  • I finally get to install my Transgo shift kit in my 1999 WJ Jeep Grand Cherokee.
    This is a step by step explanation for those who have never done their own home mechanics before so if you're familiar with some of the steps just fast forward through them.
    I will do a clip later of any or if no improvements to the transmission but need to drive it a few weeks to see the difference.
    To encourage me to load more clips please like and or subscribe to my channel.
    This is where I brought my Transgo kit.
    www.ebay.com.a...
    Regards Rik
    In this channel I explain how I do things mechanical and hopefully teach you and give you the confidence to do it yourself.
    I also show you my mechanical adventures.

    I have this kit in my 2004 GCJ Overland 4.7 HO, now going on over 8 years. Had the resistor installed at first but the slamming of the gears, extremely hard shift, I decided to take out. Still works great. For the bolts for the accumulator/plate cover, I added split lock washers, bought new grade 8, bolts that length wise was same old plus the crush length of the lock washer. I do not know about the 99, but here in USA, 2001-2004 seem to be famous for the bolts backing out. Love what you are doing...that is why I am a subscriber....

    Very helpful video! I was having the same problem getting that little valve out of the VB (29:00 mark) that you were. Your solution was both simple and elegant...smack it! ;-)

      Videos like these, along with the various automotive forums out there, have totally changed how gearheads interact with each other. As a fellow WJ owner, I really appreciate the effort you've put into these videos. Keep up the good work!

    Thanks for posting the procedure. Hope the kit is working well.
    I was fearful that you would twist the head off of at least one of the pan screws, with the apparent torque you were applying...

    • @BuiltByRik
      @BuiltByRik  8 років тому

      +boogerhead0 I just may be lucky but so far in my life I have only broken 2 bolts from over tightening. I am quite good at returning bolts with the same tension they came out with. I was in a bit of pain that day from a spinal injury maybe that showed through as well? Are you planning to do it yourself?
      As for the result that is answered below to another viewer.
      Regards Rik

      I'll probably go through the entire 45RFE... plates, bushings, seals, shift kit, solenoids (if I notice any problems.)
      Mainly, I was interested in seeing a kit procedure on the accumulators.
      I just put new engine in 2000 JGC Ltd w/Quadradrive.
      Several years ago, I put new engine into the other 2000 JGC Ltd, but it's just 2WD.
      They really hold up well, if you don't mind the frumpy things that break, like blend doors, window motor plastic parts, electric door locks, etc.

    • @BuiltByRik
      @BuiltByRik  8 років тому

      +boogerhead0 I have had no problems with things breaking as yet.
      The transmission was a good transmission and did not require a full tear down. Regards Rik

    Doesn't the kit also come with a set of large flat gaskets (one for each of the 3 trans types it replaces)? It's the large flat black gasket that sandwiches between the valve housings and the flat upper part with all the fluid channels in it. There's a million screws on the top holding them together. My valve body had a tear in that gasket at the end that connects near the front of the transmission (side nearest the engine). I had to use gasket glue to repair it, but I don't trust it and was considering this kit. I found it online and it looks like it comes with that gasket. I'm just curious if yours did and if so, why you didn't replace it?

    • @BuiltByRik
      @BuiltByRik  8 місяців тому +1

      To be honest I did not know it suited 3 different transmissions. There were more parts I did not install because the transmission is fine I just wanted the upgraded valve springs. I still have the box somewhere but that's 5 years old now. The new kit may come with different bits. I think I mention those in the clip. If you did not see the gasket in the clip it may not have been included 5 years ago. But I can recommend this kit. It shifts better than my stock overland and I drive it like a bat out of hell with around 400hp. I'm doing a manual conversion next year though as I don't like automatic transmissions and love a good manual.

      @The Racing Channel
      I just had to get to the valve body. I dont think it would have been in the way for that. But there's 5 or 6 pan bolts that were being a pain. I could have used a universal, but thats a pain too.
      I just said f*** it. Yank the 8 bolts and get it the hell outta my way..5 minutes of bitching about 8 bolts is better that 15 minutes of dickin around with those others, and in the end cross threading one of them. It makes replacing the gasket easier as well.

