of how great it was, and it it brings me so much joy. Thank you for making this wonderful tribute.
The fourth will always be 'my Doctor' and I love all the modern era Doctors. But over the years #2 has slowly become my favorite Doctor. He's not just a clown or a hobo; go back and take a close look at his performances, esp. in 'Enemy of the World.' His acting is just profound.
The acting in the original series was all around better than the acting in New Who. The 2005 version relies on special effects and a lot of frantic shouting. Capaldi is a breath of fresh air compared to Smith.
When I was a child we lived in the village of Lacock in Wiltshire. One day my dad was driving home and was confronted by a roundhead soldier on a horse. It was Patrick Troughton and he was filming in Moonraker (not the Bond movie) alongside George Baker and they used the village and Lacock Abbey as the sets. My earliest memories of him on TV was of him playing Gideon in Precious Bane.
It's a shame that so little still exists. If there was any era I wish were complete, it'd be his. I immediately took to him (and lovely Jamie!). You can't help but smile at his comedic physicality and warmth. And you could tell that the camaraderie was there in real-life. I never get tired of that epic side-to-side jumping run. The War Games, my favorite classic story, is one of the show's most emotional dramatic pieces, even by today's standards (I love 10 and 11 for the same reason).
I like it how you've made the coloured scene black and white to fit them in better with the older footage. Excellent and very fitting song for Troughton's Doctor. Thank you very much for another excellent video!
Happy 101th anniversary sir. William Hartnell may played the Doctor first, but it wasn't until your incarnation that the Doctor was THE Doctor as we know and love him today.
This song sums up the Second Doctor perfectly. It could have been written with him in mind! Brilliant choice. I love "Maybe tomorrow I'll want to settle down" as it seems to foreshadow the Third Doctor era.
I think I may have seen this before watching any of his episodes and my first impression from this video was that he was irritable and mean. I'm really glad I actually watched his episodes because he is so, so much more than the few clips of this video! I began with NuWho as well, but the 2nd Doctor is definitely my favorite and I am proud of it!!
This is just about the best song for him. Also, I found it hilarious that when the lyrics say "Every step I take, I make a new friend," and the clip was from the mind Robber where the creepy kid holds the sword to his throat. 😂
This is my favourite of all your tributes! I'm watching all the classic Doctor Whos right from the begining and I absolutely can't wait to see the Troughton ones I think he's going to be one of my favs
I've really enjoyed all of your tributes to The Doctor's I've loved all of your song choices; in particular the Sixth and Seventh Doctor's! But without a doubt this is my favourite tribute, the song is BRILLIANT whilst the video really captures the essence of Troughton's performance, it makes me smile and even brings a slight tear to my eye, really a job well done!!
I see so much of two in Matt! Considering Matt adored Patrick's portrayal of Who, his characteristics are very much like two's were! Love Patrick Troughton, one of my biggest heroes! RIP you will never be forgotten Pat!! Brilliant video yet again Babelcolour I applaud you massively ;)
I love Troughton, he was goofy, giddy and grumpy, but he was also a very hurt and serious Doctor when he had to be. The speech in "Tomb of the Cybermen" is a perfect example.
Pat Troughton, is quite simply my favourite Doctor. He's quirky, riddiculous, mad, funny and unpredictable. You can see how Matt Smith has channeled some of Pat Troughton, also his fave Doctor through into his role of the 11th Doctor, a homage of sorts. Its a shame that pretty much all of Pat Troughtons tenure is missing now, bar a few adventures. I sure hope after The Reign of Terror, that the 2nd Doctor Era is one again reborn into the 21st century through animation.
A great tribute. Regretfully, I was very young when he took over the role. I had watched "W.H." from the 1st episode. I had no idea at the time, that he was suffering from ill-health. Nobody, outside of the "B.B.C.", knew anything about re-generation. So, I`m afraid, I was not very receptive for several stories, though, I still never missed an episode. Then, I came to enjoy his portrayal & as we all know, it happened again. I was much better, with re-generation from then on. I`m sure, he would be very proud. He & Jon Pertwee, did a great job promoting the programme, even after they left the role.
Filby My only favourite is "W.H." because he was my first "Dr.". I have enjoyed the portrayals, of all the other actors, some to a greater degree than other`s. But, I always try to find something I like, about any new "Dr." or "Companion", then build from there hopefully. Forward with the "12th" !! :)
I wish a lot of his episodes were fully recovered but regardless the legacy of the 2nd Doctor is immortalized by tributes like this. This song is so fitting as well. Simply wonderful!
