  • 🎸A VERY astute and accomplished *bass player*once told me that, “…any written notation should be able to played without the use of measures or bar lines whatsoever…“. -That is so true!
Nevertheless, whether the sight of odd-measures cause us anxiety or not, the intent of the “bar” is simply a way for the composer to inform us, the performer(s), of the “phrasing” and the “strong beats” of a bass line/melody/drum part/etc.
🎼🎵The main BASS motif/ostinato to Discipline [A] can be thought of as a “bar” of 17/16.
Fitting 17/16 over 24 bars of 5/8 requires 7 bars of 17/16 plus an additional two 16th notes (or 2/16) in order to land on the “one” of measure 25.
Playing this bassline/ ostinato [A] and feeling the pulse as 5/8 for 24 bars is probably the best rhythm practice I’ve forced myself to do in years!! Try it if you’re up for a challenge! HINT: I had to feel it as 10/16.
*️⃣-But here, I transcribed the legendary Tony Levin’s Chapman Stick lines (as best I could hear them) and choose to separate the bars into “phrases” and “strong beats” that [for me] are a little more natural to hear and play.
    ✨The 17/16 phrase definitely “feels” like 17/16 , but is more digestible to me as 1 bar of 5/4 (10/8) + 7/8 = 17/16✨
Feel free to screen shot the 3 pages at the end of the video.

    PS🎸
    • The entire bassline to the first [A] section of the song can fit over 24 bars of 5/8 before the start of the [B] section (without the need of the additional two 16th notes).
    • Also, [B] can be played entirely in 4/4.

    • FINALLY! King Crimson ...
    _________
    PSS🗣️
I first heard “Larks Tongues…” when I was maybe 16 and I’ve been hooked ever since. “Starless…” and “Red” were mind-blowing(!) and still are! Dr Bill Bruford remains to this very day, one of my favorite drummers to listen to ever, and I listen to a lot of drums!!! BTW, how in the world does he get that snare-sound?!
-Then came Belew. I personally believe that Adrian Belew is one of the best songwriters to have ever lived. If you haven’t heard “Two Hands”, “Waiting Man”, “Heartbeat”… you are in for such a treat.
Anyway, just wanted to to share the “tip-of-the-iceberg” which, in its entirety, is my boundless admiration for John Wetton, Robert Fripp, Bill Bruford, Tony Levin, Adrian Belew, Jamie Muir, Mike Giles, Gred Lake(!) and ALL the musicians who were and are 👑KING CRIMSON👑.
    :)

it's pretty amazing how, with the right amount of repetition & the right amount of variation, something as complex as that can groove that hard & not feel confusing or alienating, or whatever.
my hat's off to you, tony, for taking that on & playing the crap out of it!! heck yeah!!
& those guys are going tour with danny carey on drums. that's gonna be fun!!😊

Thank you for the new music to my ears. I took a listen to the Discipline album, and I am digging the sounds. I can hear how Prince (esp. the drums on Elephant Talk) and many other singers and musicians may have been influenced by this album/band.
As always, Awesome Work Mr. @TonyOnBass 🎸🎶‼️

Thanks for THE coolest comments ever Cha!! That’s an interesting thought. Would love your take on “The Sheltering Sky”. Starts w/African talking drum (Bruford loves that/me too), then chorus saturated airy guitar (ala Prince), then “stick” bass (my fav part), and then an angular futuristic guitar synthesizer melody. Almost as if it covers 25,000 years of sonic tapestry in a beautifully weird 5 min song??!!!
As for Prince, The artist formerly known as, I was rockin “Live For Love” just days ago‼️🙏🙏🙏

I may be tripping on the sounds but I can hear Prince's "Live 4 Love" (one of my faves💜!!)while listening to "The Sheltering Sky"(which is a Vibe) ...I dunno...but I do believe Prince was a fan of King Crimson's music. It's very interesting to me. Influences....🎶