      Hello Buck, your welcome glad to hear the effort is appreciated.
      I will do a follow up in a week or so. Have noticed some differences but I have not floored it yet. It does seem to be a problem with this model and mine was far from straight. It had a slight bend at each valve. I have heard of vehicles being undrivable from this problem.

      I am no specialist I am sorry. This was my first shift kit install and I am happy I did not stuff it up. First check the oil level then if it is ok I would service it to see if it helps. If nothing helps it is probably worn and needs a rebuild. I would just look for a good second hand unit and do a swap. Hope this helps. Sorry late reply but due to a writing mistake UA-cam put it in my review basket. Regards RIk

    ??? Are you not concerned about all the chemicals in the ATF absorbing into your skin, maybe it's my American (USA) paranoia anyway I was confused about the springs in OD but your video (clip) really helped so yes I will be subsin to your channel thanks my friend. Did this help your jeep, my issue is after I shut my truck (Ram 1500) and let it sit for about 25 minutes then go drive it again it will always die at the 1st stop, I can't figure this one out. Anyway did it help your jeep.

      I tried wearing gloves but even large are too tight and rip. If I did it every day yes I would be concerned but once in a while I will be OK. Yes box still going strong even I drive it extremely hard. Thanks for watching

    this shift kid did not make a difference that I could tell on my 545RFE... what helped was installing larger cooler lines into a bigger less restrictive trans oil cooler...

      Results are different for everyone depending how it's driven and how old the transmission is when it's installed. I also did not notice a great deal but installing the resistor extension was the most beneficial. Still happy I did it though.

    • @BuiltByRik
      @BuiltByRik  5 років тому

      I remember not a spring but more like a seal. To install this is optional and you need to remove the gearbox and strip it down. I was not about to do that. I can not see how replacing it would be of any benefit. When I pull the box to install the 242HD and new torque converter I may put it in at that time. But like it said its optional. Regards Rik

      Aussie Jeep Muscle new subscriber here, I know the video is old but in your opinion if you only did one of the two the transgo reprogram kit or the little sonnax resistor? "I'm on my first test drive around the block with the sonnax installed as I type this"
      My point being Id rather invest the time and money in a converter than the transgo unless you say it made a bigger difference in feel and enjoyment than the sonnax.
      Thanks

      Well old or not Jeeps are current always. Would I install another transgo kit? To be honest I may do to strengthen the transmission. Firmer shifts are better for clutches but I would not do it for performance. I would always install the Sonnax but not so much the transgo. I would also go with the torque converter as the better performance upgrade.
      I also have a Facebook page by the same name. Regards Rik

    Hows the kit holding up?

    • @BuiltByRik
      @BuiltByRik  9 років тому +1

      Sorry not been online much due to health and other reasons.
      Well if I had not first installed a line pressure builder the kit would have impressed me. The kit comes with one and I feel that makes the most improvement.
      I am a manual shiffter normaly selecting the gears as I go but I have noticed I do that less being happier with the way it shifts automatically. It seems the heavier springs increased oil pressure under load or it may be a coincidence the cooler in front has sprung a leak just after installing. I am unsure. I have purchaced a new oil cooling system which I will install after I recover from a operation on friday. I hope it will let me work on the Jeep again without to much suffering.
      In conclusion if you already have a line pressure builder the improvements are minimal but if you install both at the same time you will notice it for sure. Is it worth the money? Yes I think so but others may disagree. Would still prefer a 7 speed manual though lol.

      If your talking about the half inch ratchet I'm removing the pan with its a Australian company that makes it not sure what name brand they use. Ill see if the brand name is on it tomorrow for you if I get a chance. Its nice as it has a second action. By pulling the handle you can operate it by twisting the handle only in case there is not much moving room. Quality is great.