This is for "conor clyde". How can you say nobody likes Tom Baker? I personally enjoy something about everyone who has played the role. Actually Tom Baker was voted #1 in his portrayal of Doctor Who by the fans of Doctor Who magazine just last year. That was by people who know and have seen every actor who has played the role. Wonderful video saluting Patrick Trough ton and his Doctor. Looking forward to catching some of his episodes.
All I have to say that it is a travesty that fans only have six complete stories of the second doctor to enjoy. That is eleven less than the Hartnell era. I just want to cry thinking about that fact because Troughton is absolutely brilliant. So Chaplin-esque. A great actor, brilliant face with so much character, and such a bubbly personality. A great loss to television history, but at least we have such great stories like Tomb of the Cybermen and the Mind Robber.
I am sad that so many of the second doctor's stories were lost. I'm 28 and came into Doctor Who via the NuWho, and when I saw ‘Tomb of the Cybermen’ on NetFlix Troughton instantly became by favorite doctor. I try to see what I can of him and cherish every one of them.
I think this is really beautiful. Pat Troughton was a marvelous Doctor, so perfectly into the character, all the time. The song is wonderful, but it made me sad in a way.
such a brave actor... he really definded the character of " The Doctor ", funny, quirky... and always taking sirous threats with a smile... but when the situation becomes more futile this sweet little comedian changes into the timelord victorious... William Hartnell may have been the first actor to play him, it was troughton who first played The Doctor. May he have a after-life in peace in the DW heaven.
Lovely. Much as I adore Neil Innes and The Kinks, this is the best song you've used for a tribute. Poignant - it makes me want to watch a Troughton story now!
I think its save to say out of all the Doctors Patricks is the most likeable, he just has that charm that when you see him you think "He's the Doctor!". Its a shame he passed away, I could have imagined him coming back for the 50th (he was, out of all the people who have played him the one who enjoyed the role the most (returning 3 times))
One of my faviorite Doctors. He did a great job makiing sure fans would carry on loving the show. 57 years later I am still loving it. (And I do love Jodie no matter how much people slag her off.
Would just like to say Thank you @babelcolour for making this. Doctor Who itself got me through a difficult point in my life, and then I began to find tributes and I recently found this fantastic one and just the song alone really speaks so many volumes to me. From the bottom of my heart I say Thank you
Ah, Troughton, it's impossible to dislike his Doctor.

Jesus Christ, this is an old one. THe Revival was only on for a year! A wonderful little tribute.
It makes me cry and smile every time. Just plain amazing! Patrick Troughton will live on in all of our memories until the end of time itself.
Classic Who was terrific. New Who is garbage.
My favourite doctor
It is scary how these tribute videos are 10 years old now, I remember watching them when they were uploaded love your channel btw
It terrifies me too! Ten years in a blink of an eye :)
BabelColour By any chance will you get the chance to do 12?

Josh Rush whats ironic is the 1st doctors last episode is missing, exept for the 1st regeneration scene
Veikko Elo She was really very good in "Enemy of the World".
Josh Rush Not as good as she was in Evil of the Daleks, Web of Fear or Fury From the Deep, though.

That's really cool. I wish that I could have met him. He was a brilliant character actor. I really admire his talent.
This is like my hundredth time watching this
I love it when he throws his arms up and runs. I lol at it every time!
" You`ve had this place redecorated, haven`t you? I don`t like it....."
He`s so cute!
"maybe tomorrow ill want to settle down"
always reminds me of his exile to earth :)
I just watched the War Games, he was great in that. The ending left me all choked up.
The Mighty Trout!
Just finished watching all of Troughton’s era! I can now fully appreciate why he’s many people’s favourite Doctor! Farewell, Cosmic Hobo!
0:37 this is where 12 got his habit of running like a penguin with its arse on fire from
who is watching 2017, i am, i love this tribute to my fav doctor
Me too
Happy 101th anniversary sir. William Hartnell may played the Doctor first, but it wasn't until your incarnation that the Doctor was THE Doctor as we know and love him today.
The first episode I saw of Doctor Who was The Enemy of the World part 1 back in 2003, and I've been hooked ever since!
