+Jonathan Williams Thanks for checking us out! If the bolt is still in good condition it can be used again. If you would prefer to use a new bolt, they are not too expensive and if you have any hesitation to re-use it, it would be worth the cost. 1aauto.com
Always ALWAYS put lubricant on the seal and sealing surface of the Harmonic balancer. Make sure you wash off the sealing surface of the balancer with carb or brake cleaner first..
Aside from the break down instructions to get to the pulley....This looks to be very similar to my Crankshaft pulley on my 97 Mercury Cougar with 4.6l V8. Is there any other pro tips that would apply to my 4.6l engine other than what is provided here in this video? Thanks for posting this!
The bolts are torque to yield and should be one use. The stock factory number is F5RZ-6A340-B. I just replaced my HB and my bolt was fine but 10 bucks is good insurance.
Aye if I don't tighten extra after it starts turning over the motor can it possibly throw the belt off completely i rebuilt my 99 f150 4.6 and having some problems as it was my first build so don't know if I put my new crank not far enough back or the balancer needs tightened it looks a little off
Can a harmonic balancer bolt be loosened by putting two bolts in the pulley holes, as you did, then using a long screwdriver, with one hand, to keep the crankshaft from turning counterclockwise, while using a torque wrench, with the other hand to loosen the bolt, or will it break the bolts in the pulley, or even damage the harmonic balancer, etc.?
I think you could do that. If you look for the video by A1, "Part 1 how to replace timing chain tensioner and guides 4.6l ford v8"......... In that video he shows a nice little trick to remove the balancer bolt without air tools. I would try that first before you try using 2 bolts and a pry bar if you havent already.
What is the purpose the the balancer I just spend around 700$ on my 98 f150 4.2 that has a misfire and now another mec. Told it might be the HBalancer any help please
I think you should amend your video title to include "2v 5.4l Triton" or something. This procedure virtually applies to many 2v Expeditions and Navigators, which kept the 2v through 2004 and have basically the same engine bay layout. (The F-150 got the 3v head in 2004 and most other vehicles didn't - I believe they were all 3v in 2005)
i believe that first torque down at 66 ft lbs is to fully seat the pully. Then you loosen it some then re-torque it to 37 ft lbs then add a 90° turn to it to finalize the seat.
1A Auto Parts thanks for the reply i found the prob wasnt bad just had motor replaced an they didnt torck down tge bolt an it came out enuff to pass the crank position switch tightened it up an runs fine again btw ive use ur videos many times an they help so much keep up the good work

It’s the harmonic balancer bolt reusable

taking the transmission line loose and the radiator hose sure makes it easier

Great video!!
that is the best filter housing butchering I ever seen on fords)))
Aren’t those bolt torque to yield bolts. One time use
Was there any instruction on making sure the timing is correct or will it just line up with the key?
Great video
I have a 1998 ford expedition, the harmonic ballencer makes a squeaking noise when acceleration. Also it wobbles. Does this mean it is bad?
Absolutely
Harmonic balancer aka fancy pulley? Will this stop squealing in the truck if replaced?
Aye if I don't tighten extra after it starts turning over the motor can it possibly throw the belt off completely i rebuilt my 99 f150 4.6 and having some problems as it was my first build so don't know if I put my new crank not far enough back or the balancer needs tightened it looks a little off
What is the pitch on the m8? Are you referring to 125mm in length? Or 1.25 pitch...
What would cause you to have to replace a harmonic balancer?
whats the procedure if the hb bolt strips out?

What is the THREAD SIZE for the puller bolt holes?
I believe he said 8 by 1.5.
what size is the harmonic balancer for the fan
Why did you take the radiator hose off?
Does the center bolt loosen clockwise or counter??
I know im late but it loosens counterclockwise.

Some 2003 late builds are 3V. By virtue of stating this applies to 97-03 f150 2V is implied.
Question: You torque the center bolt to 66 ft/lbs then back it off alot, re-tighten it to 37 ft/lbs, and then another 90 degrees?
i believe that first torque down at 66 ft lbs is to fully seat the pully. Then you loosen it some then re-torque it to 37 ft lbs then add a 90° turn to it to finalize the seat.
Just buy the arp bolt and skip that crazy torque sequence
Good question. You would think the creator of the video would answer this question... NOPE.
I think he had marbles in his mouth.
What is the part name that PROTECTS the harmonic balancer from getting struck or splashed by puddles? (I have a 2000, 4.2)
Why didn't you just remove the fan shroud before pulling the fan? A lot more room to break the fan bolt.
You can't remove the shroud without getting the fan off first. Unless you cut the bottom out.
How did you know the harmonic balancer was bad?
Start your truck/car and look at it and see if its wobbly..normally the rubber oring goes bad which cause it to throw the belt or shread the belt
Will a bad balancer cause the engine to not run?
+Zantar Stone No, but it may make it run rough.

Yes if it tears your crankshaft sensor up like it did mine.

Are the torque spec the same for a 4.6 2v?
+Tony The tiger Yes it will be same specs for a 4.6L! If you or anybody needs to purchase this part please check out this link: www.1aauto.com/ford-harmonic-balancer/i/1aehb00202?UA-cam&CTA+Comment&XaPTRlqBj4

Does anyone know a part number and/or source for the puller used in the video? Puller in my box won't work.

why did you torque it to 60 some pounds, then loosen it, then torque it to 30 something ...You torque it half more than required didnt you ....
Tried doing this. And it broke the tool.
Half the day is gone before you start pulling the balancer, I’m never buying a Ford after 96
First remove the truck from the balancer...
Is that an automatic or standard on the automatic see you got to take the lines off the transmission to the radiator
What is the THREAD SIZE for the crankshaft hole?