This song sums up the Second Doctor perfectly. It could have been written with him in mind! Brilliant choice. I love "Maybe tomorrow I'll want to settle down" as it seems to foreshadow the Third Doctor era.
He's still the greatest - he got it perfectly right and innovated the eccentricity
Troughton first, Tom Baker 2nd, Tennant third in my eyes.
Awww, now I remember why this little hobo is one of my favorites ;}
The expressions are amazing. I love this Doctor.
Happy birthday to Patrick Troughton.
LEGENDARY! Both you sir and the respectable Patrick Troughton! An amazing tribute and everytime i watch it, i can not help but smile! Thank you xxx
love how he puts his hands up when he runs, or is scared
Seriously, this is the perfect video. The song is more then perfect. Troughton's performance is what kept the Doctor alive
+BabelColour Can you please have a video where he says Oh My Giddy Aunt at least twice....
Patrick will all ways be my doctor but matt smith will all ways have a place in my heart
This is just about the best song for him. Also, I found it hilarious that when the lyrics say "Every step I take, I make a new friend," and the clip was from the mind Robber where the creepy kid holds the sword to his throat. 😂
This fits even more so with the Doctor, with the whole gonna look for Gallifrey thing going on now.
My all time favorite incarnation of The Doctor... and the best tribute for Patrick Troughton!!
This is my favourite of all your tributes! I'm watching all the classic Doctor Whos right from the begining and I absolutely can't wait to see the Troughton ones I think he's going to be one of my favs
Nice job! Patrick Troughton is my favourite Doctor, with Matt Smith and Tom Baker tied for second place. Thank you for making this!
Same!
When I was going to watch the second doctor I was like: "Meh, I suppose he's fine'" But then I saw that he was AWESOME.
Who else heard The Eleventh Doctor's voice when The Second Doctor shouted no no no no?
Nothing New Who is good. Stop trying to attach that crap to classic Who, idiot.
The song & the words I think fit perfectly and you did a great editing job! Fantastic! I love you're tribute to Colin Baker as well! Perfect!
I love this man
Patrick Troughton is a fantastic Doctor. One of the very best.
This is a brilliant tribute to the little Time Lord that could.
I love Troughton, he was goofy, giddy and grumpy, but he was also a very hurt and serious Doctor when he had to be. The speech in "Tomb of the Cybermen" is a perfect example.
If Troughton hadn't carried off the first regeneration so brilliantly Doctor Who would have died there and then. Fantastic actor and a lovely tribute.
RIP Patrick Troughton...
This is the best 2nd Doctor Tribute!! :)
The first three Doctors - Hartnell, Troughton, and Pertwee - are my favorites.
That's the beauty of this show. It brings people together.
Brilliant tribute to one of my favourite doctors, its just a shame most of his episodes are missing.
0:51 is hilarious! Love Troughton, such an epic Doctor. XD
My favorite Doctor which is a shame because most episodes have been lost :(
I wish a lot of his episodes were fully recovered but regardless the legacy of the 2nd Doctor is immortalized by tributes like this. This song is so fitting as well. Simply wonderful!
This actually made me cry. What a sweet song for my favorite Doctor. ❤️
Troughton, you're AWESOME!
He had a Brilliant Career as the Second Doctor and this tribute is excellent
Patrick was my favorite Doctor. Really only matched by the current Doctor for true inner energy and eccentricity. Very nice tribute.
Watched this with my second son this morning while he was on the toilet (it's a long story). Loved it! Fantastic job!
Even in the 60s people knew bow ties were cool. It's a fact that breaks the barriers of space and time.
And BabelColour, once again, this is such a sweet little tribute. You make it look effortless. ;) Labor of love right?
One of my favorite videos
One of my faviorite Doctors. He did a great job makiing sure fans would carry on loving the show.
57 years later I am still loving it. (And I do love Jodie no matter how much people slag her off.
Would just like to say Thank you @babelcolour for making this.
Doctor Who itself got me through a difficult point in my life, and then I began to find tributes and I recently found this fantastic one and just the song alone really speaks so many volumes to me.
From the bottom of my heart I say Thank you
I entirely agree. William Hartnell made "Doctor Who" work originally but Patrick Troughton ensured that it would continue.
He is undoubtably the best of the classic Doctors, also this music was in SPACED, the best sitcom to come out of Britain for all time
